Popped in for a quick pint following the end of year celebration at the local secondary school, very pleasant gentleman serving behind the bar, good selection of beers, and a lovely pint of Timothy Taylor Landlord on pull, £10.40 for two pints and a large coke, would happily return

We pop in to the Jolly Sailor on a fairly regular basis for the wonderful food they serve normally from Thursday to Sunday but in these crazy times they are currently only serving Sunday lunch. We booked a time slot a 2pm and when we arrived our table was ready with all the social distancing and track and trace to fill in. The selection of roasts were Pork,Beef,Lamb and chicken. I ordered the lamb and Jacqui ordered the beef. Not long after our food arrived piping hot. Loads of well cooked veg to accompany the food and a gravy boat! I must say that both of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals and booked to come the following Sunday. What more can you say. The staff are warm and welcoming and stock a good range of beers and two or three real ales. Food 11 out of 10.

5 of my family were seated in this traditional old pub which has two eating food rooms and a small bar.We were attended to by staff who were professional in their hospitality. The main meal came with meat, roasties and Yorkie with the mash, turnip, carrots.cabbage and cauliflower cheese in two separate serving bowls and the crackling.Everything was piping hot and the meat was obviously hand carved and very generous portions. The portions of vegetables was also very generous. All agreed that the meal was great value with great service from staff. There is seating outside where customers were drinking and having dinner, the weather was complying this day. There is craft beer along with a selection of pub thirst quenchers. There is a step at the door so it might be difficult for wheelchairs. The toilets were clean. There is parking nearby. The seating outside is functional and in the sun all afternoon. The traffic on the coast road can be busy which can be annoying but chatting you soon forget it. I would book to ensure a table at you’re required time on Sundays but meals are available during the week, phone for weekday service. Overall an enjoyable relaxed meal at competitive prices. I live in Whitburn and this review is how my family agreed was accurate on our visit.

Popped in for a drink out on a walk with my partner. Having been a few years since I visited It is a traditional old style pub, menu looked nice also. The inside looks a little dated and not much changed probably since years ago but had the old pub style feel about it. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. We sat outside for a drink, good range of drinks and prices average. Could do with a bit of a refresh but nice for a stop to grab a drink. Only thing that bugged me is we sat outside, and one of the staff came out on a break to have a cigarette break and sat at the same table, I have no issue with people smoking but not particularly when I am sitting at the same table as we don't smoke, just think it is courtesy to ask.

Having been out for a nice meal my partner and myself decided to pop in the jolly for a couple of quiet drinks to finish the night off. There was a few locals in at this time and we got chatting to people at the bar and the barmaid and was having a good night. Things took a terrible change for the worse when I ordered a round of drinks, my partner ordered gin and tonic which was totally flat (not only flat but the cheapest bottle of tonic you can buy). I politely asked the barmaid if she could make another one, which she agreed to do - no problem at all, it was at this point for owner of the pub came in the bar, seemingly rather intoxicated himself, saying “finish your drinks and just get out, you’re not welcome back in here again!”. Even the barmaid said there’s no need for going on in such a manner, the locals also seemed bemused at such a strange and aggressive rant over a below par drink being served. We asked for a refund of the drinks we had just paid for, which he refused to do, after protests from the barmaid he did agree to refund us eventually. Me and my partner feel very upset by this horrible little mans actions having been local to Whitburn most of our lives and drinking in the jolly on and off for 20+ years. I’ve just discovered this place has only 1 star for the health and hygiene which is very concerning, so they may have done us a favour in the long run. I would avoid at all cost.

We visited the pub today and had a disagreement with a 'regular' customer who took issue with us saving a seat (yes one small stool) for one of our friends who was about to join us. The regular customer pointed out that he some how has the right to acquire extra seats ahead of people like us who 'visit once a year'. Also, our dog was not allowed to sit on the ripped and torn shoddy seats despite us showing that our dog was sat on our coat. Overall a quite scruffy pub and the 'regulars' are welcome to their chairs and we won't be coming back. Pubs run like his suffer in the long term because they don't welcome new customers.

You two guys have shown such hospitality over the recent years we have visited your friendly and homely pub! This particular visit (from Australia ) was sadly punctuated by the need to bury my lovely sister "wee Val" (Valerie Mason) a much loved and long time resident of your village. Your compassion and genuine love for my sister was evident and your comments shared with me and my wife were truly comforting and are treasured Also please note we enjoyed the wee bottle of "Scottish medicine " you instructed us to consume upon our safe return to Australia! We shared cheese garlic bread (full pizza size) and each had a chicken dish with prawns and mushrooms in a seafood sauce with lovely home cooked chips and vegetables. The portions were quite generous in fact we both left some chicken ! We shared a bottle of house red.The bill was £33.05 really good value. The venue is quite small and old fashioned. The staff are friendly and polite. We even met the cook when we were leaving she was really nice.I can't wait to take my partner.

I rang the Jolly Sailor this morning to ask if they could accommodate a family group of 17 people at lunchtime and was told that this would be no problem. When we arrived shortly after 12 noon we found that we had been put into a private room all set out for Sunday Lunch. They gave us a wonderful welcome. The food was served promptly and was absolutely delicious. Generous portions of meat with masses of beautifully cooked fresh vegetables. This was served to us by smiling, friendly waitresses. On Friday last, I went into the Jolly Sailor, at 1pm and asked if they could accomodate 8 for lunch, as we had been to a funeral. Without hesitation, the management said yes, but could we wait about five minutes to give them time to set the table up. True to their word, this was done, and then followed a meal which was a delight. Mince and dumpling, liver and onions, fish and chips were the order of the day, and all of the party enjoyed their particular order. With drinks, and there were a few, the whole bill came to less than £100, andwe all considered that it really was good value.

Went to the jolly sailor this Sunday for lunch with friends, and I was deeply disappointed with the food and service, for a business to have such a high rating this experience saddened me.it started out when I first arrived at the jolly sailor friends already seated, I was asked if I would like a drink and I replied coke with ice, what I received 5 minutes later was a warm pint of coke (great) ...Next, I ordered a lamb dinner, I asked the owner if possible could I have some replacements on the vegetables provided he told me they come in a dish so basically No you can't. so still not wanted to leave since I placed my order and had a pint of warm coke, our meal turned up the lamb looked out of this world and was beautifully cooked and tasted lovely, the plate itself had a Yorkshire pudding on which was a day old and over cooked, every mouthful of it was like chewing on an old bit of cardboard, also on the plate was 2 roasties which were delightful in taste and cooked perfectly. onto the vegetables in the dish you got some mashed potato mashed turnip and cabbage and carrots (the previous two I don't like and wanted to replace) but what happened is that each dish is for 2 people so I had to share the portion with 1 of my friends which were disappointing considering with were all really hungry, so while eating we seeing an old couple came into the dining area but they were sitting apart which was weird and I was thinking why, 10 minutes later their food comes out the meat looks nice, and then their vegetable dishes come out, and it turns out they got the same sized dish for one person that we had to share between two people, so in turned they got more for their money's worth and we were ripped off.overall if you are single or willing to sit at single tables apart from you friends this is the Sunday pub for you, if u was to have a good time with friends and be seated together don't waste your money coming here,

This is like taking a step back in time to what good traditional pubs used to be. Having run pubs since 1984 I think I may know something about them. This is a olde worlde place with great original decor and features. Voiv the owner keeps the beer in great condition and the staff give you genuine greeting. The small front bar is dog friendly and their food although only available on certain days is well worth having with good variety and good quality ingredients. We live in Australia, but are regular visitors to the UK. When we are travelling we obviously eat out a lot, our favourite place is the Jolly Sailor. Absolutely delicious home made food, traditional roast dinners, steak and kidney puds, home made fish cakes etc, etc. All the food is very well priced and the wine is reasonable. The best thing though is the atmosphere, the place has small inter-connected rooms which gives the feel of you being invited to your favourite aunties house for lunch, and what really tops it off are the wonderfull staff. Sue, Vic, Charlie, Tricia, Teresa and all, thanks so much.
