Lovely food, classic pub grub but done well and reasonably priced. Liver was excellently cooked, slightly pink and soft and packed full of flavour. Service was good, we were checked back on, meals came promptly and cleared when finished. Nice cold wine and kids meals substantial for the price! Only marked down one star as bar is always busy (not a bad thing), but just makes it sometimes awkward leaning over drinkers to order food. However, always highly recommended for both food and drinks.

Ordered burger with no cheese due to allergy. Came with cheese, they took away to replace but our same bacon on top with remnants of cheese in it. They swore blind they changed it and it was butter, but was not. Got refund and left.

Shocking On entering with my family, we where greeted busy to members of staff behind the bar who really dis not care. We We shouted at across the room don't sit at that table down on the left as it is reserved. We picked our our cutlery and sauces what felt like a new TV show called "pick a mix for eating" The food is dire and the east street bap of roast beef and gravy is rubbish. The beef was old and so thin you could use it to paste a wall. The kids chicken fillet never came but we did get batter fish for her. The eggs where burnt on the kids ham, eggs, chip The prawn roll was the best thing but then you did not need to cooked it! 42 pound later and we left knowing we never return. The staff did not care but the guy behind the bar . We are locals and not on holiday so that the crap you serve. Good luck to you.

The food was excellant and when we asked to be moved due to someone coughing badly near us it was no problem for them. I would recommend this pub for a meal anytime.

I am not ordinarily a person to write review about anything, but unfortunately on this occasion I feel I have to put my dissatisfaction into writing. Ideally located in this picturesque village is about the only positive out of this experience, to say similarities to faulty towers would be a understatement. The landlord was a nice guy but a one man band who poured drinks, collected glasses cooked the food, collected plates cooked the desserts, also poured drinks into the same glasses and then, Over charged for simple meals like Corn beef hash x 5 ( which was perfectly hot and enjoyable) and then sets of drinks and puddings which all declared there prices on the website but when it came to the bill at the end of the night we were told the final amount without a printed bill and then he came back for a second and a third time with two totally different amounts for the final bill.Which in the end came to £118 which allegedly had government discounts on, but when I approached the landlord about breaking the bill down he said he couldn’t !!. In the end we paid the bill and called the landlord and asked him if he could break the bill down so we could work the, prices down, to be fair to the owner did answer his phone and gave us his mobile and he said he would contact once he was clear and true to his word he texted back to say we had been overcharged by £20( still disputable) but hey ho. But the point of this review Is that surely a one man band trying to run a pub of this size without any staff or support is truly business sucicide And made a mockery and shambolic experience for us has a family and we will endeavour to take a wide birth of this public house in the future. Disappointing under the current climate when the government are trying to encourage people to come back out and experience restaraunts, and then to experience this farce was a true joke. Sorry but just not up scratch.

Popped in for a late Sunday afternoon meal with the dog. Pub was warm, staff were friendly. Quite a few choices of decent pub grub plus Sunday roasts - we went for a smoked haddock and the other for maggots. Both meals were hot and tasty. Nice beer too. Overall a good place in Teignmouth time rest a while and eat and drink.

We are a walking group of about 20 and finding a venue for lunch is always difficult, especially on New Years Day. On contacting the pub earlier the landlord was only to happy to accommodate us. A menu was supplied with a good range of food. As with the large group we had to pre order the meals. The food was quickly served and everybody enjoyed their meals. Two extra walkers turned up and despite the numbers in the pub they were happy to serve them. We shall be certainly visiting the pub again on one of our regular walks.

Went tonight for a Xmas meal and it was comical!. Steak looked like a chop but tasted ok, small portions and expensive alcohol. Not sure if he was landlord but everything had to be rushed because of a draw of which we entered, not being offered tickets and surprise only locals won, tickets weren’t given 🤔. When asked about desert we were told hurry up the draw starts soon. Also the barmaid didn’t know how to do coffee when asked 😂😂. When husband asked if we’d won anything on the draw he was told I’m busy serving 🤔. They only had our name not number so we’d never know. I’d never go again service rubbish, landlord rubbish and food not much better!. If your local i.e live in the village you may be ok.

The Jolly Sailor was my local until recently. Boy do I miss it. Characterful pub, well kept beer, tasty food, sport for those that want it, luxuriously lawned garden in summer, blazing fire throughout winter. Entertaining conversation is a guaranteed with the finest landlord around. What are you waiting for?

We went on holiday to Devon for 5 nights and stayed in the fine village of Ogwell. The Jolly Sailor was the local pub. If you want fine dining then this isn’t for you. But if you want a local pub with a welcoming landlord, good beer and very good pub grub then you should give this a go. Yes the pub is raw and unpretentious, but in my eyes, that’s both refreshing and welcome...

We visited the Jolly Sailor for food and a few drinks and we were not disappointed. Lovely home cooked food in a cosy environment (sat next to the log burner), with a lovely host & staff. We were made to feel very welcome and we will most definitely be visiting again soon.

well afterlooking at the few good reviews we rented a summer let property in the village where the landlord warned us not to go as the poor service and food but on a rainy saturday we thought we would try the jolly sailor to find it closed in the afternoon so we returned in the evening to find just the owner there watching tv it was very cold and dated food was out within minutes being the only cook and barman it had to be microwave meals the drinks was very overpriced and tasted like the pipes need a good clean the toilets smell damp and need a hand dryer not a bar towel to wipe your hands and it would be nice to be able to wash your hands in hot water we tried a game of pool and the table is so dated its not worth the 50p

We were staying in the Village, & ate all all of our evening meals in the Pub (3 nights) The Cask Beer was really nice, although there was only one on at a time, (Tribute) other beers lagers ciders etc available, but the meals were excellent, My friends & I all enjoyed our meals cooked by the owner / landlord John, He was a really good host, offering plenty of choice, All the meals were on a chalkboard rather than on a menu sheet, I would definitely recommend this Pub to anyone.

We went to the Jolly sailor , I won't say it was the best place I've ever eaten , but the staff were very friendly and music cheerful , the pricing was average , spoilt by the football and very loud people watching it . We have heard that on Friday their fish and chip night is very good so may give it another try , we will see!

All we kept hearing is how bad the manager is, how expensive drinks are, how un inviting the pub is.. Went to see for ourselves and we wont be back. Need i go on. Its such a shame. Being a village pub it should be full! Plenty of locals going else where. Would think the owners would notice? Needs a breath of fresh air!!

My great grandson's Christening party was held here. We did not find the drinks over priced and we all thoroughly enjoyed the food. Curry, rice, chips, salad and Lasagna. Chips and sausages and chicken laid out on another table mainly for the children but quite a few adults dived in too. After reading the other reviews I wondered if it was the same place !

I visited this pub with a group of friends and was astonished at the price of the drinks. I bought 4 pints of beer, half a pint of lager and a small red wine and was charged £25.30. I questioned the landlord about the price and asked home to check his reckoning as I thought it to be excessive. I stated what I had ordered and what he had charged and he said that it was correct. I repeated the order once more and as I did so, he quoted the price - 4 pints (£16), a small merlot (£5) and half a lager (£2.50). Realising his mistake, he refunded the difference without any word of an apology. The Chelsea/Everton match was being shown on the TV in the bar which a few locals were sat watching and as soon as it was over, they all disappeared, leaving just our group in the place (hardly surprising considering the price of drinks!). My hobby has taken me to hundreds of villages all over the county and I have to say that The Jolly Sailor is the most expensive pub I have visited for a drink in Devon. Paying those prices one would expect, at the very least, for the staff to be courteous and smile as they rip you off. We left after finishing our drinks and the place was then empty......

Went the other night for a skittle evening, never having been here before. There was lots dust on the ledges down to the skittle alley. The room the ally was in smelt damp, we had to dust the tables before we could use them. The drinks were overpriced with it costing £10.00 for two pints and two soda waters, the soda waters were also flat as well. A meal was included in our evening out, in my case £7.50 for a few undercooked chips, a few pieces of scampi and a few peas, none of the meals were of any size. If you had salt in your salt pot, you did not get pepper. There were no serviettes, and no water on the tables. The pub is not disabled friendly as very uneven and slopping floors and for anybody visually impaired it is very dark (but this does help to disguise the dust and cobwebs), this was a shame as we were looking forward to a nice country pub experience.

A friend took a couple of us to this pub a few weeks ago. The bar charged us £12 for 3 pints. The large tasted pretty poor. The bar itself look tired, games area also was in a bad way. Another round was purchased along with a round of 3 crisp and 1 peanuts, £5 just for this. Needless to say we won't be going back.

We came for Sunday carvery when we visited Dawlish. The food was good, although the beef was a bit chewy. The Yorkshire puddings were huge. Service was quick and friendly and the Covid-19 set up was good. We would return if we came back to the area.

Bovey Castle is certainly a beautiful and interesting location. However, with all their grounds parking spaces are a premium. Eventually, we were offered a space in a coned off area. A very well appointed building as your would expect for a Five Star Hotel. We began with an aperitif 'Gusbourne English Sparkling' which was superb. A absolutely delightful bar. Smith's Brasserie! Well, let's begin with the positives. Excellent welcome and staff were fantastic throughout our Birthday lunch. Extremely unimaginative menu to say the least. A nice enough starter. Perhaps would have expected freshly made mayonnaise, not from a bottle, in such an establishment. Pleasant enough bottle of rose, although there was a choice of ONE. My wife (Birthday Girl) and I opted for pasta dishes. Absolutely clueless when it comes to pasta dishes. Packet spaghetti with prawns (four small ones) and a Provencal sauce? Very little of it too. It is an Italian dish and the sauce requires mixing in the pasta. Tagliatelle, again from a packet, with some type of utterly non-descript cream sauce at the bottom of the dish. Totally unseasoned dishes. The cooking water needs to taste of the sea. Therefore, seasoned. No offer of cheese or pepper or pangrattato, nothing, and certainly no theatre. Huge improvements required I'm afraid to make an enjoyable dining experience. Dress Code: Expectations, as you would imagine were high. Staff were smart, but could have been better attired for such a hotel. Clientele: Lots of jeans and un-ironed tee shirts wondering around and dining. A pair of football shorts and dirty trainers at one table, others with feet on the chairs in the bar and the final straw was a couple arriving in towelling dressing gowns and flip flops. NO! Sorry. There's a time and a place and this is not acceptable. Unfortunately, this was a lunch to judge if a weekend stay would be appropriate for our anniversary and it simply is not good enough.
