Amazing service- accommodated 11 month old no problem. Just a walk in lunch- no reservation. Two friends out for lunch with a baby. Didn’t feel like a burden, like we could be included and have a lovely meal even with a baby. Lovely environment. Great staff. Food phenomenal. Didnt order any drinks but would love to go back for cocktails another time.

Having been to The Ivy on the Square a number of times on our visit to Edinburgh travelling from Ireland we were so looking forward to it. Upon booking I requested a quiet table as this was to be a long awaited romantic meal. On arrival at our booking time we were told our table wasn't ready. We expected to be shown into the restaurant to wait but no, we had to wait in the very small hall, freezing as the door was permanently open. The staff did apologise for the wait and after 10 mins we were shown to our table. We were shown upstairs and noticed (due to the noise level) there was a very large table of 10/12 people. We were greeted by a lovely young lad who was so attentive. I was delighted to see my favourite dinner, Maylaysian monkfish & prawn on the menu. We ordered our wine and enjoyed our starter again noticing the noise from the other side of the restaurant. We were sure this table was surely about to leave given they looked & sounded like they had been there a long time. Unfortunately not, they were just being served their mains. The noise level just got worse & worse. We ordered more wine and had to wait 15 mins for it to come even though our mains had already been served. In fairness to our waiter he did apologise and offered us complimentary tea/coffee after our dinner. He did come back & offered to take our glasses of wine off the bill. What a disappointment my main meal was. My memory of this dish was large pieces of white, chunky monkfish and a beautiful sauce. There was a complete lack monkfish, and the prawns were tiny. Far too many coconut shavings. The coconut was overpowering and I crunched through it. I left some of it behind and when our waiter cleared the table I advised how disappointing this dish was. I wasn't looking for anything as I did eat the majority of it. I was just passing on my feedback. My bigger issue was the noise. It was like sitting in McDonalds! I spoke with what looked like the Maitre d on my way to the ladies. He agreed with me the noise was bad but didn't do anything about it. I told him someone needed to ask them to keep the noise down as it was disturbing other diners but he just agreed with me - I was meaning for him to do it!! He said we probably should have sat downstairs. We left with sore heads & feeling that The Ivy has gone down hill. This is supposed to be top notch restaurant, this was not our experience & I'm sure we weren't the only diners to feel the same last night. Disappointing to say the least!!

I have had breakfast at the ivy on the square a couple of times in the last two years or so. Each time it’s been a wonderful experience. The decor, the excellent customer service and food quality makes it an amazing restaurant to enjoy. This time my husband and I visited to and had mimosas with our breakfast. Staff were attentive to recognise that we were celebrating and brought out a cute pastry to share as a surprise to congratulate us. Their cappuccino is delicious and their poached eggs with hollandaise sauce is perfection! Should you want a second cuppa it’s complimentary. Don’t hesitate to visit and enjoy a bit of luxury for breakfast before you hit the shops.

My wife and myself dined here last night, the welcome was nice and we were seated quickly. Unfortunately the waiter who served us was very difficult to understand we had to ask to repeat what he said a number of times. Disappointed to find that there are no draft beer options and a 330ml bottle was over £6:50 Found the menu to be a bit limited, it took 55 mins from being seated to receiving our meal. The food was ok my burger was loaded with onion (which I hate) and it wasn’t listed on the menu, I didn’t want to wait another 1/2 hr on a replacement so i just took them off and left the bun. Thought The service charge of 12.5% was a bit steep. To sum up nice setting but overpriced and slow service

The last visit was a disappointment, but, the manager contacted me and persuaded us to try the Ivy again. We booked an overnight stay in Edinburgh and gave them another try. Staff were welcoming and we got friendly greetings from them. Service was quick and everything was freshly cooked and tasty. The staff took our omissions from their menu's on board and were helpful with recommendations re me only being able to drink fruit tea. Glad we gave the Ivy another try and yes we would return again. Sincere thanks to the manager for their generosity, very much appreciated.

After having visited the Ivy in York, my perception of the Ivy was top class service, average food. However, I was willing to give the Ivy another chance on a recent trip to Edinburgh. There was a great range of meals for everyone including vegetarians. I had a duck curry which I would give a 5 star and was a fair portion size. It was my girlfriend's birthday and the Ivy were kind enough to give her a free dessert. The service in this restaurant was not as attentive as the one in York I found, having to ask quite a few times for a vegetarian menu for my girlfriend. Would definitely return!

I have had nothing to eat since lunch at the Ivy yesterday as still relishing the taste of the ultra delicious meal. Met up with friends and wasn’t sure what to expect. The food was sublime , delicious and presented beautifully. Very attentive waiter. Good relaxed atmosphere despite being very busy. I had the crab salad, wonderful and then the “ out of this world” shepherd’s pie. I wish I could make one like that.! So a big thank you to the chefs, kitchen staff, waiting staff and receptionists. I shall be back!

Hmmm. Well my sole was EXTREMELY greasy… yes it was a butter sauce but it just tasted of butter possibly rancid at that and not pleasant at all, the mashed potato was lumpy and very greasy indeed. My daughter had the chicken skewers with peanut sauce and jasmine rice and said it was extremely delicious! For pudding I had a crème brûlée which had the texture and taste of scrambled eggs so was desperately over cooked. My daughter had a raspberry and pistachio ice cream sorbet and said it was yet again delicious. Oh and I meant to say that the bread was utterly fabulous. However when the bill came it had an extra charge of £5 for an extra course (which I didn’t have) I questioned the bill and the waited bustled off and said I’ll show you but when he came back he apologised profusely and said I was right and that it was a mistake????? Hmmm Ivy in York is far far better than the Edinburgh one! With a bill of £105 for two people I would expect a lot more!!

Nice venue; some of the food was nice, some not so which was disappointing given the price. Greasy fish with my chips which cost £28. Wow. I would have complained but wife would not be impressed with me. Duck starter amazing though and would recommend. My gripe is putting the 12.5% service charge onto the bill but with the note you can remove it. Maybe I’m too British to complain as I’m happy to tip for great service but not big standard stuff. Bit disappointed

Afternoon Tea @ £29.95 pp. Vastly overpriced. Miniature portions; 2xfinger sandwich; 1x small bun; 2x mini scones; chocolate milkshake; 1x madalein. Alcoholic drinks - were very expensive and a £19.20 service charge was automatically added. Although staff were polite. We arrived early but couldn't be seated at our empty table as we were told the tea starts at 3pm prompt and tablets are timed from when you are seated. We sat at the bar for 20mins which is a very tight space. The food was not particularly tasty. I wish I'd read the reviews before going. I would not visit again.

Came here for Afternoon Team after receiving a gift voucher, and was incredibly disappointed with the whole experience. the Afternoon Tea experience is nothing short of a production line....customers are crammed in on tiny tables (we had to put some stuff on the floor under the table to make space), we were served our teas, cakes etc without much interaction from the staff, the waiter forgot that we ordered champagne and had to be reminded a couple of times. All this I could excuse if the quality of food had been good, but it was appallingly bad. The sandwiches were dreadful, with hardly any filling. I had asked if I could get my sandwiches without truffle mayo to be told that the filling was already made up and couldn't be changed - not what I'd expect for a £40 afternoon tea. The scones were rock hard and the eclairs inedible. Can find better sandwiches and scones at my local Coop. I can't comment on other food here, but stay away from the Afternoon Tea - totally overpriced and trading on the "Ivy" name

I had booked a table online for myself and my boyfriend a week in advance as a treat while we were visiting Edinburgh. We arrived on time at the restaurant and were told our table wasn't ready and to wait in the bar area. We waited and waited.... half hour later, still no table and nobody approached us to apologise or to provide any updates. It was past 9pm at this point where I asked a waitress how long were we exoected to wait. She didnt know so we waited even longer. While we waited, other people were arriving and being seated much to our disappointment and annoyance. I questioned why this was and was then told, people had been told to go away and come back 45 mins later as they were over running with bookings by approx an hour!!! They had NOT told us this so we were expected to sit and wait for 45 mins!!! The staff were unapologetic, they did not explain this to us upon arrival. When I asked to speak with the manager to conplain he simply said there was nothing he could do and did we want to wait until a table became free. I declined and went elsewhere. Overall a very disappointing experience.

Our first attempt to eat here failed ~ a straight NO - but fortunately we were in Edinburgh for another day and we could and did book. For folk who don’t know the area (as we didn’t) it’s surprisingly hard to find somewhere to eat...

Appalling customer care from the indifferent receptionist to two mangers who tried to move us from our prebooked table, after the first courses had just been removed, because they wanted the table for others. We had only been there 1 hour 25 mins and that...

Afternoon Tea. Really poor quality. Cakes and pastries clearly bought in and had been lying about as hard. Scones hard and jam tasteless. Two attempts to get the correct tea. A pot with one tea bag which was insipid. Very noisy as at the end...

Booked here, for lunch, when we arrived we were offered a choice of upstairs or downstairs. Chose upstairs glad we di it was a bit more roomy and airy. As the restaurant filled up downstairs became a bit crushed and noisy. Staff were helpful and...

I met a friend here for lunch/brunch. Although our booking was 11.45, no brunch items (eggs Benedict, etc.) were available. The food we ordered from the main lunch menu was just ok, fairly bland. Our bill was £60, for 2 very average mains and 2...

There's little point in drawing comparisons between The original Ivy and its chain restaurants. As far as stand alone chain restaurants go this is unremarkable and pretty bland. Whilst there's been an empathetic attempt to create a bustling bistro vibe it's too big to offer...

I used to frequent Cafe Truva at the shore a number of years ago and was looking forward to visiting their Lady Lawson street branch on a visit to town. What a disappointment! The ‘panini spice’ that I used to love was a delicious mix of spiced chicken, mozzarella and sun dried tomatoes served with a lovely Turkish-salad meze. Unfortunately there must be profit margins to protect here and the quality of product has been compromised beyond all recognition...bland strips of processed chicken, one piece of sun dried tomato all cooked without seemingly much care. The side salad used to be a real treat served with feta cheese, stuffed vine leaves, tzatziki and cous cous, instead you are now served some chopped lettuce, tomato and cucumber with no dressing.....distressing stuff. I hope they are reading and take these comments into consideration, will not return in a hurry which is a crying shame.

We enjoy eating at Shackleton’s. If you are staying at Channings it is a very easy place to grab a bite to eat. Everyone is nice and we enjoy the food.

My lunch was very poor value, in particular the salad. A very small serving of potato salad, watery Greek salad and 8-9 small mixed leaves cost £7.50. I thought it was coronation chicken but it was tatties ! Had to wait a while at the counter to be served too. Won’t be back.
