So nice, we tried it twice. This was one of the best meals i had in Scotland. I had the wild mushroom risotto both times. My husband got the steak and chips the first time and the rack of lamb the second time. We enjoyed the fried calamari both times for the teaser. I don't know how to explain how delightful the food was, it melted in my mouth. If you have the chance, go pop in. Also, the honey cheesecake was heavenly.

We dined here for 3 nights as part of the great deal we had staying at Channings for dinner, bed and breakfast .The staff are friendly and always eager to please and make your experience a good one.Unfortunately they are let down by a very limited menu, the soup of the day,was the same broccoli and blue cheese soup for each of our 3 nights! . The menu is very pub grub as another reviewer wrote. The steak and chips was perfectly acceptable, the mushroom risotto starter, great one day,yet very bland and dry the next. The sweets were poor to say the least, again very limited choice and none were worth recommending. Its a shame as it could be much better. If the food wasn't included as part of our hotel rate, we wouldn't have gone back after our first night.Thank you to the wonderful staff for trying to make our meals enjoyable.

I was expecting a very high standard based on previous reviews but was sadly disappointed. The quality of food was very good but the ethos seems to be big rather than practical. I ordered the burger and found the patty perfectly seasoned, perfectly cooked but too thick. Coupled with half a tonne of onion relish (which overpowered the flavour of the meat) I was overall unimpressed despite the ingredients and freshness of them being of a very high stand. The toasties are too big to actually fit in your mouth too. If the chef reads this review please, please review how you present the food for consumption, it shouldn't be a battle to eat it but you've definitely got the quality ingredients to make the restaurant a necessity when in town!

I must make it clear that my experience was in the Shackleton gastric bar in this hotel. However it was not an altogether enjoyable experience. Starters were fine. The smoked mackerel pate was acceptable and the Caesar salad very generous. We both had lamb which was overlooked and very ordinary. It came with pearl potatoes, which turned out to be three tiny pieces of spud and a lot of quite tough shallots. The jus was undistinguished. Pudding of rhubarb cheesecake was again a very generous portion but neither of us could taste any rhubarb. The whole thing was two particularly livid shades of pink. Not quite the standard of food I was expecting.

I would say that based on what we tried the food at this restaurant is pretty good. With a couple of tweaks it could be better. I had lamb rump and it was delicious. My only complaint is that it was slightly over-seasoned for my liking. My husband had salmon with gnocchi and he thoroughly enjoyed it. He found the addition of cheese to the dish a little odd at first but said it was actually really tasty. We were staying at the hotel when we ate here. We arrived at 1.30pm to find we were the only people in the restaurant. The doors were wide open making the room very cold. The layout was fine, but (even after a couple more customers arrived) the atmosphere was flat. The booth we sat in was like one in a chippy.Service was poor - we were served by three different people - no choice of rolls as we were simply given one each. The customer experience was very disappointing. The food was ok, but my wife didn't enjoy the bangers and mash much. Burgers and chips were fine, but overpriced at £9.50...especially as toppings (cheese, bacon etc) were charged at £1 each! The salmon starter was tasty but far too large a portion...and far too high a price at £8.I suspect the location means passing trade is limited. To cap it all, we had to pass through a wall of smoke on leaving as two of the staff were smoking at the entrance as we left.

I was not going to eat my lunch wearing my coat and the staff brought a heater which made little impression. The meal was disappointing- both the turkey, stuffing and plum pudding were catering packs - there was no bread sauce, no cranberry sauce and the roasted potatoes were greasy and uncooked. The wine list had no French wines. The English speaking staff were attentive, others had a limited grasp of English.Cannot comment on bedrooms but the reception area with its fire was warm & welcoming.

I was part of a group booking at this restaurant for a set meal cost of £29.00. The food was extremely disappointing and did not live up to the expectation of the description on the menu. The starter of scallops (two very small scallops) and pork belly was okay at best. I ordered the turkey which was dreadfully overcooked and, as a result, very dry. The gravy was a small, dried up amount on the plate. I asked for extra gravy which did come but I am afraid did little to enhance the meal. Not only was the turkey dry but cut in thick slices which I was unable to eat. The accompanying "vegetables and potatoes" were insignificant. My partner did comment that the chocolate mousse was enjoyable. I ordered cheese and "biscuits" but this was served with bread? I did ask for biscuits and several mini oatcakes arrived. Coffee was just that, with no mint or, for example, small piece of Christmas cake. Overall, seriously overpriced at £29.00 and was not value for money under any circumstances.

Myself and 3 colleagues went for lunch as we work nearby. The business lunch (2 courses for £10) seemed like good value and being a business lunch would have expected quick service, not what we got. Out of 3 choices of starter only 2 were available, after chosing these we waited around 20 mins for them to arrive! I was dissapointed with my bland ceasar salad and was told the soup wasnt up to much either. The mains then took a further 20 mins to arrive, meanwhile other people were arriving and being told they couldnt have a table as was too busy! I would say the restaurant had about 15 people there (inc us 4) so not busy.Anyway mains arrived and again bland, hunters chicken..grilled chicken breast with what looked like smash potatoes (lumpy bland mash) a few carrots and a pointless gravy. Never seen hunters chicken done this way before.Massive let down, many more better options in the local area so dont waste your money or time..

This was supposed to be a treat for my small family on our long weekend in Edinburgh. I've left feeling utterly cheated and upset for taking them here. The portions were comparable to a fine dining a' la carte menu (at a push) which would have been acceptable if the food had been anywhere close to this standard. All three courses were seriously below par, the only thing that was 'nice' was the steak. The rosti was just unbelievable, I'd have sooner seen a hash brown on the plate. The scallop starter consisted of one and a half scallops, an appetiser at best. Whiskey jus was merely beef gravy. The kids menu doesn't exist, after some persuasion we were allowed to order from the bar menu for our 12 year old. She wanted macaroni cheese, there were only 3 tables in and somehow the kitchen got confused and she had to wait 30min for something on a par with a box of cheesy pasta. For desert she had ice cream, which would have roughly filled a shot glass. Avoid this place like the plague, I'm £80 out of pocket because I'm too nice to create a fuss. The waitress Laura was nice and polite but unfortunately this could not make up for this dive. Faulty towers would have been a better bet

I never expect to much from a Christmas meal but at the very least it could be served warm, my soup was look-warm, my turkey was very dry and cold and my cheese board consisted of one piece of cheese. To make matters worse the room we were sitting in was freezing, although I did notice a couple of electric heaters strategically placed around the room. The one positive was the price, at least it wasn't to expensive.

Our party was hosted in the Shackleton suite, which is a lovely room and was beautifully atmospheric. We chose from a limited menu in advance. I had the goats cheese, followed by colley, and plum pudding. The starter was unexciting (no beetroot, as described on the menu), but perfectly edible. The colley main course was probably the worst meal every put in front of me - the fish must have been cooked or kept warm for hours - dry, brown, totally inedible (also, it had gone cold). When people are having a nice time their friends no one wants to complain. However, when one of the staff came by and asked if everything was ok with the meal, I called her over, told her my main course was inedible and sent it back. Most of us thought that, but didn't like to make a fuss. To be fair, the head waiter came and offered me another main course, but as that would take 15 minutes or so I declined (as the others would be finished). I pointed out to him that many of the others were leaving a great deal on their plates, and he did offer to bring replacements to anyone who wanted it. I declined this as it was just going the make the whole evening so upsetting. As I was leaving the man at the reception desk asked if we'd enjoyed our evening, so I'm afraid that I did give him my opinion of his chef! (ie, that he should have been ashamed to send such dreadful food up). I don't know if they do better for a couple or small group but do not book Channings for a Christmas party!

This looks such a delightful hotel, all wood panelled rooms, squashy sofas and cosy corners, many reflecting the history of the Antarctic explorer, Earnest Shackleton, who lived there for a while during the early 20th century. However, we were there just for lunch and entered through the downstairs bar where we encountered a first disappointment - there was no sherry (none at all) and then no Lea and Perrins for a tomato juice. Although there were no other diners (why,on a December weekend?), the dining room was warm and welcoming, the 'Christmas' menu interesting and refreshingly short. Sadly, the starters were unremarkable and all the mains a little disappointing: the turkey and trimmings were served without any green vegetables; the salmon, hot and well cooked, was served with tepid kale and mash, the latter rather dried out and lumpy. And the beetroot and horseradish rice cake which sounded so fascinating and which we all wanted to taste, had neither the zing of horseradish nor the earthiness of beetroot. The Sauvignon Blanc was good, cool and elderflowery. We passed on the puds but with coffee came a slim, shortbready biscuit. Oh, and the little corridor outside the toilets was a bit niffy ...

Entered the well lit bar area and turned right to be greeted by a young lady. Shown into the dining room which is below ground and quite dark. Only one other couple seated. We had been told we could only book for either 6 or 9 o'clock strange as they were not busy. Menus provided and eventually a jug of tap water. Menu is quite small as were the subsequent portions. Ordered a bottle of wine which again took some time to appear and the food. Smoked salmon for starters 3 small pieces about half the size of a streaky bacon rasher. Tasty. Mains were fillet of sea bream which looked as though under law it should have been returned to the sea. Saving grace was the chocolate pudding which required a wait of 12 minutes. Not so ours took 25 minutes. I could accept this in a busy restaurant but with only one other couple! It was a bit disappointing as we have eaten here before. Glad we were eating on a voucher as I would not liked to have paid full price. Don't think we will return

Das Ambiente ist ansprechend aber nicht übermässig. Dafür war das Essen ausgesprochen gut und ansprechend angerichtet.

Was glad to find that the bar menu was available since the restaurant was closed, which I hadn't expected. Choice was limited but OK. The vegetable tempura was almost entirely carrots which was a wee bit disappointing but the sandwich I had to follow was excellent - very good value as well as being tasty.

The food was tastefully prepared! It was also very convenient as we were guests at the Channings Hotel.

The food here was very good and unique. Very creative chef. The restaurant is in the lower level of the hotel, so a bit small and darker, but that just made it more cozy and romantic.

A fairly small restaurant, but the tables are well-spaced to allow a fair degree of privacy. Fairly limited menu but the chef was able to accomodate a request for a variation on the main offering. Friendly staff and a good wine-list.

What a surprise! I ordered the burger from the bar menu with onions, cheese and bacon and it was INCREDIBLE! Delicious, and a good price too. Can't wait to go back!

Our Literary Society, The Dorothy Dunnett Society, pre-booked our lunch. We were met warmly by the manager. We sat down to a beautifully set table, in a charming room. The food was delicious. We were served by friendly and discreet staff, who tended to our every need. The atmosphere in Channings is efficient but informal and the decor is traditional with very modern amenities. We liked best,as well as the food, the attention to detail, and the feeling that the staff's main concern was our comfort.

Restaurant hidden away from main road so very quiet. reasonably busy for Sunday lunch. We had been given the lunch as a present via a voucher deal. Fizz was brought to the table without asking and I was not drinking so had to be exchanged.Starters were so so. the fishcake had way too much potato in it. Main courses were on the small side and not very inspiring. Hubbie didn't really like any of the choices but went for the chicken leg which looked more like a child's portion. Puddings were unexciting and small. If I had paid £19 for this (with a glass of sweet fizz) I would have felt short changed. There are Michelin restaurants in Edinburgh offering lunch at not much more than this price.Good job we are on a diet! The lunch is called "ladies who lunch" so perhaps they all assume we have ladylike appetites!Difficult if you are disabled as restaurant is in basement.

Went for Sunday lunch on an 'Itison' deal, along with everyone else in this hotel restaurant, it seems. Service was poor; after being directed downstairs to the restaurant by the pleasant reception staff, we were left waiting for over 10 minutes before a member of staff appeared. There were absolutely no staff to be found, and we practically walked into the kitchen in our quest to find someone to assist us. The diners already seated in the restaurant all seemed to be waiting to be served too. The meal was average at best, a choice of soup, one solitary fish cake or ham hough to start, followed by chicken, salmon or polenta cake for the vegetarians. The choice was uninspiring and boring, the portions were small, although tasty. Dessert was okay, a banana 'mess' although completely lacking in meringue, bought-in chocolate cake or some cheese. We visited with a child but the children's menu was uninteresting and expensive, so my child ended up eating from the adult menu, which was in fact a better deal. What surprised me the most was that we were never asked if we wanted any drinks with our meal, apart from the drink included in the deal, nor whether we would like coffee or anything else at the end. I found this surprising as surely it is through the add-ons that a restaurant or hotel hopes to make some of the money back on what was basically a two-for-one lunch deal. I agree with other diners that the restaurant is dull and dingy, while the rear sunny room was not being used at all. As an aside I found the staff answering the phone when I called to book the table unfriendly and some effort has to be put into answering the telephone before the 20th ring, I almost gave up. Will not be returning.

Well, this is an interesting one. My family booked a table for lunch at Channings via a 'itison' offer. The deal was for a three course lunch. We had dined at Channings before and found it to be a decent restaurant. All of us at the table found the meal to be most acceptable. Salmon and chicken for main courses were delicious. I'd rate the food as 8/10. The reason behind not giving a slightly higher score was that our desserts were not quite as good as the main and the starters. My chocolate cake was too dry and needed some ice cream for example. However, all in all a most pleasant Saturday afternoon. Wine reasonably priced (from £15 upwards).Staff were generally friendly, although we were met by a waiter at the beginning whose demeanour could be construed as slightly ?grumpy - anyway, this didn't detract from the visit.Would recommend.

We had been here before and had a lovely but expensive lunch so we thought we would return, we went through to the restuarant were we had been to before, but it was empty, we went through to the bar and asked the waiter if there was another restuarant,we were told to wait he would deal with us in a minute as he was busy, the barman pointed us in the direction of the other restuarant. I got thai fishcakes for a starter, 2 fishcakes, which if you put them together would be smaller than a golf ball with a couple of rocket leaves, but I must say delicious, for dessert we got banana mess, ours arrived in a different glass from the other diners, about half the size, with no mess only banana, cream and a sauce, again a minute portion, with no crunch no merangue in it, we did comment to the waitress, who came back and told us the chef said there was merangue in it. The service was very poor 1 waiter and 1 waitress who could only do 1 task at a time.It was a lovely fine sunny day and we were all cramped in this grotty dark dining room whilst the lovely rear sunny room lay empty,Dont go here, there are much better and cheaper restuarants in the area.

Staying at Channings, we had the opportunity to try the Bar for two dinners as well as the breakfast room for two breakfasts. At first we weren't sure what we were in for as the Bar is composed of a few small rooms. But, quickly we found that the food was terrific, particularly the fish and chips which was not a favorite beforehand but, given the quality of this fish and this batter, became that for the rest of our trip to Scotland where we measured every fish and chip plate with Channings and Channings came out on top every time! Then, as more people sat down, we noticed that there were many local people who were coming for their regular, daily sit-downs, drinks, food and chat. There was a good atmosphere in the Bar with helpful staff and convivial feeling. For breakfast, there was a sufficient set of choices, both set out and ordered, including a Scottish breakfast.

Booked a lunch for two (1:00 weekday). Got there on time. We were put in the dark dining-room (sunny outside; they may have a terrace somewhere?) and given menus. We asked for some (tap) water; would order wine later. There was one other party in, being served. Three waiting staff visible. Fifteen minutes later, no-one had come near us to take an order, or bring the water, or even explain any delay. We left. The staff hanging about in the (empty) bar seemed slightly surprised but didn't say anything.

The menu was not expansive but the food was delicious! You have the option of eating at the bar where you have things like fish and chips or eating in the proper restaurant where there are meals like duck, lamb etc. The desserts are great too! (Try the sticky toffee pudding!)

We ate in Channings Restaurant a couple of times while staying there recently. It has good food - very good food - and VERY friendly staff but the room is dark - just dismal - in a North-facing basement, more than just 'tired'. Does that explain why it was almost empty both times, with that sad feeling of lots of set-but-empty tables? Is it time for a management re-think and re-vamp? We think so.[The restaurant is not the same room as the cheerier breakfast conservatory]

My lunch was very poor value, in particular the salad. A very small serving of potato salad, watery Greek salad and 8-9 small mixed leaves cost £7.50. I thought it was coronation chicken but it was tatties ! Had to wait a while at the counter to be served too. Won’t be back.

I used to frequent Cafe Truva at the shore a number of years ago and was looking forward to visiting their Lady Lawson street branch on a visit to town. What a disappointment! The ‘panini spice’ that I used to love was a delicious mix of spiced chicken, mozzarella and sun dried tomatoes served with a lovely Turkish-salad meze. Unfortunately there must be profit margins to protect here and the quality of product has been compromised beyond all recognition...bland strips of processed chicken, one piece of sun dried tomato all cooked without seemingly much care. The side salad used to be a real treat served with feta cheese, stuffed vine leaves, tzatziki and cous cous, instead you are now served some chopped lettuce, tomato and cucumber with no dressing.....distressing stuff. I hope they are reading and take these comments into consideration, will not return in a hurry which is a crying shame.
