We had been recommended to try this restaurant, so we tried it. Our first indication that this might not have been a good choice was that no one ever came to our table to begin the service! Everything was on us, from ordering drinks, food, dessert menu or the check. We never received any water or were asked if we wanted anything. Now we did see a glimmer of hope from some of the staff, but one waitress seemed like she would rather be somewhere else. It was like it was the first night they had been open and no one knew what to do. Now it was not all bad, as the food was good, plenty of it and at a fair price. Proceed with caution and definitely be assertive with the staff!!!

All too often in this country you come across Italian food that is average at best, so I didn't have high hopes for a pub with a largely Italian menu (and, oddly, fish and chips). I am pleased to admit I was completely in the wrong! The staff were friendly, the place was packed (the first time we tried to get in it was full so we booked for later in the week), and the food was really good. The prices were also reasonable; had we been in the area for longer I would definitely have gone back for a second visit. Definitely recommend if you are in Alnmouth.

We ate here on Saturday the14th of October and what a delight. I had filled spinach and ricotta pasta with a garlic and mushroom sauce and I can honestly say it was amazing! My husbands calzone was huge with plenty of sauce to go with it. My sister in law and partner had pizza which they loved(my sis had to take half of hers away with her. I must say a big shout out and huge thanks to the gentleman serving everyone, he never had a minute but no-one was left waiting and he was always curteous and friendly, can highly recommend.

Been coming here for years, but didnt realise it was now an Italian. The online menu provided "pub food"...beef/steak/fish etc. I booked on-line ..assuming we would be seated in the pub restaurant. On arrival ..the young lady said we were to be seated in the Italian. I said we didnt want Italian and wanted to be seated in the pub restaurant for pub food. We were told it was full, but it didnt look full. We were seated in a " dog friendly " Italian. I love and own dogs but this was borderline ridiculous. I dont agree with dogs being in a food area. We were seated in a corner with approx 4 other tables and there were 8 dogs all laid around the floor. The waitress was really sruggling to serve dishes of food and striding over all these dogs. Plus the owners of the dogs next to us did nothing when their dog attempted to steal my husbands garlic bread off the table. !! Not ideal for a relaxing evening meal. The gentleman taking orders and serving food was in a flat spin, he asked us for a drink order, and after about 3 seconds said , we are really busy, you will have to wait. I will have to come back. Quite rude. The food was good, tasty and the potions were a good size. I dont know if we would return....I think that allowing dogs in a small eating area is un-hygenic.

Food was quite acceptable. What was disappointing was joining a queue by the entrance to pay while customers were arriving (one group asked to wait outside in the rain as their table was still occupied) and takeaways being collected at the same point. Last year payment was taken at the table and diners exited via a different door, i.e. a one way system. Didn't feel safe.

If you are planning a trip to Alnmouth and tried to pre-book the restaurant without any joy, I would recommend turning up and asking for any available slots. This is what we did and the staff were able to find us a table for the next day (Saturday). Staff were really friendly and helpful. Food was fantastic and fresh and of Great value. Our group opted for the Happy Hour option which runs from 4PM - 5:30PM offering 2 course for £15 and 3 for £20 which was unbelievable considering the quality of the food. The night we came only the bar area was open as the restaurant was being refurbished. We were shown to our table with a menu when we arrived, with no offer of a pre-dinner drink, then we were simply ignored. When the people who came after us had their order taken, I got up, found a member of staff and asked him to take our order. When the wine was brought, the bottle and glasses were placed on the table. No offer was made to open the wine or for us to taste it. The food was brought, plates were taken away. No-one asked us what we thought of the food. We were not offered more drinks, desserts, coffee or even the bill. Whilst the food was as good as the last time we were here, it was not a pleasant experience to spend the whole evening being made to feel as if we were completely invisible.

We (2 people) went for an evening meal of italian cuisine here, were seated promptly and provided with a varied menu and drinks list. The restaurant was fairly busy with a few tables of six or so people but the ambiance was pleasant and not too noisy. The staff were attentive despite being busy. When our order was taken, there was a fairly significant wait before our meals arrived, presumably because the kitchen was busy with lots of orders as well at the food being cooked to order. The food was very good, decent portions, freshly made and reasonably priced for what we had. All in all a pleasant experience, with the only slight blemish being the length of time we had to wait, but I suppose this was undrstandable under the circumstances. We would visit again but try to avoid a busy time in order to achieve a reduced waiting time if possible.

We visited after a day in Alnwick and a few hours on Alnmouth beach, and were all finished so was delighted to find a restaurant with a menu that suited us all. From the start, the staff were friendly and made a fuss of our 4yr old boy who was thrilled to be sat watching the pizzas being made (and talking to the poor chef, giving him tips on sprinkling cheese!!) The head chef let our son ring the bell for service which he found very fun! We got a child's margarita pizza, an adult vegetable pizza and I had the lobster linguine off the specials after reading all the positive reviews on here! Firstly, the adult pizza was very crisp and tasty, and they keep the children's pizza smaller and slightly thicker, which was ideal for us. Secondly, my lobster linguine was absolutely delicious! The pasta sauce was tasty with a little bit of heat, and with probably half a lobsters worth of meat! Very large portion which I couldn't finish, but I had also been eating the tasty fries too! Well worth booking a table if you're in the area, and when we're back in Northumberland, we'll definitely be back!!

We shared a starter: the house bruschetta; it was the best we've ever eaten. Our mains were also excellent. I had the fresh cod with tomato sauce, so rich and tasty; and my husband one of the specials that day, pigeon breast and pigeon ravioli. This is a nice ex-pub. I don't mean anything bad by this, it is just it has evolved into a resturant. You can still drink beer if you want. My 8 year old daughter and I had pizzas and some sides, plus really tasty ice cream. The pizzas were good UK Italian, by which I mean tasty but typical "faults" compared to the pizza motherland - too much cheese/ to much topping/ not hard baked enough. But we really enjoyed them. They let well behaved dogs into the bar area. This seems to be a trend at least in Northumbria. I like it (we didn't bring our own dogs) for years I have wondered how come quite fancy restaurants in France/ Germany/ Italy etc can cope with dogs while NO DOGS BUT GUIDE DOGS is still not unusual in UK. The staff were really lovely to my young daughter.

Mixed thoughts. We booked (party of 6) weeks in advance in 'Italia' restaurant. On arrival, there was a great deal of messing about by the staff about which table to put us on - offering us a table in the bar by the door, which we refused. We had been told when booking how great it was to watch the chef preparing pizzas in the wood-fired oven in the restaurant. Eventually, they found us a table for 6 in the restaurant, which was not over-busy, and could have been sorted much faster. We ordered drinks & food (they forgot the water). Food came quickly enough and was delicious, fresh and very tasty - from Stroganoff to Pasta & Pizzas. Be warned though - even with a temperature of around 12 degrees outside, it was incredibly hot in the restaurant.

One chair was already touching a chair of the table next to it, before anyone had sat down even. We asked for another table, perhaps one with more space, like the one set for four by the window. The waitress said they couldn’t do that. I totally understand, particularly as I have since looked at the response by the manager to a similar post, that it is not their policy. Same situation as other post, there were only two other people in the whole restaurant. Waitress was off handed, didn’t even look up when we left. Probably used to it.

However we asked for water with our alcoholic drinks and before the starter came out and we still did not have our water after we ate our starter, we had to ask for the waters again which took another good 10 minutes to come (it was not busy). Visited here with family whilst holidaying in the area. Had booked in advance based upon other reviews. We booked a table for 7 plus 1 highchair - the highchair wasn't at the table and we ended up getting it ourself because no one offered to do so and throughout the meal we had a spare chair next to us which no one bothered to move our our way. There was a bit of a delay taking our order but they were quite busy. The food then took quite a while to arrive but was all lovely - between us we had various pasta, pizza dishes and the stroganoff - all were very nice. We had two waitresses - one was very pleasant, one was disinterested and barely acknowledged anything we asked or said and pretty much looked miserable all night. For example - we asked for an extra wine glass - she said nothing before going to get it. We were on a long table and one of our party asked where the dessert spoons were - she said 'I've just put them all in the middle of the table", we asked if our toddler (who had set her heart on a piece of chocolate cake) could have a half portion - she said "no, they're pre-sliced" so our 2 year old had a huge slice of chocolate cake and ice cream put in front of her - a waste really. Basically she could not do much less for us and we've never seen anyone less bothered about customer service - there was no attempt to be civil let alone polite and welcoming. At the end of our meal, after waiting, we had to go and find our waitress to ask for the bill - she was chatting with two other staff members and said, abruptly again, "you pay at the bar" - if we'd been told this we'd have done it instead of waiting around. The service alone means we won't be going back and will take our custom elsewhere. Shame, because the food is very nice.

This is our third visit. We've learned our lesson about booking a table in advance, and its worth the small effort to do so. The specials are special - the lobster linguine was outstanding. Friendly and attentive service, and 3 times out of three now we feel we can rely on having an excellent meal.

We'd been waiting all year to visit this restaurant on our next visit to the area & really looked forward to it. However, although the food was excellent we can't say the same for the service. My glass of white wine arrived warm and I had to ask for ice cubes. Water requested with our meal didn't arrive until we had finished, despite asking again. The response from the waitress was she'd put the order in at the bar and left us with a feeling of "it's not my job" The barman's response was that he had 7 tabs on to action and takeaways to deal with - although he did apologise. I grant they were busy, with just one waitress serving in the restaurant and the meals were served on time and very tasty - but as constructive criticism I would suggest they need more staff in future.

Whilst ny husband went for pizza albeit a potato pizza (which was very good) I opted for sea bass from the specials. With mussels and potato in a lightly curried sauce. It was super. Beautifully cooked sea bass and just a hint Of curry. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Fab food and service. It get's full up pretty quickly so advisable to book. We were sat next to the serving hatch and could see the head Chef at work, he was so great with the rest of the staff. Can't wait to go again next time we're in town x

We are in Alnmouth on holiday and decided to have a meal at Italia (2 adults, 2 teenagers). In many ways, Italia is an unlikely restaurant. It is attached to the Hope and Anchor pub which, I am sure, at one time was a basic old-school pub, but which has been refurbished in a different style. To be honest, the pub part of the business lacks in a bit of character and identity, in my opinion, but Italia is genuinely superb. The restaurant is nicely done with exposed stonework, and the staff are pleasant and professional. The real star of the show, however, is the food. Pizzas come from a wood-fired oven and there appears to be just two chefs in a tiny, open-plan kitchen, but service is very efficient. I have eaten many pizzas over the years but reckon that my calzone was the best pizza I've ever eaten. It was beautifully cooked and packed with fresh ingredients and, wonderfully, was served with a dish of fresh Napoli sauce. My family all had pizzas and we shared some very fresh side salads. Another plus point for me is the fact that real ale can be brought through from the bar area. Italia is clearly popular and no wonder- the food is absolutely top drawer. We'll be back before the week is out. Unconditionally recommended.

We turned up yesterday (4th July) at 5pm. There were 4 people in the restaurant and we asked for a table for 2 by the window as there were 3 empty windows tables. We were told we could not do this and were shown a tiny table in the centre of the room. I declined the table and asked if the tables in the window set for 4 people were reserved. i was advised no. I asked why we couldn't have one then as they were anything but busy. I was advised that they were not allowed to let 2 people have a table for 4 in case 4 people came in. I asked if they were serious as the restaurant was nearly empty. i was advised that this was the case. The manager was not available, surprise surprise, so we left. Staggering lack of service and rules based approach that just lost them circa £100 in takings....

Booking is essential , as with most of the restaurants in Alnmouth. We had a quick , one course pasta meal which was tasty , not too large (maybe too small for some) and which cost about £15 per head. I don't consider this cheap for a pasta dish but the quality was very good.

My sister and family were visiting and the 6 of us went to The Italia for a final meal. Being bank holiday weekend it was incredibly busy but the staff, though rushed of their feet were very helpful and child friendly. The food was delicious, the pizza was voted the best in North Northumberland by David and my seafood linguine was full of seafood, garlic and chilli, delicious. Infact three of us had that and all loved it. You can get a happy hour meal between 4.00 and 5.30 (from 4.30pm until 5.30pm on Sundays) - All pizza & pasta from main menu is £7.95. I've been and had a happy hour meal a few times and the food is just as goodBooking is essential as Alnmouth is a tourist hotspot. The only problem we had is that restaurant does get very warm when the restaurant is full.

It was a busy night but still no excuse for very patchy service. The starters arrived at the same time as the main course - we suggested they took the starters back. The main dishes were good, nothing special but your usual reliable Italian pasta dishes.

If you enjoy pasta dishes especially with seafood then you will love this restaurant. Also don't be afraid to try their traditional fish and chips, simply wonderful. My wife found the pizzas excellent. The crab soup and the grilled sardines are highly recommended as starters. Always busy it pays to book or eat very early.

Thought I'd try the pizza with potatoes, and it was absolutely wonderful. More subtle than it sounds, just a few slices of new potato scattered among the other toppings. I assume they have a wood fired oven, because the base was perfect, and it was served pretty quickly (especially considering how busy they were). I like pizzas, and I've had some very good ones, but this was certainly up there with the best. My wife had the vegetarian risotto, and they were happy to make this with less cheese than usual, to suit her tastes. Nice choice of beers too (it's attached to a pub, so that helps). Service was efficient as well as friendly and helpful. So overall, this place is definitely recommended. If you want to sit in the restaurant area, you probably need to book in advance, though I noticed that they offered seats in the pub to some of the people who came without booking. I guess the food is the same, but it didn't look as comfortable.
