Outstanding dinner in historic coaching inn. We had the fried brie and duck breast appetizers. I had the venison casserole which was one of the best dishes I've had in Scotland. If staying at the inn, make a reservation at the restaurant. Highly recommended.

What an amazing buffet/lunch was provided from The Inn at Lathones restaurant for my husbands 50th celebrations. We visited for the weekend to celebrate and on Friday asked that a buffet be provided for everyone arriving. The staff went out of their way to cater to our needs, and even provided a gluten free plate to ensure everyone had an amazing selection. The food surpassed anything we had hoped for, and we cannot thank the chef, management and staff for their help.

My second time staying here and absolutely love it. Beautiful countryside setting close to St Andrews. I love everything about it here, location. Staff, super friendly. Food, very high standards. The interior feels very warm and inviting. I had a good laugh and chat with Jennifer tonight, all the staff are great I just didn’t get all of their names. However I have 2 major complaints, I’m only staying one night and there are so many inviting dishes on the menu!

Last minute decision to go out for dinner and the Inn is only 10 mins from home. Had heard great reviews of the place and decided to give it a try. Immediately thrilled with the restaurant setting - so much quirky potential. The old barn would make an excellent setting if properly styled. There was obviously the start to something. Loved the fire place and lighting at the log stores. Very interesting and well styled. The other areas would do well to match that simple standard. The tables themselves were a bit fussy with white table clothes and settings. I can see the potential to be a high end restaurant and the aspiration to be one in some of the setting/styling choices but there are a few considerations to be undertaken (the bookcase of wine isn’t nearly as interesting as the wine cellar as you come in, the paint work is patchy, the radiators old fashioned, a huge cobweb hung above our table etc). As for the menu. I was disappointed not to see a seasonal menu and a daily specials board. We are in an amazing place for produce and would have expected to see local and seasonal produce on the menu. The menu choice was therefore quite limited (pub grub rather than restaurant choices). No fresh fish options!! All breaded or battered! Come on, we are in Fife! The menu itself wasn’t very high end, modern or fresh. There are some very good examples of modern stylish menu deliveries available but the menus themselves were cheap laminated sheets in an old menu folder. The dining experience these days is more than the food in front of you. It is the dining experience (of which the food and drink is a part but not the sum). The food. Unfortunately the food choice was fairly limited and not that exciting. We opted for two different starters; lemon sole goujons (with a shop bought tartar sauce) and truffle pasta. Seasoning wasn’t quite right and the salad with the goujons way over dressed with a shop bought French dressing. The pasta was rich and needed an oil (wild garlic would have been nice) to cut through the richness - which became a creamy pulp in the mouth. For main we had chicken parmigiana and a sirloin steak. Again seasoning for both dishes was way off. The chicken meat itself was under seasoned and the tomato sauce (which tasted like a tin of tomatoes/purée) was missing any seasoning at all. No herbs, garlic or anything. The sauce seemed like it was just a tin of tomatoes poured onto the chicken. We took most of that away to feed to the dog at home. The fries that came with the chicken were far too salty to be enjoyed. The steak was tasty but inconsistently cooked. I ordered a blue steak and most of it was cooked medium-rare. The steak was seasoned well. I’d actually order that again. The sides were overly salty garlic mushrooms, grilled tomato and overly salty fried onions. The balance of seasoning was terrible. The truffle dauphinois potatoes were actually delicious. Dessert could have been spectacular but again where was the seasonality - we opted to share tarte tatin but again we were disappointed. The tarte (although small) was delicious however all the shop bought caramel sauce and so called raspberry coulis destroyed it. The caramel far too artificial and sweet and the raspberry way too bitter. A home made coulis would have been delicious. We had coffee and two g&ts before leaving. For our meal - 2 starters, 2 mains (one steak) and one dessert, two g&ts and a coffee our bill came to around £85. Service was good, settings could be amazing but the food let it all down. The chef either isn’t tasting or has no taste buds. The menu limited and not seasonal, fresh or inventive and for the cost vs quality it wasn’t really good value.

The food, the food - well you won't be disappointed. Starters of muscles, garlic mushrooms and baked Camembert were thoroughly enjoyed following by the most amazing locally caught haddock and chips. The portion did not warrant a starter. The breakfast menu was extensive - not like we have seen in a while - and all meals were excellently presented and tasted wonderful. The waiting staff were attentive and friendly and we wanted for nothing.

What a beautiful surprise this restaurant was. When you’re eating at a property outside of town you never know what you’re going to get, but this was a destination that I would have driven from St. Andrews to dine at. Funny story- we had eaten lunch at the Road Hole at the Old Course hotel in St. Andrews that day and we were really disappointed. They had accidentally given our lunch order away as room service so we didn’t get food until almost an hour after we were seated. And my salmon sandwich was as plain as plain could be. I had such high hopes for such a famous property, and the servers spent more time talking with each other than looking after guests. But then we get to Inn at Lathones Restaurant. The service here was impeccable- attentive but not overbearing. Every request was executed efficiently and immediately. Honestly, what I got here was what I was looking for at Road Hole. And the food at Lathones was divine. It was shocking to get such elevated presentation at what I thought was a humble inn. Humble my foot. It was the best food we had around St. Andrews. We count ourselves lucky to have stumbled into such a beautiful experience.

He was so attentive, checking if we needed anything throughout the evening! Nice amount of time between courses, The food was great, haggis and black pudding started was delicious as was the ham hock starter! The steak pie was full of meat and cooked perfectly! Chicken and haggis main course was really tasty and my partner was very impressed with the mixed grill too! Chocolate fondant dessert was lovely but the tart Tatin was absolutely beautiful served with soft vanilla ice cream, the apples were caramelised and delicious! Really great meal and super service! We ate on 4 nights here as part of a DB&B break at the Inn at Lathones. The Piece de Resistance is the restaurant which recently opened in the former stables. Very ambiente, with bar and an impressive log burning stove. Our meals and the service were excellent in the Stables Restaurant by the big log fire. Good choices on the dinner menu, all delicious and generously portioned. Starter+Main+Dessert is definately a challenge! Bar prices are slightly upmarket high street, between £4 to £5 for pints or spirits with mixer. No hesitation in recommending.

The Inn at Lathones is a great place to stay. It combines an old Inn, coach house and restaurant, dating back to 1600. It is full of history, character and charm. Only 6 or so miles from St Andrews, it is the perfect place for a quiet relaxing break with easy access to other surrounding areas, including Leven and Crail. The restaurant and bar are cosy and the open fires were a real treat. The food was our highlight and Dinner and Breakfast were absolutely amazing. I loved the evening meal opting for the rib of beef and to finish rhubarb 3 ways (crumble, trifle and sorbet)😀. Lee created these dishes and they were quite simply delicious! No surprise the Inn has won awards, year on year. All the staff work very hard. Special mention to Lee the General Manager who couldn’t do enough for us during our stay. We will definitely return and could not fault our stay.

Had a lovely meal here a couple of years ago so booked for my friend’s birthday meal. Asked at booking if we could bring two dogs as on holiday and couldn’t leave them in accommodation. Website says pet friendly and I was told on the phone that would be fine. We had just arrived when a man (I assume the manager from his officious tone) stopped us and said - “no dogs”. I politely explained we had booked and were told the dogs were welcome. “No dogs” - at first he refused to accept I had been told this then asked who I’d spoken to etc and he worked out who it was. The young woman was not on duty and I don’t envy her next shift! We didn’t have many other options after 8pm for 5 adults & 2 dogs in the East Neuk of Fife for a birthday celebration. So after much bemoaning and telling us what he couldn’t do to accommodate us we were ushered into a large empty function room with lots of furniture and two separate tables which we pulled together. A young lad was told to set up the tables and proceeded to sigh loudly several times. We thought perhaps he was just embarrassed by the awkwardness of the situation but as time wore on and many more loud sighs were heard along with his regular comments such as “oh I really want to go home” etc we realised he really didn’t want to be there - a feeling increasingly shared by us!!! We asked if he could turn off the very bright centre light and put on the wall lights to try to engender some slight ambience. This he did - one pale green wall light spookily flickered for a while and then went out. The radiators remained cold despite the rest of the building being warm, no napkins, no candles, no water despite regular requests to the young ‘waiter’, as a nod to the birthday I was promised ‘something special with desert to make up for our discomfort’ - nothing except the ordered deserts arrived. We did receive a complementary bottle of wine. The young lad left before we had finished our meal and the manager agreed he had wanted to go home two minutes after he arrived for work! The whole place had a tired and unloved feel. The only saving grace was that amazingly the food was very good. My friend said she was unlikely to ever forget that particular birthday- thankfully we managed to laugh about it but I for one was left embarrassed and wishing we had been anywhere else. You really couldn’t make it up - echoes of Fawlty Towers.

4 of us ate at The Inn at Lathones Restaurant. It's on the main road between Leven and St Andrews and incorporates over 20 separate accommodation rooms which, when we ate there, were mostly fully booked with visiting golfers. On the managements advice we booked an early evening table as it gets very busy later (even in a mid-week).Very attentive staff welcomed us, sat us down for a drink and then took our order including being very helpful with offerings of Gluten Free food for one of our party. The food was prepared and we were taken through to a lovely beam-roofed dining area where we enjoyed 3 courses of lovely food served in a very attentive manner. The Inn has plenty of off road parking right next to the restaurant and accommodations which all on the level if you were, as one of our party was, a little unsteady on your feet. The Inn is close to St Andrews, Leven and the whole East of Fife coastal route and we would not hesitate recommending it to anyone passing through the area!

Stayed at this hotel as there was no where else near St Andrews to stay, decided to eat here as it was a horrible night outside and we regretted it. Firstly when we came into the bar we were abruptly told to sit down on the sofa and he would be there in a minute, which was actually 10 mins, we were given menus and asked what we wanted to drink i had a pint of lager which was OK priced and my partner had a normal Eden mill beer which had no price on the list but turned out to be £4-55. We actually ordered the cheapest thing on the menu which was 2 burgers and chips which were £27 for the 2 of them, so to sum it up this place charges 5 star prices for a 3 star establishment with 3 star service.

Mmm.. where to start. The room was horrific, as was the bathroom. It looked like it was built in 1981 and had NEVER been touched again. The bathroom was like my grandma's - and she has been dead for nearly 30 years - it is honestly the worst hotel room i have seen in the last 20 years. The shower, I believe a prototype electric shower from the 70's, had two settings - nuclear fallout skin removal or cold. But don't worry, there was a bidet. As of course our priority in booking a room in 2017 is the need for a bidet. The towels reminded me of waterproof sand paper - washed so many times over so many decades that the ability to absorb water had long since ended. The room was bang on the main road and the windows were single glazed and didn't shut properly. I heard every car that went past with Dolby Atmos clarity. And! Be careful not to break your toes on The two raised grates outside The Room! The white radiator had now turned black over time. I think The walls may have been white in 1981 but now they are a nicotine-fested lung yellow. The TV was 12" and didn't work,It just had an error message on it in Portuguese. The restaurant was so tired and worn out that you could see the route everyone had taken from chair to buffet over the last 40 years. Pease don't try the concentrated orange juice! The best way to quickly assess if the owners care about your comfort and happiness or just their margin is to look at the toilet roll, and the sausage served with breakfast. The toilet roll was 1 nanometer thick and reminded me of school toilet roll in 1979. Tracing paper. The word Andrex had never been uttered in this establishment. The sausage was one of those that stays pink, no matter how much you accidentally over-cook it. If it was locally sourced than I can understand that, as there is an Aldi at Cuper 3 miles away. The place was in farmland on a busy road with no footpaths so you couldn't go for a walk, and you couldn't really sit outside as the aged B&Q chairs were 30% bird excrement. You could stroll around the car park and marvel at the contents of the skip or tge depressing nature of the attached caravan site.Given the arrival of either a £1million makeover or an exorcet missile, this place could actually be quite nice.Unsurprisingly when we checked out no one asked if we had enjoyed the stay. I have a feeling that they knew the answer already.

We were given a gift of dinner for 2 at The Inn Lathones, never been before despite living fairly near, and not sure what to expect. Firstly, we were welcomed and sat in the enchanting lounge with a log fire and comfy leather sofas. Enjoyed a pre dinner gin from their varied selection with drinks advice from the manager. When we were seated at our table, we were delighted with the water cups, which very ''Game of Throneish''. We both decided to have the soup to start with, which was served with freshly baked rolls, made daily and so amamzing we could have eaten a whole plate of them!! My husband had his favourite, haddock and chips, which was light, fresh and in a crispy batter. I decided to have the sea bass with gnocchi and thoroughly enjoyed it, it was a wonderful combination. After all this, we shared (almost shared) the Tonka bean pannacotta, it just melted in your mouth, so delicious my husband only got a little taste. The staff were friendly and efficient, the surroundings clean and welcoming with an airy restaurant which din't have tables packed in tightly together. We will definately be returning soon. Highly recommended.

We stayed here after attending a wedding at Kinross House on Saturday. Staff were very friendly when we booked in and showed us to our room promptly. We were asked if we wanted to eat in the restaurant and booked a table for 7.30pm. We went to the restaurant around 7.20pm and were told they were running a little late as they were training two new staff members. We asked at 8pm if our table would be ready soon, we were told "shortly " we eventually were seated at 9pm. I have a medical condition that means I cannot eat too late in the evening and was struggling and had to leave half way through my main. My wife went and explained to the manager that we would need to leave. He told her " here's a tip, tell the restaurant in future" well here a tip seat your guests sooner than 1 and a half hours after they have booked.

We stayed here after visiting St Andrews and certainly made a good choice! The bar was cosy, relaxing and welcoming. The staff were helpful and very efficient.Everyone chose different things from the menu and everything was amazing! The venison was tender and had a beautiful flavour, steak cooked to perfection and the haddock was big and beautiful! The flavoured homemade bread blue cheese and leek was the best ever! What a treat we loved it!Overall a wonderful eating experience all round with nothing too much trouble.

Last summer two friends and I had lunch at the Inn at Lathones and could not sing its praises high enough, so when my husband suggested going somewhere special for a post Christmas treat there was only one choice. We drooled over the images of beautiful food on their website and booked taxis both ways from home so that we could relax and have some wine with our meal. The log burner was cosy, the leather sofas were sink into comfy and we ordered two glasses of a very nice sauvignon blanc to enjoy while we perused the menu. What the website didn't tell us was that during winter months there is no a la carte menu, only a bar supper one at £15.00 for two courses and £18.00 for three, with nothing on it that I couldn't make at home. Stuck there with the return taxi not due until 10.15pm, we ordered starters of black pudding with poached egg, hollandaise sauce with crispy bacon rasher and a goat's cheese and red onion marmalade tartlet. Both were excellent. However with only a very basic choice of steak pie, roast chicken, burger, fish and chips, salmon and a veggie option my husband reluctantly chose the fish and chips and against my better judgement I ordered the burger. This for our "treat". The fish was fine but both portions of chips were overcooked to the point of being on the new carcinogenic hit list. The burger was like a thin piece of rubber with an unpleasant texture. The two bacon rashers atop it were thick and undercooked and the topping of blue cheese was parsimonious to say the least. The side pot of salsa (I suspect El Paso) and the slightly oily coleslaw were unappetising. I could only manage three mouthfuls. We asked for the bill and the waiter said "I knew this was going to happen. Just pay for the wine". We did and escaped into a hastily rearranged taxi. Utter, utter disappointment. And, by the way, I cannot stand waiters who address customers as "Guys".

We have just returned from taking a friend to lunch at the Inn at Lathones. Located 6 miles South East of St Andrews, this 18th century coaching inn offers excellent food, function rooms and 21 bedrooms. We were greeted by Dave who took our jackets and coats and placed us in front of a wonderful wood burning stove. We sat in very comfortable settees and the lintel over the fire was engraved with the date of 1718, the year the Inn was built. Dave returned to take our drinks order and then brought the menus. My wife had a glass of Sauvignon and Dougie chose a Merlot. I chose a low alcohol beer of 0:005% ABV with the delightful name of Hee Haw! We opted for the two course menu for £15, which was just as well, because we were full after the main course! My wife and our guest ordered the sweet potato and rocket soup and I went for the black pudding with a beautifully poached egg, covered in Hollandaise Sauce and strip of perfectly cooked bacon. We all went for the battered haddock, they with salads and me with peas. (I don't do healthy!) I asked for an additional portion of the homemade tartare sauce and the portions were very generous and beautifully cooked and presented.Chris and Colin were in the kitchen doing a great job and I also spoke to Assistant Manager Scott. The Inn has a function room which can cater for 50 and the Dining Room has 30 covers. It is very popular with wedding and funeral parties and I could see why.Everybody was very pleasant, the service, food, drink and ambiance first class and if I were coming the St Andrews area, I would certainly visit the Inn at Lathones!

The Inn at Lathones is a very special place to us. We have stayed here and eaten in the restaurant a number of times over the past three years as our son attends University at St Andrews. There is always a warm welcome after a long journey. The staff are friendly, polite and professional in their manner. This was an old coaching inn and it exudes charm and character from a bygone age. Food is good value, delicious and always served well. It is especially enjoyed by a couple of hungry students who usually accompany us when it's time to eat! It's good to relax by the open fire after a meal and have a drink and a chat. The rooms are warm, comfortable and clean. Last weekend Michael and Brittany were on duty and they were both very helpful and welcoming. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff here and we have consistently found this each time we have stayed. It's always a delight to stay at this charming Inn and we very much look forward to our next visit. Many thanks thanks to Scott and his wonderful team.

This is more than a gastro pub, but it is not as expensive as alternatives elsewhere. It is probably easier to dine here if you are staying at the Inn, as it is 20 mins to most other accommodation nearby. The steaks that we have were cooked perfectly and the sweets were excellent.

Having planned a special event, delayed for one reason or another for six years, my wife and I were renewing our wedding vows.We had a family group of 19 plus two babes in arms for the family gathering. We also had a list of expectations and requests.I am pleased to say they were all met and in all cases surpassed. The small informal service was held in the court with a back up option in case the famous Scottish weather intervened. We were lucky and the sun shone ..... as ordered. This concluded, we retired to the stable, a sympatheticly renovated stable that had been tastefully changed into an atmospheric, pleasant and comfortable environment. The magical moment for me, apart from the renewal service was my wife's face when she saw the table lay out, the place settings and the candles the ambient lighting and music. It was immediately worth it.Despite the quite large numbers attending the meal service was exemplary, the food fresh, hot and in all cases cooked to perfection.Scott, who was our host had pulled out all of the stops and then some.Highly recommended and not just for special occasions, there were also casual diners to contend with.We never noticed, as far as we were concerned we were Scott's only customers.Thank you.

We contacted the Inn at Lathones to book a meal for our family at quite short notice as we had stayed there before and enjoyed the experience very much. They were very busy but made the effort to fit us in anyway. Our group consisted of 5 adults and 3 children, ranging in age from 3 to 61. The staff made a great effort to treat us all well and the children were supplied with balloons, which gave the meal a party atmosphere. Everyone enjoyed their food. The kids menu dishes all went down well and plates were emptied, although the children were tired after a long journey. I had the lamb, which was delicious and my son in law really enjoyed the steak. All the staff who served us were friendly and helpful and I would recommend this place to anyone who is in the area.

There are only a very few places offering a traditional high tea in Fife but The Inn started offering them yesterday and we were the first to book for my wife's 60th. After a relaxing drink in the cosy lounge when orders were taken we were then taken through to the dining room for what can only be described as a feast. A High Tea in Scotland is toast, a main course, followed by scones and cakes with tea and coffee. Done properly this is heaven for those with a sweet tooth and boy was this offering heaven! We had a good choice of delicious mains, lashings of toast with plenty butter(not in stupid little packs) and good jam( in little pots). The selection of home made pastries and cakes were to die for(I just about did cos I ate seven as well as a scone with cream and jam and several slices of toast!) Cream merangues, choux pastries, cloutie dumpling to name but a few. A big pot of tea and coffee were also on the table. And then an invite to take away what we hadn't eaten! We will be back very soon possibly with a dog to enjoy the hospitality in the new, equally cosy, dog friendly room. So keep this a secret so I can get a table and I am away for a cuppa and one of the cakes I brought home.

First visit to this restaurant for dinner during the Christmas season. Cosy bar area and dining room. We were 2 diners in amongst a large Christmas party group, so things were a bit slow and we were forgotten about initially, but the staff were very apologetic. The food was very good and prices were surprisingly cheap- 3 courses for £15! The beef pie main course was a winner! It is in a remote area, but very close to St Andrews (10 minute drive away).

We went here for an evening meal while staying in Crail, knowing nothing about the place but having read some good reviews - from the outside it doesn't look too impressive, so I doubt that we would have chosen to go there otherwise. We were not disappointed - there is plenty of parking, and the lounge where you sit to peruse the menu over a drink is very comfortable. The staff are excellent, the dining room is beautifully laid out and decorated, and - most importantly of all - the food is superb, by a long way the best that we had during our holiday and extremely good value for money. Everything was good, but the blue cheese mousse was a particular delight. Overall, first class.

A bit of the beaten track but worth it. If this café was in the city centre, it would be packed out every day! We didn't stay but went for lunch one Sunday. We booked but several groups turned up without booking and were able to get a table. The menu is the usual pub grub but nicely presented and service was quick. Ae chose the roast beef, meatball and curry with icecream and coffee to follow. All very tasty The welcome and service were frienly and efficient and the dining room light airy and spacious.

What a disappointment. I found the Bothy at Boglily on TA, loved the look of the place, the gorgeous photos of cooked food on their site and the good reviews. We are doing a road trip and this was going to be our Sunday morning treat. The car park was jammed with cars and we saw people standing in a queue to pet baby goats. Upon entering the inviting Bothy and asking a young man for a table, we were told that we couldn’t bring our dog in. Fair enough. Not every dining establishment is dog-friendly. Though I was a bit surprised as the restaurant is in a buffalo farm, there’s a petting zoo and it’s in the countryside. The sun was shining so I asked if we could order our meal and sit at the table on the deck, directly next to the door of The Bothy (see photo for proximity). The young man’s response was that they don’t offer takeaway. I queried whether a table one step from the door qualified as takeaway. It reminded me of the TV ad with the man trying to buy potatoes at a farm shop and being told that he can only pay with digital currency. People taking themselves so seriously that they don’t think of the customer experience. We had driven up from our holiday cottage at Kinghorn especially to get a nice cooked breakfast from their lovely menu, so my surprise and disappointment were apparent. I was directed to the outdoor kiosk they call the Milk Bar to order something from their limited selection. We ordered one Double Cheese Toastie with fries, a latte, an affogato milkshake ( made with buffalo milk ice cream) and a scone, which was on their menu. The two lovely servers told me that they don’t sell scones outside and I would have to go to the Bothy Café to get one. When I explained that I had been told up there that I couldn’t get anything from them takeaway, the young woman offered to go get one for me. They were both very sweet and I apologised for my previous grumpiness. Unfortunately, it wasn’t worth the trouble. The cheese toastie and fries were served in a cardboard tray. The toastie was on “cheap white bread” according to my partner. I didn’t taste it. The fries and the milkshake however, were excellent. My scone was dry, cold and crumbled into breadcrumb texture when I tried to spread some butter on it. The crumb was impossible to pick up and eat but my dog liked it. It wasn’t worth eating for me as it then began to rain and we had to head for the car. I can’t help but think that the very cheerful, welcoming and upmarket website promises more than it delivers.
