The India Palm in Dumfries & Galloway

Went for dinner on a Saturday In January, place seemed disorganised and short staffed lots of uncleared tables which resulted in a wait to get seated Food was decent nothing special typical Indian offering , tasty enough but not anything out of the ordinary. What stood our was 2 things, the impersonal service that had a production line feeling to it and tired décor and furnishings - in particular a filthy carpet! As soon as our starter was finished and we placed our cutlery down within 10 seconds the plates where whisked away and within 15 seconds our main course arrived, hardly had time to gather ourselves. In addition this place was refurbished 15+ years ago, as a local I recall it, and its hasn't been touched since, the carpet is filthy- very off putting when you're eating there - overdue for a refresh and a refit!

Where to start. Came down to Dumfries for QoS v st.mirren match. Quite a few saints fans in here on Saturday night. Booked a table for 8 pm guy couldn't find booking. Eventually got seated about 15 minutes later . Ordered the usual poppadoms and stuff, was nice. Then it was down hill all the way. Partner got chicken tikka sizzler, was very dry , also came with the wrong curry sauce. Mine was lamb with spinach (pardesi) off the medium curry range and it was cold in the middle. Naan bread was the worst I've ever tasted in an Indian restaurant. Then the waiter dropped a dish of sweet chilli sauce over my jeans and trainers. We were there for over 2 hours and the phone never stopped once, oh and nobody answered. Waiting for an hour and a half between courses is ridiculous. The table behind us was where all the take away orders were placed. Not one was delivered while we were there. No wonder the phone was in meltdown. It was starting to get on everybody's nerves. Shame for the people of this brilliant town that the worst Indian restaurant in paisley is better than your best one . I'm giving you one star as I'm not allowed to give minus one.

Was here on Saturday evening , walked by earlier in the day and the place looked nice so decided to visit later . Put our order in and the starters arrived in reasonable time and were excellent, but we had to wait over an hour from when our starters were served to when we received our main course , and during this time the phone was ringing almost non stop for takeaway orders ( staff were ignoring calls ) . When the mains came they were bang average . Im sure the Jalfrezi and the garlic chilli dishes were the same . So in a nutshell , Service was poor , ambience was ruined with non stop phone ringing out mains pretty basic . Chicken pakora was okay . The poppadoms and chutney etc were excellent , hence the two stars .

Service bad. untrained waiters not paying attention to tables. As soon as glass is empty it should be noticed and attented to.Instead had to catch eye of waiter to request more drinks for party

The food was ok staff were pleasant . We were over charged for the third time. We were charged for 5 pints of Cobra instead of half pints and we were charged £5 too much for our rice . And like the other times they apologised and knocked £15 off. . It is just so annoying as it has to be on purpose when it has happened this many times as I know we can all make mistakes. Really disappointed in them.

Decided to have a curry, was here many years ago, my brother & l ordered two different dishes, one lamb & one vegetarian, food was served within 4 minutes which astounded us, both curries looked as if they had the same sauce. We also orders 2 chappati & 1 garlic & cheese naan which was basically a pizza base with lots of sprinkled cheese on top, staff were lovely & efficient but won’t be in a rush to return next time we’re in Dumfries.

As my friend has had a couple of lousy days I decided to visit and while there decide a meal would be in order. Ordinarily we’d have got a delivery but I decided we both needed a proper sit down meal and picked on The India Palms as I knew it was open. I’d entirely forgotten about their Sunday buffet. We were offered the regular menu but buffet was the choice. The choice of starters isn’t huge but there was hot, fresh and really excellent chicken pakora and there was also poppadoms and bowls of sauces/spiced onions/salad stuff etc. enough to get the appetite going. For mains, again, not a huge variety, six dishes but they were sorted into hot, medium and mild and all clearly different not just the usual base sauce with different seasoning. My friend went mild and I went hot. Thankfully not madly hot but enough to wake the mouth up. Again, all fresh and hot and very tasty. I didn’t try everything as, sadly, I no longer have the capacity I once did. However what I had and my friend had was all delicious. Had I remembered it was a buffet I might have tried to go hungrier I know I will the next time. There was a strawberry gateaux with fresh cream for dessert which we both decided against although it looked grand. The bill for the two of us with two cokes was £35.80 which I reckon is more than reasonable as I’ve paid half as much again more for a single meal regularly in Newcastle. The staff were as attentive as necessary and all very pleasant. I have no doubt I’ll be back again soon and I have no hesitation in recommending it.

Disappointed with my starter and main course, onion Baji was like a flat fish cake and not great flavours, ordered mixed grill, One small prawn, half a shish and loaded up with chicken, not exactly mixed, at £18.99 was expecting better, been here a few times but definitley starting to go downhill, staff were pleasant and profesional but the food has went downhill.

Fantastic Indian cuisine good service not rushed to eat

We went for the Sunday buffet. Seated quickly and asked re drinks. We ordered 1 each. Not guided as to how to proceed with the buffet but followed the other customer example. Plentiful supply of starter and 9 different curry's to choose from with plain nan slices and 3 different rice to accompany. We had the last of the light sponge rasbery cake for pudding. Only issue was when we came to pay. We calculated our total according to the menus but when presented with the total they had charged for an extra drink. They hadn't returned to the table since we arrived thus hadn't ordered any additional drinks. We didn't bother to say as we had already decided the amount we were going to pay with a tip so ended up their loss. We shall be returning though as we all enjoyed the buffet and judging by how busy it were, we think it's certainly popular with the locals.

With a group of friends for a mid week break in Dumfries. We always have a curry night when away and India Palm was the best yet. We had a full range of starters and mains. All were excellent and diverse in flavour. Particular praise comes from me for the spicy Fish Masala Fillet, the Tender Lamb Lahori and the Sag Aloo.

Great food, party of 12 on golfing trip, excellent service and reasonably priced Tasty. 👍

Went here for dinner; was a bit wary due to some previous feedbacks but was pleasantly surprised. Staff were friendly and attentive, food was good, hot and tasty. Chicken pakora starter was slightly disappointing due to lack of spice - more like chicken nuggets, but tasty for all that - perhaps just different to what we're used to at our local. Both mains were hot and delicious and particularly the south Indian garlic chilli chicken. Toilets were clean. Yes, the carpet was sticky, but we didn't eat our dinner off it!

We had one night in Dumfries and went here. We are all vegan and they looked after us. Food was excellent. Price was OK. Recommended.

Absolutely the worst Indian restaurant I've ever been to. The booth we were being seated in had crumbs all over it, the waiter just brushed them off with the menu. The carpets were filthy (see pictures), the waiters are completely miserable and the food is beyond terrible. The starters - not even fresh out of a microwave are the same you'd find from a microwaveable Indian starter selection from a cheap supermarket. The mains, where to start? I ordered chicken tikka balti, it was just chicken tikka pieces thrown in a luminous sauce with zero heat and just no real flavour and very clearly just warmed up in the bowl it had sat in for over a day. The garlic cheese naan, out of a packet and chucked in the over with some mozzarella sprinkled on top (see photo). Taken off the bill luckily but just demonstrates the lack of effort. Shocking

First time dining here. I must say it's fantastic. Friendly staff, wonderful food choice and lovely decor. The seating inside is rather. The meal was delicious. Ordered the hottest dish and it did not disappoint. The flavour was incredible without the chilli overpowering meal. Tasty dessert!

Lovely meal.visited on Wednesday night with another couple. Beautiful meal. Good service ,great value. Lovely flavours. Would highly recommend the restaurant. All 4 of us had clean plates

Terrific restaurant and service. Food fresh and tasty. I ate the best tadka dhal I've ever eaten. The cheese and garlic naan was a treat too. The staff handily phoned us a taxi for afterwards too.

The food was ok, but not amazing, the portions weren’t very large and we felt underwhelmed given how pricey it was.

Got a home delivery, food came fast and hot. The bad thing is the delivery driver tried to opened our front door, when asked to why he kicked off, when we closed the door he then decided to shout vulgar insults

Food is good but the delivery driver tried my front door and when confronted about it got verbally abusive and called me a nasty name he then continued to get right in my face almost like he was going to throw a punch.

Nice restaurant, good food, promp service. We were seated towards the back and I was worried we'd be hidden from view of the waiters and get forgotten but they were spot on with everything. The drinks arrived promptly. The poppadoms were fresh and the condiment tray was tasty and had different things on than I've usually had. The mains was very tasty and we had vegetable rice which I really enjoyed. Next time I'm in Dumfries I will be back

Just had my first takeaway frome here and it's one of the best I've had in a long time. Will definitely be back for more.

Absolutely superb food. Wife had a madras,she said it was the best she had ever had. I had a lamb dish,very nice too. The poppadom savoury selection accompaniments were better than your bog standards. Different flavours than the usual chutney and onions etc. Highly recommend this place.

Very delicious food, great choice, great service. Can be noisy if there's a big group in - but this is not the restaurants fault. Definitely recommend.

My partner and I love curry. We eat curry regularly, both at home and in restaurants. We often travel upwards of 2 hours to try recommended curry houses. Tonight, we thought we would try one closer to home. And we have both agreed that this is the absolute worst that either of us have ever been to… It started off fairly promising. The place is warm, and we were seated quickly in a booth. There were some questionable stains on the table cloth, but we overlooked this, and our drinks order was quickly taken, followed by our food order. Unfortunately the carpet had more personality that all of the waitstaff combined. Literally. My feet stuck to whatever was growing in it. The started was a selection of deep fried chicken and veg. It was fine. Basic, but fine. Then arrived the main course. My partner had ordered the Karahi from the “hot” section and I had gone for the Pardesi from the “medium” menu. Neither had any heat whatsoever, or any flavour. Had they not been different colours, you could have been forgiven for assuming they were identical. The nan bread was like a thick duvet, and my cheese and garlic nan had was literally nan bread with half a bag of grated mozzarella on top! When the waiter asked how things were, he scuttled off before waiting for an answer. Despite all of this, we could have got over this, had there not been the attempted theft, the addition of a significant amount onto each item on the bill. When this was flagged up, the excuse was “well I haven’t got a menu to hand”. Hello Trading Standards - needless to add, when a menu was presented, the price was very incorrect, and the additional sum removed. If dreadful food, staff who clearly don’t want to be there, and attempted theft are your thing, then sure, give it a bash….

Well, APPALLING. I need to start by saying that they’re defrauding their customers! Tonight they added a substantial amount to each menu item on my bill! When challenged got short and flustered then claimed he couldn’t find a menu for me to check! That’s on top of tasteless poor food and staff that have less personality than the sticky purple carpet! I shall be reporting them to anyone and everyone for their behaviour! They’re clearly doing it to as many as possible.

Got starter and main meal which were tasteless , coconut rice and chilli rice were both poor in taste also. Ordered 2 coffee's which came out a catering size box of nescafe and again poor quality of coffee, been twice to this establishment on a row and both times left dissatisfied, we won't be back.

Ordered 2 Tawa dishes which were bland and flavourless, the coconut rice and hot spicy rice also were poor in quality, ordered 2 coffees which we didn't think could go wrong as a large coffee machine was behind the bar , however watched as bar man pulled out catering size box of Nescafe and used the machine for hot water. Disappointed the time we went before that also and now won't be back

First visit. Food, service and atmosphere all perfect. Extensive menu to suit all tastes. Will return.

Hands down the best dining experience I’ve had in the local area. Great atmosphere, exceptional staff, great choice on the menu, good value, tasty meals. Compared to the rest of the overpriced slop that the other restaurants serve in Dumfries and Galloway this really is the best dinner you can have. A truly amazing hidden gem that locals and tourists should take advantage of. A 10/10 experience had by all!

Dec '23 update. Still great, still no lime pickle! Great restaurant with great service and good food. Only thing I'd say is they need some lime pickle with the papadums.

The best Indian meal I've ever had on a restaurant in UK. Travel all over the country due to my job and I thought I had my favourites but this restaurant it's definitely the best. Amazing flavours all around.

Come to Dumfries every year at this time and have always had a great experience eating here . Tonight was terrible . We had a table booked for 530 . Got starter no problem waited an hour and a half for main course . The manager was so rude to customers as it was busy . He was running about shouting at staff and customers . The service was diabolical . Won't go back next year .

Great place to get delicious Indian food in Dumfries. Tried their garlic naan which was the best, also liked the peshwari naan ( sweet ), the traditional chicken curries, India palm special Biryani was also good . Will definitely come back to this place.

4 of us decided to eat out in this lovely, well set out restaurant. It was very comfortable with ample space between tables to enjoy the fayre on offer. Our starters were varied, from chicken tikka ( delicious and succulent ), prawn puree ( ok but not brilliant ) and a bhagee ( Good ). Mains were better than the starters, mostly very tasty and fresh, well spiced to add to the wholesome flavours accompanied by delicious fresh naan and well prepared pilau rices of varying types. All good. The drinks were sensibly priced also making it quite a nice evening all round. so, all in all I think if you try it you will enjoy your meal and time here.

Would never eat in again. Portions are tiny compared to takeaway portions yet double the price almost. Attended with a group of friends and everyone had 1 drink and a one main meal and shared a starter bill came to over £400 rip off.

Visiting the area and went in for the Sunday buffet . Food was good but the only choice in curry was they were all Tikka and its the one curry I don't like . So it was a disappointing experience for me.

I loved going to this place. But now after visiting a couple of days ago. I'm hugely disappointed at the very small portions being served. (I know there's a cost of living crisis) but my daughter and I left feeling hungry. When our food arrived at our table we looked at each other with amazement at such a mega small portion size we received. Defo won't be back again. It's a bloody shame.we only had a starter main and a drink.for the amount money I paid for the 2 of us. Defo not value for money

This is an eatery we use frequently therefore know their food. On arrival at the restaurant at 4.10pm there was no one there. We asked if they were open, told yes. Ordered from a la carte menu. My husband ordered tandoori chicken on the bone with dhal and rice. I ordered Bombay potato main and peshwari naan. It arrived VERY quickly. Can’t imagine it was cooked fresh. However. The tandoori chicken griddle was not sizzling and had a layer of raw red stained onions which were not charred on the underside. The chicken was 2 small red pieces, with no real sign of the tandoor. The chicken tasted of raw spices, no tandoori flavour and generally not good. I believe it may have been microwaved. My Bombay potato was undercooked and hard with an uninspiring covering. The naan was totally flat with a layer of filling, again little sign of the cooking. On complaining, I stated I would not be paying for my meal, this was accepted with little apology for what was served. We will not be returning and would advise others to be wary.

Amazing restaurant. Although a little quiet it soon filled up. As we left about 8 the customers were still coming in... Had a couple of curries which were delivered hot and promptly.. Son Andrew had a korma and I had a medium one dish. All in all a very nice meal and reasonably priced...

Surprised how big this place was went in on a Tuesday about 5 only ppl in ordered tandoori chicken tikka masala pershwari plus normal nan and a chicken korma and a portion of chips and 2 pilau rices food came quite quick it was amazing chicken was tender melt in Ur mouth would defo go back next time am Doon

Visited 24th June 2023. The food was pretty good, we all enjoyed our meals. Atmosphere was fine, bit of a buzz but not too rowdy for a Saturday night. I've taken a couple of stars off because of the weirdness with the drinks. I'd asked for half an Aspalls cider. My brother and husband both had 2 pints of beer. I was told I couldn't have a half, they would only let me have a pint! Very odd, especially when the price for a half was listed on the drinks menu. I caved in and had a pint, my choice I know I could have asked for tap water instead, but I found this strange and quite irresponsible, what if someone was driving and only wanted a half for that reason? Never been anywhere before where you're not allowed a half pint?!

Sunday Buffet, busy, attentive service. Good selection of food. Drinks not too badly priced. A great evening with friends, good food and a pleasant setting. Recommended. Particularly the Sunday buffet if you or your kids want to try new dishes.

Been here a few times and the food is excellent. Staff are extremely helpful and patient. The drinks menu is extensive unless it’s cider but all in all it’s an amazing place to go.

Food was good however the service was slow and the staff reacted poorly when we didn't want any more drinks. They then tried to get us out the door as fast as they could whilst still finishing our meal. Overall the food was good but it was overshadowed by the poor attitude of the staff.

Food was not great, just wasted our money today. Too much oil and couldn’t find a good piece of chicken from curry. Ordered egg rice and naan along with daal and chicken curry. All items are disappointing. Not authentic Indian taste felt. Not worth the price at all

Came for the buffet. It was so good. You can choose from 3 mild curries, 3 medium and 3 hot, then you have a big variety of different rices, naan, poppadoms, chicken and mixed pakora. All for £14.99. Can't complain at all. And if you're vegetarian (which I'm not) they will make you fresh curry so you don't miss out

Buffet at 14.95 was reasonably priced, but not worth even that amount. All chicken dishes; no vegetarian, no dal, no lamb, no fish, no prawns. Mediocre flavor. Fried foods were covered on steam table, which made them soggy, not crispy. One dessert.

Gute Indische Küche. Das Tikka Masalla kann ich aber eher nicht empfehlen weil es zu süß gewürzt ist. Das Essen wird schnell serviert. Das Restaurant ist Samstags immer sehr voll.

The food was excellent as was the service, my husband asked for a half of lager but was brought a pint but that was the only mistake in the order, the food was delicious and we would certainly recommend this restaurant xx

We had a very good meal here although portions were quite modest. I would definitely recommend the food. What was very disappointing however was being shamelessly overcharged by nearly £10.I would urge customers to check the bill against the menu especially if paying by card.

Despite booking table in advance, they were more interested in seating and serving walk in's. Food was excellent but service was of the poorest standard, took them over an hour between the starter and to serve the main meal.

We had a lovely meal out at this restaurant on a Saturday evening. We arrived quite early (approx 17:45) and lucky too, as this restaurant gets busy! Reservations recommended. The food was really good and good portions. It was nice to see authentic Indian dishes other than the usual on the menu. It all tasted great! The team are friendly and work hard to ensure service and to find a table for everyone. It was our first visit and we will go back again.

Don't order from restaurant throughJustEat. We received a carrier bag of sludge. Either the restaurant sent it that way and/or driver destroyed it en route. Either way they ruined my daughters birthday!

Sunday buffet is always a winner. Good selection of different meals. Nothing very spicy mind, I think they've got a fear of the spice round here.
