Great find in Castle Douglas. It's always a lucky dip eating out when you don't know the area very well. The Jewel certainly didn't disappoint. All the guys paid great attention to us, and we wanted for nothing. Rafi was the star 🌟

This Indian is in my home town, only a 30 second drive yet they charge £3.50 for delivery, absolutely ridiculous. There is defiantly no friendly customer for buying from them, i see the point maybe charging £1.50 but £3.50 is just over the top

One of few Indian restaurants in South Dumfries and Galloway but sets a high standard. Not the quickest (Waited 40 mins on a weekday for takeout) but evident care taken over the food. Delicious and extensive menu.

Ordered a chicken chat on Puri bread, chicken tikka madras, plain naan and spicy honey chips. The puri was delicious sweet and spicy The madras was lovely also good amount of heat and chicken cooked to perfection The naan was large and soft. Mopped up the madras well. The chips- I won’t lie not a fan, didn’t really finish them but that’s personal preference and not a knock at the restaurant as I’m sure people do like them as they would not sell them Otherwise. Overall a good takeaway

A nice restaurant in a nice town! The meal was good, Naan was very tasty, service was very friendly! The ambiente is modern, but could be a little bit more cosy ... but the one reason for only two stars here is: It was too cold in that one, big room of the restaurant. We should come back in summer ...

Thank you for a very special Christmas meal! It was absolutely stunning and cooked to perfection. Really delicious and tender meat. The tikka masala was simply stunning, my family tried the lamb and a Bengali roast chicken. We all loved it! The baked cheesecake was also superb! We knew that coming here we’d be really well looked after with the kindest of people owning this restaurant. We were so grateful for the extra attention we received taking us through each dish. This was really an exceptional Christmas meal we will never forget. If we still live here next year we would hope to be back for Christmas. Thank you so much for such a special time! 👏🙏🎉

Went to this restaurant to get a takeaway, we have had meals from here before when we holidayed in Kirkcudbright. We went in and ordered our takeaway and were told the chef hadn't arrived yet and it would be about an hour. We were going to cancel but the young man then said it would be 30 mins. We went for a walk and returned for our meal and left. When we opened the dishes at our cottage it was cold and dry and looked nothing like the usual curries, even putting it in the microwave didn't help. The garlic naan was just a plain naan and like cardboard. Once bitten twice shy so we will be looking elsewhere for our holiday curry in future.

Used to go regularly when we lived in Auchencairn and loved it. Back in the area on ho;iday so revisited only to be disappointed by very average food. Surprised to find that the restaurant didn't have a licence and had to go out to Tesco's to get some beers. Had to wait about 40 minutes for our food which was annoying as there were only about 4 tables occupied; a total of about18 people. Would not go back.

Especially delighted with the service. Our daughter is autistic and struggles with noise. Mid way through our meal the table of 7 adjacent became so loud (think braying donkeys) we couldn’t hear ourselves and even with ear defenders my daughter was struggling. My family and I had lovely time at The Jewel In The Crown. It's BYOB, you're being advised of it whilst making a booking and waiters happily offer a glass for your beverage on arrival. Selection of the food was really impressive, both meat and vegetarian options. We went for recommendations (sorry, can't really remember names of the dishes) from one of the waiters who was super helpful and accommodating, and we were not disappointed. Portions were big and very satisfying. Service all together was great, very attentive and accommodating. In general, it's a perfect spot for a family meal as well as visit with your friends. Beyond awful! The vegetable pakora was tasteless and didn’t hold together - it was nothing more than shredded deep fried pieces of batter. Reminded me of what you might find if you emptied out the remnants of your deep fat frier. The disappointment continued when we realised we’d only been given half a curry! A long foil dish that was less than half filled (no exaggeration!). I can only assume the chef got hungry half way through cooking it? My recommendation to the chef would be to try one of the Asda’s savers curries instead as it has miles more taste and at least you can be assured a full portion. The spiced onions come in a small tub a similar size to a McDonald’s ketchup sauce. To be fair, they were only 95p, but I’ve never received spiced onions as a ‘dip’ before! The one plus I would say is the customer service, the person on the phone was very courteous and eager to help. If they could back this up with the food they produced they’d be onto a winner. We’re not the type to leave reviews but this was genuinely awful and we’ve been left hungry and out of pocket. Maybe we caught them on a bad night, but I’d recommend giving this a miss.

We had a delivery from here and it was not great. 2 of the 3 main courses were average, with the sauce for one being runny, insipid and glowing yellow, the other being too spicy after being advertised as not. The third main was a glowing red, tasty, but glowing. The move away from artificial colouring has not reached this premises. The side dishes were fine and the delivery in good time. The naans were huge. The papadums and chutney trays were fine. Perhaps we caught them on an off day.

Very friendly and attentive staff especially the owner. The popadom and chutney tray pre-starter was excellent particularly the tamarind sauce. We asked if we could buy some of the tamarind sauce, they gave us two small tubs without charge. Our main courses were chicken Luari and prawn Rogan Josh with Pilau rice, both were large portions and delicious. We had no room for a desert. The cost was a very reasonable £17 pp with no service charge. We left a very well deserved tip. The Jewel In The Crown does not have an alcohol licence but customers are able to BYO. Glasses are provided and their is non corkage charge. There is a good range of non-alcoholic drinks. We live 100 miles from Castle Douglas so unfortunately will not be able to return to The Jewel In The Crown often. We will be back whenever we are in the area. The owner did tell us about an ex-employee who now has the Thai Valley restaurant in Selkirk. This is only 20 miles from home so we will be visiting soon, hoping it is as good as The Jewel In The Crown.

A party of 6 of booked this restaurant a good 2 weeks earlier, knowing it could be difficult to get somewhere to eat on a Saturday night. We enter at our agreed time, we were ushered to our table, then we waited, and waited and waited. Then a waiter came and asked us if we required drinks, he also took our order (Poppadoms, 2 each, meal to follow). Then we waited and waited and waited, eventually, the starter arrived. Starter done, lets move on to the main meal. You know the scene by know, we waited and waited and waited, and believe it or not, we waited some more. We had been in the building for 1 hour and 25 mins and had our first course, nothing more. As all the take aways were going out, we did contemplate phoning for a take away and asking for it to be delivered to table number #, I am sure it would have been quicker. Loads of people who came in after us, were served before us and some had left the building. Eventually, the meal came. Hurrah, was it worth the wait? No not really, our party of 6 are fortunate to be pretty well travelled and have visited umpteen establishments like this one. But never have we waited this long for what turned out to be a meal of less than average quality. I saw a lot of reviews for this place and thought we would be getting a good night, how wrong could I have been. The owners will probably say, "we were very busy", "the staff were run off their feet". Sorry guys, that isn't my issue. The remedy is, employ more staff, throughout and make sure your "in house" customers are the most important people in your business, because if they "walk", your business will be ruined in no time.

This place is renowned for leaving things out of orders so I distinctly repeated that I wanted 3 nan breads What we received was shocking......for £24.00 we got what looked like 2 kids meals, really small portions, 2 plain nan breads and a miniscule pilau rice. I had high hopes for this place and convenient to my home being a 10 minute drive away I placed an order online at 6.20pm and took the 7.00pm option for collection. I arrived at 7 and was told it could be 5 or 10 mins, which was fine as the place didn’t look particularly busy but staff seemed under pressure. I returned 15 mins later and waited another 5 mins before being presented with my meals. I thought it was better to have freshly cooked than sitting for 10 mins .. on arrival at home 10 mins later and unveiling the food provided .. I can only describe my mood as disappointed. Chicken tikka tandoori … swimming in grease chicken chasing that I could only describe as 8 pieces of minute chicken cooked in tomato soup .. you couldn’t even see the chicken in the tray without fishing around in the “sauce” for it . Not worth the money and throws doubt on the 5 star reviews posted .. if you want a decent curry the 20 mile drive to Dumfries from here more than makes up for the disappointment. If the food was worth the wait it would have been fine but this certainly wasn’t. A kebab shop would provide better quality food than this restaurant and would be a fraction of the cost

Went for dinner on a Saturday In January, place seemed disorganised and short staffed lots of uncleared tables which resulted in a wait to get seated Food was decent nothing special typical Indian offering , tasty enough but not anything out of the ordinary. What stood our was 2 things, the impersonal service that had a production line feeling to it and tired décor and furnishings - in particular a filthy carpet! As soon as our starter was finished and we placed our cutlery down within 10 seconds the plates where whisked away and within 15 seconds our main course arrived, hardly had time to gather ourselves. In addition this place was refurbished 15+ years ago, as a local I recall it, and its hasn't been touched since, the carpet is filthy- very off putting when you're eating there - overdue for a refresh and a refit!

The worst Indian takeaway we have ever had , ended up in the bin £53.00 later , rate it at a 1 out of 10 , same meal anywhere it would be £36 ish would not recommend it . If it wasn't for the wife I would have back and give them a mouthful.

Having heard that the restaurant was taken over sometime last year, I went to try it out and it was absolutely lovely. Food hot and plentiful, and so tasty. The staff were friendly, too. Restaurant could be doing with upgrading, but won’t put me off going back! Looking forward to our next visit.
