Peaceful, friendly, quirky with a good selection of drinks and homemade cakes. Can recommend mocha with chilli and the ice cream milk shakes!

I drove past here, seeing the dark brown exterior paneling and I thought, a hipster coffee place, in I go. No, it wasn't - it was a cross between an old-persons Victorian tea shop/home and Cheers (the eighties American soap). At this point, you think, what a combination, this is not somewhere I would want to go. Well, if you are a hipster then no. Why? Because you get a large cup of coffee, and it is the FAT ROC Organic Blend by Voyager in Buckfastleigh. This is a very good arabica coffee and it is not cheap to buy - because I buy the same for my cafe. Voyager do have cheaper roasts which are not as subtle as Fat Roc, so kudos to these guys for using such a good coffee. Now, I will say, this reminded me of a cafe on the outskirts of London where the locals would go, where there would be good chitter chatter, and where the owners were very present and involved in the conversation. Which I found very warming and comfortable, and it was nice to sit on my jack jones, minding my business, listening to the local speak. So, if you are looking for a place to feel 'cool', not here. If you are looking for a place where you can feel involved, without even integrating and enjoying a damn good coffee, which was also very well made....then do pop in here....

Very nice little coffee shop with plenty of seating at the front or in the little back room where there is also a sofa . The cakes were beautiful and coffee good . And proper China and pretty too. My only criticism is I tripped on their laptop wire as it was stalked across the floor going from one table to the other . Luckily I didn’t hurt myself but the stairs were not far away so could definatly be a hazard . But we will return as nice service.

Can't say enough good things about this brilliant cafe. The coffee was spot on, cakes so yummy and the staff were so attentive. Such a lovely place to relax and unwind. We took in our 3 month old puppy and she was spoilt rotten by the staff. Thank you for a lovely morning ♥️ If you are in Tiverton you must call in.

Flat white tasteless like warm milk and water.Do youself a favour and go to crediton URMV Motor cycles. They use real coffee and riverford organic milk. Not that skimed stuff that leaves a tang in your mouth. What an opportunity lost for tiverton.

Wide range of drinks, lots of vegan options (oat, coconut, soya) and friendly staff. Enjoyed a V60 pour over at a low price and there were many fresh cakes to choose from (including a vegan brownie).

The friendly and efficient staff make the best coffee in town. At the back of this excellent establishment is a large room, which enables accommodation of a larger group of customers.So bring your friends ! The ambiance is fantastic, and the display of cakes are guaranteed to titilate your taste buds. And, if you're lucky, you'll meet a cute little canine called "Poppy", another regular at the best coffee shop in town. Keep up the good work, folks !

Only the second time that I have visited but will not be the last visit. The coffee is really good, though I admit that I'm not an aficionado. It had pleasant staff and has a relaxing feel to it. It really is worth visiting.

Called in on Saturday morningand we had excellent tea and coffee, and superb ginger cake. A nice little cafe with welcoming and friendly staff. Hope the waitress's jet lag wasn't too bad !

Went in went in to the coffee shop with wive for a coffee, the coffee so ok why we were sat some people came in with a dog the lady behind the counter stoked the dog and god cups down to fill with out washing her hands , not been back since

This was our first visit to this lovely little place and we were very impressed. Wonderful coffee of which there is a good choice, the opportunity for that extra shot and also a variety of milks, including oat for those who may be dairy intolerant. The cakes are delicious and home made (I recommend the coffee & walnut and the Bakewell slice...hmmmm 😜) and there are also several gluten free cakes too. Very friendly owners and staff, and it was very busy - always a good sign! It has level access, the only down side for those with limited mobility is that the toilet is down some very steep, narrow stairs. But that aside, it was a delightful experience having our morning coffee at this charming place.

standards have slipped considerably under this former stalwart of great taste, in all senses of that word. The actual coffee is still great, of course - no one could gain say that - but the ambience has changed beyond recognition... all hard shiny chairs n tables n few punters, unsurprisingly. Worst of all, stale cake - the worst sin of all..yuk. Shall not be returning in the forseeable unless this bastion returns to its former self. Trying too hard n not succeeding, unfortunately for their clientele..

Al estar cansados con Costa Coffee en la ciudad, decidí ir a este lugar. Desde el momento en que entramos por la puerta que no me decepcionó. Las opciones son bastante pequeñas, pero los locales no son o grand, así se ajusta, de verdad. El personal es super amable, el interior es auténtico, y sus tartas caseras son deliciosa, por no mencionar las sopas son fantásticas.

The Independent Coffee Trader has a lovely variety of coffees. I especially enjoy the pasties because they are filling and packed with good steak and turnip.

Here you will find all you want in a coffee shop. Excellent coffee , lovely china , very good home made cakes. Newspapers and local interest papers. Lovely staff. Homely. We are lucky to have this in Tiverton.

Called in here on a Saturday afternonn, during a recent trip to Tiverton. Lovely coffee, lovely cake. Added advantage of being open when the rest of Tiverton had closed. :)

Travelling back from North Devon and visited this coffee shop in Tiverton. Coffee is excellent and the two girls behind the coffee bar work really hard and do a good job, even if we waited for about 15 mins for our coffee. So far so good, but then another lady, who we assumed was the manager or proprietor, came into the shop from outside and began serving some of the prepared coffees etc. When it came to our turn, we saw her wipe one of our knives for our toasted teacake on her pullover. We used the other knife! Such a shame to spoil a great place with carelessness on such a simple thing.

I'm not a coffee drinker, but they do some good teas and a nice selection of homemade cakes, make this a regular stop on the way home.

Delicious coffee! I had a lovely soya latte, my son a chocolate milkshake & my husband said his coffee frappé was the best he's had. I notice a few people have mentioned they've had to wait for the coffees longer than they'd like, but it is made fresh per cup, so we'll worth it for the fresh quality & "proper coffee" taste.We will definitely be back, plus we must try the authentic Belgian hot chocolate!

I tend to seek out independent coffee shops wherever I'm visiting and this ones a little gem, great cakes, scrummy cheese scones and very good coffee, highly recommend a visit.

It looked very busy when we arrived but we were directed to a room at the back that had plenty of room. The cakes were really good but the coffee seemed to take forever to make.Loved the crockery - hand painted in Poland, but tea pots needed a shield from the heat! Wanted the loo but didn't fancy the basement with the kitchen.

This used to be a unique place, which was well supported. Sadly, under the new owners it's a shadow of its former self. Staff are sullen and a bit scruffy and ever-present, listening to our conversation.

This is a good independent cafe in Tiverton with lovely fresh cakes and snacks. When we arrived it was busy but the person at the counter did not even look up to greet us. We had to wait for acknowledgement and clear our own table. The coffee was good with very nice cups and plates. Worth a visit over the chains but be prepared to wait at busy times.

So much nicer than the chains. Friendly and warm welcome and it was obvious that many of the customers were regulars. Well worth a visit

The Independent Coffee Trader is a bit like Cheers — if you're there regularly, everyone knows your name. This little joint is compact at the front, although the back room has very comfortable sofas, and has a range of great cakes and snacks — some of which were made in house. It regularly has gluten- and dairy-free items to boot, and they're almost indistinguishable from their wheat alternatives, which is a refreshing change. The coffee is great and much better than the place that claims to have Tiverton's best coffee a few doors down. The cafe allows dogs in (like my little one), provided they're reasonably well behaved, and it'll even provide water for them upon request. The cafe is one of the best in Tiverton, and I hope it's around for a long time.

Some recent reviews lowered my expectations before visiting for the first time, but I was very impressed. Ultra friendly welcome, a fine cup of coffee (and I am fussy about my coffee!) and a lovely sunny room with comfy sofas and chairs made for an excellent visit. Very nice toasted teacake with the offer of more butter if required was a nice touch. I would definitely return here when in Tiverton.

We've been using this lovely place since we moved to the Tiverton area just over two years ago, new management took over a few months ago and I'm delighted to say that they have continued the excellent coffee, tea and hot choc with friendly service. You should note that there is an additional seating area at the back of shop which has more comfy chairs. A very popular drop in for both locals and visitors, I'm very pleased that a local coffee shop is here and not the inevitable few big chains.

This used to be the best coffee house in town. But since the new owners have had it there is no nice atmosphere like there used to be. The cheese scones are horrid and the cakes not nice.

This is a very friendly coffee shop with a good range of drinks. They also have cakes and tea cakes and best of all for me there is a choice of gluten free cakes. I would highly recommend it

this place was open earlier in th year but then closed for a short while for a change of owner. what a great place to go now for a coffee and a chat in the town . fab atmposphere go on and try it .

I would not return as one member of staff spoke the whole time to a customer in a loud voice about the refugee crisis in a racist manner. This I found shocking and the other member of staff looked uncomfortable. Coffee was very good but it would not be good enough to make me return.

Stopped for a lovely cuppa this morning. Friendly staff and great coffee and treats! Can definitely recommend the shortbread!

The best way I can describe the independent coffee trader is it is like a comfortable pair of slippers after a hard day shopping, coffee is excellent and what you expect from an independent, lots of different cakes including dairy and gluten free, staff are welcoming and polite, you must try one of their real hot chocolate it is one of the best I've tried, no wonder this is number one I can see why. Five stars all round

Visited when passing through Tiverton last week. This place is superb - great selection of beverages including excellent choice of coffees and snacks - probably the best steak pasty I have had in years.The drinks were very well served and presented and the whole experience was well above our expectations . Will certainly call again .

the new owners haven't changed the coffees they are still fabulous and there is still a wide range of gorgeous cakes on offer and the toasted teacakes are lush, very welcoming owner Leigh makes you feel at home and the waitresses are very helpful. quiet room in the back. will keep going in for my decaf skinny latte

I think they serve the best Latte coffee in Tiverton. They are also very friendly and cakes are delicious.

Very friendly staff in this lovely little coffee shop. We called in for a coffee while out shopping on a week-end visit to Tiverton, while in the café the lady brought out some pasties she'd just cooked and as my husband loves pies or pasties he had to try them, he said that it was really good, so if you want a nice coffee support The Independent Coffee Trader.

Went in for a chat up with an old friend. Was greeted warmly and service quickly. Great selection of drinks and cakes and in my opinion stylishly decorated.

Recently reopened under new ownership, can report coffee just as good as ever and cakes/pastries too.. The i is a bonus...but make sure you are reading today's!

Just to let you all know that this cafe has now re-opened with a new owner. Visited this morning and can report that the coffee, pastries and friendly welcome are still just as good. Long may it continue!

Love the friendly atmosphere plus the best home made cheese scones and amazing homemade Lumberjack cake - nothing too much trouble. Everything a cafe should be !!

This place is run by very friendly people and all the staff are polite. Even the other customers will sit and chat with you so there's a really cosy atmosphere! Still, my favourite thing about the cafe is the freshly baked goodies. Delicious!

It is not off the beaten track,not big, but the service, coffee and cakes are lovely, as it says independent, definitely not part of a chain, a good stopping off point on your way into town

Best Coffee in Tiverton. Lovely decor, music & staff. Not to mention cakes & other items on sale. Pasties are also delicious if you are looking for a lunch time snack. You will not be disappointed!

Good value, exemplary coffee and friendly welcoming staff. Infact some of the best coffee we've had out in a long time in. My wife who's pregnant really enjoyed her decaf version of their flat white coffee. We didn't sample the cakes but they looked amazing. If you are in Tiverton and in need of a pick-me-up then you needn't look anywhere else!

Every time I call in for coffee I end up buying one of the lovely cakes on offer. Freindly staff with a good atmosphere.

The cakes are drool worthy. The pasties are award winning. The liquid stuff, coffee ,tea, hot chocolate are the best quality. Local art is on sale. Just a really nice space.

This was my first visit but most definitely won't be my last. The welcome was friendly, the atmosphere was relaxed and shared a lovely couple of hours enjoying great drinks and food. Looking forward to next visit.

While I am not a coffee drinker my wife is and she like that the latte was hot and creamy. I liked that the staff were very friendly and the overall approach was to ethically source coffee. Nice choice of rooms to sit in while enjoyed our cakes drinks.

My wife and I regularly pop in here for coffee. Richard and Steph are excellent hosts and we always get a nice warm welcome. Lovely quite coffee shop with very nice surround and friendly clientele. Their coffee is smooth and taste divine. Thoroughly recommend their Cheese scones served with Cornish butter baked by Steph. Also serve a delicious Cornish pasty ,

Excellent coffee shop. The coffee is very, very good and the cakes are very moorish (& home cooked). The whole presentation of the shop is sublime, from the vintage-style crockery used, to the local artwork hanging upon the walls. The owners (husband and wife?) are both very friendly and welcoming. You'll forget your in Tiverton and almost think your stepping into a classic coffee house in Vienna! Superb!

Amazing Coffee, Hot Chocolate n Cake. I visit on a regular basis sometimes with guest. The service is calm, friendly and welcomes a chat.

A must visit when in Tiverton. The Coffee is excellent (smoothies fantastic too!) and there is always a great selection of fresh cakes to tempt you. The welcome is warm and with a lovely selection of local art its a great place to be.

My wife and I have visited this cafe on many occasions since it opened and we keep returning as it is serving the best coffee by far in the area. There is a fairly good range of good quality cakes and pastries but we have never had a meal here so could not tick the box "Is this one of the best meals that you have had in a restaurant?" Yes/No There is good friendly service and we would recommend anyone to visit this cafe who loves to drink coffee and sample cakes and pastries.

I absolutely love this place! The staff are friendly, it has a good atmosphere and the coffee is great! There is local artwork on display and available for purchase which is well selected as it often has local themes as well. Ideal for the visitor to Tiverton, but for a local like myself it also helps me to appreciate more the aesthetic value of my home town. The coffee is smooth and always well presented in awesome chinaware which can be purchased in the shop and the cakes are often too tempting to miss out on! There is always a different range available and I have never been disappointed by them. The back room seating area is pleasant with comfy seating and well lit, helping you to escape the bustle of Gold Street while you enjoy a relaxing break!Well done guys - this is my favourite coffee place in Tiverton.

This is coffee for coffee lovers. The owner knows what he's talking about and seems to be a genuine enthusiast. Cakes baked fresh on-site and looked excellent, though I didn't partake in this occasion.Very honest sales advice regarding Aeropress metal filter, so I opted to buy paper filters from them.Heartily recommend.

The coffees here exceed the coffee found at all other coffee shops in Tiverton, including large chains such as Costa. It has a lovely flavour and the milk is always steamed to perfection. Delicious home made cakes. Best place for coffee and a cake in the whole of Tiverton, and a lovely friendly atmosphere too. Highly recommended.

My husband and I called in today and were so pleased. The Independent Coffee Trader is spotlessy clean and the man serving was welcoming and friendly. The drinks were lovely and the cakes were freshly made and tasted gorgeous. I really hope that in the ever more competitive field of coffee shops the Independent Coffee Trader will survive.

This is my favorite place to have coffee and homemade cake. You always get a warm welcome and if you want to chat with the owner, its always free and easy but if you want to sit and chill you can. The homemade cakes and scones are yummy and made on the premises so well worth a visit!

My husband, my two young daughters and I went on a busy Saturday, we were made to feel very welcome. The coffee was delicious, so much so we bought some beans so we could brew the same coffee at home. The cakes are delicious totally homemade so they were able to tell me exactly the ingredients so I had no allergy concerns. This cafe is a very special place totally different from the usual chain run of the mill coffee shops. It's a pity they are too far away from where I live to go as often as I'd like!

I have to say we enjoyed our experience at this new coffee shop, however I have to say, once seated you are not sure whether it is table or counter service , there is no information to tell you as such, and the person who was behind the counter was not at all forthcoming in telling you otherwise - eventually we did make a move to the counter, to give our order, it was only then when they asked for payment did it become apparent. The tea was good, as is the coffee. Good luck, just a few things need tweaking

Called by for a take away and first impressions of this new enterprise very favourable. Nice flat white, double ristretto with great coffee and well textured milk. Food looked great too. I'll be back.

Had to put it in the restaurant category as it is not what you would call an attraction and definitely not a hotel, but it is a very friendly and pleasant cafe, run by a friendly ex marine and his wife as well as the usual coffees like latte, americano, capachino they have some very unusual ones and even more unusual teas. The ambience and the decor are very pleasant and a nice change from the ordinary cafe, with unusual china. The is both cakes and fruit available. The coffee is not the usual run of the mill coffee it is top quality coffee.

This bijou coffee shop in Tiverton serves superb coffee and scrummy cakes. Its authentic coffee is supplied by specialist supplier. Recently opened it deserves a visit if you really appreciate good coffee. Great 17th century map of the world to admire on the wall as well. Great service.
