A great place for lunch. Often special offers. Today we had fish and chips but a week or so back we had their afternoon tea. Great value, fresh produce and friendly staff.

Booked a table for 4 yesterday evening and the whole experience was lovely. The food was delicious! We had the seafood platter to share with new potatoes which was amazing, so many prawns and smoked salmon. The other couple had fish and chips and they were very happy with that too. The deserts were equally delicious. No custard on the menu but the chef made some for me, lashings of it, as requested for my sticky toffee pudding. The best I’ve ever had. Must also mention the waitress who was lovely and very helpful as was the Australian barman ! Thank you for a lovely evening 😊

Stopped for a coffee and a chat with friends. Cappuccino arrived and was tepid at best and had no frothy top - was just a coffee with milk. Took back and said it was cool and they tipped it in the milk froth jug and warmed it then just popped back in cup. Very disappointed. If they can’t get a simple coffee correct………….

Visited with friends for an evening meal. My friend ordered a starter which wasn’t great. We all had fish & chips which was over cooked & the fish looked like like it was frozen. The quality was poor considering the price. This must have been one of the worst meals I have had in a while. Terrible

We visited here after a spa day nearby for my wife’s 40th. We initially called the Masons Arms at Strawberry Bank to see if they were serving food. We were told they were, but after driving there we were told head office had advised us incorrectly so we visited here instead, and it was great. We sat in the back garden, which I had never seen before, and it is a great location, especially on a sunny day. I had the pie of the day which was beef and rosemary and my wife had the chicken burger. Both were really good, a little overpriced but would definitely go back.

For as many years as i can remember we have always visited the huntsman on Christmas eve after a walk for some festive beers, food and a sit around the fire. Over these years we have always enjoyed our visit hense the re return. This year we ordered two portions of chips at £5 a go, sadly these chips arrived in a silver tin the size you would imagine as a side to a sandwich. For the price and past experience we were shocked, mentioning it to staff man no difference. Especially today when we have just paid £2.50 for a side of chips that contained twice as many. Times are hard but that's embarrassing. we always preferring the huntsman because of its cosy inviting feel and reasonable menu but next year we may have to rethink

Decided to stop for some lunch at the huntsman’s inn. We were not disappointed , had soup and a sandwich. The presentation was so nice , the soup was home made and delicious. My sandwich had a thick piece of ham again I would say was home cooked. My partner had cheese and pickle which he said was perfect. We had salad and Cole slaw the salad had a very nice dressing on it and the coleslaw was home made. We also had a portion of chips , they were proper chips. So a very nice meal. The bar had a good atmosphere , the people being friendly. The young lady that served us was busy she did everything , she served in the bar took the orders and served us with the food , she made sure everyone was happy and satisfied. Very very happy with the service and everything about our visit, will be back again

We visited this venue this eve purely because it was the only venue near to where we were staying and meant we could have a drink . Although the prices were off putting we thought it would be nice to have a nice meal in nice surroundings. Upon arrival in the venue we initially had to send one of the drinks back as it was totally flat . The premises were virtually empty . We ordered our food and after a long wait , we’re finally presented with five meals . At almost £16 for pie and chips I guess we were expecting something spectacular but we’re bitterly disappointed. Then came the gluten free burger . The bun was that hard it seemed like it was made of concrete then we cut into the burger and it was raw ! We had to return the meal which spoilt the evening . The atmosphere in the pub was totally flat and it was clear none of the staff wanted to be here , no one smiled and we felt like an inconvenience. Sadly don’t think we would be tempted to return

Very disappointed in this over priced pub/hotel On entry the person behind the bar wasn’t very competent, and didn’t know what do do when told the draft cider was flat… food wasn’t great my gluten free burger was totally raw and the bun microwaved for so long it was solid.. it was that offensive to me I couldn’t bring myself to eat an alternative meal… the others meals weren’t brilliant but passable for a cafe, the desserts ordered where Tesco specials with the wrap still round them.. I wouldn’t recommend this venue, if your driving look for somewhere else that has better reviews, we will next time

The "so called" pie of the day was a casserole of tinned soup with bits floating in in it & a burnt pastry lid on top. The peas had been "over-microwaved" & were dry & un-edible & cost £15.95! The burger was RAW in the middle & the bun was hard (had obviously been microwaved too much). The customer care skills of the staff were poor. I'd come in here for a drink again, but never to eat again. We were all disappointed....

Visited this pub restaurant attached to the Newby Bridge Hotel as other better rated places were fully booked. Arrived to an almost empty venue, so didn’t expect great things. On arrival we found the bar unmanned and saw others turn up and simply walk out because there was no one to greet them. The service overall was erratic with a slightly awkward server not quite in control of the process. A neighbouring table had to wait a good half hour for their food before being told an error in the ordering process meant the order had not gone through. The good news however is that the food itself was actually pretty good. The gammon was well cooked and came with a fried egg and pineapple in the trad way although the chips were a little bland and dry. The sandwiches were okay too. We had desserts, which unfortunately were a bit meh, especially the sticky toffee pudding which seemed to be a shop bought version - which is pretty inexcusable given that the pudding comes from the lakes area! Our main gripe though was the price - although the portions were pretty good the meal seemed overpriced, especially the desserts which were not good value for what they were. I think we might come again, but only if the service and food quality was made a bit more consistent and the prices kept a little more reasonable given the offering involved.

We drove out to Newby Bridge without prior research, thinking it was a town. Oops. After a false start at a very overpriced hotel, we went to The Huntsman Inn for lunch. We both chose scampi and chips from the specials board. It was very quiet, we had plenty of space to choose where to sit, so picked a table which could seat four which had a lovely view. Husband enjoyed his ale. The food arrived in good time. I admit to being slightly disappointed by the presentation. A teeny salad garnish and lemon wedge would have been nice. But the scampi was tasty, great tartar sauce, nice chips - luckily I like crunchy. Very relaxed atmosphere and helpful staff. I'd paid after ordering, frankly if the server had offered a desert menu we may well have chosen something. Note to self - leave the tab open.

We had arrived at the Huntsman Inn after a excellent day at Cartmel Races, firstly ordering our food the waiter then came back out and told us that there was no steak pie after 3 members of our party had ordered this, they then had to change their order to the curry. Our drinks had arrived and 5 diet cokes were ordered unfortunately these had to be sent back due to the lack of cola syrup resulted in a glass of coloured, carbonated water at a inflated price. Then the waiter returned to inform us that there was no rice for the curries, rice a staple accompaniment that a food establishment runs out of I find this confusing. A hour and a half later our meals arrived unfortunately the majority of the meals were not correct, the steak which has been asked for with salad came with vegetables, the curry’s that had no rice then came with French fries when chunky chips were asked for. The fish and chips then came without a portion of gravy which was asked for then waiter then came back and asked if everything was okay we then mentioned about the gravy the member of our party had not received and had to then eat her meal without due to no staff being around then after complaining twice about the gravy, after we had finished our meal the waiter then came back over and asked if we had received the portion of gravy in which we then had said no and we had finished our meal now and there was no apologies from the staff.

We were looking for somewhere to have lunch whilst on an assignment. Looking for good quality home cooked food really that would keep us going into the evening. There was quite a selection to choose from here including sandwiches etc. We opted for two main meals of a burger & fries and fish n chips. The burger tasted good - looked home made. The fish was cooked perfectly in crispy beer batter served with proper chips and the portion size was fine. I had asked for bread - but no bread arrived with the meal. The tea and coffee were fine - served promptly before the food arrived. We didn't have to wait too long for our food. The service was good (polite member of staff), though it seemed like they could have done with an extra member of staff near the bar ready to greet customers or take food orders as one guy seemed to be doing everything. The bar was 'unmanned' for a time. The price of the food was a few pounds more than what you would probably normally pay for the same elsewhere, but I put that down to it being the Lake District as the prices in another restaurant close by to the Huntsman were even more costly. There was a little dog doing the rounds picking up whatever had fallen on the carpet from guests, so this seems to be a dog friendly pub (we asked about this in case we were visiting again and were bringing our own dog).

We called in here for food and drinks tonight. Service was great but only one person on trying to be waiter and serve drinks too. However his service was great and friendly. Food was nice too, I've given the average rating as I found the choice on the menu to be very limited, and also the portion sizes were very poor, almost child size. This would be acceptable for a chain pub selling buy one get one free meals, not for a place that charges top prices for their food though.

Called in last Saturday, early evening. Had bolognese with garlic bread and scampi and chips. Both red hot and large portions on our table 20 minutes from placing the order. The decor was old, but then so is the pub ! It could have done with a bit of a spruce up and our table had not been wiped down after the last customer which was pretty bad.Lots of restaurant choices in the area and this was an ok bar.

Visited for dinner. Traditional bar food in a pub setting - wooden pannelling decor a bit tired. Gammon was very good with 2 eggs chips peas and relish for 12.95. Pudding was very disappointing. Only 3 choices. Went for strawberries and cream. Terrible value. 2 spoons of cream and 2 small strawberries diced! More cream and strawberries. Cost 5.95!

Waited over an hour for our food with 2 young children, the food was over priced. When it finally arrived it was ok but not worth the cost or wait. Always a long queue at the bar as only 1 barman, he was very helpful & friendly but clearly needs more staff. Would not return here, a real disappointment & from talking to others in the bar they were very much of a similar opinion.

The pub grub offered is no different from anywhere else and if using a number of times never really changes . The fish and chips had batter that was too greasy although the salad was okay for my wife.

We were visiting the area and decided to try the Sunday Carvary at this hotel. The setting is nice and the staff were friendly. There was a choice of three meat's all of which were tasty. However, roast potatoes were poor, there was only a choice of another two veg - carrots and cauliflower cheese (cauliflower cheese was watery and tasteless) . The starters were an odd choice of cold buffet dishes. We did however enjoy the puddings. Last year we eat at the swan and had delicious Sunday lunch but felt it was expensive, however on reflection I would have rather spent more and enjoyed my meal

So we visited here on the way back from ulverston. The bar staff were friendly when we eventually got served. We were not given a menu but told to pick it up on the way to the dining area. We were hoping for a starter but there were none on the menu , we ordered at the bar. We were later shocked to see residents of the hotel next door given a separate menu, starters included , bread on the table and waiter service ! This is what we would have liked but it was only for the hotel residents:The food was average, hence the rating, we left hungry , very small portions. Nice traditional decor, would never go back though :/

I visited with my family during a 5 day visit to the lake district. We had an evening meal at this pub. I had a dish called the fishermans, which consists of 3 small bowls of whelks, prawns and smoked salmon, also included was a roll mop and small salad and a small roll. At £13.00 I expected more. My wife had a gammon that was nothing special and looked very fatty. The children's meals were what you would expect, but their deserts were described as mini, and they were true to their word..2 spoonfuls and there gone!! Wouldn't return and a shame as a beautiful location.

Popped in for a drink on Sunday evening. Tables set out as for restaurant so no really suitable for groups going out for drinks. Seems dark and gloomy when going in. Would not recommend.

We were staying at the Newby Bridge Hotel next door and fancied some lunch. Thought we would try out the food here and see what it was like. I ordered the fish finger and tartar sauce sandwich that came with chunky chips and side salad, it was only £6.95 and it was gorgeous! Menu didn't say it came with chips so I was very pleasantly surprised when I got a plate full of chunky chips to go with it and for only £6.95! Couldn't eat all of it, but it was fab! My partner ordered fish and chips at £9.95. Again the food was lovely, big fish and had no bones, came with chunky chips and tartar sauce with side salad. Would definitely return here for food, the quality of the food and the portion sizes for the price were great! Young lady who served us was so friendly. Just a shame about the hotel next door, it's not very hygienic in the rooms

We visited the huntsman aware of some of the negative reviews, but I must say we were pleasantly surprised. The food and service were pretty good and atmosphere pleasant and welcoming. I would definitely recommend a visit here, a reasonable gastro-pub for a reasonable price!

We stopped here on our way home from a holiday, 8 people in total (4 adults & 4 kids)They accommodated the 8 of us no problem by pulling 2 tables together.Menu was nice & kids menu was good, our waitress was very attentive, fast service in pleasant surroundings!Food was very nice, adults all had fish & chips, the chips were the chunkiest we had seen! Kids enjoyed a variety, from mini fish & chips to spaghetti bologneise, fish finger butty & cheesy beans on toast!Fairly priced & not rushed at all!The bathroom was lovely as well & the fresh flowers in there was a lovely touch

After a very wet walk in the hills nearby we were driving past looking for a coffee stop but decided to stay for lunch. They easily accommodated our group of 7 and were well set up for separate payment at the end. A good choice of food from soup to sandwiches up to larger lunches like burgers or fish n chips. We all found something, and everyone said it was good. Happily eat here again.

We were a large party who had booked and given our order in advance as requested by the manager. On arriving it took over an hour to serve the food. Unfortunately one meal was not served and although the waitress had looked around with a plated meal she failed to ask who had not been served and left. It was only after bringing this to the attention of the bar manager that the meal was served but everyone else had finished their meals. When this was addressed at the bar the manager was very rude and said that at least everyone had had a nice evening and were laughing. Not really the point considering the lengths we had gone to in the first place. He also insisted in charging for the meal and did not even apologise for the inconvenience. A shame that the food was only average. I Doubt we wiil be visiting again.

Had a hummus in pitta salad, and chips, at The Helston Grill last night, and my goodness, it was the best thing I've eaten in ages. Perfectly balanced, plentiful. The hummus was delicious, the pickled white cabbage the best I've ever eaten. Chips were hot, and really tasty. Thank you for a wonderful meal

Wednesday lunch in the sun at the Watering Hole. Had steak loaded fries with garlic sauce and crispy onion bits. Portion was huge we could have shared one to be honest. Never had a bad meal in the multiple times we've had breakfast, lunch or dinner here, top notch venue 👍

Disappointing stay We stayed in Room Eight & we booked a double room. The room was basement level and was tiny with low ceilings, smelled heavily of chemicals and later mold. We had to keep the windows open but unfortunately the one small window opened out onto a busy road. The road was meters away from the window and the cars go fast, so it was really noisy day and time The bath was narrow and not full length and weirdly sticky. Really disappointed with our stay as we'd read such lovely reviews and the pictures (which are of different rooms to ours) looked so nice .
