En route from Perth to Brechin for an evening we were in need of a quick meal. Having been an infrequent visitor to this well known ‘truckers’ haunt for quite a few years I was pleased to introduce my brother-in- law to the Horseshoe. He was utterly charmed and delighted by its homely atmosphere and traditional, straightforward and satisfying Scottish fare. The promptly rustled up breaded fish and chips with peas alongside our coffee and hot chocolate certainly hit the spot. The fish was cooked to perfection, the chips were hot and crispy, all in all excellent value for money. Long may it continue to offer its own authentic and notably unpretentious brand of catering. Thanks. We’ll be back!

First visit today . Parking area more than a bit muddy , due to horrendous rain in last 8 weeks . But warm welcome inside . With 2 friends , one had mince and tatties , one chose the Turkey , as I did . Food came very quickly , on looking at my plate of turkey it looked amazing , and did not disappoint . The plate of mince and tatties disappeared very quickly . Followed by 2 x Apple Crumble with Custard and one Christmas Pudding and Custard . Then 2 x Flat White and One Regular Coffee. Not my turn to pay , but it looked like Great Value . I will certainly return.

Have visited the establishment on many occasion and until today have had no complaints. My husband went up and ordered poached eggs on toast x 2, cap coffee and black tea. After waiting for quite a while, the waitress then delivers to scrambled eggs on toast, we both said we ordered poached eggs, she then takes them away only to return with the same plates to tell us that is what we ordered, so we would have to take them and if we wanted poached eggs we would have to pay for that as well. My husband refused to do this then a gentleman came through from the kitchen and started shouting that if we wanted poached eggs we would have to pay again. My husband refused and demanded his money, eventually he told the waitress to give my husband his money back. He got his money back for the so called scrambled eggs for which he got £6.00, which I find very strange as scrambled eggs on toast is £3.20 and poached eggs are £3.00 So if he had ordered scrambled eggs he would have got £6.40. It is absolutely so un-professional to deal with customers in this way, and we will certainly not be back.

This is a brilliant place for your breakfast. Anything you want on a plate. The original greasy spoon. The breakfast you get here is fabulous especially if you go for their set breakfast. The large one is enough to keep you going all day. The small breakfast for me is enough. When you get a tea it’s a proper mug and not one of those little cups you can’t get your finger in . It’s a brilliant truckers stop and truckers prices to boot so you get a lot for your money. The staff are great but there’s no denying the place needs upgrading. I used to go in here but it has gradually been going downhill for a few years. I only stop for my paper while I’m out on my bike nowadays but don’t even have a cuppa nowadays. I will stick with my newspaper or rolls from the front shop and won’t venture into the cafe until I hear good reports. The other thing is you actually smell the grease when you pass this cafe. I believe their famous bacon rolls, the bacon is deep fried?

Arrived just before three in the afternoon and placed our food order which the young ladies took with a smile and we sat down and drank our tea whilst waiting for our order which came really quick and was on the mark, no complaints about the food or the service. What really annoyed me was to be told by my elderly friend the owner kept looking at his watch and shaking his head which made him feel really uncomfortable. I wish I had seen him do this. Obviously the truckers love it but it’s friendly and value for money. £3.30 for a bacon roll and a cup of tea can’t be all bad. A good stop off between Perth and Dundee. Would recommend.

Escaping from home on a fresh February Sunday morning, we set off with a view to a browse through the Abernyte Antique Centre between Dundee and Perth. Diverted by a glance at Errol Boot Sale, amid the double-figure temperatures and quite intense windiness, we then were again delayed in our intentions by a call from the wife's sister to meet her and new husband who were having the all-day breakfast £5.50 feast at The Horseshoe Cafe situated betwixt our then present and previously intended destinations. And I must say ... this modest place with its muddy car park, was fully packed with people who do 'all-day'Well staffed and ever so cheery, we had Scrambled Egg and Mince Rolls with Chips and Tea for less than a tenner ... and it was all as good as was its pure value for money. Maybe closer to transport stop than even the most basic restaurant, be sure you will not starve here, nor will you be bankrupted or disappointed. This particular Horseshoe fits a lot of people's taste and expectations when stopping for food off a busy main dual carriageway. Well worth a try.

On the A90 at teatime and remembered the Horseshoe, arrived to find six trucks and one car in car park which is always reassuring as lorry drivers know where to find the best eating places. I ordered an all day breakfast (which is now increasingly difficult to find after 11am) and my wife ordered lasgne plus the obligatory mugs of tea. Food was served very quickly (time is money for truckers), big portions piping hot and excellent quality. We scoffed the lot and marvelled that the total bill was £12!Decor and ambiance are unpretentious traditional transport cafe with lots of truck photos of different vintages and formica but it was all spotlessly clean. More lorries and three other cars arrived when we were there so its not all truck stop guys, in fact one of the cars had two ladies who lunch types! Toilets basic but adequate, staff efficient and welcoming which combined with the food make this a place to remember. Sadly it is not signposted off the dual carriageway and the relatively new flyover system makes it safer to access but less visible. Please don't let the dated exterior and dirt parking area put you off and do try it out.

Stopped off here today with my daughter whilst we were en route to Perth. The cafe is not directly accessed from the dual carriageway as you have to deviate slightly but it is well worth this minimal inconvenience. The thing that struck us most was the value for money prices here in comparison to the prices charged by the nearby competition.Okay, the car park is not brilliant, it is not tarmacked and can be a bit muddy after rainfall.A popular stop with the truckers but also open to the public. The interior is dated, it is a bit like stepping back in time, but in a way I quite liked this. There are photographs of lorries and agricultural vehicles adorning all of the walls and several lorry and agricultural models on shelves and in display cabinets. Our welcome was pleasant and the staff were helpful. My daughter and I both had the homemade lentil soup which came served with a roll and butter. It was tasty and enjoyable. The café had a few people in including truckers but was not overly busy. Will definitely keep this place in mind for future visits as I would dearly like to sample some of their other offerings. One of the main things that appealed to us about this cafe was that they serve traditional down to earth food at reasonable prices. By this I mean Scottish favourites which include steak pie, breaded haddock, mince, and roast silverside of beef. They also do set breakfasts, hot and cold filled rolls, snacks etc.If what you have read appeals to you, go on, give it a try, I don't think you will be disappointed.

Tucked just off the A90 a couple of miles west of Dundee I'm glad our daughter spotted this place and suggested a visit. Its a lorry drivers cafe with leatherette seats in booths with nice old fashioned wooden edged tables. All day breakfasts and filled rolls, toasties, fish and chips , and steak pie typify the fare...and the steak pie chips and peas we had was plentiful, tasty, and terrific value at £5.80. Tea 90 pence a mug was good and strong. Quiet on Sunday as a quiet day for road freight, but I bet they do a roaring trade through the week. Displays of boxed model trucks of various hauliers and plenty of snaps of lorries over the years adorn the walls. Nice and clean and well presented place updated little over the years and so with a homely retro feel. Loved it..our new pitstop on the Dundee student run.

I usually have an all day breakfast which consists of two eggs, link sausage, lorne sausage, black pudding, bacon, fried bread, tattie scone, beans and toast. A plateful indeed, all cooked to perfection. Finish this off with apple crumble and ice cream and you are getting a good meal at a very reasonable price. You do not have to wait any time between courses as the friendly staff have this timed to perfection. The Horse-Shoe Café is a very unassuming café on the main A90 between Perth and Dundee. We have passed it many times but assumed it was a truck stop, only today we stopped to have a closer look and we are so pleased we did. The café is very dated with old fashioned booths and walls covered with pictures but was spotlessly clean and there was a lovely atmosphere. The place was busy but we found a table and then ordered at the counter. My husband and I both had full breakfast (with a couple of changes to mine as I am fussy - no problem), cooked to order and served to us in around 15 minutes along with a mug of tea. Plates were cleared with gusto. Now we have tried the Horse-Shoe we will be sure to return as it has a charm of its own, friendly staff and great food.Long opening times are a bonus 8am - 9pm on weekdays and shorter hours at the weekend. My one negative point would be the car park which is very uneven with lots of potholes.

Great little place to stop at on route north. It is a good truck stop but ideal for anyone making wanting a quick meal or snack. The food is tasty, service very good and clean. The staff work well together and no one has a long wait. I would recommend this place for all travellers.

Great little place to stop at on trip going north. We have been a couple times and yes it is a truck stop but it is clean, great food and fast service. The staff are very friendly and work very well together. I would recommend this for anyone wanting a quick but fair priced meal. It should be SIGNPOSTED a bit better as you can miss it if not knowing it is there.

Have passed this truck stop cafe many times but never went in. Last week after a game of golf I did, and as really delighted with the tasty and quickly served fare. Steak Pie and Chips and peas. Sticking to your ribs as it should be and all for a very reasonable price. Finished off with a Mr Whippy Ice Cream. What can be better than that? The inside looks very basic and is decorated with endless pictures of articulated lorries (not the usual decor you'd imagine!) and toy trucks and Corgi models of such afficionados delights as Eddie Stobart lorries and even Harry Lawson lorries from Broughty Ferry. Wonderful, and well recomended. I was telling a friend who simply said, "why did you never stop there before? It's great".It's not the Ritz or the Savoy or Claridges. Never purports to be, just good value tasty truck stop food.

I recently stopped in past this roadside cafe for a quick bite to eat, I was driving a coach for a local holiday firm and, having passed this cafe literally hundreds of times, I thought it was high time I was nipping in past to 'size up the joint' as it were, mainly for a potential stop with passengers in the future. The coach I was driving was empty at the time, so it was only me turning up. Whilst the location is excellent, the atmosphere and decor is warm and cosy, the quality of the food is very good indeed and value for money is too, I was instantly put off returning to the cafe, with or without potentially 40+ paying customers, by the attitude of the young lady who greeted me with 'oh thank god it's just you, I hate coaches coming in'. I thought she was joking, but she reiterated her total dislike for coach passengers. Not a brilliant first impression :( When I made it apparent that I might be persuaded to put some business their way in the future, she very kindly suggested to me that I take my passengers to the nearby Horn Milk Bar, as 'they're quite happy to take coaches in'. A second lady, presumably in charge of the cooking side of things stepped in, and suggested I should only come in if I phoned them in advance, which is standard practice anyway, it seemed to be an attempt to reassure me that I would indeed be made welcome, along with any passengers I had. Despite me being made to feel quite unwelcome in the first instance (and despite the sign outside stating 'cafe and restaurant, all welcome'), I enjoyed the cheeseburger and chips very much and as I say, the pricing was very good, atmosphere cosy and everything overall was good. I would've been more than happy to include this restaurant in my itineraries in the future. BUT, unfortunately the welcome I received from the younger girl behind the counter did put me off returning unfortunately, I shall take her own advice and continue to stop at the Horn Milk Bar, which has been very accommodating and grateful for the business that coaches bring in to them, for many years.

Another truck driver here who has used this place a few times on runs to Aberdeen. It is not pretentious when it comes to the surroundings, but it is very clean and the staff are friendly. The breakfast is great value. Freshly cooked; none of this lying under heat lamps nonsense. Service is quick and efficient. Couldn't ask for more at this price.

Came in with my partner last Sunday for breakfast. We were well impressed. Yes, the decor might be a bit dated etc. but the food is worth it. Plus, great value for money. Went back during the week with my mum for tea, excellent value for money again. I had the steak pie. While the gravy was a bit thin, the steak and pastry was great. My mum asked for a small portion of the roast beef. And that was huge!!!!!This place is a real blast from the past! We will most certainly return.

This should be the quintessential bacon roll stop for me as I live quite close but alas the bacon is too salty. This spoils the visit. The place needs an upgrade too as it is pretty old with poor furnishings. Being the only stop on the road I doubt they have to try too hard but they should try harder.

We stop here nearly every time we drive from Edinburgh to Dundee. It completely knocks the Horn, just down the road, for six and it makes you realise what value and quality is all about. If you are a little on the large size you may have to squeeze into the seating but can't fault it for what it is.

Great food and the atmosphere and the layout of the shop makes you feel like you're in an American trucker diner. I had the steak pie an it had around half a cow of steak in it definelty value for money and very easy to get to.

Meant to write this for ages..finally got round to it!This place is probably the best value for money you will ever find...great food, nice friendly staff, nothing fancy just honest to goodness down to earth eating. My wife and I frequently go for brunch on a Sunday - loads of freshly cooked bacon eggs etc etc etc..and that is just the small one - two steaming hot cups of tea, toast and butter - all for under a tenner - what more could you ask for.If you don't believe me about how great this place is just go along and try it...you won't be disappointed!Long live real down to earth places like this where the food is more important than the Logo!

Often stop here for a snack when travelling between Perth and Dundee. Great value food at reasonable prices and always good quality with friendly service. I always have a Lorne Sausage Roll as it is the best in the world. Dont look for fancy decor or posh fittings - this is for hungry travellers and the trucks stop here - that says it all!

Have stopped at the Horse shoe café quite a few times on the way to Dundee over the years, thought its about time to write a review! The staff in the café are really friendly and its is always really busy when we have visited. Popped in this morning for a bit of breakfast and we both had a bacon roll and a link sausage roll, really good value at only £1.80 each. With a drink each we were only £9 for breakfast, great value for money. They also do main meals like Steak Pie, Fish and Chips, Roast beef dinner and all very reasonably priced at £5.50. They could do with a sign for the turn-off (Inchture turn off) as if you were a visitor you would be past the café with no way to get into it.

I love this cafe and have stopped here loads of times.. I have never had a meal at it which I didn't love and clear the plate. Steak pie, fish, breakfasts and several other options all prepared fresh and taste lovely. The service is friendly and never have to wait anymore than 5-10 minuted for your food. Try the homemade soup with a roll, it's very nice. Good sized car park so plenty space for truckers and cars to share.

I love this place! We stay in the neighbouring village and often grab a Sunday breakfast or pop in for tea when we can't be bothered cooking. It's nothing fancy, good old fashioned grub. The prices are ridiculous (£5.00 for a steak pie, chips and peas that would sink a ship. Under a fiver for a beast of an all day breakfast too). Everything is fairly basic and old school, no frills home cooking. You'll struggle to find anywhere that beats it for value for money. It's got a certain charm to it too, formica tables and benches, the walls are covered in photos of old trucks, you're greeted at the door by the owners sheep dog, the staff are all lovely. One critisism - The toilets are reminiscent of that scene from Trainspotting, lick of paint wouldn't go a miss. All in all tho superb - Great wee guilty pleasure.

Im an HGV driver and sample cafés all over the uk. I have to say that this wee place comes in the top 5 in all the uk. Its a 'proper' old school cafe selling food at affordable prices. Your coffee or tea comes in a mug...like being at home. The food is good and suites most people's tastes. Always handy if your in the Perth / Dundee area.

The location, the restaurant, the staff and the food are all excellent. My partner and I had a truly wonderful Sunday lunch and each dish (cheese souffle, John Dory and blueberry pana cotta) worthy of 10 out of 10. scores. My only concern is that the 25% increase in the price may deter future customers.

We stayed over at the hotel on a Sunday and had dinner within the restaurant. The hotel staff were fantastic (Blake deserves special recognition - thank you!), and our room was well equipped, clean and comfortable. The hotel is located centrally so it’s easy for access to local amenities. The food in the restaurant was excellent and great value. The place was buzzing so we were so lucky to have booked in advance. The locals clearly enjoy the restaurant and made for a wonderful atmosphere. I highly recommend this place to anyone for meals, drinks and stays.
