This lovely pub is a diamond in the rough. The staff were attentive, friendly and gave great service overall and throughout. The place had a great atmosphere with a mixture in the afternoon of all ages and groups. The food was fantastic, especially the homemade Wensleydale quiche which was delicious. Followed by the very generous portion size of Sticky Toffee Pudding. Would definitely recommended and would love to return if I’m in the area again!

Called in last night for a meal. Looking forward to it after lockdown. Very disappointed.Had to ask for menu after 20 mins. Waited 1 hour for food after ordering. When food arrived the wairess asked if we wanted anything else. I replied "yes some cutlery would be nice" Fish was very strong flavored and not really nice. All in all not a good meal out. Very slow service and poor as well and food not to the standard that it used to be. Seemed the kitchen was more interested in dealing with take aways that seated customers.

Well this place can't get much passing trade, especially in these Covid-19 times! But really nice meal here today, double-cheeseburger and chips with side-salad was really tasty, and my dining partner's fishcakes were huge (and tasty too!) Washed it down with a nicely-kept pint of Wainwright's. Couldn't fault the place, great value and friendly service. Would definitely return if in the area again (I'd also recommend it as a good place for cyclists, walkers and birders!)

Friendly pub on the banks of the river Humber. Good food with a varied menu and a daily specials board. Excellent value for money, good service and generous portions. Bar area with tables, small dining room and larger conservatory overlooking the river. Advisable to book (although we called in on a whim) as frequently busy despite its remote location.

Our choice of restaurant this month was based on the Hope and Anchor being one of our favourites. Having booked a table in the conservatory, we arrived and ordered our drinks. After a cursory glance at the menu and specials board, we ordered via the lovely waitress. One friend and I ordered omelette (one of their specialties) with new potatoes and salad, one of our favourite meals and our friend decided on broccoli bake. Whilst waiting for our food, we enjoyed views across the river, although dusk was drawing in, but atmospheric lighting soon lit up the room. Our food arrived, and as usual there had been attention to detail with the presentation. Both omelettes were beautifully cooked and very tasty, the buttered new potatoes adding an extra touch to the meal. My friends broccoli bake was accompanied with chips and was very filling, and she commented that it was very tasty. After a short break, my friends ordered dessert, and I ordered a coffee. They both enjoyed the desserts which as ever, were presented and delicious. At a cost of £70, for three mains, two desserts, two hot drinks and four soft drinks, the meal was very reasonable and recommended

We have eaten at your pub on many occasions with no problems but tonight was a different experience . We arrived slightly before our reservation time & once seated were left without menus to peruse, having to ask for them then were left again for about half an hour before having our order taken . We then had to wait over an hour for our food to be served! A large party was also in but we were not warned about this at time of booking! Also the men’s toilet had toilet paper all over the floor & the ladies toilet didn’t have any paper ! I feel it was unfair of the management to let the waiting staff to bear the brunt of complaints , they are not paid enough or have the experience to deal with these complaints! Good customer service would have been to either offer a complimentary drink or discount off bill. Very much doubt if we will return!

We visited the Hope & Anchor for a Celebration Meal as a surprise for Fathers Day for 4 people, what a Experience it was !! Our table was booked for 8pm and starters didn't arrive till just after 9pm, second courses arrived at 10pm. We had our 9yr old granddaughter with us and the time we had to wait for the food coming out was unacceptable. When we tried to order certain items on a specials board which was shown to us, most items we were told were not available, ie: steak, and crab salad. We resorted to sea food platters and a prawn salad. Sea food platters was deep fried frozen produce, greasy and not pleasant. Prawn salad, very small portion of prawns, not forgetting again im guessing frozen produce. My granddaughter had chicken nuggets and I can say is she has nicer at McDonald's. We all left such a large amount of food that the £95 bill for 4 adults and a child just simply wasn't worth it. !! We were all past hunger by the time food arrived and when it did it was very dissapointing. We did complain to the chef/owner who came out to see us, he doesn't like criticism at all and was quite rude. He did eventually knock £20 off the bill but this was little consolation for a ruined evening. Been here many times before and it's always been excellent but after such a terrible experience we will not be going back again and certainly wouldn't recommend!!

Rang and booked at short notice, the pub wasn't that busy although the waitresses said it normally was, were greeted by friendly bar staff and waitress, ordered or food and our starters arrived promptly, excellently presented. My mussels were served with fresh, warm bread and were very good, my partner's garlic mushrooms were also excellent. Main course for myself was off the special board and was a crab salad which was again presented beautifully. It didn't dissapoint, a delight to eat. My partner opted for the gammon, which was again excellent and plenty of it. I would recommend the hope and anchor, it's in a lovely setting by the river, just lovely to sit and watch the large boats go by.

Very pleasant pub in a stunning location on the Ouse/Humber with a conservatory dining room that looks across the river to RSPB Blacktoft Sands. While husband was ordering drinks, I was at our table with the binoculars out, watching a Marsh Harrier. Very good carvery meal, with fresh veg and very good roast potatoes. Lamb was tender, too. Lovely staff, and very good value. Only trouble was the huge portion size - if we return to this part of the country I will order a child's portion. I really wanted dessert but was far too full.

Gorgeous day walked 2.5 hours with 4 dogs, asked waitress to come outside to order a drink , 20 mins nothing, another customer went in to remind her, only just opened so only a few customers, she came out and said she couldn’t bring me a drink as I have to go to the bar and pay for it , I gave her the money as couldn’t go in with 4 dogs , she said she would have to ask the manager if it was ok. She eventually did by then I had been there 35 mins with no drink , I then said is it possible to offer lunch as friends were on the way and in a rush, no again unless I come in and paid!! Had to wait for friends to arrive so I could order, food took 45 mins then we had finished our drinks , and again they wouldn’t bring us a drink out even tho I had just spent 46 on 3 fish and chips and 2 drinks, why can’t you serve a drink outside when people are eating?!! Visited The Hope & Anchor yesterday for Sunday lunch which was all very enjoyable. Unfortunately we were sat in the bar area which apparently is dog friendly and smelt of dogs. Throughout my meal I had a bulldog sniffing around me. When reservations are made I feel customers should be made aware of where they are seated and informed of their four legged friends. Just had an early dinner at the Hope and Anchor after a recommendation. What a disappointment. I ordered the Thai red curry and was presented with a plate of soggy vegetables, all from the freezer and not fresh at all. The sauce, im fairly sure was just a jar of Lloyd Grossman's. A very pretty setting with far reaching views of the river and woodland with open fields. A lovely sunny Sunday sat at an outdoor table on the river bank eating two slices of succulent tender beef with tasty gravy served between two Yorkshire puddings perfectly cooked accompanied by directors bitter a great tasty beer. Honestly the food is the best. The meal £5.95 for a great cut of beef. the pub maybe a little hard to find it is off several roads that run between Gilberdyke and Howden and takes a while to drive down to the river or sat nav easier. Found this quiet spot from tripadvisor on our stay in the area last weekend. Sunny hot Sunday afternoon, came down here on our bikes to be greeted by very chatty and friendly young bar maid. The place was very vibrant, lovely modern decor and an extremely busy spot. After being unsure as to whether we would be able to eat due to not making a reservation and a sign on the door stating staff were on holidays, the lady on the bar sorted us a table right away. The choice on the menu for a Sunday was extensive, and we all decided on the three meat roast dinner. This was excellent, the meat was lovely and tasty, all piping hot. To follow we all squeezed in desserts, I have to say the homemade chocolate cheesecake was excellent. Lovely views from where we were sat, we even saw some boats pass. All in all an excellent trip, we will definitely book in future. Staff lovely and attentive, especially the blonde haired lady on the bar who provided us excellent service and a warm welcome. We will certainly return on our travels again.

Booked a table for my husbands birthday and was very disappointed. When we first walked in, the place was nearly empty which was a big surprise, as normally on a Saturday night, it’s packed. My husband ordered lasagna which he said was nice, I ordered the haddock and chips, the fish tasted awful, and I sent it back. So I asked for a plain omelette, which took fifteen minutes to come, and it was very well done, and very bland, no seasoning whatsoever. I asked the waitress if they had a new chef, and she said no the same for years. To say it was disappointing is an understatement. Today I’m not feeling too good, been up half the night running to the loo. We won’t be going there again. I can understand now why the place was nearly empty on a Saturday night.

We have been going to this pub restaurant for years but we won’t be going again after Mother’s Day being spoilt by over crowding and overbooking. The service was terrible with the waitresses apologising all the time about the wait. 45 minutes from finishing starter to mains being served. When the mains finally came 4 of us out of 6 ordered the steak pie but the meat was over cooked and the veg was bland and they forgot to bring the carrots my wife had to ask twice for them. My daughter in laws turkey was that dry it couldn’t me salvaged by any amount of gravy. And when we asked to see the manager he came and told us in no uncertain terms that he wasn’t the manager he was the owner as if we cared at this point he was rude and abrupt and only when our party together pushed the issue did he back down and refunded 5 meals out of 6.Please let me say that we have never complained before we haven’t had to but Mother’s Day was a disaster in there own making.

Waited 45 minutes between starter and main which I understand they are busy being Mother’s Day but after 45 minutes of waiting we had all started to loose our appetite. I had a table booked for 3 o'clock, first of all the waitresses didn't bring out our menus so we had to go ask for them, this was after waiting 10 minutes. Then we didn't get our food till about 3:55. Now considering this is a Sunday and I would say 90% if not a 100% of diners would be having the same meal, a Sunday roast, I would of said the waiting time was far too long. Then when it did come 2 of us what ordered lamb had beef instead, we told them of the mistake and the waitress came back saying the cook defiantly put lamb on our plate. Now I'm no chef but I can sure tell the difference between lamb and beef. You could tell it was beef by the texture as if it was slow cooked and a little dry. Anyway the cook sent out some more 'lamb/beef' on a plate as an apology which was a nice gesture. But we couldn't tell the beef or the lamb.

Called in on the way to a football match at North Ferriby because camra guide had recommended the beer.My first pint was sour (Thwaites Original) - had to take back (a local said it had been on at least a week without change). Was replaced with a 'Pennine' named beer i hadn't tried before - very average but not sour. Then had a half of Pedigree - not sour but not the Pedigree taste i'm used to.In the meantime another local came in and ordered a pint of Nutty Slack - which he had to return because it was sour (he said 'it tasted to be on the turn last night'.On the evidence of this visit, the local camra branch is out of touch if this pub is included in next year's camra good beer guide. Can't comment on the food but the setting is very appealing by the banks of the Humber.

We had a lovely meal in the conservatory a couple of weeks back. Great atmosphere and was wonderful being able to see the sun set over river as you eat. We ordered the camembert starter (shared it between two), which was plenty big enough between two people to have good portion. We both followed it with the large fish and chips were simply excellent. HUGE portions, which is exactly what I want to see when something markets itself as being large. Couldn't have fitted in pudding after the fish and chips but did have a drink on the riverbank afterwards as it was such lovely night. Will definitely be back next time we want pub food. We ordered our drinks at the bar and was told where our table was, We were not shown to the table. We waited, and waited and the woman behind the bar came round collecting wine glasses from the dining room, she even mentioned that as we had a drink, we wouldn't be ordering wine. We wouldn't be ordering anything without a menu. The waiting staff went past several times without saying anything. Another couple arrived and sat behind us, eventually they caught a waitresses attention and asked for the menu. I also asked a waitress. By this time we had been sat down for 30 minutes. The couple who arrived after us were asked for their order, and shortly afterwards we were asked for our order. We didn't see any food until one hour after our arrival. At 8.30 our order arrived at table. That is the end of the negative for the moment. The food arrived piping hot and very tasty. I ordered Haddock, chips, mushy peas with bread and butter, my partner had a lovely fish Risotto with crusty Ciabatta. We cleaned both plates and was offered a dessert, it was either Belgian Waffles or Fudge Cake as the cheesecake had gone.We are our dessert and went to the bar to settle up, my partner felt slightly intimidated while she paid the bill, she commented that the bar lady seemed as though she didn't want to be there. We were disappointed in the service and it didn't seem so very busy with food service. Menus arrived and the choice was excellent a good range of starters and the either the traditional Sunday roast (you could have a 3 meat option also), steak pie, hot sandwiches, plus a few more for main.We chose the 3 meat roast and what a delight with the plan of having a pud after. Lamb, pork and beef, generous slices of each, Yorkshire pud and roasts on the plate. Further dishes of veg arrived as well as pots of horseradish, apple and mint sauce. All the meats were beautifully tender and simply melted in the mouth, the veg was lovely and pipping hot. With cleaned plates the thought of the pud was just too much but we will be back as brownie sundae, sticky toffee pud, Blacktoft Mess all need testing, albeit when we are less full!A pub off the beaten track but well worth seeking out, you will not be disappointed.

Staying nearby with family, we all visited for Sunday lunch on recommendation. Hidden away and looked nothing from outside, but the food was fabulous and good size portions too. I had the 3 roast meat dinner, with beautifully cooked lamb, pork and beef. Served with roast potatoes and Yorkshire pud with extra gravy provided plus dish of mash and other veg. Good price. Staff attentive.

The decor is tired and has an oldie world feel about it. The food is ok, but it is simple pub grub. There were 16 of us and the service was good. Just didn't float my boat

My wife and I went out for a drive and ended up stopping here after having it recommended to me in the past.Ordered the Beef Sunday lunch with my wife having the same and must say it was beautifully cooked with generous portions of veg and also a side portion of mashed potato and a lovely homemade gravy. All in all a lovely meal in beautifull surroundings with curteous and attentive staff also a well stocked bar and all at very reasonable prices.A little hidden gem in a beautifull part of the world we will definately be visiting again.

First class in every way from the amazing staff to the brilliant food they serve, the starter of chicken and bacon salad is astounding, and the braising steak is to die for, always intend to have the waffle and toffee sauce with icecream but have never managed it yet,the owners are a lovely couple and always hands on , a lovely family run pub although the landlords horse tipping leaves a lot to be desired.

We are regular visitors to the Hope & Anchor but took some friends along this time. The meal did not disappoint as usual and the service was also to its usual high standard. We all left very satisfied and our friends said they would definitely visit again too.

Must say I was a wee bit disappointed with my visit the other afternoon with my wife. We popped in on the off chance after going house hunting. I have only had good food here. I ordered the double cheese burger and my wife ordered a baked potato which was fine. After a lengthy wait my burger arrived with literally 2 burgers and a slice of cheese in a bun that I can only describe as a Morrisons own. Nothing else on the bun. The chips were way over cooked also. This was mentioned to the young lady serving. I shall return as I believe this was a one off.

What a good find....our friends discovered it a few years ago. Trust your navigation, keep going and you'll find it. Mussels to start then minted lamb, all really very good. My wife's veggie option above average, which is good. Lot of places fall down on the veg options. Step outside to see the river, magnificent. Watching a boat struggle against the ebbing tide was exciting. He should have pulled in to the jetty and had a beer!

We have been here before for family gatherings but this meal was special in that it was my Step father's 70th Birthday. There was 21 of us including 2 kids, 2 teens & an assorted range of adults ages. We had all chosen our meals beforehand to help the restaurant.I had the triple roast & my girlfriend had the pork roast. There was lots of veg & extra gravy & I would have been happy with just one course as there was no scrimping with the portions.Pudding was from a good list but I chose my favourite - Sticky toffee pud with icecream whilst my girlfriend had the brandysnap basket with fruit. There is a good range of drinks here both alcoholic & non alcoholic as the restaurant is far off the beaten track & somebody always has to be the designated driver unless you fancy a long walkWe were in the conservatory as usual with great views of the Ouse river & Blacktoft bird watching area on the opposite bank. The restaurant wasn't full on a Sunday afternoon but I would ring in advance to avoid disappointment.Price for 2 with drinks about £35

I have visited this pub many times before and the food is excellent every time. I had the braised beef which I can't recommend enough. What spoilt it this time is the children in the bar area, running about, moving chairs and playing, we practically had to step over them to get served. I've never known this before in here so lets hope it was a one off, if we go again and this happens we won't be back.

Called in on the offchance of getting a table but not hopeful as it's usually fully booked but last Sunday the A63 closure meant a number of regulars had to cancel. We both had beef and it was melt in the mouth superb with fresh vegetables and potatoes. The Pedigree on draft was on top form and it was great to see a small riverside pub in such a small village quite obviously very busy with repeat customers coming from some distance. Lovely views over Trent Falls where the Ouse and Trent meet, with the chance of seeing passing coasters and pleasure boats when the tide is right.

I don't know about five star the staff here are all stars as far as my wife and i are concerned, Eddie his wife and staff always offer a warm welcome , we have been visiting the pub restaurant for several years now, we live in the brough area which is dominated by pub chain poor food and service pubs,so making the ride out to blacktoft. Is like a breath of fresh air, the food is always superb, i really do get fedup though of my wife complaining about my fish been a bit bigger than hers,i think the crab salad must be popular as well as i have noticed a few people walking out sideways, all in all a great venue well worth a visit, thanks again .

We happened upon this remote pub during a bike ride and what a great decision it was to stop to rest and refuel here! The hot beef sandwich and smoked salmon omelette were both superb and the accompanying salad was nothing but a work of art!It was a good value lunch and really a pleasant surprise to enjoy such a feast in a pretty setting overlooking the estuary. The food is clearly a cut-above normal 'pub grub' and highly recommended.

My boyfriend and I went to the Hope & Anchor last weekend for a spot of lunch. We were lucky enough to have some of the best weather of the year and thoroughly enjoyed sitting outside with a pint of cider looking at the river, before retreating in to sit in the conservatory for lunch. We both had a cheese and chutney sandwich with a side of chips; for something so simple, it really hit the spot.Staff were very friendly and the building had a lot of character - it felt like we were walking in to someone's house!

Many years since we've been here. Very good, welcoming pub and restaurant, in a unique location, with views of the adjacent river, from the garden and the conservatory. Nice staff, good menu, food quality excellent, and very generous servings. Decent wine, and very well-kept hand-pulled beer. Nice job Hope & Anchor, and decent pricing too. Highly recommended!

Ate here with a friend the other lunch time. The pub is a fairly unpretentious place, located on the banks of the River Ouse; opposite Blacktoft sands. They do a decent range of real ales and the food is decent and very reasonably-priced. Plenty of dishes for a tenner or less. We both had the Lasagne which was nice and very hot; good as we opted to sit outside on the bank of the river so we could see the view. As the pub is behind the bank, you can only really get the view from outside.
