A really lovely and welcoming community pub. The landlord went out of his way to make us feel at home and was very attentive to our needs. The pub had a great atmosphere and we chatted to both the staff and punters when we were there. Would thoroughly recommend.

I checked on line for opening times and it said 1200hrs. I went on their website to look at menus and it also said open at 1200hrs. We got there at around 1215hrs on Thursday 8th to find a sign saying not open till 1600hrs. No point having a website if it shows duff information. If Covid or anything else alters website info, then alter it, it only takes two minutes, if you value your potential customers that is We moved on to the Otter Inn at Weston and very nice it was too.

We booked a table for 5 people for a Sunday lunch birthday meet up. Booking was made a month before the date; we were travelling from both Cornwall and Hampshire and wanted to be sure that a table was available. At no point in the booking process were we given any information about limited menus on a Sunday. There is also no information about this on the website (no Sunday menu at all) or on their Facebook page, so we assumed that it was a standard menu each day. The first issue was when two of us wanted sparkling water – we thought a fairly standard request in a pub/restaurant. No, they didn’t do sparkling water, would soda water do instead? We declined and all had other drinks. No menus were brought to the table, and it wasn’t until the chap came to take our order that we discovered that on a Sunday it was ‘turkey or beef’ and that was it. Not ideal for the vegetarian with us. She was told she could probably have something from the normal menu, but there was no garlic bread to go with the lasagne and they had no pizza bases (there are signs all over the pub and outside it, advertising their pizzas) but he could do one ‘on naan bread’. This was the only viable option. The meats in the roast were plentiful. However, the roast potatoes were overdone and the selection of vegetables watery and very overcooked, with cold cheese sauce over the mushy cauliflower. Once plates were cleared, no dessert menus were offered. In the end, we asked about dessert and were told that they had ‘2 sticky toffee puddings and 1 jam sponge’ and that was it. We decided we wouldn’t bother. Given it was only 3pm at this point, and there were only a couple of other tables occupied the whole time we were there, we weren’t impressed. Not a great birthday meal for my mum, in the first meeting up with two of her children since pre March 2020. There should be some mention on the website, Facebook page, or in the messages when people are booking about the lack of choice on a Sunday. We won’t be visiting again, however convenient it is being only 5 minutes from Honiton High Street.

Wasn’t quite sure what to expect, we found this pub on the gourmet society website.. when we walked in it was fairly quiet and it was almost like we had walked into someone’s lounge.. however, within minutes we felt welcome. I booked a table for 6 sept 25th for 7-30 when we arrived the place was empty there was no welcome as such from the landlord or his wife, when it came to ordering our food one had the feeling it was to much trouble. There were several things we ordered were not available so no problem we settled for something else, I asked what sauces they done with the steak to be told we don't do sauces but you can have gravy. some of the food was ok but most was just warm or cold. When we finally asked and paid our bill £160 and ready to leave neither the land lord or his wife said thankyou in fact they were nowhere to be seen. But whilst out side getting ready to get into our cars and saying our goodbyes the landlord did come out to his car but still didn't have the decency to thank us for our custom. Will not go back again and if we had not been in it would have been deserted and no wonder as it is a very unfriendly atmosphere.

Had an excellent meal with family. All our courses were home-cooked, including desserts. Flat iron steak and sea bass fillets were really good value and perfectly cooked. Service was excellent, new landlord and landlady were most welcoming. The only 'fly in the ointment' and not the pub's fault, was a family next to us that clearly mistook the pub for a chain establishment expecting food instantly with a self-professed cider expert (who drank Thatchers) who, having been given a free sample, whinged loudly because he didn't like it! Luckily they left quite quickly leaving everyone else to enjoy their evening.

About 3 weeks ago we held a party in aid of charity at The Honiton Inn.When we booked it we agreed that we would pay a lump sum for food. When we phoned to give them the number of guests we were told that it would be £6.50 a head. I said that an amount of money had been agreed but Richard got really stroppy and said that it would be £6.50 & that was it!When I asked what time we would be able to set the tables up he said lunchtime (we thought it was a bit odd!)We arrived at 1pm & were greeted by Richard saying that we couldn't set the tables as he had bookings. He also said that he had turned down 30 bookings for that evening. And as he walked away he muttered that he thought he had made a big mistake in taking our booking as he had turned down about £1000 worth of dining. (we must have brought more than that with our party)At that point I just managed to bite my tongue & asked what time we could start setting up the tables. He replied 2pm so we went away & returned at 2pm only to be told that a group of diners had only just sat down.(At this stage I was ready to cancel the whole thing.) Yet again we went away.It was then agreed that we could return at 6pm.Everything went ok (or so I thought) until the food was served. There was plenty of it.Towards the end of the evening I was told that a member of staff was telling our guests that they could take the remaining food home. We had no problem with this, but as we were paying for the food this should have been cleared with us!On returning next morning to pick up our car etc we saw Richard & were told there was no food.I've since heard that they were seen (by several guests) putting the remaining food in containers. I've since heard that the chicken legs weren't cooked..I've also heard that there was no change behind the bar & people had to run a tab!We think this is a disgusting way to treat people who brought business to their pub.

Popped in for a beer having been unsuccessful in another local establishment. In fairness the pub had just opened, nobody else in & it would have benefitted from the fires being lit to add a bit of atmosphere & warmth but with any pub once you get a few people buzzing around the atmosphere changes. The Honiton Inn once you are inside is very large with various dining area's & interesting menus. We were greeted by a more than polite gentleman who we assumed to be one of the owners. The beer was well kept & enjoyable & during busy times this pub obviously comes into it's own. Nothing much to say really. I see the excellent reviews on here and have no reason to doubt that the food and decor etc etc etc are good. However , as a walker we visited the pub after climbing some monstrous hill and were looking forward to a quiet 1/2 hour in a country pub with a snack and a pint with our equally rest needing dogs. Quite a surprise then when we were told we couldn't use the beer garden because the dogs may frighten the chickens. As the pub serves food I wouldn't dream of taking my dogs inside but would expect to be welcomed into the beer garden. Disappointed to say the least

Luckily for us we stumbled across The Honiton Inn just down the road from the centre. On entering we were given a warm welcome by mine host. The pub was spotless clean and very well presented. After offering a drink which was brought to our table with a menu, we both ordered a jacket potato with prawn Mayo. After a short period the meal arrived, a good sized jacket potato filled to over flowing with prawns, Mayo and a lovely fresh salad to include beetroot, a really nice addition. The potato was one of the best we had tasted, light, flowery and well cooked. It may have been a simple meal but to us it was truly enjoyed and of a good quality. We would not hesitate to return and hope to do so in the near future. Thankyou

We found this pub by accident after attending a Land Rover experience down the road. One chap behind the bar who was very helpful & friendly. We enjoyed an excellent Ploughman's lunch and were then entertained by some of the locals who were having a good time. Very nice place and would recommend.

My wife and I visited the West Country for a short break whilst in England. Reading reviews on The Honiton Inn we decided to go there for a meal. The initial greeting was rather insipid to say the least but we decided to stay as we were hungry. We wish we hadn't bothered! The service was second rate only matched by over priced food with little or no flavour. My advice ... give this inn a wide berth!

Visited The Honiton Inn last Tuesday with friends for evening dinner. On entering the Inn you are struck by the immaculate decor and cleanliness! Very welcoming host. The food was absolutely fantastic - quality and presentation. Our night was made by a local gent who came in delivering fresh veg to the pub, we were able to purchase a wide variety of home grown veg. Great night, we will be back!

Called in on way back from a trip away - had no idea what to expect but found a lovely recently renovated little pub. Service was welcoming and friendly and the steaks we had were very nice and of a very good size and value. Will certainly call in again when in the area.

I work at Sidmouth International School and the Balfour Arms were happy to accommodate 3 large group bookings for us in September and October for our students. The feedback from the students was great and they really enjoyed themselves. Thanks so much to everyone at the Balfour Arms for your hospitality!

This is probably the worst dining experience I have ever had. Where do I start. We were a party of 7, 5 adults and 2 small children so I booked for 5.30. I booked a table for 7 and was shown to a table for 4. We ordered off the really tatty A4 paper menu along with 4 carvery's. We asked to see the wine menu we were told they had a Malbec, an Australian and a Zinfandel, no further details of the wine were known by the staff. The wine was then served in cocktail glasses!! really shoddy. 1 1/2 hours later our dinners arrived after asking several times if there was a problem with our order. We then had to get our own carvery's and waited another 10 mins for someone to actually serve us, so this meant that the people with other meals had virtually finished. We then had to wait for the 3 more lots of cutlery to arrive. The meat was a choice of gammon or turkey, both cold along with the luke warm small variety of veg swimming in grease. The other meals were not much nicer. Our table was left uncleared for another 1/2 hour while we waited for 2 ice creams for the children. The person in charge then decided to let us wait another 10 mins for 2 spoons for the ice creams. When she gave them to us and eventually decided to clear away our main course plates, she knocked over our drinks, she went to get a cloth and left the cloth on the table for us to clear up the drinks that she had spilt and at no time did she offer to replace them. When I went to pay I hadn't realised that the bill had already been paid by another member of our party and she tried to charge me for the whole amount again. If it wasn't for someone telling me that they had already paid the transaction would have gone through. This young lady then decided to argue with me when I let her know that our experience had not been a good one, and at no time was there any apology for the long wait, spilt drinks which she expected us to clear up, and awful food. Her attitude was absolutely dreadful an by no means professional. This used to be a nice busy place to eat and now it is absolutely atrocious. I wondered why it was so empty when we got there and now I know why. I should have read the other reviews before I booked, but just expected it to be really good as it was before. I have never written a review before but this was so bad I felt I had to let other people know.
