Worse lunch ever! Below average food, small portions, overpriced! I am not a massive eater but even for me the portions very pathetic. The rosemary and carrots soup was a small bowl of a buttery sauce served with half slice of bread!! The diet coke was watered down pepsy. Fish and chips very small too. Overall a disappointing experience.

Tapas night. The restaurant was lovely a bit loud, so difficult to hear each other. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The website menu was old. There wasn't a huge choice of vegetarian. The dishes although tapas were very small for the price. 2 thumb sized chicken gougons and tiny pot of alioli £6, half a cup of cauliflower floret with a very small amount of dressing £7, half a cup of almost scrag end chips £4.50, 5 tiny button garlic mushrooms £6.

The restaurant was lovely and the staff were friendly and welcoming. The food although tapas was very small for the cost. The total cost of the photo with half a glass of wine was £27 and the dishes were about half a cup size. The chips were mostly scrag ends couldn't taste the dressing on the cauliflower, the mushrooms were garlicky.

The good: Friendly and efficient staff, a clean and well-maintained venue, a lively atmosphere. Also, fairly-priced drinks. The bad: Teeny tiny “tapas” portions. The salad fitted in the palm of my hand. The garlic mushrooms numbered five. The frittata was actually two small slices, each no bigger than a thumb. The ugly: The prices. Most tapas dishes were £7 (for around two mouthfuls), some were £4-5. And. We both left hungry.

Lovley place, great atmosphere and friendly welcoming staff, good selection of wine and beer, also one of few places left in Honiton to have a sit down evening meal. Although my order came out wrong it was tasty, but I think at £27 was pricey for a steak with a hint of mushrooms a teaspoon of jus and an egg cup of chips

Visited for Sunday Lunch. Very nice setting and lovely food. Slowish service (an hour to get food from ordering). Loud music playing when we arrived but, on request, that was switched off (thank you). Big complaint, however, was barking dogs. Why are dogs allowed into an area where food is being served? The hygiene considerations are immense.

A great experience. Only one dinner, but I happily recommend going there if you need a good pub meal near Honiton. Actually, better than good. The food was delicious, carefully prepared and nicely presented. Each dish came with its own carefully prepared and original sides - no question of the same veggies for everyone! This was real good cooking, greatly enjoyed by all four of us. My dick main course was delicious, and my companions praised their mains too. Desserts were OK, but not as interesting or inventive. Staff were friendly and helpful, I couldn't ask for more. And the pub decor was nice too, traditional downstairs and more classy restaurant-like upstairs.

I never leave reviews but the food was so expensive and disappointing that I felt I needed to. I had the steak and chips - £27. The steak was chewy and the chips were bottom of the chip pan - I’m surprised they even served them. I decided to have dessert hoping they could redeem themselves - white chocolate parfait with fennel ice cream. The parfait was ok but the ice cream was tasteless. Would not come here for food again unfortunately. Service was lovely though - waitress and the guy at the bar :-)

Visited here on the way back from Torquay, after checking trip advisor we decided on having dinner here. Menu seemed OK and everyone was intrigued by the "holt" chips. 3 sirloin steaks and a fish and chips were ordered and we waited. As the restaurant wasn't busy, we seemed to wait sometime for the food to arrive. The steaks arrived all cooked to our liking but then 3 small bowls of what looked like burnt chips arrived. These buurnt offerings also accompanied the 2 small fillets for the fish and chips. Dear chef, please for the sake of others that follow us eating at The Holt, ditch this horrible idea and put properly chips on the menu. All we can taste are these burnt offerings.....

Picked chicken gouchons instead. 17yrold had fish and chips x2 adults the pork Food took a long time to arrive and each meal was extremely dry.. Daughter commented on worst chicken ever tasted. Fish was extremely dry. Pork very well presented but was like a cheap supermarket version I wouldn't be able to describe the meal as advertised on menu, however I can not claim it was awful. We ordered a drink for daughter but it didn't arrive until after we had finished. Plates were removed from table and conclusion we had finished even while daughter was eating peas. Meal for 4 cost £91 including drinks so was reasonable and we all ate majority. Downstairs bar wAs becoming busy as we left. Staff downstairs were distracted by locals but friendly enough. First time visiting The Holt with family this week and it did not disappoint! Hidden away at the bottom of town, this is a hidden gem that looks small on the outside but is actually a lovely and spacious place for a meal. The bar downstairs has a good range of beer, cider, wine and other drinks with a few spots to sit down and enjoy a drink with friends, with lots of interesting personality and decor. Upstairs the restaurant is a rustic yet stylish spot with lovely artwork on the walls and a great selection of food on offer (a small selection for vegans but delicious!). Food isn't necessarily the cheapest but as a small, family run business I'd rather pay a little more for the quality. The staff were all welcoming and smiling, despite the business just days before Christmas. A really wonderful experience and I can't wait to come back!

A Wednesday Battering Things didn’t start well as we were kept waiting for half an hour downstairs only to find the restaurant half empty when we were finally taken to our (reserved) table. Things deteriorated further as we perused the menu and realised that the most appetising sounding dishes were not available. Wednesday, Tapas night, could more accurately be named ‘deep fried in batter night’ as, unexpectedly, at least 75% of the dishes presented (including the whitebait and chicken wings) had a crunchy deep fried coating. Our spirits were battered. This was not tapas in any way that we have previously experienced. Having not eaten here on any other night of the week we are at a loss to explain how different our experience was to those reported in other reviews. I guess this will remain a mystery.

Four of us made the mistake of booking Sunday lunch at The Redwing Inn. We understood that the Inn is under new ownership and still “transitioning” – in preparation for “relaunching” later in the year. So we were prepared for some disruption – but not for chaos. It started with the wine. No, we couldn’t see their wine list – they didn’t have one. But the waitress said she could tell us what they had. Only, she couldn’t. She went off to check and returned with a scrap of paper with a few wines listed she could read out to us. We picked one, but she had to go off again to check the price. Problems continued with the menu. The main course offerings were beef, turkey or pork – all with Sunday roast trimmings. But nothing else. No fish alternative and no vegetarian option. The waitress – one of the young, personable but clueless staff (not their fault they needed training) – explained that they would have had a vegetarian offering, but their supplier of it had let them down. But, they could substitute extra vegetables for the meat. Two of our party chose the beef. Two of us were slightly luckier in choosing turkey. Four plates arrived quite promptly – with everything piled onto them. No serving dishes to enable us to select what trimmings we wanted – just a plateful each of mushy cauliflower cheese, red cabbage, watery green beans, baked potatoes, a whole carrot, a parsnip, a Yorkshire pudding and a rock-solid ball of stuffing. Two plate-loads topped off with thick wedges of beef and two with equally thick slices of turkey. All swimming in the same flavoured gravy. The turkey was just about edible for a bird of its age – the beef was as tough as the sole of a hiking boot. The request for horseradish sauce resulted in a fruitless search through all their fridges and cupboards. They did, though, eventually manage to find the jar of cranberry sauce. Clearing the plates, the waitress was careful not to ask if everything had been okay – studiously ignoring the pile of hacked at beef left on two of them. With hindsight, our mistake was in not walking out when we saw the menu or, failing that, when the food arrived. Fortunately, we will never have to return to The Redwing. The reality is that the new owners had no business opening the restaurant before it was ready to offer a proper service. With that attitude of mind, they deserve to have no business.

It's now almost been a year since my wife bought a ticket for the Balfour Arms Princess Ball for my daughter. The event was cancelled in November and then she was offered an exchange to another event, which was also cancelled. The owners have repeatedly posted on Facebook to say they would refund the tickets money to all of those eligible, and my wife has had to send frequent messages, and each time is told that it will happen by 'x' date, yet the refund never appears - the last one two weeks ago stated that all remaining refunds would definitely be completed within 4 days... The owners have now stopped replying. I always like to give people the benefit of the doubt and appreciate that the owners have suffered multiple setbacks which they state are out of their control. Unfortunately there comes a time when no amount of words or excuses can cover up the fact that this now feels like it has all been a big scam. I would recommend avoiding this business at all costs.

Came here for a sunday roast as a party of 4, not booked in advance and they accomodated us without batting an eyelid. Great service and absolutely incredible roast. One of the best pub roasts i've had the opportunity of eating. Pork, lamb, beef, gammon served moist with a lovely selection of veg, cauliflower cheese, a giant yorkshire pudding and lashings of gravy. Real "home cooked" vibe, this wasn't your typical deli sliced cold meats served with veg and gravy, you can tell this was cooked with care and everything was served piping hot. Top stuff, will definitely be coming here again.

Really nice find, a step up from other places around. Great food, cosy atmosphere and nice service. Had a fab beer garden too which would be great in nicer weather. Had the duck leg dish and the pork belly dish with a kids meal too. Duck was nicely cooked and the dauphinaise potatoes yummy. Pork belly again was fantastic. Wanted to try more! Would definitely recommend and would definately return if we were ever in the area again.
