The Hollies is a community cafe in the heart of Musselburgh. It offers very good food at a reasonable price. Apart from what is available on the menu there is always soup, a dish of the day and a sweet. The staff are very friendly and helpful and its the kind of place you can go to on your own without feeling out of place.

We happened to come across this hidden gem whilst out shopping. I think its an elderly day centre also but incorporates a cafe and second hand shop. Food was simple and fresh and the best black pudding I've tasted ever. Our daughter is vegan so asked could she have beans on toast, however we were told as it isn't on the menu we couldn't have it (something to do with costings?). We asked could we have a bean toastie then (same ingredients) and we allowed to order that 🤔 We were served by an elderly lady who was really friendly and it gave the experience a homely feel. Prices are good also.

We went to the Prestonpans shop today for a few baguettes before we started wrapping christmas presents. We always buy BLT baguettes and a Mexican burger or similar and a few scones. Apparently they don’t sell hot food anymore or so we were told and we ended up with cold bacon strips. It was disgusting. Never thought I’d say this about the filling station as I’ve always gave it as a recommendation and held it in high regard in the past. I cooked my own bacon to put on the baguettes in the end but at £4.80 a time I was rather disappointed. No scones left but I could accept that. I am not sure of the reasons for the no hot food thing, is it to do with a licence or what? Just doesn’t have the same feel to it either. Maybe it’s changed hands? Anyway, we are from further up the country and sadly we won’t make the trip again.

Oil and balsamic vinegar bottles just plonked on table should be served in dip bowls - I asked waiter if dish I wanted would be covered in a sauce - he convinced me it would’t but it was completed drowned in sauce - not happy!!
