Black Agnes Restaurant, Castle Hotel in East Lothian

Another excellent meal at the Black Agnes... The pub was packed and the service was still quick and cheerful. The prawn cocktails starter was devine and my hubby's full sizzling mixed grill saw him eat the lot! My lasagne reminds me of a proper homemade one. Too full for pudding! The prices are very reasonable as well. A real credit to Dunbar and we'll be seeing you again very soon.

The Food was delicious and very reasonable. We felt very welcome. The staff were so friendly. We would highly recommend The Black Agnus and will book again.

Went for meal Sunday afternoon lovely welcome great staff and meal first class will return again.my friend was disabled but was well catered for.

Nice food, good choice, reasonably priced!

We had an amazing dinner today at the Black Agnes. The menu had a great choice of pub style dishes. But so much better than any pub style dishes I’ve had in a long time. Everything was so definitely freshly home made and made from scratch. We had the garlic mushrooms and crispy calamari it was so delicious. I also had the chicken with black pudding and haggis. Not normally something I would normally order but I am so happy I did it was so good My hubby had the chicken sizzler and my daughter the mixed grill. Wow what a plate of food they got and again everything looked and tasted delicious. I am so happy that when I woke up this morning I seen someone’s post asking on fb where they should go and eat lunch. The Black Agnes had lots of recommendations. Well here is another one !! I could tell there was a real chef in the kitchen. Such delicious homemade food. Thank you and thank you Jackie for your amazing service with a smile. Great Dunbar hospitality xx

What a wee hidden gem 😁staff our amazing, friendly and go above and beyond big thank you to Jackie are server/host and Paul one of the Chefs who we were lucky enough to have a chat with before it got really busy the food is outstanding, very large portions of freshly piping hot food would 100% recommend The Black Agnes can't wait to go back👍we had the mushroom soup & crusty bread and haggis bon bons as starters followed by steak & ale pie the beef just melts in your mouth, the chicken stuffed with black pudding & haggis with peppercorn sauce is to die for also chicken goujons were fab unfortunately we had no room for dessert very reasonably priced definitely worth a visit 😋

Visited Dunbar after seeing it on saving lives at sea, lovely harbour area and small town, we went on a Sunday and decided to look for a Sunday lunch. We found the Black Agnes. The roast was excellent, well cooked and gravy to die for. Good price, nice restaurant, suggest you book as it was quite busy.

Wonderful food! I had chicken wrapped around black pudding and haggis and it was absolutely delicious. Warm and friendly service and the meal was great value. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Very friendly with very tasty food. The chef seems to love what he does which is honest pub grub cooked to perfection. We had fish and chips with local haddock and a light and crispy batter. Delicious.

My friends lasagne looked very good but my fish & chips was a disaster. Batter was fine on outside but soggy and unedable on the inside. When I mentioned this chef sent out message that it was crispy when it left the kitchen- he/she must have X- ray vision to see the inside!

The fish & chips looked fine but when I cut into the fish the inside of the batter was soggy and inedible although the fish was okay. When I complained I was told that the batter was crispy when it left the kitchen! 🤪 How the chef knew that from the outside goodness knows! I had to ask for a reduction to the bill and grudgingly £3 was taken off the £15. Won’t be going there again.

Great option for dinner in Dunbar although most likely need to book ahead. The lasagne was very tasty.

The food (fish and chips) was fine, not exceptional, but not terrible. Certainly not a gastropub, more a fish and chip shop. The batter was nice. The food was let down by the noise from the pub. It says it's a restaurant in a hotel, a better description is it's a small cafe attached to the side of a busy and very loud pub. If you're after great food check out The Crown and Kitchen in East Linton where I had the most amazing pork and mustard burger the previous evening.

Had a lovely meal here with my friend yesterday. Jackie was friendly and attentive. Food was delicious, can definitely recommend the Lasagne and garlic bread. Will definitely be back .

Anyone rating this place a 5 star clearly hasn’t been to a real gastropub where they serve decent food. All four meals we ordered between us tasted bland. Server was constantly overwhelmed and complaining throughout. Update: To claim I am a malicious account shows more about yourself as the owner. Perhaps acknowledging the negative review, and looking to improve would instead be a better approach.

My husband and I were out on a road trip and we stopped in Dunbar for some thing to eat wanted something more than coffee I had a sirloin steak with all the trimmings and husband had mixed grill all cooked to the way we asked food was delicious that was our first time there would definitely return staff very welcoming to

This cute gastro pub is a bright and cheerful place to have a meal. The service was great (they accommodated a last minute booking and the woman who served us was very friendly and kind), they catered to a severe peanut and shellfish allergy, they have a separate gluten free fryer, and they have good vegetarian options. The mac& cheese was probably the best I've ever had, and everyone at our table agreed that the food was hot, fresh, and absolutely delicious. Highly recommend.

A wonderful pub with the loveliest staff! I had the fish and chips which were excellent and a huge portion. They were also incredibly accommodating of my friend’s peanut and shellfish allergy, which is a huge plus!

Walked in on a Sunday tea time.Restaurant should have closed for the evening but nevertheless we was told no problem and was greeted very warmly and friendly. And the 3 of us sat down and had very enjoyable meal. Food was great and plentiful.

The food was hot and the staff was really friendly. The food generally lacked salt. The pastriy for the pie slightly smelled of burnt oil. However, the meat was succulent and nicely prepared. The prices are reasonable and the food is hearty. Considering the overall experience, I would visit again.

We walked in for lunch after a visit to Dunbar. Busy little restaurant so lucky to time it for a table. A great choice of good quality pub food. Chicken with black pudding and haggis was delicious.

After reading other reviews on here I was expecting a cozy spot for a tasty lunch, but unfortunately instead I got a drab room with mediocre food. Decor was grey and depressing. Food was not worth the price. I had the fish and chips - the batter was pale and the chips tasted like they were cooked from frozen. I asked for sauce and was given one sad solitary packet. Not worth £15 in the slightest.

Popped in for lunch when visiting Dunbar for the day. Ate in the bar as we had our dog. The barman ‘Chris’ wasn’t friendly at all to the point of being rude (not just to us, he barely acknowledged the wait staff ordering drinks) The restaurant waiting lady was lovely and offered to get water for the dog which was a nice touch. The food was tasty. What I’d describe as basic pub food definitely not gastropub standards but it was hearty enough and we ate it all. I’d say it was more expensive than it should be. However, I’d note the restaurant area looks much nicer and brighter to eat in and I think if you eat in there it would give a much better experience. The bar is dark and just a typical older pub. There is no phone reception and the wifi doesn’t work either. We were planning to stay a bit longer for a few drinks but the bar atmosphere is not inviting in any way (we definitely felt like those ‘once a year visitors’ we overheard people talking about) so we left after our food.

Great wee restaurant right on the corner of the high street. Food was delicious - haggis bonbons, tikka masala, sticky toffee were all spot on. The banana waffle was absolutely delicious. Service was quick and friendly. We'll definitely be back.

Excellent food and service for lunch today

Here at my favourite restaurant on the East Coast. Lentil soup to start, steak pie for my main. Service, food and atmosphere excellent as ever. Well worth a longer drive.

If i could give no stars i would. Walked in to ask about getting a table for 2 to be greeted with "We are shut" no hello or anything. Would maybe suggest you have a look at the way you talk to people. E.g "Hi, So sorry but we are unfortunately closing" might have been a better way to word it. 😐

We had a really great experience at the Black Agnes. We arrived on our way up to Dundee and had our little dog and two children with us. The staff were really friendly and accommodating with us. We sat on a table near the back and recieving excellent service. My wife had the stake and Ale Pie which was really good wholesome homemade food really well cooked. I had the scampi as I was in a seaside town. Again it was really well cooked and tasty. Our daughter's had sausage and chips and fish and chips of the kids menu. Food was reasonably priced. All the locals were really friendly too and made us feel welcome. We will definitely stop in again on our next visit to Scotland.

Visited here all the way from Washington DC. Definitely will be going back. Food is great and so are the owners!

Food and service was very good .I will not say too much this is a pub full of history when the sunshine shows its face visit Black Agnes is walking distance to the harbour and the castle .

The black Agnes is a charming restaurant I decided to try during our visit to Dunbar, I am glad we did, we throughly enjoy the food(inc a very fussy pre teen) whom Jackie was patient and accommodating to, the service is great, Jackie is lovely, a gorgeous place. Book ahead to avoid disappointment they are a popular choice for all the right reasons!

Myself and my boyfriend went to foxlake for the day and decided to eat here afterwards. The food was lovely and the service was very good. We had haggis balls for started and the peppercorn sauce was amazing! I kept some of it for my chips! The steak pie was delicious 😋 and the burger with cheese was really nice and served with plenty onion rings and chips! Good portion size for both meals. The homemade brownie was also very nice! Would definitely recommend if your visiting dunbar!

Had the veggie burger, Sunday roast pork and a pint of cider. Bill came to £30.

I googled this place as we had a trip to foxlake and the black Agnes came up foxlake to there was 7 minutes so glad we visited here. Visited from Edinburgh definitely be back

My wife and myself decided that the pub looked OK, so took a gamble. We were in for a surprise. The landlady was brilliant, very friendly and helpful. The food was excellent, the best pub grub I have ever had. When we left I shook the chef's hand, what a wonderful cook. If you're in the area, go in, you won't be disappointed. 5 STAR 🌟

Family run restaurant serving traditional good homemade food. The Black Agnes is named after a historical figure from Dunbar. The story is very interesting and is framed on the wall for those interested in reading it. International customers find their way into the restaurant yet others with Scottish accents seem to struggle. The entrance is through the pub’s main entrance. The door on the right is the pub and the door on the left is the restaurant. There is a small step down so be careful. There is another door on the corner which can be opened to allow wheelchair access. There is a small step up to get to the toilet. Fish and chips is my favourite and when Alan has time, the chips are homemade and delicious with a spot of vinegar. The restaurant is open from Thursday to Sunday from 12:00 midday during the winter months. There is no need to book but it can get really busy quickly therefore, it’s better to give them a call. The restaurant is simple but clean and value for money. Jackie and Alan are decent people who look after the vulnerable people frequenting their restaurant. They are a part of Dunbar’s caring community. I have no problem recommending the Black Agnes

Definitely a nice local place for a big dinner. The portion was very generous and I must admit that I struggled eating it all. You certainly get your moneys worth here! The fish and chips were perfectly crispy and fresh. Mac and cheese was good, but not as exciting. The bar next door was perhaps more "cozy" in it's decor, but I found the restaurant clean and with friendly staff.

Nice wee restaurant with friendly helpful staff fast efficient service. A limited menu but all that you could wish for in starter's and mains but very little sweets available. I had the battered fish which was well cooked and enjoyable. There was a good selection of drinks available, unfortunately only instant coffee available, maybe invest in a coffee machine even just a small tassimo machine would have made a difference. All in all a nice wee restaurant with excellent food.

Chose this restaurant because of its good reviews and wasn't disappointed. My wife treated me to a birthday dinner. Had the Black Agnes Trio...3 breasts of chicken in different sauces. My wife had the Cajun chicken. Both were good sized portions and delicious. Service was quick and friendly and the bill for 2 courses each and a drink was very reasonable. We are planning to return ...soon!
