The Hilltop Restaurant in Tonbridge and Malling

Lunch today at Hilltop was an outstanding experience - made even more pleasurable by the irrepressible manager Daren. A traditional English Sunday lunch served in comfortable, spacious - in places quirky - interconnecting dining rooms with attentive and personable staff keeping the buzzing guests fed and watered (or wined). Hilltops is an excellent restaurant, & has been decorated wonderfully, we had a wonderful afternoon with Daren, his family & staff who are brilliant at making you feel at home, plus they serve the best Sunday lunch ever, we have been visiting Hilltops for many years, there is always a large crowd of us & we have never been disappointed, the Sunday lunch is excellent which includes lovely crunchy roast potatoes, nothing is too much for Daren & his team and the price is very reasonable, a must if you love going out for a brilliant Sunday Lunch.

We had booked a table here for my parents 50th Anniversary. From walking in, Daren was a fantastic host. Checked with me to see if I was happy with the table. The bar nibbles went down very well! Food was spot on - delicious. We were not rushed. We then moved back to the fireplace which was a great place for Mum and Dad’s cake and made for some great pictures. Thank you Daren and Team! We will definitely be coming back.

We have written a lot of reviews and eaten in a lot of restaurants but I have to say this one must be near or at the top.All the reviews are so positive and rightly so. Darren is a fantastic host and being in a wheelchair he went out of his way to help me. The comfort and ambiance in the dining room was great, as were all the staff, so very friendly and helpful. The meal was excellent and was piping hot with an excellent menu choice. We had Sunday Roast choosing the beef which was gorgeous, the meal is a three course lunch, perhaps a two course alternative could be thought about in the future. You WILL not be disappointed if you book for a meal, mind you book well in advance! Thanks again to everyone at The Hilltop!

Darren is an amazing host, he goes above and beyond nothing is ever too much trouble. This was our second stay at Hilltop, we had a siblings dinner booked in the restaurant for 9 of us. It was a lovely sunny evening Darren suggested we sit in the garden with our aperitifs. They brought the menus out to us and called us in when our starters were ready. The food and service was excellent we chose a variety of dishes between our party and none disappointed. The trout pate was very good and my salmon was cooked perfectly. The honeycomb ice cream was great. The four poster bed was very comfortable and the room very quiet. Darren was there again in the morning taking our breakfast order. Full English was great, endless toast and freshly brewed coffee, excellent start to the day. We are already thinking of another get together there towards the end of the year.

We had not been here for a couple of years. The major change since our previous visit is that the old disco area has been opened up as a seating area for pre dining drinks which is a much larger and better area than the old reception area. We had a great evening with our friends, not a massive menu but something for everyone, the food as ever spot on and the service and friendliness from the staff and of course Darren top notch.

Brilliant restaurant a secret gem in Kent. Daren and the staff ensure you are comfortable, choose your table and even the lighting. The food is consistently good and great choice and wonderfully plated. Stay without being chased out and enjoy the experience.

Another fantastic Sunday lunch. The ambiance is great, the hosts are so attentive, the food is lovely and the service from everyone is great. This is a gem of a place, you must try it to really understand what a magical place it is. The decor is fantastic.

Since I was a lad this is and has been a lovely family to visit. Joan, Daren and Nat are so so lovely, Sadly another family “event” to go to for prob my most favourite Uncle. Last minute text “Can I get a room?” “Of course” say the team From my arrival to my perching on the bar for a couple of hours (only a couple mind) whilst I thought about my Uncle and my family. Thank you Daren for being with us. Thank you Nat for looking after my ridiculous drink concoctions last night. Always coming back. Its nearly home. Ok r the closest I’ll get. Back to Hope Cove. Having visited the restaurant/hotel for a wedding in November I wanted to return with friends for a meal. We chose Sunday Lunch and want disappointed. The over Darren, is a wonderful host, and the food and ambience is excellent. Definitely recommended.

Perfect restaurant for a Golden Wedding event. Daren the Host was welcoming and helpful from the time of our first visit to the end of the event. He always replied to emails and kept in contact. We returned for the third time to this restaurant always made to feel incredibly welcome by the host. The food is absolutely wonderful, great for special occasions would not hesitate to recommend.

One of the highlights of our anniversary get away was coming to the Hilltop. The setting of the venue is lovely, and the inside aesthetics and décor absolutely charming, especially after coming in from a wet and windy night. If you like a low lit, comfortable, spacious dining room with a fire, vibrant chatter, and delicious smells then this is for you. Through the dining room is a bar with a fire place you can sit around, and seating areas where you can have a quieter drink away from the hustle bustle of the main area. The star attraction is the delicious food, which was very reasonably priced considering how nice it was and how much you get of it, and the owner, Daren, who right from the moment we arrived could not do enough for us. We had never been before and he made sure we had the seats we wanted, facing where we wanted, and that we were comfortably tucked in with a drink. We had glitzy sprinkles for the table, he brought a lamp and then - as it was too bright - a candle, to set the ambience. He was gracious and charming and even lit the fire for us when we went into the other room for a drink. I've never seen such an attentive host. I really got the impression most of the people there were regulars and went often, probably due to the owner and the food! We had the soup and the prawn cocktail, the chicken, and delicious brownies, all of which were excellent. The other staff were swift and polite. Kinda wish we had stayed another night in Kent to eat there again. Will definitely be back!

The character and ambience are what help make a visit to Hilltop a memorable experience. The bar area has an amazing collection of framed black and white photos of major icons over the last few decades. The owner Darren is very welcoming and super friendly. The chef and his team do an amazing job. We were a party of 9 on a Saturday evening. Every table was booked but nothing was too much trouble. The 3 course set menu had a great selection of choices. Would happily visit again.

Had a 90th Birthday function for my mum, Rose at The Hilltops on Friday evening. What a lovely place. Darren was excellent during the planning process right thru to the conclusion. He catered for our group of 33 with so much care and attention. He is very personable man! Our guests commented on how good he and his team are! Food was wonderful. Darren provided celebration party balloons of our choice and made the our tables and bar look lovely. Mum was absolutely delighted with her evening and making her 90th birthday perfect. Thankyou. I am thrilled that the celebration of a “special” birthday yesterday, was made so fantastic by Daren and his highly professional team, in this lovely restaurant which is ideal for special occasions. The welcome and organisation of everything was great, with excellent attention to detail, which is rarely found nowadays. We were a large group of 13, and we were just able to order from the very varied menu on the night. All our orders came out together, and all the dishes were excellent. We all had a fabulous time, thank you so much to everyone.

We were at Hilltop last night with the family to celebrate the joint birthdays of myself and my daughter. We had such a lovely evening and the food was excellent, our Grandchildren enjoyed the adult menu and were made welcome as were we all. It was such a lovely gesture to bring out birthday cakes for us with no prior notice of the occasion, the whole evening was a delight and the staff were all great.

I celebrated my 70th here with friends and family and everything was absolutely marvellous. My expectations were high (because of the reviews), and my expectations were exceeded. Team Hilltop were amazing and I truly could not have wanted more. I also stayed here in the ‘chalet’ and it’s one of the most comfortable places I have been to in years. Very high spec.indeed and everything works. Well done Hilltop and I’m sure we will be back.

Yesterday fabulous Daren and his wonderful staff put on a fantastic teaparty for me and 35 of my family and friends for my 70th birthday. we decided to go here for evening meal. It was ok, but not something I would rave over. We went in August and to be fair maybe its due to the post covid times, and no a la carte menu, just a set 3 course albeit with 5 or 6 choices for each course at a price of £32.50, it was all a little ‘skimped’ and unfortunately on this occasion at least, not particularly tasty. Nothing stood out as notable for praise, nothing inedible either really it was all just ‘alright’Staff were very good, efficient and friendly.

It is appx 30 years that we’ve been coming to the Hilltop and not once have been disappointed by the ambience, food, hospitality and professionalism all with a friendly smile.Just returned from Sunday lunch and once again Darren has pulled out all the stops to ensure everyone’s safety during this horrid time. Our lunch was superb and all staff absolutely ‘on the ball’ .We chose the Hilltop to celebrate our Golden wedding a couple of years ago and will continue using our favourite restaurant. Having experienced the wonderful cuisine and atmosphere several times previously in the restaurant and although we only live 45 minutes away we decided to take advantage of the accommodation available for our anniversary weekend.We stayed in the newly refurbished garden cottage, which was furnished in the same delightfully eclectic fashion as the restaurant. The bed was super comfortable and the bathrooms were well appointed, the lounge area and kitchenette were a real bonus. Both our evening meal and Sunday lunch from the slimmed down but still plenty of choice set menus were up to the usual very high standard. The waiting staff were exceptional, attentive but not overly intrusive, knowledgeable about the food on offer and served us with effortless grace and friendliness.There were plenty of hand sanitisers throughout the venue. All staff were wearing visors and tables were placed to maintain social distancing. Some tables had unobtrusive plastic shields hanging from the ceiling, other tables were separated by plants and artfully placed ornaments. The distancing measures were so cleverly done it did not detract from the wonderful experience that is the Hilltop.Daren was his usual exceptional host, ensuring all guests felt “special”, included and all our wants and needs catered for even the ones we didn’t know we wanted.Due to Covid our plans for our anniversary had to change but Daren and his team made our weekend truly memorable and although we were only there for a little over 24 hours we felt like we had been on a proper holiday.Thank you Daren and your team.

We visited this "restaurant with rooms" for a late Sunday lunch last week. Living a 50 mile drive away (worth the journey) it made sense to stay the night so we could enjoy a few glasses of wine and a brandy or two to follow.Superb roast beef, served medium to rare as ordered. Lemon posset for pudding. Served with an excellent 2010 Bordeaux. I've long been a fan of the Hilltop for it's quirky decor, friendly welcome and excellent home cooked food. The new distancing rules mean the restaurant has improved further with decorative, planted room dividers. The reduced capacity creates a more reserved, higher end dining experience that makes the £30 menu look ridiculously good valu. Long may it continue!

Went for Sunday lunch 1st time since coronavirus well organised screens between tables and tables well spaced waiting staff all well masked and as usual very friendly. Food good limited menus all well cooked and good size portions. Daren as usual a good host. Looking forward to next visit.

Our 1st Sunday Lunch out since Lock down was lifted.I was a little apprehensive about going out, but I need not have worried. Daren and his team had everything so well organised. We was made to feel welcome as soon as we walked in. All tables were well spaced, and Daren and his team were all wearing full face visors, all precautions had been taken, even down to the menu's which were disposed of after each use.The menu was a little smaller than normal but non the less delicious, of course Sunday Roast was on the menu, which we enjoyed and the Sea Bream went down well with my 2 nephews.We will definitely be going back very soon.Congratulations to you all.

Never been here before. The Hilltop was recommended by two un-connected friends. Normally I certainly would not consider taking others to somewhere I'd never tried myself. I read other reviews on TripAdvisor and emailed The Hilltop with my reservation details. First attempt, a Sunday, nothing available, 2nd attempt, a Saturday, still nothing. 3rd time, a Friday, lucky. Booked a table for six people for 7pm. For a number of reasons I enquired of a young lady, Natalie, if The Hilltop had a crémant de bourgogne in their cellars. They hadn't but Natalie said that they gave spoken about stocking some. I left it there, didn't want to come across as needy and challenging customer.The Hilltop surpassed my expectations. From the initial greeting to having our final coffee the experience was exceptional. The cosy bar, comfortable restaurant, the ambiance, attitude of all the staff and of course the food but one thing particularly impressed me was that Natalie had procured a bottle of crémant de bourgogne and produced it so we could toast our anniversary and birthdays. This was the icing on the beautifully presented cake that is The Hilltop. Thank you Natalie and all at The Hilltop and congratulations on being voted one of the top restaurants in Kent. Very well deserved. I shall be booking again, a lot more in advance next time, and I would recommend The Hilltop to any if my friends and family.

We booked a 4pm table which allowed for a lazy Sunday morning start with time for a country walk before sitting down to a late lunch. Such a good idea to continue serving into the late afternoon.Darren runs the show, as ever. We started with an astonishly good Chapel Down Rose sparkling wine in the bar with excellent olives. Cote in nearby Sevenoaks would have stung us for £15. The Hilltop offers this as part of their three course lunch experience. The choice of an English sparkling wine was the right one - arguably superior to many "grandes marques" French Champagnes. English too!We all opted for the pate as starter - served with an interesting, tangy salsa. All good.The roasts came with generous portions of meat (three beef, one pork - all excellent). Extra gravy on the side was a welcome touch.We chose the St. Emillion to accompany the meal. For £35 i was expecting an average Claret, so we were very pleasantly surprised to discover this 2014 Grand Cru wine. It was so good we had a second bottle. Highly recommended and again, astonishing value for money.Desserts were excellent, although we were pretty well full and happy to relax with the superb wine.All in all a perfect end to a family Sunday. Thank you!

Having read the reviews prior to visiting I was sceptical that it was as good as the reviews stated... It turns out it was even better! From the minute you walk in you are looked after throughout and made to feel welcome by the whole team. The restaurant itself feels intimate and warm and you sort of feel as if you're eating in the comfort of your own home as opposed to a restaurant. The food itself was delicious... The beef was honestly one of the nicest pieces of beef I've ever been served and the sticky toffee pudding was to die for. I really didn't expect this place to be as good as it was and I'm just pleased I got to enjoy a special evening with my family here. We will definitely be returning soon and would thoroughly recommend The Hilltop to anyone.

Longfield WI went to the Hilltop for our yearly meal. We have never been disappointed. Darren is the most exquisite host you could ask for. All the team are so helpful nothing is too much trouble. The food is fabulous. We cannot fault this restaurant. Whenever we want somewhere special to go for a meal it is always THE HILLTOP.. FAB U LOUS

The atmosphere was very romantic, with single red roses in vases in the entrance area and huge letters spelling out LOVE in the reception hall. We had mixed starters followed by fillet steak and to finish my husband had the home made meringues with plums and ice cream. I was too full for a pudding. We had an enjoyable evening and left stuffed!

Unimpressive. Goats cheese starter had a tiny slice of goats cheese, lots of green leaves with a little beetroot and two miniscule pieces of walnut. Salmon main course had only one tiny new potato which would fit into a teaspoon. Braised beef main course was served with only one carrot. We will not be returning.

Very special place, has a unique charm. Alway warm and welcoming, staff are amazing always make you feel special. Daren and his family have created a wonderful restaurant/hotelMenu to suit all tastes, and the mixed starter is alway a favourite. You will not be disappointed if you visit here.

I'm told the 'Ladies' has to be seen to be believed!Next the warmth of the welcome from the host Darren and his team, then the great selection of drinks at the bar and then the extensive but very reaonably priced menu.Then the candle lit atmosphere of the restaurant and the quality of the food and finally the excellent and very well priced wine listWhat's not to like!!Can't fault it

Went there for our clubs Christmas lunch meal with 90 people. Decorations looked amazing. Daren was very welcoming . Lovely three course meal. Staff were very friendly helpful and very obliging. Loved this place so much we are having our Christmas club lunch here again this year. Meal was very reasonably priced. Would highly recommend.

Four of us stayed recently near Brands Hatch and looked for restaurants nearby not knowing the area. By a stroke of good luck we looked up The Hilltop and booked there for a Saturday night. The decor is eccentric to say the least with movie posters, religious icons, original pictures, garish decor, a feast for the eyes and truly original. There was a set menu of 3 courses for around £29 + 10% service charge. There was a very good selection of starters, main courses and dessert ranging from braised beef, pork belly, which two of our group have a said it was probably the best they have ever had, sea bream, vegetarian options and interesting desserts. The wine list was extensive and reasonably priced - we had an excellent Italian red for £24. However, I did think they should also offer a two course menu as some people do not want three courses, but this is a minor point.

The Hilltop restaurant had been recommended, and it lived up to all expectation. Darren was a perfect host, making us all feel very welcome. The setting was beautiful and the food was plentiful. Looking forward to returning in the new year.

Our local ARA club went to the Hilltop for our Christmas Luncheon. What an amazing place. The restaurant had been decorated beautifully. Daren as always took control of the situation and gave us a wonderful meal. The staff were very friendly, helpful and willing to help out. Everyone enjoyed themselves. Would definitely recommend and will also be going back. The Hilltop is definitely not to be missed. We went for the set meal and was not expensive.

The food is above amazing and Darren is a great host. The staff are lovely and make you feel special.

Restaurant very good food and pleasant atmosphere. Quirky decorations with flowers and pictures on the wall. Easy access for the disabled and a clean toilet. Staff very friendly. Comfortable seats.

As a family we have used the Hilltop to celebrate many family occasions ,why great menu simple extremanly well cooked food beautifully presented food .Ambieiance is electic with Darren the perfect host .I just love the enterance always lovely floral displays and classic music carefully selected .my 15 year old grandson came to stay when ask where he would like to visit he says 'dinner at the Hilltop ' such good taste .

Great birthday lunch here for friends , just love this place. Great food, staff and ambience in abundance.

Came as part of a large family meal /event, and the food was gorgeous - very well cooked and presented. The staff and service were also excellent, and the proprietor friendly and very 'hands-on'.
