The Highwayman in King's Lynn and West Norfolk

Went for a Valentines meal with my partner. Drinks taken promptly, and delivered quickly. But then was not asked if we were ready to order food. We had waited 15/20 minutes at this point, and 2 tables who had arrived just shortly after us had had a food order and food delivered. We were in the corner out of the way, so put our menus at the edge of the table to indicate we were ready for a food order. Still nothing. We waited 30 minutes in total, with the 2 tables who had arrived after us, finishing their food, before someone came near our table when clearing away another tables plates, in which I called them over to ask if we could order our food. Not sure how much longer we would have been waiting to order our food if I didn’t call a waitress over. Starters were fine, but the taco was only just lukewarm. Mains tasted nice, but sticky toffee pudding was underwhelming. All in all, mediocre food and bad service. Felt forgotten about.

The location is idyllic, just a short stroll from the stunning Brancaster beach. The hotel itself is beautifully appointed, with stylish and comfortable rooms. The food was absolutely outstanding. We enjoyed delicious meals in the restaurant, with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The service was impeccable, with friendly and attentive staff. Overall, our stay at The Ship Hotel was excellent.

As of January 1st they don’t accept card, so basically unusable to a lot of people in the modern age

Don't believe the web site opening times. We were eating in the restaurant and the fish and chips were lovely and crisp but the waitress seemed to be running on a short fuse. She questioned if I had ordered correctly when I asked the mushy peas to be changed for garden peas, a small issue but I know what I ordered and don't want to be questioned when served the wrong food. There was a minor kerfuffle when the waitress started telling arriving customers they were closing at 18:45 and a disagreement then resulted with the customer being asked to leave (from what i heard the customer didn't do much wrong) which soured the atmosphere. The misunderstanding arose from the website stating closing time was 19:00, they closed at 18:45 (close sign went up at 18:30).

Very helpful staff. Had sausages in a bap but the sausages were poor quality. Hot drinks and ice cream very good. Don’t allow dogs so had to have a takeaway.
