A little disappointed with the meal. It looked impressive with an extremely large Yorkshire pudding and lots of veg but very little meat. My husband got 2 small thin slices of beef. I had the 3 meat which was a mouth full of each. When you pay £20 for a roast dinner you expect to get some roast. Some items of veg were also missing. Perhaps if the cut down on the vegetables and put more meat on the plate. We could hear the table next to us saying the same

I was looking for a venue that could accommodate a business meeting - 8 people for 4 hours. The Highlander was recommended so we found ourselves in the Green Room. It was fab - and here is why. 1.The host, Rob, was fast in replying to questions and really helpful. 2.The venue is lovely overall and well worth a visit 3.The Green room is fab. Private, a good size and could easily accommodate more than the 7 of us who attended. 4.The attention to detail - small things like water on the table, headed notepaper and pens, TV with HDMI connection ready to use 5.Refreshments were super. Coffee and pastry on arrival, coffee and cookie a bit later and finished off with coffee and orange juice plus freshly made sandwiches with fries for a great light lunch. Everyone thought it was a smashing venue and is highly recommended. And, while you need talk to the host about what you need, I thought it was superb value for money.

Food ranges from ok to good. Better than a normal pub but not good enough to be called a gastropub. Asked to sit where there were no young children. The next 2 families with noisy children were sat next to us. Lasagne was warm not hot and a bit bland. Soup of the day was good but we make better soup at home!

Had food there on Friday 23rd August 24, food was ok nothing special and the place just lacks atmosphere. 2nd time I've been since it opened and although nice inside there's just something about the place which does not wow me. I know it's tough being in a remote location but I think they need to be more creative with their menus.

We visited for the first time yesterday. It has been refurbished beautifully and has a warm and welcoming vibe. Always good to see dogs are welcome too. We all enjoyed our meals, good sized portions, cooked nicely. The staff were very helpful and pleasant and we didn't have to wait a long time for service even though it was busy. I would suggest making the nearer parking spaces a disabled priority so that those not as steady on their feet can be nearer the door. The steps in were a problem for my mum. Maybe signage to guide peoole around to the rear doors for easier access would be beneficial. All that said, we enjoyed our visit and now we know what to expect will adivse of needing easy access and table on our next visit when we book online. Lovely to see this pub that ive driven past for years looking so good and being used again

Went with family. Ambience good. Not rushed but the servers can be more attentive. Only bothered about offering more drinks. All food except the rib eye steak was real good. The gravy and sauces were good too, which is a mark of a good chef. Steaks were of poor quality. Chewie and smelt of fuel. For £29, not value for money at all. When paying the bill, mentioned about it but response was mundane. Need to pull your socks up to be successful in long term.

Had high expectations here after hearing good things. Couldn’t be further away from the truth. The lasagne was not edible the cheese was not melted at all. The steak I got was medium but even with a steak knife I could not cut through it, the prawns were the driest thing ever and hope I don’t get food poisoning from them. Even after leaving most of my dish my wife leaving all of hers they did not even ask how the food was! The lady serving even asked when I went to pay if you would like to leave a tip press here. No words. Won’t be returning.

Nicely refurbished but lighting requires some attention as v bright spotlights are uncomfortable in places (felt like an interrogation so had to move). This was Sunday, my son enjoyed the ham hock tureen, burger and sticky toffee pud. My wife and I had the roast lamb, we ordered some seasonal veg as no greens served with it. Ohhhh Dear, the lamb was chewy, v poor, the roast pots were tasteless, the creme swede was ordinary boiled and mashed. The green veg we ordered extra was almost raw, and definitely beyond al dente. Not cheap and very disappointing.

I hadn't been to The Highlander for a long time. It recently reopened after a four year closure and full refurbishment. I only dropped in for a (very good) coffee, but everything looked great and the service was too. Admittedly, it was very quiet, being mid Friday afternoon. There are big plans to develop the outbuildings further, for private functions, and to open letting bedrooms upstairs. There's a big car park behind the pub, which I don't remember being there in the past. Well worth a visit I think.

Booked in for Sunday lunch. The food was nicely cooked with a good selection of vegetables. However, there was very little beef with the meal and therefore not good value for money at £18.95. I did bring this to the attention of the manager who took the complaint on board and will put this right in the future. He applied a discount to the final bill. I would be happy to return as the quality of food was good as was the decor.

07/01/24 Came here for a meal with family this afternoon for Sunday lunch, as I had heard good things since it reopened. The inside has been refurbished to a high standard. It's a gastro type establishment, so isn't really somewhere you would go for just a drink. The service was attentive, and plenty of waiting staff were on duty. We all enjoyed our Sunday roasts; which were perfectly cooked and portioned. The sirloin of beef was delicious! The only minor blips to the experience were that they forgot about one of the desserts we ordered, so my mum was sat waiting for my dad's to be brought out, and we had to chase it down. The second blip was that the two espresso coffees we ordered were not really espresso. It would be good if the company sent the staff on a training course to learn how to pull good espresso shots, as the coffee was a bit of a let down. Overall, the quality of the food, the ambiance, the interior and service was very good and we will definitely go back again. A few things mentioned above that can be improved upon, but all in all, a lovely meal.

I went all out & chose the Apple, Pear & Plum crumble, with custard. It was absolutely delicious, if there was any room for change, reduced pudding size & price would maybe be my only quibble. First time visit on a Friday night. The service was good but could be more friendly and inviting. It was all a bit matter of fact! A smile would help! Food was mainly traditional pub food, which would have been lovely but wasn't hot enough for me. I think it had been standing waiting for the hot chips to be added... It's a big, airy place but for me, it still lacked atmosphere even though it is well decorated. Overall a pleasant experience but not wowed by it.

A disappointing first visit. I had the "Pie of the day" , which was very obviously a bought in, mass produced pie. OK to eat, but not what I expected when they have their own kitchen. For dessert, Crumble of the day was on the menu. On asking, I was told it was apple, and I chose to have it with clotted cream. On arrival, it soon became apparent it was Plum Crumble and it was served with double cream, not Clotted. I hope the teething problems can be sorted out soon as it is one of the nearest pubs to where I live!

I cannot rate this place highly enough for their amazing hospitality. My mother and I turned up here one evening, 15 minutes before their closing time, we were soaking wet and covered in mud as we had just come off the Hadrians wall path and it had been raining. We were greeted instantly by a very pleasant young lady (name may have been Jess but don’t fully remember as it was a few months back) who politely explained it was close to closing time but then proceeded to grab us a couple of menus and inform the kitchen team that that we wanted to order. We were most grateful. We had to quickly decide what to order but then the food came quickly and it was great quality. They also managed to find us a room to stay in at short notice. They really saved our bacon that day. Excellent. Thank you. The fact that I’m posting this a little while should reflect how much we appreciated this!
