Had food there on Friday 23rd August 24, food was ok nothing special and the place just lacks atmosphere. 2nd time I've been since it opened and although nice inside there's just something about the place which does not wow me. I know it's tough being in a remote location but I think they need to be more creative with their menus.

We visited for the first time yesterday. It has been refurbished beautifully and has a warm and welcoming vibe. Always good to see dogs are welcome too. We all enjoyed our meals, good sized portions, cooked nicely. The staff were very helpful and pleasant and we didn't have to wait a long time for service even though it was busy. I would suggest making the nearer parking spaces a disabled priority so that those not as steady on their feet can be nearer the door. The steps in were a problem for my mum. Maybe signage to guide peoole around to the rear doors for easier access would be beneficial. All that said, we enjoyed our visit and now we know what to expect will adivse of needing easy access and table on our next visit when we book online. Lovely to see this pub that ive driven past for years looking so good and being used again

Went with family. Ambience good. Not rushed but the servers can be more attentive. Only bothered about offering more drinks. All food except the rib eye steak was real good. The gravy and sauces were good too, which is a mark of a good chef. Steaks were of poor quality. Chewie and smelt of fuel. For £29, not value for money at all. When paying the bill, mentioned about it but response was mundane. Need to pull your socks up to be successful in long term.

Had high expectations here after hearing good things. Couldn’t be further away from the truth. The lasagne was not edible the cheese was not melted at all. The steak I got was medium but even with a steak knife I could not cut through it, the prawns were the driest thing ever and hope I don’t get food poisoning from them. Even after leaving most of my dish my wife leaving all of hers they did not even ask how the food was! The lady serving even asked when I went to pay if you would like to leave a tip press here. No words. Won’t be returning.

Nicely refurbished but lighting requires some attention as v bright spotlights are uncomfortable in places (felt like an interrogation so had to move). This was Sunday, my son enjoyed the ham hock tureen, burger and sticky toffee pud. My wife and I had the roast lamb, we ordered some seasonal veg as no greens served with it. Ohhhh Dear, the lamb was chewy, v poor, the roast pots were tasteless, the creme swede was ordinary boiled and mashed. The green veg we ordered extra was almost raw, and definitely beyond al dente. Not cheap and very disappointing.

I hadn't been to The Highlander for a long time. It recently reopened after a four year closure and full refurbishment. I only dropped in for a (very good) coffee, but everything looked great and the service was too. Admittedly, it was very quiet, being mid Friday afternoon. There are big plans to develop the outbuildings further, for private functions, and to open letting bedrooms upstairs. There's a big car park behind the pub, which I don't remember being there in the past. Well worth a visit I think.

07/01/24 Came here for a meal with family this afternoon for Sunday lunch, as I had heard good things since it reopened. The inside has been refurbished to a high standard. It's a gastro type establishment, so isn't really somewhere you would go for just a drink. The service was attentive, and plenty of waiting staff were on duty. We all enjoyed our Sunday roasts; which were perfectly cooked and portioned. The sirloin of beef was delicious! The only minor blips to the experience were that they forgot about one of the desserts we ordered, so my mum was sat waiting for my dad's to be brought out, and we had to chase it down. The second blip was that the two espresso coffees we ordered were not really espresso. It would be good if the company sent the staff on a training course to learn how to pull good espresso shots, as the coffee was a bit of a let down. Overall, the quality of the food, the ambiance, the interior and service was very good and we will definitely go back again. A few things mentioned above that can be improved upon, but all in all, a lovely meal.

A disappointing first visit. I had the "Pie of the day" , which was very obviously a bought in, mass produced pie. OK to eat, but not what I expected when they have their own kitchen. For dessert, Crumble of the day was on the menu. On asking, I was told it was apple, and I chose to have it with clotted cream. On arrival, it soon became apparent it was Plum Crumble and it was served with double cream, not Clotted. I hope the teething problems can be sorted out soon as it is one of the nearest pubs to where I live!

Service very slow at the bar service at table was slow staff seemed friendly but they weren't confident in what they were doing. I had goats cheese tart which I enjoyed the soup was fine . The dinner was no different to their Sunday dinner they serve. No parsnips frozen stuffing balls frozen roast potatoes. The puddings one of our chocolate cakes were heated and the other one cold. I had the trifle very disappointed tasteless and mostly sponge with a thin layer of custard and synthetic cream topped with mini smarties. The Xmas pudding was very nice. Half way through the meal the son found a long hair in his dinner we did complain but with no satisfaction. We were made to feel it was our fault. Manager was too busy to speak to us. We often pop in for food. But we definitely won't be back. Staff could do with customer care training in how to handle complaints. Shame you have to pay in advance no refund offered for the meal.

Went for a Stargazing weekend. Positives: excellent food and accommodation. Location is ideal for walking Hadrian's wall/ visiting Sycamore Gap. Brilliant little microbrewery and tap room. Bar staff very friendly and knowledgeable. Negatives: very awkward interaction with one restaurant waitress on the first evening. Seen to the table but only 3 menus for 4 of us. She said she would get one but didn't. My wife went up to get it after some time only for the waitress to say " I can get that for you"! A bit late. Followed by no-one coming to take a drink or food order for over 20 minutes so we had to attract her attention. She did not apologise for the delay butclaimed to have been busy. We had watched her setting up tables for breakfast instead yet this was around 7.40 pm. When challenged on this she became aggressive rather than apologetic. She took the order but when asked for a jug of water, she ignored the request and stormed off. (the water did arrive, she just failed to acknowledge the request. This put our group at unease as we had 2 more breakfast and 1 dinner service to go! This may seem petty but it reaput a dampener on the weekend. Her customer service skills were non existent. All the other servers were polite, frank attentive. The bar seems to discourage later evening drinks as all the chairs/stools get put up on the tables as people leave, well before last orders. After coming in from the stargazing event around 10pm on a Sunday night, we weren't even sure that the bar was open. It was and the team were friendly but it just wasn't a welcoming environment to see the place ready for hoovering! Finally, the stargazing event was badly organised. There was no information at check in. We got most info from one of the waitresses and even then the directions weren't clear. We have been to an event down south before which had better presented information. The actual set up is very good with a great guest speaker. Unfortunately for us, rain and cloud stopped us from using the telescopes outside. The planetarium was an excellent facility. It is a shame that these issues affected what promised to be a great visit to a lovely pub.
