We were in Rothbury to have the Sunday Carvery ,which was excellent! (Will definitely come back).and also to suss out places to have an alcoholic drink in the evening. We had already found where to have a coffee and scone the day before. My husband and myself were staying in Amble for a weeks holiday. Myself and eight friends are staying in Rothbury the beginning of September. The ambience and staff were fantastic in the Newcastle House Hotel.Thank you to Kelly for all the information regarding my return visit in September.Very much appreciated.

We visited the area from the South. Went to their quiz night, which was busy and great fun. It’s a little dated in the pub (area we sat) but it’s a proper pub, and no doubt old so that’s just a personal taste point. We didn’t eat so can’t comment on the food, although each table got some free wedge chips during the quiz which was a kind gesture. Glad we went. Thanks for having us.

This is the fourth time we have been to the new Steak House 1687 at the Newcastle House in Rothbury and we have been very happy every time. We brought my Dutch relatives here a couple of weeks ago and they were impressed with the food and atmosphere! We have also been here numerous times for Sunday lunch and it’s our favourite place to eat a traditional Sunday roast (plus if you’re not really a fan of Sunday roasts there are plenty of other options; I’m a big fan of the steak pie which is to die for.) My partner and I ate here this evening and as usual the food and service were excellent. We both had h the sirloin steak with fries, my partner had veg and I had salad. My partner also opted to have a green peppercorn sauce which he loved. The veg served here is seasonal. My salad was really well-presented, with peppers and olives as well as tomatoes and cucumber etc. very fresh and went perfectly with the steak and fries. Worth noting, the beef is locally reared and it shows. The flavour is fantastic. We actually live on a local red tractor certified farm, grass fed heritage breed beef and organic lamb so we are used to great steak, so I’m quite fussy about beef when eating out and on top of that I’m extremely picky about eating steak in a restaurant, I often send steak back for various reasons; but the Newcastle House’s steak definitely gets my seal of approval both in terms of flavour and cooked exactly to how you want it. It is cooked on a grill which gives it even more flavour. Absolutely nothing to grumble about whatever. The service has to be mentioned as well; our server Kelly made us feel very welcome and at home, very attentive, extremely friendly and absolutely lovely. A typical example of the hospitality you find in Northumberland. We will definitely be returning here regularly and have already been recommending to friends. Five stars and would give ten if there was the option.

we went here because we heard good things. when we arrived we were told to go through for our meat for sunday lunch when we got there the turkey was pink the pork was full of soft fat all way through no beef and tiny bit of gammon. one of us refused the meat and asked for his money back. we were nearly finished our food when they scans lit with small plate of vegetables well i say vegetables. dried up parsnip spoonful if turnip and carrots red cabbage and few leaves. no gravy no mash. we then had to ask for mash potatoes which came one small bowl between 3 of us. it was disgusting and when we tried to explain we’re told well if you’d booked it would have been better!!!! also turkey is cooked through i said but it’s pink!! since being home all 3 of us have never been off toilet. absolutely disgusted would def avoid this place.

Visited yesterday for a light lunch. Staff accommodating as we didn’t have a booking but squeezed us into a table reserved for later in the day as long as we agreed to vacate by a certain time. Covid measures in place. Room to the left looked nice but we were directed to a table in the bar which looked a bit tired. We didn’t want Sunday lunch as we had eaten a large breakfast so opted for sandwiches. Went for prawn Marie rose and garlic mayo sandwiches with potato skins on the side. Skins were nice. Sandwiches presented well with salad garnish and coleslaw but jeez the amount of mayo on the sandwiches made us feel ill. Thick butter and mayo oozing out the sides. Sandwiches promised seeded bread but the bread provided was very plain. Had to scrape the filling and butter off my daughters sandwich picking out the bits of chicken and remaking the sandwich. The chicken itself was good- it seemed like actual roast chicken. Prawn Marie rose again just too much dressing and perhaps not enough prawns. Felt quite sick afterward. Service was friendly, I saw the carvery and a burger going past which looked good. Wished I’d gone for the roast!

We returned to Newcastle House today having enjoyed an excellent lunch last time we visited. Not sure what’s happened but today’s lunch fell way short of what we had expected based on our previous visit. Vegetarian burger was inedible, to the credit of the staff it was changed without a fuss and free of charge to a better vegetarian noodle dish and apologies were given. Chicken breast burger (£10) was a very small piece of ‘coated’ chicken not great, the onion rings and chips on the side were good. Sausage and mash (£9.50) was just that, a mound of mash potato, 2 small sausages and a ramekin of baked beans on the side - looked like a large portion of something from a basic kids menu ! The addition of some gravy and maybe onions would have much improved this offering. Perhaps we made poor choices from the menu this time. I hope today was a blip and we can enjoy the standard we did last time in the future. I would have given 2.5 stars if that was an option it wasn’t ‘poor’ across the board but was below ‘average’ today. We will be checking the reviews carefully before venturing back

Trying to think of something to do for the day, we are regular visitors to Rothbury and nearby Cragside but this was our first visit to Newcastle House for lunch. Pleased that we arrived early and were fortunate to be able to get a table. Each of the five roast joints available looked succulent and tasty. We both chose lamb which was nicely cooked, blushing but not running. The best way to describe the overall experience would be rustic, in no way said as a criticism but can't be described as refined in it's presentation. That said, we both enjoyed our meal and are sure that we will be back, just not quite as quickly as we will to other venues. Nice food, good value and local produce which is cooked in house.

We had lunch there today, we didn’t want a big meal as we are out tonight. Two had sandwiches lovely cheddar cheese and tasty bread but no butter or spread on the bread making the sandwich rather dry. I had the ploughman’s which parts were very good, the cheese, great pickled onions and tasty piccalilli. But the parts that weren’t so good was the bread which was dry and certainly not crusty and the cold roast beef which was dry and over cooked. But the cooked dishes coming out of the kitchen looked really good and I would go back to try the cooked dishes

The meat was roasted to perfection, the vegetables were mashed right and cooked enough so they still had a little bite. After travelling for most of the day we went here for dinner our first night in the area on holiday. Quite a limited menu and a fairly long wait for the food to arrive once we had ordered. One member of the party asked for a gammon steak which was awful. We were staying in a B&B; locally and were looking for a local place for dinner. The pub we set out to was closed off to a private function - good news as this meant we discovered the restaurant at Newcastle House! It looked like a pub, and I guess in some ways it is, but they have a separate dining area within a lively, but not too noisy bar area. The first night's meal was very good - generous portions and an excellent pork medallion dish and a beef sizzler ordered by my friend. Wine selection was good and all wines sampled were very nice. The waitress who served us on the first night is a credit to the establishment, so friendly and helpful. We went back for a second night, and sat next to a group of 4 who had come for another meal as well. I had beef short ribs this time and friend had the salmon burger. The prices for the quality, portions and service were outstanding. I hope this restaurant does well, it deserves to. Thank you for two very enjoyable dining experiences.

My husband had a steak which was cooked to perfection medium rare and my father had the asian short ribs which he very much enjoyed. Portions are all very generous. Desserts looked inviting so despite being full we ordered a home made blueberry cheese cake to share which did not disappoint! Overall a lovely meal with friendly and efficient service.

If you're wanting a meal at 4.30pm in the centre of Rothbury, the Newcastle House is pretty much your only option. Other neighbouring establishments typically don't serve between 3 and 6pm, so we were quite relieved to find the Newcastle offering meals at that time in the afternoon. The initial impression was that the Newcastle is very much an establishment for the locals, with a neutral 'feel' to the place, albeit a warm welcome from the friendly and helpful staff.

We both plumped for a tuna bagette which comes with hand cut chips and salad, well worth the six pounds. Washed down with a pint of orange and water as I was driving. The lovely Hannah tells me that they often have themed nights like wine tasting or a Thai food night. They also have a ladies only night for charitable purposes. This hotel is a perfect location for hikers or mountain bike riders with space to keep bicycles safe. They have various types of rooms available and a function room upstairs suitable for about thirty people. It is also only one mile away from the famous Cragside created by lord Armstrong in Victorian times. A good day out

My friends and I called in one busy Thursday evening for the special tapas menu, it was absolutely delicious, there was so much choice and great value for money, The service was quick and served with a smile. The restaurant and lounge were busy so you will need to book ahead, A definite must and I would highly recommend.

Couldn't resist popping in for lunch when visiting Rothbury. Without doubt the best food in the area and great value for money.

We decided to take a business lunch here on the busiest day of the winter. Can not fault this place at all. On a midweek winters afternoon you do not expect a full lounge and restaurant. But the one member of bar staff and one chef did a fantastic job, producing beautiful, quality food and service with a smile.

Special Valentine's menu was available for nights other than just the 14th. We chose a night with live music too. As well as the normal menu, the Newcy House regularly puts on special event menus. The food is excellent and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. Especially with pre-booked special menus, meals are very good value. We eat here regularly and always enjoy our visits.

Last week we ordered toasties for lunch in Newcastle House Hotel Lounge Restaurant. After waiting for 45 minutes I asked the waitress how much longer we would have to wait and was told another 15 minutes. Not acceptable, so we left. After all to make 2 toasties is not that difficult, surely.

Me and my partner took our labrador here to explore the greatness that is norrhumberland. When we got to the hotel we were slightly early so asked if we could check in... to which we were able. Our room was small but perfect for what we needed it for. A king sized bed and a shower room. The rooms are dated and so need modernising but for the amount of time we spent in the room this didnt bother us. The only downside was that we could hear the toilet from the room next to us being flushed and it was quite loud. The staff were more than happy to help us... Nikita especially, sorting out our delicious cooked breakfasts every morning... even though my partner was fussy with certain item, she didnt mind at all.

Popped in for a Sunday lunchtime snack. Staff friendly, food very basic. The place needs some TLC. Gents toilet had soap dispenser“removed” from wall so not able to wash hands, and the place is generally tatty.

I'll start by saying my husband is a fussy sod and finding a place he'll not only eat in but will return to is tricky. He's raving about the food at the Newcastle though and already wants to return asap.

Once again the Newcastle House excelled.. there was roast beef, ham, turkey and lamb on offer and between the three of us we tasted all four! Everyone was tender and tasty, the accompanying vegetables were perfectly cooked and proper gravy! The desserts were also very good.

Not so good now that Mr and Mrs R Sole go to the quiz. But was brilliant in 1972.

Oh dear. Friday night supper for two was so very poor. Basic food that ought to have been a breeze to prepare was in turns burnt, over oiled (#swimming), sparse (anything green) and bland. Unpleasant to eat so left much of it. The atmosphere was tad shambolic, floor dirty, table sticky, cramped seating, service poor. Advice turn around and visit elegant n similarly priced establishment Beadnell Towers for immediately behind you.

Very warm welcome and friendly service with a bit of banter. Perfect. Pub decorated nicely for Halloween and a good selection of beers as well as a decent cider 🌞 (Can’t always get a nice cider so this was greatly appreciated!) We booked a table for dinner and were allowed to stay in our campervan overnight in their car park. The food was delicious and our server (Sam) was very attentive and friendly. We then stayed for the regular Monday night quiz. We were terrible at it (ha ha!) but it was really good fun with plenty of local banter going on. Would highly recommend!
