The High Pavement Evening Cafe in Mendip

Booked this place because of the reviews and it did not disappoint! Everything was delicious, the service was amazing. We sat outside in the middle of December and were brought blankets and hot water bottles. It was lovely!

Had a brilliant time here, wonderful atmosphere and delicious food! The staff were all extremely welcoming and helpful, would definitely recommend!

We had a lovely lunch in this popular restaurant. We had not booked so ate outside as full inside. A good selection of plates to share and an amazing sherry menu. The red pepper dip muhammara was amazing so do order plenty of flatbread to mop it up. The location is uphill and there are steps so it could be difficult for some to access.

We had a really delicious, cosy dinner here. I’m not always a fan of the “small plates” thing but all the dishes here complemented each other beautifully, with really strong flavour combinations from Spain, North Africa and the Middle East. The “crema de jamón” was out of this world. Truly delicious, good atmosphere and lovely staff - will definitely be back.

Fantastic find we only stumbled on as our usual Frome favourite was fully booked. We got lucky and had a table in the gorgeous courtyard. Great food and service - it will now be our first choice.

Dragged here for a birthday party - the staff were rude and passive aggressive. The food was underwhelming and bad value. Another example of neoliberal Frome toss. Avoid.

We managed to get a last minute table for lunch whilst in Frome and wow we are so glad they managed to accommodate us as the food was incredible. Every dish tasted fantastic, and very reasonably priced for the amount of food received. The staff were very welcoming and advised us on various dishes and amounts to order. I would highly recommend to anyone and am planning to come back soon

Everything was utterly delicious. The flavours were marvellous, everything was fresh, the portion sizes were good and the service was great as well. Plenty of veggie options too. I am coming back to Frome just for this wonderful restaurant alone!

Incredible tapas , we couldn’t find anywhere for lunch and luckily for us they’d had a cancellation. The food and the service was first class so refreshing to have such a lovely waiter very informative and helpful . We can’t wait to return it was probably the best food and service I’ve had all year out for a meal . Helped by the delightful interior of the restaurant and the gorgeous outside terrace .

A little gem. Perfect. Aubergine and boquerones are must haves.

We called in here for lunch. We had travelled about 45 minutes to get here. It was well worth the trip. We had a dip and flatbreads and then a few dishes to share. Surprisingly our favourite dish was the aubergine, it was divine. I could have lunched on just that dish. The other dishes were lovely. Our least favourite was the chicken which wasn't as moist as l like. Service was wonderful, very polite and friendly. The experience was very satisfying. The only down l would give is a twelve and a half percent service charge. I think l should choose whether or not to pay a tip (in this case l certainly would have). Thank you for a lovely lunch

Last Friday I spent my Birthday in the delightful, Mediterranean garden of the High Pavement. Imagine my surprise when I was presented with a bottle of fizz to the table. "On the house" says the shy young man in the tweed shorts. Okay I'm a regular customer but I really didn't expect this kind gesture! The food was other worldy as usual, we usually start off with the cold starters and work up to the hot mains. The moorish mezze of all mezzes was presented to us. This food is so authentic and interesting, there isn't anything in town to match it. We had a delicious bottle of red and a sparky bottle of white for our table.  This is a local family affair created by Stu and Aimee, a talented chef and a very warm and approachable maìtre d. Their staff are always wired to please and really know about the food here and are always attentive. They certainly haven't compromised over the years and work hard to achieve an unpretentious and affordable space. Once sat at your table you're never rushed and given plenty of time to choose, the night can just roll on and suddenly you've spent a pretty special evening here. Honestly believe the hype and get there while they've got the gorgeous garden open. I dream about when I can go back as soon as I leave the building! They're not sick of me yet!

Wow!! Wonderful food and lovely experience! I visited for a birthday meal with family and we all had a fantastic evening. Between us we tried all the veggie options and several desserts, and every single dish delicious. I loved how the ingredients were crafted to create something with a familiar basis that was then made special and unique, without ever overcomplicating the dish. The staff were lovely, fun and friendly, and knew all about the food, and gave great recommendations for drinks pairings. A true culinary delight and I can’t wait to go back!

Absolute gem of a restaurant! Everything was really delicious and also fairly reasonably priced. Staff were lovely too. The garden is an especially gorgeous place to sit in the summer. Felt like a mini holiday to somewhere delightfully exotic. Even the music choices were great :D

From booking to feeling very well fed this restaurant ticks all the boxes. The owner tried to accommodate outside seating however our time schedule did not fit with her many options Always with calmness and a smile she arranged casual diners as they arrived on a busy Saturday The food choice is excellent and obviously all produced on site. All diets catered for and each dish beautifully presented Service was quick and we did not feel rushed. Advice given regarding the tapas plates. Message to self: What a find and book sooner next time to go in the delightful garden.

Food on another level, very reasonable prices and great service and atmosphere. We travelled from London to babington house and it’s so worth coming to Frome even if only for this place.

I have been wanting to visit the high pavement for a while now, we finally visited Friday and it certainly didn’t disappoint. It is probably one of the nicest meals I’ve had out in a long time. We couldn’t choose our favourites and there wasn’t anything to fault. The staff were attentive and knowledgable, owner was lovely, place was super cute and the food was just the best. It’ll certainly be a new regular for us and I can’t wait to bring more friends!

An absolute find! Some of the best friendly service ever, excellent food and great atmosphere. Only slight criticism is the deep fried aubergine and honey - aubergine was cut too thick and squidgy in the middle. Apart from that, an excellent evening.

Discovered The High Pavement just by chance on a trip to Frome. They accommodated us even though we hadn't booked. We have a dog and were told we could have a table in the garden. What an amazing setting!! Beautiful! Instead of asking what each individual food was, (because we didn't know) we ordered 6 plates and asked the waitress (Chana i think her name) to feed us. She had never been asked that before, but the food she chose was exceptional. Thank you. Highly recommended. Find it and go in the garden if you can. You will not be disappointed.

My first time here although I had heard how good it was and I was not disappointed. My friends were international, urban and discerning (picky) and, I'm glad to say, extremely impressed. We felt the food was innovative, every dish was fabulous, fun decor and genned up staff. We will be back.

Loved everything about this place, the vibe was relaxed and cosy and the food was spot on. So glad we chose to eat here in Frome. It’s just a shame it’s a 4 hour drive away for us and we can’t visit regularly.

Wow, absolutely divine food! Had to spend a good 15 minutes scouring the menu because we wanted everything! Wish more restaurants were this creative with flavours. Lovely staff and excellent service to boot. Was a cold night and the only tables available were outside but we were given hot water bottles which was a lovely touch. Thanks guys 😻

Found this place accidentally, and am so glad I did. The food is amazing, amongst the best I have ever had, anywhere. It is worth coming to Frome to try.

WOW. My new favourite restaurant. My only complaint is that I can’t eat here every night. I should also mention this restaurant caters very well for both meat eaters and those who eat a plant based diet extremely well. We can’t wait to return.

A lovely little restaurant. Unusual clientele, which reflects the niche place that this part of Frome has in this part of the country. Busy buzzy atmosphere. Small plates of food, good quality, a tad expensive.

Fantastic small plates restaurant among the best I've ever had. Lovely staff. Packed venue, so definitely book, but somehow maintains a chill vibe. Cooked chorizo is meat crack.

Excellent food, good wine, friendly staff, great atmosphere and all at a reasonable price. I'd come back to Frome simply to eat here again. Make sure you book ahead, they're understandably always busy... And try the Chorizo, it is very, very good.

Beautiful restaurant with a mouth watering Tapas menu. The table water was refreshingly cold and welcoming. Great selection of soft drinks, wine and sherries. Our table of six were all so impressed with the quality and presentation of the food. The service was impeccable and friendly. I really liked the squid but the crispy deep fried goats cheese with date syrup was equally stunning. They obviously love their food here. Such a lovely memorable lunch. Thank you.

The title covers multiple experiences of this lovely restaurant. It's Tapas with a Moorish influence. This is what the delightful lady explained to The Memsaab and I. In a very eloquent manner. By gosh the food was good. Anchovies, flat bread, monkfishtails and croquettes to name a few of the amazing Tapas. Jamon dishes rreminded me of Seville. Cheese board indulgent but with the accompanying Sherry meant I slept well.

Well worth the hype. Brilliant food and staff!

The High Pavement in my opinion is one of the best places to eat in Frome. Speciality tapas without the extortionate prices. You walk in and feel like you're in a Mediterranean dream. If you go in tje summer, the garden awaits. The staff, the food, the atmosphere the service are all there on display. Locals Stu & Aimee and their amazing friendly and competent staff run this place like a tight ship. Over the years it's changed its starter/main meals theme from a totally creative tapas feast. Vegetarian, vegan and all foods considered. Extraordinary and creative tasty food. We had the truffled sheeps cheese, cauliflower tabouleh, white bean hummus and flatbread to start. Coupled with some nice sherry and a great spanish red wine. We slowly eased ourselves into the next course Turkish leeks, deep fried goats cheese, herb and bean falafel and manchego and mushroom croquettas. Topped off with Seville orange ice cream. Pure perfection. I've never ever had a mundane dinner there, I'm proud to say and I feel so blessed that this wonderful place is in my home town.

We actually did not go to the restaurant and had take out, the restaurant makes boxes called mezze, with the options of vegetarian or meat. I have to share that it was amazing food, well balanced and copious. We definitely will order again.

We had take out, the restaurant is doing Mezze boxes with diverses meats or a vegetarian option. It was amazing, fresh, exotic herbs flavours, the Mushroom, Manchego & Thyme Croquetta for example was delicately spiced and melted in the mouth. The famous fired goat cheese did not disappoint. You must try them all!

What a gem ! We ate here tonight and just before a fog at The Cheese & Grain. Efficient service, great food, spotlessly clean toilet. Will definitely go back.

What a find! The choice of dishes and the quality of them are just outstanding. The dishes are so flavoursome and prepared beautifully. Such a shame they are only open three evening a week and only one lunchtime. But it's certainly worth a visit!

A combination of amazing and friendly service with incredible food made our night at the High Pavement really enjoyable. Having just moved to Frome, the waiting staff made us feel welcome and took care of us, top marks all round. Will definitely be coming back

This place never fails to delight with their inventive food. It's a kind of middle eastern take on tapas. The only downside is that it is very small and gets crowded and noisy. There is a garden but getting a bit cold for that.

The most amazing restaurant that I've had the luck to eat in. The flavours of the dishes were amazing. I can highly recommend the bulgar kofte, sardines and butternut squash. The staff were very knowledgeable and very friendly.

Delightful in every way. The food was a revelation, the staff charming. We were given this outing as a 50th anniversary gift, we just didn't know food could be like this.

Amazing place! The staff are so unbelievably friendly and welcoming. We sat outside in the garden which was a lovely space despite it being a cold night. The food was absolutely sublime, SO many veggie and vegan options! Everything we got was vegan and not one bite was disappointing. Highlights (although hard to choose) were the bulgar kofte, cauliflower with green tahini and the amazing crispy aubergine. Very reasonably priced too with 9 food items and 2 glasses of wine coming in at less than £70 including a well deserved service charge. Highly recommend trying the Finca Museum red wine which was fab. Despite living in London and having world-class dining on our doorstep, this was one of the best meals we’d had in ages. Would love to come back one day!

An incredible meal, absolutely loved everything about it from the service to the excellent food, The tapas was all delicious and was very unique, some great flavours that I've scarcely experienced before. It was also a bonus that they squeezed us in without a booking on a Saturday. I wish we lived closer to come here more often.

What a gorgeous place. The most amazing food, Tapas are there to rival any of the best Spanish establishments. Staff are lovely. Would whole heartedly recommend and can’t wait to return.

What a fabulous find! Very high quality tapas made really well and delivered as prepared. Excellent selection of wines and drinks, including some low alcohol options for drivers. Very good recruitment policy - only the most helpful and lovely team allowed to work there. I will back and stay in a hotel nearby so that I can take my time overs bottle of wine.

My wife found The High Pavement in her research for food during our stay in Frome, and booked a table two months in advance. Claire, our bed and breakfast host at Rook Lane, claimed it to be the best restaurant in town—very happy to say it lives up to that status and the numerous other positive reviews. We enjoyed a number of tapas, with the spicy chickpeas, deep fried goat cheese, quail, bulgur kofte, and romanesco all standing out. Service was kind and fluid, with cold dishes coming out before hot. This place stays consistently booked, so check as far ahead as possible!

Love the High Pavement , who wouldn't, but we felt a distinct lack of choice on the meat side of things this time . No meat on the hot plates , only Lamb on the charcoal grill. No steak , no pork , no chorizo. ..not enough choice . Hopefully more meat in winter months please ! (Staff fab as usual )

Top tier tapas!!! The minute we walked in the service and the atmosphere was so welcoming and the outside area is so pretty, makes you feel like you are on holiday. The food was the best tapas we’ve had, particular favourites were the fried goats cheese in date syrup and the lamb. Would highly recommend :)

Lovely location and a pleasant town. Staff excellent, and food equally good. Book because it's busy. The only thing that gets them a star less than five is the 12.5% service charge. They will remove it but it is ALWAYS bad policy to make a customer ask to do this. It is never a good idea to dictate what a tip should be and this policy will prevent me from returning.

Sensational. What a treat to get a table here at last! Exquisite food and an excellent Sherry and wine list. Service all the way was brilliant - professional and friendly. We were excited by the out of the ordinary menu choices and were not disappointed. Loved the deep fried goat's cheese and the chargrilled spiced lamb (cooked to perfection). Just when we thought it couldn't get better, along came dessert! Delicious Pedro Ximenez ice cream, spectacular 'Eastern Mess', and then the most unexpectedly brilliant pistachio halva candy floss - wow! All this in the fabulous covered garden. Thank you.

Memorable dinner on Saturday evening. Such a small place which leaves such a big impression. So obviously run by people who care passionately about providing great hospitality. It was a horrible evening on Saturday and yet some hardy souls still sat outside! Food was an interesting series of small plates to share which were all tasty and overall extremely reasonable.

We were in Frome for a night. We were very lucky to secure a booking for the first sitting... though only on the pavement, at this very popular restaurant. A local told us he'd been waiting to get a table in the garden, since May!! The food was amazing. The spiced chickpeas were a revelation. An explosion on the palate...so much so, we re-ordered it again, after the first plate went down so amazingly....the tapas style was great for sharing. The staff, above all, were welcoming and friendly bunch. Keep up the good work. Well deserved 5☆ from me.

Wonderful place - great atmosphere and incredible food. Very reasonable price for a good bottle of local Somerset wine. The Eastern Mess was the best pudding I've eaten in a long time. Very special experience.

I came here a few years ago and loved it, it was just as brilliant today. The food is exceptional and the service is wonderful. I’d eat here every night if I could!

We were in Frome for a couple of nights and after looking at the on-line menu this place looked like a good place to eat. Fortunately this proved to be true. Nice ambience, friendly helpful servers and mist importantly amazing tapas. This was by far the best food we had on our two week trip and one of my favourite meals this year Make sure you book well in advance as we reserved four weeks ahead and only 5:45 was available!

Wonderful. All of it. We had the most fabulous table in the garden by the pond. It’s such a beautifully designed outdoor dining area, cosy, a little bit magical and not overcrowded. The food was absolutely delicious and we ordered about three quarters of the menu for five of us. I want to bring my husband here, he’s a head chef and he would be so delighted by the originality and inventiveness of the menu. Every dish had its own flavours, the meat was perfectly cooked. Hurrah for the kitchen! Wine (white Rioja) and some Prosecco paired perfectly with it all. Timing was really good particularly as it was a Saturday night and they were clearly busy. Everything felt seamless, delicious and relaxing. The icing on the cake was our waiter, Heather, friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, just kind and actually seemed to enjoy her job. When I was a waiter I literally hated every single customer by the 7th year of doing it. She’s a darling, a gift to have in a good restaurant. The High Pavement deserves all kinds of accolades. I live in Hampshire and am planning a return trip just to show this place off to people. A proper destination restaurant. Thank you, you absolute legends!

Amazing Food, lovely relaxing atmosphere I pre booked a table in the garden, which was well worth the wait. We bought around 15 dishes and shared between 4 people. Some dishes are smaller than others but you can request more as you eat. The staff were very informative and friendly and good selection of wines. Would definitely visit again.

Went AGAIN last night. Fabulous meal, knowledgeable and friendly staff, sat in the garden. Always a good non-meat selection. Always enjoy going to this restaurant.
