I have eaten in here a few times and the food has always been incredible! First time I had the sweet potato pancakes, they were sooo good! The staff are friendly and chatty, it's a lovely little cafe.

The website said they were open every day, BigG said it was only weekends. So we went there once and found it closed (website is not up to date). They are only open Sa. and Su. til 5 p.m. We arrived after 4 p.m. and were immediately told, that the kitchen is closed and they were going to close soon. They started to mop the floors and put up the chairs while customers were still in the shop eating and drinking. WORST:These service people were not interested in customer experience or anything that make s a restaurant or coffee shop worth a visit!!!!Positive: The sweets are to die for! I think they make their money mostly catering and selling outside/online. I would recommend to order and not to visit. Unfortunately we couldn't try the cooked food, but if it is prepared with the same attitude as the rest of the service I would not recommend it!Add: They serve the worst, worst coffee we every tasted, and I mean in comparison to cold war eastern-block quality!

Went to herbivore kitchen with my meat eater boyfriend and we both loved it!We had a cake and pancakes each. The cakes were both amazing, would love to have them again. The pancakes were nice but was a massive plate so very hard to finish especially with the cakes as well. However, overall it is very good value for money and I would visit again.

Overall okay, a bit disappointingThe coffee was excellent and the concept/ menu idea really appeals. However my pancakes were so very very dry they were practically inedible. Quite surprising for a cafe that has a whole section of its menu devoted to pancakes. It seems the pancake stacks are more for appearamnce than for practicality or flavour. When the waitress put my husbands pancake stack on the table it toppled over splattering him with bechamel sauce.its pretty expensive for what it is. and seems to attract a lot of loud students. i must say the toppings were edible even though the pancakes were notif you must go here, maybe just have a coffee

Went with daughter ( vegan,) for breakfast. Had the " all day breakfast" with extra (£1!) Egg.Egg was fine. Rest of pile of mostly dry unappetizing " pancakes" sliver of vegan haggis, sliver of ? Wilted spinach ? Some beans.. With the ,? Coffee ( sent back as I was sure they'd made a mistake...) But but no. Came back the same dishwater brown/grey... ? Not coffee...I refused, politely.. to pay. Staff were lovely. Shame on owner of this establishment who cuts costs to maximise profit. Cut too deeply madam, IMHO.

Came here for lunch and ordered the Thai banana fritter and peanut satay wrap, the lentil salad, and the carrot and butternut squash soup. All dishes were delicious. The soup was especially great, perfectly spiced. The lentil salad was very good too, not overly dressed. Highly recommend this place.

We’d lined up this place for brunch after running the Edinburgh Marathon 10km and it didn’t disappoint! Hubby got the all day breakfast pancakes and I got the banana and blueberries/Biscoff crumb pancakes. Absolutely delish! Great little eclectic cafe atmosphere with art and cards etc on sale. I also bought some cute greeting cards while I was there...I’d definitely go back again.

We popped in here for a meal when we were at the fringe festival. The burgers were excellent and the wine affordable and enjoyable. The best bit were the brownies, fantastic.

I had an amazing meal here last night with 5 friends before we went to see a show. The menu is really interesting and we all struggled to choose as we wanted everything! Everything was absolutely delicious and great sized portions - excellent value at the prices and the service was just super. Cannot recommend more! Hoping to go back again this week!

I opted for the beetroot falafel which came with a choice of side salad (I chose the slaw one) plus a glass of coconut water, lime & chilli. The food was tasty & plentiful and the drink complimented it nicely. I was too full to sample any of the cakes afterwards, unfortunately! There’s plenty of extra seating downstairs if, as we found, there were no seats left upstairs.

My friend recommended we try here after someone he knew had raved about it. I was slightly unsure as I've had mixed experiences at other vegan cafes. However, I was very pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food and the interesting menu.

Was so excited to find a place that does fluffy, delicious, American-style pancakes, especially vegan ones!!! They're so yummy, but quite pricey. Definitely worth the splurge every once in a while. All the pastries I've tried have been delicious too!

I've been here several times since it opened, and every time I've tried something different from their selection of pancakes. There tends to be about 4 or 5 on the menu at any one time, but they change up the menu every few months so it's not boring. Just before a menu-change there tends to be a special offer on the pancakes (buy 1 get 1 free or similar) so if you've never tried Herbivore Kitchen before and want to go with a friend, it's worth keeping an eye on their social media to see when the deals are on, because then you can grab a brunch that's excellent value. The rest of the time the pancakes are a little bit on the pricey side at about £8-10, however you do get a large stack, and they are very filling. As other reviewers have mentioned, they don't appear to be cooked fresh, and because of that they do tend to be a little bit dry and stodgy, but still very tasty. The fillings are always delicious, really creative and well-presented, although sometimes I've felt like a little bit more sauce/filling would be helpful, given the number of pancakes you get, and their consistency. Herbivore Kitchen also sell some salads and wraps, both to sit in and take-away - I haven't tried any yet but they look lovely; expensive though. Same with the drinks - they sell a range of juices, lemonades etc, but they're all very pricey for a small portion, as are the cakes. It's really good to see a wide range of vegan-friendly bakes though, so I'd definitely give those a try if I felt I could afford to. In terms of decor, it's a nice, bright place with seating on the ground floor and in the basement. The service has been variable - sometimes the staff have been very attentive and have shown me us to a table, taken orders promptly and the food has come out without much of a wait at all, while sometimes they've looked quite disinterested and the food has taken a while. This hasn't correlated with the business of the cafe either. You generally have to pick up your own cutlery too, which isn't much bother really, but that's not clear when you order food, so sometimes you can be left wondering why your food has arrived without any means to eat it. Same with the drinking water - you just help yourself to water from a large jug near the door. The toilet is clean, but it is downstairs, which I could see being a problem for anyone with mobility issues, as the stairs are quite steep and narrow. The cafe accepts card payment, which is handy. All in all, I'd recommend it to anyone for a nice brunch in Newington, vegetarian or not.

We ordered the kale and spinach pancakes with mexican fritters - pancakes were a bit more bready amd dry than we expected but still delicious. Mexican black bean soup was good too, although only order if you're a fan of sweet corn (it was practically half soup half sweetcorn). Lovely service though and very relaxing and comfortable atmosphere. Would come again! Good value for money!

Went here this week for lunch with a friend. Neither of us are even vegetarian but let me tell you, I'd convert tomorrow if all veggie food was this good! Apparently they are week 2 into their new menu - oh it's gooood :-). For reference I had the pancakes with basil & spinach pesto, topped with a mushroom filled with brown lentils and covered with a watercress sauce. To die for, really. Relaxed atmosphere, good service, great value.

went for pancakes for breakfast and they were absolutely lush - super thick and dense (in a good way) with amazing flavour and fab toppings. Got a brownie to take out and it was the best brownie i have ever had in my whole life - seriously regret only buying one!

The milkshake was very underwhelming- warm, small and served with minimal cream. Although I ordered the lotus biscuit milkshake it tasted more like a warm banana smoothie- definitely not worth the £4.50. The pancakes are also pre cooked and merely heated up, for this price I expect fresh food.

The pancake I had was great, it’s quite rare to find a decent salty pancake with imaginative flavors. I had a Moroccan inspired one with sweet potato pancakes. The only critique is that one part of the pancake was very hard which leads me to think that they are frozen or pre prepared.

I agree that it is kind of expensive from North American standards-- but this is a city that coffee comes a bit expensive than average in Canada in general.

We went here after I tried some of their cake from Stockbridge market (which was amazing) and wasn't expecting it to be just as tasty as it was. The minimalistic decor is the perfect setting for an interesting range of coffees and drinks and flavoursome foods. The food menu, while not the longest, had a diverse range of options, all suiting a vegetarian diet, as well as other dietary requirements - my partner, who is lactose intolerant, had a wide choice as well. While prices may have been on the higher side compared to other cafes nearby, it was truly delicious and very much worth it. Would recommend.

Cute little place. I found the staff helpful! The food was delicious. I had the black olive tapenade sandwich and my boyfriend had the mint and edamame puree sandwich. They both came with two salads and the standout one was the giant cous cous with a date and tamarind dressing. Soooo tasty! Pretty expensive my Edinburgh standards but the ingredients seem to be of a high quality.

I've enjoyed Brownies from The Herbivore Kitchen at many Vegan fairs, they are amazing!! Buy them for presents for everybody!! I've also been to The Supper Club which the owners run, an amazing 3 course meal that in the past has been in various locations, but now the 'kitchen' is open its available all the time!! I had the thai soup, it was so fresh and amazing, Johnny had the chilli with corn bread, for reveiwing purposes I had to try his too, oh Johnny chose well, it was filling and really tasty!! Pop in anytime for fast service or carry out food and the most yummy brownies!!

There was a time when you would go to a posh cafe and pay a bit extra for both the quality of service and food. Not so in 2017 , defiantly not so in most cases in modern Edinburgh.
