The Hens and Chicken Theatre Bar in Islington

We booked the Hen and Chicken for 20 people very last minute for our pre wedding drinks last weekend. It wasn’t a problem for Nadine, and when we arrived an hour later she’d set us up with the high tables we requested and was welcoming and very accommodating from the moment we stepped in. The wedding was a surprise for our guests and Nadine helped us keep it that way, helping to stash some of our wedding stuff and keeping everyone well watered. We couldn’t have asked for more from her, and she really helped our day to be what it was. At some point during the day everyone said ‘and how lovely was that barmaid today’. It’s the kind of place you’d pop in for a swift one and end up staying all afternoon. If you want a well looked after pub in a top location, with great drinks and service with smile, this is the place for you.

We had an impromptu birthday here and the staff were amazing! Super accommodating - plus a great vibe in the bar, good music & nice people. Really recommend coming here for a drink or 10

Busy, fun little pub, it was just a shame we arrived to late for the theatre, maybe next time!

Friendly place to drink a beer with friends. The service was very pleasant and even offered us to taste beers before serving them to us (small gestures count 🤗). A pint is between £8 and £10. Don't expect to sit down, it's a pub.

Both bar people, Sam & Nadine are wonderful and profotional and lovely people. They have made my visit exquisite!!!

Great pub, right in the heart of the action. You get a great warm feeling the minute you walk in the door, by very welcoming staff. I attended for a film screening in the cinema upstairs which had great retro seating, and was nice and warm. With great sound system. I’ll be back!

The vibe in the bar is a delight! Sam who was working the bar was attentive and excellent at relating to customers.

This is one of our favourite pubs in Islington. Service (especially from Nadine) is always first class - so friendly and warm. Nothing is too much trouble even when I’m not a theatre attendee. A must visit in H&I!

Had a wonderful first experience at The Hen & Chicken. Served by the lovely Nadine and other staff members. We watched the performance “The Kennington Loop” it was amazing! We will definitely be returning!

Hen and chickens is one of our locals and I absolutely love it. The service is great, the staff are lovely and there is always a great atmosphere. Whilst I understand why they do it, its really annoying that on Arsenal match days only ticket holders are allowed in the pub ..... it would be good if they had some allowance for locals to still be allowed in on those days

It was our first visit to this pub as I have moved in close by. The environment and staff Nadine and Lucas are so lovely. Very welcoming, friendly and professional. I will definitely be back again.

Great pub, very friendly service behind the bar 🙌🏽 I actually came to watch a show being performed in the theatre above, the intervention - a great show 10/10. Drinks were allowed in the theatre just on plastic cups which is fine, theater itself was great, small but plenty of space between seats so no awkward having to stand up to let people pass 🙌🏽 it was a hot day and the whole place was well air conditioned which I was very grateful for.

I was here early on a Saturday night for a theatre visit. I'd had a full day and was carrying shopping. I was early for the show and my phone needed charging. Everything was easily available; charging point, toilet, a comfortable wingback chair and efficient and kind staff. I didn't want food (and that's not available) but perhaps in the future? A very relaxed and pleasant place with good, efficient staff. Thanks. I'll be back!

This one of my favourite pubs in the area - great atmosphere, great pint of Guinness and Nadine and the rest of the staff are brilliant. It’s got a really authentic feel to it and attracts a nice and diverse crowd too.

Fabulous little gem of St Pauls Road, Islington. Very friendly pub and theatre. Staff are amazing and very quick to serve. Don’t walk past and pop in for a drink and let Lucas, Chelsea, Nadine and Ciann look after you and ensure you have a great experience. Five stars ⭐️

A nice little theatre pub! It’s a bit small, not suitable for larger groups. The seats in the theatre have very narrow space for your legs so if you’re a tall person try and sit on the edges by the stairs.

Beautiful ambience, super great place before and after a show upstairs! Don’t get me wrong as a show was phenomenal and Nadine on bar was too!

Had a great time with pals. J was on top form, you know how he gets, and Jack was let out of his box. Barmaid Nadine was off the chain. Can’t recommend highly enough!!

Nice enough but very rough around the edges. Barmaid was very dismissive when I asked if I could charge my phone up… “android round here”, so a very blunt NO! Very average.

Nadine was an absolute delight and is a credit to the establishment. Will be back purely for her.

As someone that spends an unhealthy amount of time at this pub, I can honestly say that it is a wonderful place. It’s not a huge establishment or a place that plays loud music and has vast crowds, it is instead an intimate, quaint pub that has an abundance of character and something akin to a zen vibe. It’s located a stone’s throw from Highbury and Islington station so you’d expect it to be heaving with an overcrowded energy, but instead it exudes a lovely relaxed atmosphere. The staff behind the bar are all top notch, particularly the manager, Lucas who charms with an easy humour and also Nadine, who has such a lovely vibrant energy. This is the ideal place for when you’re having a bad day and better yet, a perfect place for when you’re having a good one. I’d say it’s a hidden gem and I encourage you to NOT visit, because you could very well take my favourite seat of one of the comfy leather, Chesterfield arm chairs.

A really vibey place with a great selection of beers and non-alcoholic cocktails! They have a theatre space on the 1st floor, which shows comedy on most nights, so if you're looking for a place to see a show and have a drink it's a really good shout. The service was quick and friendly, so we'll definitely be coming back!

Brilliant venue. Good music, really pleasant atmosphere and friendly helpful team. When I managed to lose my wallet by letting it fall out of my pocket they couldn't have been more helpful - searching everywhere until they found it! Fantastic place.

Met a friend here on 23rd December for a pre Christmas meet up and a few drinks. I'd always passed it on the bus and always thought 'i must pop in' well I'm really glad I did. Really cosy venue with a great atmosphere. I met a really lovely bar server called Nadine who mad the evening even better. She was so friendly and offered a really warm welcome. Drinks are a reasonably priced and they offer a range of bar snacks. Will definitely be in again as we were made to feel so welcome. Thank you so much!

How on Earth this place survives with so few folks for some of the shows... who knows? But the shows are great, the cocktails tasty, and the selection of other bevvies diverse enough to please any palate. Go. See a show. Support local theatre.

As always, very hard to review a theatre without also reviewing the show you saw there. I saw "Yoga and sex...for women (over 40)". The show was superb! Side splittingly funny! See it if you get a chance. The bar was good, with relatively quick service, even though it was quite busy. You can take in drinks, but they need to be in a plastic cup. One star off because they don't offer food.
