I recently had lunch at this gastropub, and it was an overall pleasant experience. From the start, I was warmly welcomed by a friendly staff, who were attentive without being intrusive. The atmosphere is modern and relaxed, with decor that really invites you to settle in and enjoy your time. On the food side, I was particularly impressed with the tortellini, cooked perfectly al dente, with a memorable texture and flavor. For dessert, the poached pear served with custard was another highlight – the mix of flavors and textures was smooth and comforting. The only minor disappointment was the stuffed rabbit as the main course, which lacked a bit of character. I was hoping for something with a bit more punch, though it was still enjoyable overall. All in all, this is a spot I’d definitely recommend, and I’ll be coming back to explore other dishes!

Biblical wind and rain and the M4. And then The Heathcock. All warmth of welcome and superb Bloody Mary. A Sunday lunch to banish clouds and set the world momentarily to rights. Really good focaccia and butter. Sweet oysters with apple and fennel, ox heart skewers with good green sauce. Then the main act, roast porcetta stuffed with butternut squash and sage, awesome crackling, a moreish mustard sauce, goose fat roast spuds almost as good as home cooked and tangy tasty cauliflower cheese. There was pudding and a great macchiato, but nothing really mattered after probably the best pub roast ever. Joyous cooking. One to be repeated, definitely worth a journey.

Me and my partner visited for the first time yesterday after a from a friend! The seemingly typical British pub on first appearance truly dazzled us! The restaurant was quiet and well laid out, the staff were extremely attentive, well mannered and helpful.. and the food …we had the tasting menu and it was stunning! The chef seriously knows how to put flavours on a plate!! Will definitely come again 👏🏻

Newly arrived in Cardiff, I was invited to have a beer at this PUB with my housemates. The bartender was very polite (I ended up forgetting to ask his name, but my English isn't the best yet and I'm dealing with the embarrassment of speaking), but he ensured I got a Guinness served at an impeccable temperature. The atmosphere is cozy and evokes a style that's both classic and modern at the same time. A pleasant surprise, and I will certainly return to get to know it better!

Felt the need to write a review on this because of how outstanding it was. Went for Sunday Lunch for my wife's birthday because we love the Hare and Hounds so much. We arrived 30 minutes early for our reservation but we were still immediately seated, drinks and water arrived extremely quickly but more importantly the food took 15 minutes from ordering to arrive at our table. The quality of the food was outstanding and our service was impeccable despite it being a bit busy. My wife said she has not experienced a Sunday Lunch like it before, there just wasn't anything to fault them on. Highly recommend and NOT crazy expensive!

Came here for a joint birthday celebration and unfortunately the service really let it down. Waited nearly an hour for starters, and we had to order more drinks at the bar twice as we were never offered more by a server (despite clearly being empty-cupped for a while!). We also had to go up and ask for the bill at the bar, and go up again to pay due to being practically ignored all night. The food was lovely and the staff themselves very friendly, when you could get their attention anyway. But after paying £300 between 4 of us, including a hefty service charge, we were not impressed overall and the experience didn't reflect a Michelin restaurant..

Was in town to see family and friends this weekend and my buddy suggested the Heathcock. I'd been to the pub in the old days but I was amazed at how nice the new owners had made it. What a lovely spot. First and foremost, great food! We had a selection of small plates, including a pea and courgette salad, sweetbreads, pigs cheeks, and pollock. We had some lovely wines by the glass and I really enjoyed my panna cotta desert. Service was relaxed and friendly; which is how I like it. And I thought the atmosphere across the 'venue' was great, even given that there were two wedding parties in at the time. Next time I'm in town I'll definitely be going again. Thanks!

Four of us visited on a busy Saturday evening, we are lucky enough to be regular diners and and have visited a number of Cardiff restaurants in the past 2 or 3 years so we all know what we like and we all liked it here. Lovely, attentive, informed service, an interesting menu that has the sense not to try too many things and a super relaxed atmosphere. It was a small plates menu and we had a mix of the meat, fish and vegetarian options. Possibly the vegetarian options might be a bit restricted but if you are a pescatarian then there is plenty of choice. And here would be my one criticism, one of the fish dishes has a chicken sauce which whilst delicious does take one choice away from those who prefer not to eat meat. All in all a really enjoyable evening, wouldn’t hesitate to return.

The Heathcock is a lovely, warm, independent pub. The food is often locally sourced, creative and delicious and v reasonably priced. The drink selection is v good and it's in a great location with walks on the Taff nearby. I have no affiliation to the pub but have visited a number of times and was surprised to read some of these reviews. I think people giving low ratings because of a slight 'lack of atmosphere' or a bit of salt (when they got given free food after) need to think about the repercussions such reviews can have on independent businesses that are trying their best in a v difficult climate. If we lose all our independent pubs to weatherspoons and big chains that only offer hamburgers you'll only have yourselves to blame.

This was difficult to score. The staff were excellent and attentive so no complaints there. However there was a lack of atmosphere in the room which looked quite stark. It would benefit from redecorating with darker colours and some pictures on the walls. Food wise, my starter was excellent but my partner who had the crab was very disappointed. The portion was extremely small given the price, literally two mouthfuls and it was gone. The mains were fine, nothing wrong but nothing exceptional. Was it a bad experience, no! Would I rush to go back, no again. Would I go if invited with friends, yes. All in all an ok experience

Don't consider the Heathcock "just" as a Pub : it's a really fine dining experience, with fresh products (oysters, homemade surdough, asparagus mousse, But it's also an experience, with really great atmosphere, with a nice beer garden and good beverages, but sufficiently separated so that you can chose your ambiance, and even go from one to the other (pre dining drinks in the garden, and a more quiet room for the dining). To be noted : the service here is absolutely marvelous. Nice, friendly, helpful, you feel welcome as a family member, while not being too pushy at the same time. Real kudos to all personnel here !

After touring Snowdonia we decided to spend our last two days in Cardiff. I had read about the Hare and Hound and how great their food was, so I decided to stay in their sister establishment, the Heathcock, as not only is it a pub and restaurant but it has accommodation. We booked a meal in the restaurant for the Saturday night. The Heathcock is in llandaff a leafy suburb of Cardiff 2 miles from the centre and a lovely walk in if you’re up for it.The building is over 100 years old with lots of character and charm. The pub is always buzzing with local patrons and has a lovely beer garden outside with a herb section that services the dishes in the restaurant. We were met by a member of staff who carried our bags and showed us to our room. The only drawback was I had a large case after travelling for 8 days previously and the stairs were somewhat winding. The room was fabulous, overlooking the beer garden, beautifully furnished , supplied with water a little fridge and a coffee machine. The beer garden did not impact on our sleep (I’m a light sleeper) as closing time was 12 am.The bathroom was big enough to have a party in with a roll top bath and separate rain shower. We enjoyed the atmosphere in the pub and beer garden on the first night and the staff were friendly, welcoming and efficient. We were in the restaurant on the second night .The food was delicious, and value for money. We had beer battered oyster to start, lamb and mackerel for main course and Madelines with salted caramel for dessert( with a dessert wine)They also have a well priced wine list. Again the service was seamless. We had breakfast on our last day and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. I look forward to returning when in Cardiff again. It is a little gem! The only other draw back is it does not have a car park so parking is in the residential street around the corner. However on a city break this is not an issue.

Had been looking forward to this but was totally disappointed! Kept waiting for table and not kept updated about when it would be ready. I understand people are taking their time but customers should either be told at the time of booking that there’s a time limit, or the establishment should take less bookings. The food wasn’t as good as I expected (given the prices and that I’ve eaten there several times previously) and I would go as far to say that I’ve eaten better in Cooper’s Carvery in Ely (very tasty Sunday lunch) and The Castell Mynach, which with hindsight I wish we’d gone to! However the Welsh Rarebit tasted delicious (the bits thats I could eat), it’s just unfortunate that it was difficult to cut through. Also, quite disappointing to discover that they’d run out of a few dishes (1 of which was beef and a Sunday roast was the main point of us booking ), so we ended up ordering the chicken pie (for 2) which was extremely salty. Not sure whether they underestimated the amount of plates (although given that they were fully booked a week ago, I would have expected them to be experienced enough to work out numbers needed based on bookings but being told “we’re busy today” is not acceptable as they already knew that! Needless to say we won’t be returning, especially as they had the audacity to add a 12.5% service charge to the bill and not answer me when I queried it.

Me and my girlfriend had a Sunday lunch at the Heathcock last Sunday, off the back of a friend's recommendation. The good bits - my food was lovely, thought the beef was cooked to perfection, roasties were tasty and the cauliflower cheese was great. Service was friendly and welcoming and the cost in my eyes was reasonable. However the bad bits - we waited over 45mins for our meals to arrive, my girlfriends roasties were overdone and unedible for her. She was also gutted about having one single carrot ( I didn't really mind) it's a shame food took so long to arrive as it put us off ordering a dessert (the souffle looked great.) We was also seated in the building next to the beer garden, next to the door which made sitting there a cold experiance. Im keen to try again and see if this was a one off, however it will be hard to persuade the girlfriend to go again. I would personally give the Heathcock 4* however the girlfriend said her rating was 2* so I evened it out.

I am unfortunately having to write this due to lack of appropriate response from The Healthcock in regards to issues involving a food poisoning incident on 23rd December leaving 6 of our party unwell with suspected norovirus over Christmas as well as sub standard customer service in relation to this and a previous booking. We visited Healthcock on two occasions in two months, unfortunately both occasions have been extremely disappointing. November 2023 - party of 6 - Heathcock was out of food options to cater for a Celiac member of the party (they had prior warning in the booking made 2 weeks prior), meaning this person had no choice of their meal for the evening. We had a drink spilled over a party member by the waitress - no apology, we still had to pay for the drink, later a man behind the bar joked about this to the party, unfortunately this didn't land very well. They then left 5 desserts off the bill, the following day, on noticing this, we called to settle the matter, they did not even thank us for calling to give them the extra £50 we owed them. I responded to their auto email for feedback, very reasonably advising them of our experience, however I believe I was fair and complimentary in the areas where it was deserved. We had good food and despite these bits, had enjoyed our evening - everyone can have an off night right? Unfortunately, we never heard anything back from them in relation to this feedback. This felt a little underwhelming, even an email back to apologise for the spilled drink that we had still paid for would have been something. December 23rd 2023 - party of 14. Christmas Menu. 6 out of 7 people who ate the oysters became unwell on Christmas day with severe diarrhoea and vomiting, unable to keep food and fluids down whilst experiencing fever and fainting episodes. This lasted well into Boxing day. We emailed The Heathcock on Boxing day morning, to advise them of this asking for acknowledgement and for a return phone call (I couldn't get through to them on phone). They did not call me or acknowledge the email. Only doing so after we had already reported to Environmental Health and they had a visit to inspect their kitchen. They then emailed, blaming their supplier. Which in essence is attempting to absolve themselves of the obligation they have to serve food that is safe to consume. Environmental health are now involved and are investigating the food poisoning issues (they had advised us it is likely norovirus from the oysters served). Unfortunately their email of apology leaves much to be desired in addressing the extent of upset, discomfort and disruption caused by eating at the restaurant. Unfortunately, it is in keeping with the previous communications we have had with The Heathcock... overall absent. Their lack of care for customer experience is negligent and I have ongoing concerns about their food hygiene standards. I will not be returning to the restaurant and would advise everyone to also steer clear. There are so many restaurants in Cardiff that provide great food with great customer experience, not returning here will be of no detriment to us. Unfortunately the damage is done.

Lovely pub and beer garden, great selection of ales and ciders. The food is very special, you'll be pushed to find better food in Cardiff. Recently had (amongst other things) the homemade gnocchi with mushrooms... still thinking about it! Yum.

So badly managed and organised gastropub. The building is lovely and split in two halves, the pub lounge and restaurant. The pub area is always too busy so you struggle to get a table and the restaurant is always empty. Open the place up so you can sit anywhere and allow food to be served anywhere like a modern pub restaurant. It’s crazy that pubs still have a restaurant and ‘lounge’ area in this day and age, especially when the restaurant is empty and people don’t come in as there’s no pub tables free. This will get worse as the BBC housing estate is populated. The food appears too bizarre for my taste and as much as I respect the food direction, there needs to be more popular meal options. The empty restaurant is my evidence. We tried to hook a family meal here and that was disastrous. The booking was taken by phone. They promised an email to take our order but it never arrived. Upon calling they said they hadn’t booked our table but offered one at an unsuitable hour due to young children. causing us to not be able to attend. Everything feels like it’s all about the food and not about the business. Except I never see anyone eating the food. Please readdress your business model as this could be a phenomenal experience and a goldmine for the owners. Why not put the restaurant upstairs and the pub in the whole of the downstairs serving more accessible food? I want this place to succeed. It needs a fresh perspective.

So much was lovely but the food was very mixed. Our group of four were relaxed and happy and not concerned with timings Happy to be in good company in a convivial pub we had visited before, with welcoming staff. We were brought complimentary bread and butter and salmon as they said they were running late. A lovely gesture- but we were very happy catching up and had not noticed the time ! What we did notice when the food came was very generous portions but that the food was over seasoned- especially the main courses. Fish and meat. The delicious main ingredients couldn’t shine because of this which was a shame. As it was a special occasion we did not tell the team at the time - so they didn’t have a chance to address. It is a challenging time for all restaurants and service industries so I was reluctant to make the criticism- but hopefully things will be better on a further visit. Thank you to the charming waiting staff .

Best gastropub food in Wales. Thoroughly enjoyed our family dinner and the service was fantastic. Thanks to all the hard working staff. We started with the bread which was fresh out of the oven delicious and had the gnocchi and the chicken ham and leek pie for mains. The gnocchi was delicious but the pie was absolutely outstanding. Served with cabbage and fries, it is a dish that our family will talk about for a very long time. It is a gorgeous pub as well and we will definitely eat and drink here again.

Wow, what an absolute food dream! The Heathcock is bar the best restaurant, dining and food experience I have had in all my travels and entire life. How lucky I am to have stumbled across this hidden gem in a Google search. Walking into the venue, it had a relaxed, warm and cosy UK pub vibe. The dining room, though, felt elegant and charming, which matched the food being served. Although travelling solo, I booked in for the Sample Tasting Menu and what a truly delightful and memorable experience it was. Each dish consisted of the best and highest quality ingredients, which all married together perfectly to create mouthwatering creations that had me unable to put down my spoon and fork. Each dish was fresh and flavoursome, and you could tell a great deal of thought, love, and care had gone into making them from scratch. The service was equally exceptional, and it felt like you were in a 5-star restaurant but in the comfort of a home. The Sample Tasting Menu was every bit worth the cost and it's still food I dream of often. If I could, I would jump back onto a plane to Wales for this food alone. A huge congratulations and my gratitude to the team at The Heathcock for creating a food menu of dreams.

The food is always great. I messed up ordering a main not to my taste and looked at my Mum's dish which was my other choice droolingly so my brother had 2 helpings of the main which he greatly enjoyed. The first course was massive and delightful 😊 so I was happily full on the first course so I didn't mind my brother having my main. So next time I will order what my Mum had. The time before I came for lunch and we shared a load of little dishes which were delicious. The staff were great and tried to see what was wrong but as it was my mistake I told them it was my mistake and that my brother was happy having 2 mains. I love visiting my only sibling in Cardiff so I can visit this pub with amazing food.

We chose the Heathcock to celebrate our anniversary as we had previously very much enjoyed a meal here. However, last night’s experience fell well below expectations! We had made it very clear upon booking that it was our anniversary, this was not recognised at all by the restaurant. The servers were friendly, but the service was pedestrian! We had to wait a full 40 minutes for our starter and then nearly an hour for our mains. The starters were delightful. The mains, however, were very disappointing. The hanger steak had three minuscule cubes of potato and was immersed in some kind of salsa/guacamole mix… that I wouldn’t even put on nachos! My husband ordered the pork dish. This was tasty but in three bites it was gone! Upon payment, the server apologised for the poor service we had received (without any encouragement from us) and yet the service charge was still applied!! We didn’t stay for dessert due to the issues mentioned above. The Heathcock has the potential to be a very special restaurant… but currently it’s too inconsistent with service and quality/quantity of food.

The worse experience I’ve ever had in 64 years! My husband ordered steak med/well. The order was taken but it was served rare/blue and the whole plate of food was cold. He rightly complained and they took his plate away. Next the manager came over to explain that the sauce with the meal would split if any heat was put into it (serve it separately then?). Next his food reappeared with the same pieces of steak (less one he has started cutting) the plate was very hot and looking at the food it would appear that they had just microwaved his meal. One piece of meat was all sinew and fat and the other looked like it had been nuked and was totally inedible. He complained again and I will be honest and say his voice was loud and forceful but he was pretty disgusted that a restaurant of that supposed quality would respond to getting it wrong by getting it even more wrong (it would seem the chef can’t take criticism and wanted to teach him a lesson). The rest of us had nearly finished our meal by now and he said he didn’t want a replacement meal. In fairness the manager did try to persuade him to have something else but he said he would just prefer to have dessert as we had finished and it was too late. Our table was cleared away and then the manager came over and told him that the complete bill was being wiped that they were not prepared to serve any of us with dessert and would like us to leave as she said he had been rude to her and the staff. I can honestly say my husband has not been rude to anyone and was certainly not rude to any staff. Yes he complained. Yes his complained was direct and to the point but he didn’t shout, he didn’t swear, he didn’t make any comments re the staff his only comments were about the food and these were more than justified. We were a group of 4 people in their 60s who have plenty of experience of dining out and have never in our lives been subjected to such a bizarre and extreme reaction to making a complaint about badly prepared and served food. Heathcock you got this one badly wrong had you served us dessert we would happily have paid the bill (minus the one meal) and would not have written a review but there you go instead you lost money and got a bad review into the bargain. No need to ban us we would never darken your door again.

Visited on a Friday night as guests of locals. We have visited several times before so we were looking forward to it. And it did not disappoint. The place was buzzing, from the bar to the garden to the restaurant, there was hardly a space to be had. Starters were very good cooking - whether it was Welsh Rarebit or Rabbit. We did the sharing mains. Chicken and leek pie, and the biggest sea bass I’ve seen in a restaurant. All perfectly cooked and full of flavour. Desserts were similarly impressive. Service from Natalie was welcoming, knowledgeable, smiley and prompt. Good beers and decent wine. All in all, for 60 a head, and a totally enjoyable evening it was good value for money. We look forward to coming back.

We visited The Heathcock as a party of 6 last night. It didn't start well our waiter was from Australia & despite being friendly towards him he didn't respond or attempt to engage in conversation with us. We ordered some wine & had to ask twice where was it before eventually it turned up thanks to the young man behind the bar who corrected the situation with a smile. We asked for some bread which was really good incidentally & I asked for some oil to go with it. Our waiter said there is no oil I asked if he would go the kitchen & ask there as all good kitchens have olive oil. He returned saying there was so oil!!! Starters came but he had mixed up the order & I had to wait for mine, my friends obviously carried on as we didn't want their food to go cold. All the starters were good & when my grilled mackerel came I couldn't fault it. I ordered with my friend the Gurnard baked in salt for 2 people. The fish came he served my friend first & she noticed how small her potion was considering the size of the fish mine was exactly the same. Although the fish was cooked really well the waiter ruined it there were large chunks of rock salt in the flesh & lots of bones. Mine was so bad I had to send in back & was offered a lemon sole instead which was good. 4 of us ordered dessert & they were very good. Our complaint is not about the food but about the service & the lack of skill from our waiter when filleting our fish. The food & wine served is expensive & we expected better especially as we have dined at there sister restaurant The Hare & Hounds in Aberthin & always had great food & service. Would I go back to The Heathcock no & talking in the taxi going home neither would my friends.

Lovely starter and dessert, but the mains are WAY too salty. I can put my own salt on. Also, I don't see why I can't have a medium steak. They only serve rare and medium rare. Speaks volumes of an arrogant chef.

Pretty disappointing lunch with my wife and both our parents visiting Cardiff. Waited nearly 2 hours from arrival for our mains, had to go up to the bar to order more drinks, and when it did finally arrive the steak pie was overcooked. The rest of our mains were fine and we knew the sharing plates take a little longer, but 1hr 50 mins was quite frustrating especially to be overcooked, then paying that sort of price. Had been recommended by a friend but we won't be back.

I've been a very regular customer at this shop for many years. And they always sell lots of lovely stuff. And every time I go in, if something catches my eye, I will buy it. But sometimes I still feel uncomfortable when I go in there. The atmosphere can be a bit 'frosty' sometimes, depending on who is working on the day. I find the lack of eye contact a bit off-putting. This makes the experience of shopping in such a lovely shop a bit of a downer. I get the impression that they think people visiting this shop are potential shoplifters. Which I think is really insulting. Sadly, this can be the way of these type of shops. They need to get over themselves and be more welcoming, appreciative and trusting of their regular customers!

Came across this place after walking around and finding a lot of chain restaurants which we didn't really want. My friend and I had a pasta, bread and a bottle of wine, all of which were lovely. I thought it was well priced compared to some Italian restaurants I've been to recently. One thing, I've looked at its website and it doesn't show a menu. I'd like to bring some friends here but I know they'd like to see the menu first. I, however would definitely come here again.
