The Halfway in Cardiff

Ordered Welsh Rarebit. When it arrived it was on the thinnest, cheapest bread I've seen for a long time. Looked like it had been frozen. To add insult to injury, when I returned it for a refund, I got a lot of attitude from the barmaid. Pulling faces to her colleagues as if I was being awkward. This place has unfortunately gone downhill.

We have just moved into the area and have been trying the local pubs. The HalfWay was very pleasant - lots of space, good pint and I'm intrigued by the skittle alley so will definitely be visiting again.

Excellent experience overall. Stopping on nearby camp site. Phones to ask if they did food and they said yes and booked us a table. Excellent service at bar and good offer on pie meals. Food very good and price very reasonable. Would definitely visit again

Have known this pub for decades, and it's the best it's ever been!

Had a drink before international rugby game and returned in the evening. Despite being very busy the service was quick and efficient. The burgers were tasty! Excellent choice of beers. Always enjoy a visit to this pub. Recommended to visit.

We'd been out walking by the rivee and were wet and soggy. We were on the way back to our hotel but came across the pub en route. We decided to grab a pint and warm up. Then we saw it was Pie Day Friday and thought let's have some supper too. The beer was welcome, the pies were great and the atmosphere was brilliant (in the build up to the rugby). When we'd finished, it was a pretty quick journey back to our hotel.

A well run traditional pub that caters for all. Bar staff are always friendly and helpful and there is always someone clearing tables and checking on orders. Even when it's busy you don't get lost in the crowd

Tuve un almuerzo encantador con mi marido que era delicioso. Llevó a nuestro perro después de un paseo. La mitad era tan agradable para los perros que dieron un tazón de agua tan pronto como entramos. Definitivamente volveremos.

Great helpful and friendly bar staff. Excellent food - reasonably priced and exceptionally helpful with my gluten free diet. Dog friendly, cosy pub. Particularly loved the exceptional customer service.

awful cook dinner paid £16 for a beef cooked dinner the meat was not cooked meat meat it was so rubbery and all the vege was over cooked so not on not happy at all .

Lovely local pub, with the community at the heart of the establishment. Love that some of the staff speak Welsh and that they have bilingual menus.

We attended fore a wake for a family member and treated with warmth, compassion and dedication. The staff were excellent ( as was the beer, love me a Rev James ) and the buffet was delicious

Great, friendly, service and plenty of great beers on tap. Lots of homemade dishes on the menu - ham, egg(2) and chips is a proper plateful and under a tenner - and food was delivered quickly and was hot and delicious.

I visited on Friday 6/9/24 afternoon and had excellent service. I returned for the evening with my wife and discovered that there were a lot of football fans there for the match so it was busy. The three ladies behind the bar were working like whirling dervishes, service was excellent & our meals arrived quickly. I was so impressed that I have returned.(Saturday 7th Sept). Well done all bar & kitchen staff.🤠🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Used this place as a regular watering hole as part of Cardiff Softball for the last 3 years. Jade and her team are fantastic and have always looked after us really well. Couldn't imagine going anywhere else post games and training now!

What a lovely, friendly spot for a first visit! We’re Canadians who just wanted a quick pint and to soak up the local atmosphere. It was busy, vibrant, and made even better by the number of dog owners with their lovely little pooches sitting beside them. Will come back one day!

Passed 2 nearby pubs before deciding on this one. Good decision: the full range of Brains beers and enough other customers to give the place a pleasantly vibrant feel, yet not crowded. Superb map of the area on the wall.

We had a lovely couple of hours at the Halfway Hotel. The staff were super friendly and very helpful. The fact that the pub is dog friendly is such a plus! We will definitely come again!

Great pub! We have been a few times recently for a pint, and although it only does Brains SA and Brains Bitter, they have always been in great condition. Very friendly staff and good atmosphere. We've watched a few of the football games here and there are several TVs in the main bar, with seats with a good view. We shared the nachos sharer plate which was very nice and a good size for the price. Only comment is myself wanting more Real Ale, but other than that it is a great pub

Honestly wouldn’t go here if there weren’t so few options in Pontcanna. Beer selection is dreadful and overpriced but at least it shows sport. A mediocre Brains/Marstons pub. Avoid on rugby days though.

New to the area. We had stumbled across this pub and had food on 2 occasions. The food and customer service was amazing. We had friends over from London and decided to that Chance late in the evening to see if food was still be in served. This Friday evening the pub was very lively what we had experienced. However our experience this time was not what we were use to. To be greeted coldly, ignored and treated like crap. I approached a lady behind the bar with black hair, who blanked us until I had to loudly say excuse me. Nothing blank, no smile. I asked is food still be in served. Just a NO kitchen closed 5mins ago (20:45) which I completely understand. I simply asked a question is there any local food establishment do they recommend still serving food. To be answered bluntly a co-op. And how should she know what other kitchens closing times were.Wow... We were all shocked with her attitude we all work in the Hospitality and Catering background. I myself a Front Office Manager can't even imagine talking to any customer like that. A simple No sorry, I am not aware. It simply wouldn't happen and I expect all my associates to go above and beyond to assist all customer needs regardless. We dared to ask for a drink, it left a sour taste in our mouths we decided to leave. Which I guess was meant to be as we Found this amazing friendly, welcoming pizza and beer food street across the co-op which I highly recommend, for the food and it's customer service. After this encounter we shall not be returning.

The food is OK, just the standard to be expected from a British pub. Beers are on the expensive side. But it has Sky so good for football if that's your thing.

In the interest of honesty I will say that I have previously left a negative review for The Halfway after a bad meal and bad experience. After several correspondence emails between myself and the manager I was invited back to give the food and experience another chance. And it was definitely worth going back! The staff were brilliant and the food was awesome. We had the lamb shank roast, beef roast and gammon and all meals were perfect. The deserts were to die for, absolutely lovely and they serve a great pint of Guinness 😀. Dogs being welcome make this the perfect pub for my family so we will definitely be going back and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a good pub with great food.

Delicious homemade Sunday dinner, served hot. Always a great pint to have here. Nice friendly staff, always with a smile on their faces. Great atmosphere here for the rugby on Saturday as well. 10/10 would recommend. It's a nice treditional locals pub.

Great local pub. Unpretentious food, great service good beer selection. Looking forward to the next trip.

Stupid...I mean stupid expensive. Food OK at best, but, did I say expensive? Ale OK...but did I say expensive? So conclusion...stupid expensive in case you didn't get it first time. Spend similar money elsewhere, but at least you won't feel stupid.

Really nice pub. The staff are all fantastic. The chefs do a great job, and if you like reading menus, there's loads of them to choose from. The food is all very high quality.

Great team in The Halfway. Open to the public on Christmas day, for longer than 2 hours! Staff work very hard there & the pre-ordered Christmas dinners looked & smelled unbelievable, was a jealous man of the people eating.

I popped in for a spot of lunch, i decided to opt for the lamb rogan josh, absolutely delicious, full of flavor and piping hot, washed down with one of the best pints of Brains bitter i've had in a long while! Jade and the team were so welcoming and bring a nice relaxing atmosphere to a cracking Cardiff pub. I'll definitely pop in when in Pontcanna and plan on visiting on a Sunday as I've heard the Sunday lunch is fantastic!

Had delicious roast pork lunch with all the trimmings at The Halfway today.. friendly and helpful staff made it really enjoyable. Looking forward to my next visit.

Visited The Halfway on Sunday 12th November for a roast dinner. Arrived at 2.30 and was told the lamb and beef was off the menu . So there was a choice of pork chicken or nut roast. Decided.on the pork. What a disappointment. Very greasy plate of food. Pork bits was full of fat and the sage and onion ball needed hammer and chisel to get into it. The 'veg' was dire. Parsnip burnt, the one small piece of carrot overcooked the tiniest piece of broccoli seen better days. Unedible. Sent it back and had a refund. Waitress/manager was apologetic, I think.

All of the food here is great. The landlady has a bit of a hobby for writing a new menu every few days so there's always something new to try. The Sunday roasts, and their sandwich menus are both worth a look, but if you're not that hungry, they have a really good line up of soups as well. They play the footie and rugby games, the staff are always friendly, and there's a really nice atmosphere.

Had the pleasure of meeting The Halfway at a charity do once. He was surprisingly down to earth, and VERY funny.

If you’re somebody that loves a real and authentic pub this is exactly the place to visit. The Halfway has such a strong community feeling in Pontcanna and you really get the sense of everybody knows everybody but that everyone feels welcome. It’s definitely one of the most well priced pubs in the Pontcanna/Canton area and their Sunday roasts are second to none and it’s not often you get a homemade yorkie so that’s a really special touch! It’s food is all homemade and that makes such a difference! I have so many happy memories in this pub and it really is such a hidden gem in Cardiff.
