The Haywain in New Forest

A group of five of us, 4 adults and a teenager, visited here last week for lunch. We were on a short trip to the New Forest in awful weather and searching for lunch. We were greeted promptly and courteously and shown to a table. Service was quick and cheerful; choice of food was excellent and staff made a particular "tweak" for our autistic teenager. The food was hot and delicious. A good "find".

Lovely friendly restaurant with good selection of carvery items. Staff are always welcoming and our meal was delicious!! Will visit again

Decided to have a celebratory meal for my son's 18 th birthday and my god this place has gone down hill. We soon realised there was something wrong when the carpark was completely empty on a Saturday... The food was dry including my son's burger that I sent back , Ive seen much better microwave burgers. The veg had been left out so long it dried out . Every meal was overcooked, honestly! I was absolutely gob smacked how bad this was , how hard is it to cook a burger or even vegetables. Won't be going back anytime soon

The food was the nicest its ever been! The only downfall was It says "beat the que" on the table signs by ordering through the app. But when we waited for over 10 mins and asked the waitress we were told they were sorry but the bar was busy! Defeats the object! It also wasn't clear you need to show the carver your phone as what you had purchased online. I had clicked off it and then had to ask them to print me off a receipt to prove what I had ordered! Confusing method but again, the food itself was the best it's been!

Went to the haywain for some food on a Sunday and the service was amazing , was served by a lovely Alex on the bar who was very polite . The food was amazing and atmosphere made it a great experience.

Waited 45 minutes for burger to come out not advertised of the wait when the burger came out the pulled pork that was in it was so cold it felt frozen the girl that served us was very polite and took the food back to get it resolved but had to then wait again

Our visit was awful. It started with "sit anywhere you like just not there as it's dirty" the restaurant was almost empty. Drink were brought to the table and spilt over 2 guests. There was an apology but no real care about the fact a glass of red wine had been spilt on clothing. The food, off the menu rather than carvery, was not good. The veggie pizza was pretty plain and the burgers were dry. We ordered desserts but they were forgotten about until we chased them. This is the worst visit I have ever had to this restaurant. My friends visiting from our office town have also sent a review. Each time they visited the bar to order the staff were sat talking to their friends rather than taking any real interest in the guests

The carvery is good value for money. The only thing I would say is there needs to be better check of the tables. There was no salt and pepper on the table.

Carvery for a late lunch. All food was cooked well, and all fresh. Busy place so could just forgive lack of sauces available and messy gravy station.

We pre-booked, 4 of us. There was no greeting at the door although there was a sign. You now have to register your vehicle for parking (this is at the bar). We ordered drinks and found a table, the drinks were bought to us, sadly were spilt on arrival although replaced. Minimal concern for the two of us who had drinks spilt on them! Ordering is at the bar, that was fine and the starters were lovely. Mains took time to arrive however we had to request the starter plates were removed. Food was basic, chips only warm, burger bland, overcooked chicken burger, no care taken on presentation. As for the pizza that was so bland. We were left with our plates again until we ordered dessert and paid.....They then forgot the desserts, we had to ask for them which made us late for our planned evening. If the staff had paid as much attention to the paying customers as they did to their friends.....Very disappointed! We will not return

Came to have breakfast/brunch with family. Not been here for many many years and I am afraid to say it will be many years before I return again. Paid what seems a bargain price for a pub breakfast, but I suppose that you get what you pay for. Got given a plate with dried food on it, got a replacement - same again, got a third. Others in the party were the same, as were other guests in front and behind us. Queued up for food, hardly any choice was available. By the time more came out, what we had was cold. No specials available as on menu. Sausages were pale and obviously made from snouts and arses. Bacon limp, fatty & not far off barely cooked. Filter coffee????? Would rather drink gravy. Apart from the woman who greeted us as we walked in and the woman behind the till, all of the other staff looked and sounded absolutely miserable. I realise that hospitality is an extremely hard place to work, but come on Stonehouse. Not really sure why these situations arose. Can’t say whether this is the normal standards for this pub. or why their standards were set so low. I’ve been to other Stonehouse pubs at other meal times and been left extremely satisfied.

I love this place and visit whenever I'm in the area. It's great to fill your stomach at the start of day before heading out for walks in the new forest. Or to end your day here after a day out in the fresh air. Great place to refuel your body.

Arrived and taken to a dirty table, which then needed to be emptied and cleaned, not ideal with a toddler in toe. The carvery station was a mess, and every couple of minutes you could just hear the staff behind the bar shouting “next” to serve the next customer. The disabled toilet was locked which is just a breach of someone’s rights to a bathroom in a reasonable timeframe. Why do you lock this? It makes it so inaccessible for disabled people and those with small children. Perhaps the money spent on the Carpark cameras should have been invested in the restaurant itself in the first instances. Terrible Mother’s Day meal.

Good service. Carvery was nice and everything was cooked nicely. Front of house staff friendly and helpful.

I was in for 12,30pm yesterday.although busy,the food was really good gammon was exelent.

Tasty carvery served 7 days a week! We will definately revisit when in the area! Blue light discount too! Update: I have revisited and Pepsi Max is £4.20, more expensive than most other drinks on the menu! Would advise patrons to check the online menu before ordering as soft drinks are not on the drinks menu. I am not a happy bunny.

Met up with some friends here. The food was really good and hot. Will definitely visit again.

Breakfast is always perfect and decided to try the carvery and wasn’t disappointed. Good value.

Absolutely shocking from the moment we walked in. Booked in advance to make sure we didn't miss out on a table added that we needed a high chair. Walked in with a sign on a desk stating grab a table and order at the bar. Spoke with a member of staff who couldn't be less interested explained we booked. I was told just grab a table we don't take bookings even tho there was 5 or 6 tables with reserved on them. After a while we and put an order in for 6 people with drinks bar tender didn't know what pinto was. Sat and waited for food for a member of staff to vome over and say they had run out of pizza dough and would we want to wait 10min or choose something else said we were ok to wait. A while later 2 meals came out and the 2 pizzas will be along shortly under 2 year old had eaten his full meal and the adult meal was eaten before 2 pizzas arrived no sign of an apology no futher customer service from sever which was probably for the best as 1 lady wanted an ice cream machine out of mix filled up by staff told wait 10 mins to return and staff had forgotten to turn machine on complete incompetence. After we had all finished went back to bar to get the free kids dessert to be told it would cost extra but it states on menu dessert included in price ar you needed to put the dessert on at point of ordering but we can charge you for it. At this point no more money was going in to such a poorly run establishment even tho 5 desserts were about to be added. To the management get a grip of your staff Absolutely disgraceful who ever your fron of houses is she couldn't care less if your customers are happy or not she will run the place in to the gutter. Reply to so called owner: Read all of my past reviews they are always factual and i never exaggerate on any bad or good parts. Your staff are a pack of liars from who ever she was waiting tables to the 2nd guy behind the bar as for the so called manager Diana or Dana im guess that was them sat around other side of yhe bar shouting. Also amazes me that even the regulars were not happy his car reg hadn't been added to the carpark watch. I will now be escalating this issue with head office

We had a bad experience a few months ago so was nervous about going back, but I'm glad we did. Excellent food, staff all lovely we really enjoyed it this time thank you

Was really pleased with our visit here. Absolutely amazing service from JESS. She's a star, we couldn't get the voucher working but she didn't give up and managed to sort it. This place has gone from bad to worse. Booked online, on arrival booking was confirmed we were shown to a table. So far so good. Food and drink was ordered at the bar, which took an age. The customer in front of me ordered three coffees and the coffee machine is inadequate for the size of the restaurant and the member of staff could not do two things at once. Ordered from the 2 course set menu, 2 tomato soups and 2 fish and chips. We then waited almost an hour for the soups. I enquired if we had been forgotten only to be told there was a delay with the food. We already knew that from experience. Eventually the soup arrived but not as per the menu. Instead of the mozzarella pinwheel pizza bread we both received a dry slice of white bread with a portion of butter. Soup was tasty and just warm enough. The server told us she would come back and check that we were ready for the fish and chips. A long time after finishing the soup another member of staff came to the table to inform us they had run out of fish. This was almost 90 minutes after we had ordered it. Incredible! The same member of staff informed us that they could offer us something else off the menu but there was a long wait for food. We decided to get a refund which we got minus the cost of two soups and a cola. No offer of good will by way of an apology, just a verbal "sorry guys about this but we had not expected it to be so busy". More importantly, they waited until we had finished our soups before telling us that the fish had run out. Surely, they should have known at the time of ordering that they were running low on fish. The Haywain used to be a good place to dine, but not any more.

Think the chef forgot how to make pizza as it took him a long time.

The poor overworked staff were lovely but the food took an she to come- about an hour I think and we were not warned about it. It was very cheap though and although my pizza wasn't that tasty it was ok. The calorie count for all meals is enormous. My husband's ham egg and chips was around 2500 and it cape with apple pie!

The freindly staff and great food made it a really lovely time to catchup with our freinds who we had not seen for 30 years! It was a great time. Thankyou.

Went today 11 02 2024 , great meal came away stuffed . If I had to mark it down it was only because it was soo busy had to stand waiting to be served with our carvery. Well worth it though and great value for money .

Lovely food, good value for money and staff are friendly, but the interior is looking very scruffy. The paint work is chipped, and floor boards are a bit broken

Great place for friday night food and beer

Breakfast not full English as some items missing, no one seemed to care which resulted in us requesting our money back and we left, this happened a few weeks ago, only just had time to do review. We were regular customers but have not been back since due to hearing locally bad reviews. Sad to say the haywaine has seen better days in the past. It is sad to see how run down it has become, looking very dated and needs a good clean. And a change of management, although I believe this has happened but not for the better.

Its a shame, the food was lukewarm.

Worst pub and restaurant experience I've ever had. Went in for a roast with our daughter. Was greeted by a very unpleasant lady in gym leggings. We did think she was the manager if so she was very under dressed and should sort that out she should look professional. When sat at table all we could hear was swearing and rude words coming from bar and kitchen. My daughter went to get a food and asked about the food and was spoke to in a very rude way by the guy carving the food. I will be going to there head office and taking this further. What a shame use to be a great place. Will never go again.

Not letting the food go cold and gravy all lumpy and not given out enough meat when you pay for a large carvary how ever the pizza is amazing

Very friendly staff, visited many times the last occasion they were a bit slow replacing the food for the carvery and the carver could've smiled a bit but possibly short staffed, still good quality service.

The staff on the carvery even though empty, very unfriendly. The meat quality was very poor with fatty meat given and even when replaced very poor. The veg was not refilled and quite poor quality with mash being watery and other veg dried out. Seem to be unable to get your order correct, so my son had to wait for his pizza after everyone else had there meal. Bar & Table staff seemed friendly and welcoming. I know it's not the most expensive, but paying over £10 for a carvery I expect better. Unfortunately the place has got worse the more you pay.

I go here regularly with my friend and we always have a decent meal , which is always cooked well whenever we go in . The people are really friendly. The waitress is always smiling and interacts with positive energy and the chef is a good laugh . All in all we usually have a good experience here 😁

the roast is lovely,could be bit hotter did find one dirty fork think knife and forks should be wrapped up so people don’t touch them and please check to make sure there clean

On the visit we have noticed their has been some changes in staffing and the staff we saw on the 18/1/24 was very per light and curious we visited regularly in the past but problems back then was not great but the visit on the 18th what a difference food was great cooked well \ the wife did have a Moan at the meat server side of it not getting as much on the plate like we had in the past she did have a word with the server and she did put a little more on the plate in the end all other staff was good in showing are seating we also noticed the cleanness of the floor and windows ? windows need a paint job seating was a little worn but as you get loads of people trough the door its under sustainable of the place toilet where clean the car park well that needs a problem need to be completed Pot holes again at the front of the Main entrance all other building looked ok thank you Stonehouse Cadman

Haven't been to the Haywain for a long time so decided to pop in for a carvery. Absolutely delicious. We're booked in for Christmas Day lunch and I have to say if the food and service are as good as today I'll be VERY HAPPY 🎄 Another delicious carvery even better it was a half price deal 😋

The food, from variety of options on the menu (as long as your not dieting and as an omnivore family) to taste of the dishes we had, was really quite good. The service was good enough, all friendly but with an order at bar approach service was mostly delivery with a smile. The atmosphere on a Sat lunch was rather subdued.

Had a breakfast from here using the Toogoodtogo app. Was delicious - with all the things you'd wish for in a breakfast; eggs, bacon, beans, hash browns, fried bread, waffles, black pudding, tomatoes, sausages. Didn't eat in, but the restaurant looked clean and comfortable and the staff were very helpful and friendly.

The food and service were both fantastic as always i frequently come to the haywain with my 2 young boys 9 and 6 and they love the bottomless help yourself ice-cream and the play park out the back. The food has always been of high standard and so have the staff. Atmosphere is lovely

Went here with friends for a catch-up. There was plenty of seating and parking and the restaurant was clean and well-ordered. We had the set menu which is a good value for the amount of food you get. The breaded chicken starters were very nice, but when the burgers arrived, all of them had half-burned buns. The beef was a little dry and the lettuce was lacking. The chips also tasted a little stale and bland and really needed the additional sauces. The brownies, when they eventually arrived, were a little chewy and lacked great taste. The mocktail we tried was, however, delicious. The waiting staff were generally very friendly and obliging and the place felt welcoming and comfortable. Overall, the place and staff were great, but some of the food left a lot to be desired.

When we got there the guy couldn’t find are booking so was told to just find a table then we thought we would have the festive menu and then told we had not booked for that so your web site needs to be clearer but the manager was called and she was very helpful and did her best to do the food we wonted then when to get are festive carvery and I ask for pigs in blankets and was told I had not payed for them but no one asked if we wonted them when we payed so we where looking fowerd to are meal but felt very very disappointed from the time we walk in the door

Nice cosy atmosphere, temperature about right, not too hot.

Terrible quality food, dried up veg not enough choice, miserable server who wanted to give me strags of turkey from one side that was down to bone and when I said I wanted the other side his face hit the floor. I would not recommend the Haywain untill they get someone in to get the kitchen staff in order. They need to be whipped into shape then possibly it would be good.

Lovely food and staff. Went when it was pretty busy for a sunday carvery and standards didn't drop. Decent prices too!

We arrived after booking online to find that you were only cooking carvery. Two of us didn't want carvery so left. What kind of place only cooks carvery? This is the 2nd we have been here and moat of the food wasn't available or carvery only. There will not be a 3rd time. We went to happy cheese instead and had an amazing meal and will be going there in future.

Lovely carvery, full of taste and plenty of choice even at 7pm! Spot on, and would recommend popping in here, plenty of tables and a nice clean pub. The staff even asked the kids running around as if it was a playground to take a seat which was a refreshing change.

Absolutely nothing was good service was horrendous we left after being seated. Staff had attitude pointed at qr code and told us to order, there was no menu we had to find waiter for menu who then threw on table, we were reminded we only had an hour as was busy this is after we waited in car for half an hour as we turned up early and there was no bar to wait at what a disgusting thing to say to customers..... Then the queue for food was 10 mins just to order! But hey apparently we had to do this all in and hour after waiting in my car for half an hour. Then sat next to a dog in a food established safe to say I will not be recommending or going back. Thankyou for ruining my first year anniversary meal we booked this a week in advance as well. Get a bloody waiting area for customers when busy .... Common sense says you would get more money from drinks while they wait.... And keep dogs out of main restaurant area.

After a nice local walk we decide to pop in for a couple of drinks. After paying a fortune for some drinks my partner opened up a 99p packet of Haribo bought from the spa opposite. The loud, I presume owner, came over to us and said we can't eat them in there. For God's sake we had bought drinks, the bad had about 9 sweets in. What a joke. We have moved nearby and won't be going there again as our local. Totally inappropriate for a bad of a few sweets. Update in response to the managers pathetic response we had three large bags of sweets. She really need to look closer. We had a small bag of haribo from the spa and then a frozen sticky toffee pudding and a pot of cream from the local garden centre. We certainly were not going to try and heat it up from frozen and poor cream over it on the table. We had just taken it out of the bag to read its heating instructions for when we were home in a few minutes. The lack of any customers skills at this place is shocking.

We booked a table for 4 for Sunday carvery. The food was good , I had just finished my last mouthful and the waitress said we have to leave as the next people were waiting.. we still had full drinks let alone wanting a dessert but she said take your drinks outside..absolutely disgusting. They should learn to space out their table bookings to allow people to enjoy a whole dinner experience not to be told to take our drinks out in the rain with having a dessert.. never going back there. I you book, book 2 tables for an hour apart so when they tell you to leave you can continue your meal on other booked table 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Drove from Portsmouth for a carvery. Found it was closed due to "missing parts". I understand that these things happen....JUST PUT IT ON THE WEBSITE!

On the Haywain website I booked an 1145 lunch for a party of 3 and requested a particular table. At 1130 I received a call from a Haywain staff member saying as 3 staff had gone sick there would be no pizza or burgers available. I arrived at 1140 where my two friends were waiting in the car park. There was a sign on the door saying the premises didnt open until 1200. I tapped on the window and a staff member (the same one that telephoned me) and I said our table was booked for 1145. A chef also came to the door and said that wasnt possible to book it for that time. Well it was and still is in spite of the chef saying the regional manager had changed the website so only tables can be booked from 1200. I have an email confirming my 1145 table and I have just gone on the site again and still allows me to book an 1145 table. I said can we come in and have a coffee while we're waiting for the carvery to open. The chef said no as the coffee machine wasnt ready, then it was ready but then said we still couldnt come in as the cleaner hadnt finished. So we had to wait in the carpark for 20 minutes. Others then entered the building before us so we then had to queue to pay for our drink and carvery. The only positive was in spite of them not recognising that our table was booked for 1145, they did reserve the table id requested. How odd how they saw that but not our reservation time. Very stingy on the carvery meat in spite of me paying to "go large". Id recently had a Toby carvery, they were far more generous and the quality and variety of veg was far superior. No english mustard, had to ask for it and wait a few more minutes. Apparently it has been removed as allergy risk. We finally ate at approx 1215.

We had a table booked all week for 16 on arrival we were told they only had carvely are part of the group orderd 3 standard carvelys and one child's carvely (vegetarian) no meat substitute so only able to have vegetables and the baby bowl never came with meat there was only one person serving at the table considering that was only option for food you would have thought there would be more than one. Tiny amount of meat given will not be returning.

We had a table booked. Cane in at 6.15 only to be waiting a good 5 minutes waiting for the lady who was doing the tables to finish talking to customers at nearby table. Haven't been for a while and most Disappointed in the food . The meat was given in incredibly small amounts, although it was very nice , as was the roast potatoes. Unfortunately the rest was extremely poor. The vegetables were awful, especially the cabbage which was cold and barely cooked. The gravy was quite lumpy. Probably will not go back

We all had a very nice time today. The staff were very efficient and looked after us well. We will definatly come back again next year

I understand places get busy on a Sunday so we booked a table for 4. We had to queue at the bar to order which wasn't too long a wait but a totally different story when we went to get the carvery a long wait in a slow moving queue. The food was fine but we had not long fished and one of my friends went to the bar to get a coffee before we decided what to have for dessert, before he had returned we were asked to leave because the next people who had booked that table had arrived. I could see at least 6 empty tables but we had to forsake dessert and finish our drinks outside in the cold. Disappointing experience can't see us returning

Love the traditional nature of this place, good food, good value for money. Dana the manager was an excellent host, would definitely recommend.

I always love going to the Haywain for all you can eat breakfasts. The chips need to be ordered now as they stopped it but it was a nice filling meal.

We stopped for the carvery on our way back from a short break. We got there a little early but were seated straight away (there were others who hadn't booked turned away, which shows how popular the place is). The food was fantastic and the meat servings were generous and we helped ourselves to a wide selection of vegetables. Everything was very tasty and the service was excellent. We will definitely return when we are down that way again.

Went for buffet breakfast with my grandson, plenty of choice but would have liked more egg choices as they were only offering fried egg. Drinks are not included in the price! All in all, a good breakfast. Must mention the best fried bread I have had anywhere with my breakfast!

Great place for a roast dinner and a wide variety of options available for everyone.

Food and service wes enjoyable, seating. Was a bit tight and we were asked to vacate our table after 2 hrs as it was rebooked. This wouldn't have been an issue, but there was nowhere to move to to carry on drinking and chatting.

Lovely roast potatoes tender meat. The cauliflower cheese was a bit raw but everything else was great.

Nice pub with reasonably priced food. Could do with a bit of modernization. But a warm friendly place to go if on a budget. Food is always nice. Staff are friendly and helpful.

Bar staff seemed like they really didn't want to be there. Tables needed clearing. Felt more unwanted because it was busy than appreciated as a customer. Nice garden revamp though

For a breakfast eatery, not gourmet but not bad. Good parking, efficient service from the kitchen to the breakfast bar. Decent filter coffee. Now if the customers could control their infants...or been asked to...would have been 5 stars.

Terrible no carvery available or wraps, so we didn’t stay not even for a drink, the place is dirty, need a desperate refurbishment outdated dark and grim, the car park desperately needs attention, not inviting at all

Breakfast is a standard carvery buffet breakfast.

We were wecomed by the very pleasant staff and purchased our carvery tickets. and drinks. we chose a seat, The carvery had 3 types of meat and I chose the beef as usual because it is tender and perfectly cooked. The many . vegetables were plentiful. Good gravy and horseradish sauce. the meal was delicious. I cannot think of one thing to improve.

A month ago I visited the haywain for a breakfast I was pleasantly surprised after hearing a few mixed opinions I didn’t expect the food to taste so great and the pub to look so clean and smell. I returned on Sunday for a carvery I don’t know what’s happened in the last month but the place was really grubby sticky toilet floors glass smeary bad urine smell once you enter con webs everywhere. I don’t know what’s happened to the cleaner but it just didn’t feel like I was in the same pub/restaurant. This is a place a month ago I would of highly recommend but this is a stay well clear pub now maybe hire new cleaners and chefs will not be returning and will be getting food hygiene to have a good look into
