Nice pub with a relaxed vibe. Good ales. Lovely staff who are on the ball. Shared starter platter was impressive but my buttermilk chicken starter cost £8.25 and consisted of three tiny bites of chicken not much bigger than a Malteser swimming in a sea of BBQ sauce. The only way to describe it is very stingy for the price. Moving on, the cod and chips were good, the steaks were very nice and my pork belly was nice, but again very little pork, mostly sauce and veg. We had bottle of wine and the bill for four came in at £165 plus a tip. Two of the four weren’t drinking and one had no starter or dessert. I would imagine four could easily reach £200 here. A good pub, nice (not great) food. In danger of being over-priced vs quality/quantity.

We came for a celebration on short notice. I called ahead to ask about allergies and they were most accomodating, when we arrived they had marked a menu with what was safe to eat and changes that could be made. Unfortunately 2 of the mains were not very good but when we told the staff they were really lovely and rectified the problem explaining it was a new menu and thanked us for the feedback. Overall even with a slight issue will definitely go again and couldn't fault the staff.

We had the bbq board to share and ordered extra chips but we honestly didn't need the extra chips. It's dog friendly with a doggie bar where you can help yourself to dog treats and water bowls. This country pub is real hidden gem, full of character and an extremely warm welcome. (Our waitress was absolutely lovely and a real credit to the place) Think huge open fireplaces and low wooden beams, a quintessentially old English pub with an impressive menu. We were lucky enough to be seated in front of the fire with a prime view of the lovely pine Christmas tree. At no point were we rushed - the food came at a leisurely pace and we enjoyed the opportunity to soak up the festive atmosphere and relax. Pork belly to start was lovely, and the duck confit and fish and chips were fabulous! There was so much on the menu we fancied trying that we can’t wait to go back for our next meal!

During these troubled times recognition for an enjoyable experience can only be beneficial to the proprietors and staff of that particular establishment , thus this review .After so much time not being able to dine out due to government restrictions our first meal had to be The Haywain, as we used this place on many occasions in the past with satisfaction .We didn't really know what to expect but all our concerns were put to rest on entering. Hand sanitizer at entrance and a one way system in operation. Shown to our table which had be individually shielded. Waitress service only. A personal details form had to be filled in ,phone , e-mail address , time of entering , time of departure. The amount of tables had been dramatically been trimmed down in the restaurant side but the function hall was in use if needed.Nice to see some recognizable faces back to work that we knew from before the virus struck. Plus the new young lady who served us , only her second day and had the makings of a good waitress , obliging , courteous and efficient.Starters , main and desert were enjoyable . Slow cooked brisket with all the trimmings was lovely. Option of one , two or three courses. Nice to see the correct glasses being used to match the drinks . So all in all an enjoyable experience . We will definitely return and hope the business picks up, as this place deserves success for all the hard work they put in.

We had some reservations about the place but after 5 minutes those had disappeared. Very warm welcome and the venue had a very ‘real’ feel about it. Full of character and did not have that manufactured feel about it.Great service and although it was a busy Sunday lunchtime but none of the staff appeared flustered or stressed, all very calm.We all skipped the starters and ploughed straight on with the mains, 4 Top Sirloin beef, a Brisket, Hake and a specially prepared vegetarian meal for my sister who is allergic to garlic and doesn’t do meat!We took the desserts which were top draw. Was given a pretty rubbish table , but disappointing as a couple (walk ins ) were given a nicely located table (for 4) .Food has always been good although chips and potatoes were unusually greasy/fatty today . More than anything just poor customer relations. So much so, we have decided we won’t be returning which is a shame as it’s our local. It’s not a budget pub and I expect a bit more . Our first visit was as it should be but unfortunately things are breaking down somewhere. To add unsult to injury I’m sure we were overcharged. If it’s good food you’re after and not worried about possible lack of customer service(depending who is working )then this is place for you.

We phoned ,and received a similar response to the rest except that we were told that they would open the function room for us...... Booking a spur of the moment Sunday lunch is a precarious thing and finding a hostelry with vacancies does not always suggest quality. In this instance we were not disappointed with the Haywain. A very friendly bright atmosphere with courteous and friendly staff, the food was in the style of good home cooking. The lamb was tender and the beef succulent particularly if you liked it medium rare. The veggies can often be a let down, too crunchy, but here they were just right. We didn’t have a starter opting for a ‘pud’ and the sticky toffees and lemon tarts were very tasty and a fitting finale to an excellent Lunch. Oh and the beer was good too! Price wise it was very competitive, with the two course meal priced at £17. Don’t want to recommend it as we would like to go again on the spur of the moment but it was very good. Only downside was the stink in the car park from the nearby stream. Fortunately this did not spoil the atmosphere of the pub inside.

Visited The Haywain for a Sunday lunch on recommendation of a friend. The roast beef (good thick slices, not that thin stuff) with traditional trimmings was gorgeous. The service was spot on and friendly helpful staff. During the time we were there the pub gently filled up with local families, all ages and it was lovely. Everyone relaxed, some playing board games, a really cosy happy atmosphere with good food. All the right ingredients for a pleasurable afternoon.

I planned a surprise birthday party for a 30th and spoke with a woman called Rosie, she was very polite and informative and kept intouch with me via email with enquiries. The place has a warm welcome feeling, staff were polite and buffett was lovely. Toilets were clean and they let me put up my own decorations prior to the event with plenty of time. We had a manned bar and the young girl was very polite - always served us with a smile. I asked for drinks from the main bar which they did not have on our seperate bar and they had no problem going to get it. Everyone had a great time. Highly recommend this place

I recently tried this wonderful place for a Sunday Roast with my partner, and have been coming back week after week since. Not only is the roast the best around, but it is paired well with the warm atmosphere and friendly service. Every week our waitress Shelley remembers us and makes us feel welcome. Staff are all very helpful with the menu and are more than willing to cater to our dietary needs and requests. You will be seeing us a lot more thanks!

We had a table immediately in front of the large fireplace for my birthday celebration and by the end of the meal we all stank of soot due to the chimney downdraft! My jacket and trousers are now on the line outside hoping to air the odour away. The meal was reasonable although the selection of vegetables was very limited with only red cabbage and carrots on offer.Previous weekday visits have been hit and miss but Sunday lunches are still worth the visit.

I should have known this was going to be terrible when my Bloody Mary was pretty awful, really watery tomato juice and not a lot of vodka. Starter: Salt and pepper squid - completely tasteless. Awful, I Left most of it. Our friend has fish cakes, bland, my other half’s whitebait was ok.Main course: Zero taste - dry beef brisket, tasteless carrots and red cabbage, not enough cheese on the cauliflower cheese, roast potatoes clearly made from old potatoes so awful, no greens and tasteless brown gravy. Again I Left most of it.As we got the bill they took off my Bloody Mary as a gesture of goodwill, so my friend who was paying went an negotiated the bill down more.Don’t go to this pub for the Sunday roast, it’s truly tasteless and terrible.

Always wanted to try this place since it has changed hands and it did not disappoint! Friendly casual atmosphere and first class food. Classic English grub done to perfection. The chocolate delice with white chocolate mouse was to die for!!! Beautiful presentation too, we will definitely return and try one of their famous Sunday roasts!

It may be a bit off the beaten track for many, but The Haywain is a hidden gem in Tendring. With the look and feel of a traditional country pub, and the standard of cooking you would expect in a decent big city restaurant, this is a great combination.Plenty of parking space, reasonable prices and friendly staff, not phased by last minute bookings on a Saturday night.Well worth a visit, whether for dinner with friends, or a great Sunday lunch.

The pub is run by an old lady who likes a nice chat. It is a real English pub. Great food. You can spend the night here with your camper in the parking lot when you come or go to or from the Ferry in Harwich.
