We go out for a meal locally every Thursday evening and tonight we had the worst meal we have ever experienced. Over cooked very small prawns for a starter each and pathetic portion of ribs on a cold plate for our main course. Apparently they have a new "chef". Well they need to sack him or her. Very embarrassing for the very pleasant bar staff. We won't be troubling them again.

Excellent Sunday lunch and service, 3 of us had roasts, I went with lamb and the other 2 were beef and partner had a couple of small plates. The lamb roast was very large and tasty with excellent service by Mel.

Went on Wednesday night with 4 friends for a pub meal. Main course was very good but we thought the desert portions were a little on the small size for the price.

We found a lovely AirBnB around the corner, drove past the pub en route and decided to try it out. Very pleased we did, all around wonderful service. Great food and atmosphere, staff were especially attentive and extremely friendly. Quite reasonably priced too, would highly recommend !

Lovely Sunday lunch. This was a first time visit and we were not disappointed. Good varied menu We had excellent roasts with all the trimmings, beautifully cooked and very generous portions followed by desserts. Staff are friendly, efficient and attentive. We will certainly return.

I don’t often leave reviews when attending eateries. The money one pays at a gastropub is normally high end. Therefore, the food and service should match. Rarely it does. I’d say the quality of food and exceptional service was a cut above. We had the lamb lasagna, which was plentiful, extremely delicious and unique in texture with generous amounts of lender fat-free lamb meat, not lamb mince. Accompanied by an enormous salad for just £16 - absolute bargain. I’m a regular to Cowfold and used to attend The Crabtree. I visited The Hare & Hounds once for a change of scenery. The two establishments are incomparable on literally every level. If you’re visiting Cowfold, try The Hare & Hounds before anywhere else. Bravo guys, fabulous 👌

I am honestly baffled by the amount of 5* reviews. I have eaten in this pub 3 times now and each time it’s been awful. 1) Fish and chips soggy and greasy. 2) I ordered a steak which came out over cooked. I told the waitress she took it back to the kitchen and then came back out and very sarcastically said “chef says how do you want it, Blue?” I ended up just getting my money back and sat their hungry while my friends ate. 3) I had Mac and cheese which was watery and the pasta was again over cooked. The menu never seems to change with the seasons...who wants to eat chilli in the middle of summer? It’s so frustrating cause it’s local to me but I refuse to have another awful meal. Fine as a drinking pub.

We heard from our friends about the hare and hounds so we thought we would try it!! We had a lovely roast we both had roast beef and really enjoyed it! The young waitress was very friendly and nothing was to much for her! Highly recommended and look forward to coming back

Stopped for Sunday lunch with friends and the food was ok but meal was spoilt by noisy young children running around while their parents got drunk. Staff didn't seem to care. Won't be back.

This is just a crazy pub, it seems to have a different owner every 6 months. Tried it again with a bit of trepidation but this latest owner has managed to produce one of the nicest roast diners ever. Roast turkey with all the trimmings you’d expect. Very high standard. Lovely cauliflower cheese, an extra little jug of gravy was a nice touch too.

arrived 1.15 for lunch and were not sure about size of our party as some were coming a long way (2 hrs).Bar Staff (girl) looked fed up with us arriving, and even more fed up with us needing more table space. One of our party was trying to ask/explain why we needed more space and I caught a local giving him the finger with bar tenders approval!! Stopped when I clocked them and then service improved somewhat.Shame because food was not bad, and we had lunch which enriched pub by over £100.The one thing you want from a country pub is a warm welcome and not surly locals and bar staff!!!

i stumbled upon this place en route to Horsham, and very glad I stopped.Looks like it's been recently done up and is bright and airy with a central log fire. Staff are friendly and it has the feel of a good local.Menu is heavy with pub stalwarts but the better for it. Stuffed mushroom with blue cheese was freshly cooked and homemade and there was a generous portion of good bangers and mash with a side portion of well cooked veg. Not expensive and all in all difficult to fault.

My wife and I run a small hotel/restaurant/bar nearby and after we have finished our own Sunday lunch service we like to get out and try someone else's; keep an eye on the competition and to wind down. Finding somewhere still open on a Sunday can be quite difficult and for the last 3 weeks we have had Sunday lunch (at about 7pm) here. The fact that we have been back at all tells you a story as we normally try to visit a different venue every week. Staff friendly and food good. Nice drop of beer at the bar. We shall have to miss a few weeks now as we must get back to our travels, but we will be back.

I only ever go to this pub when my friend is playing in the jazz band as I live in Brighton so my opinions are from visiting now and then so this is my opinion of the pub,I find the locals who use the pub on a regular basis are very friendly and make you feel relaxed. Bar staff when I visited have been very helpful and friendly and are keen to answer any questions about the drinks or food menu,However I find the food prices are quite expensive ie a bowl of chips are £3.and a cheese and tomatoe sandwich around £4.50 which I find expensive and will not be ordering any food at them sort of price's

We're very lucky, in that this is our local (but no, I'm not going to be too biased).Unfortunately, we don't frequent the Hare and Hounds as often as we'd like, but when we do, the staff are always very friendly and the food is always lovely. The menu isn't massive (which I always like from an establishment - as too much choice normally equates to bad food), but offers classic pub food done very well at a good price. The pork belly is amazing, you can't go wrong with ham egg and chips or the fish and chips - but if it's on the menu, the steak and kidney pudding is a winner every single time. Oh and if you're going to chat to anyone else other than the party you're with, don't have the garlic bread - It's fantastic, but very very strong!!The sunday roasts are always very good too.Bear in mind though, that this is a traditional and small village pub. It is not a poncy gastro pub, it doesn't have a lot of parking and It's not trying to be something it isn't. City dwellers may well be disappointed.

I used to use the Coach House up the road as a business meeting venue - until it unceremoniously closed, I transferred my rendezvous to the Hare and Hounds. My first experiences were great, better that than the previous hostelry - BUT, I have to say that the place has now lost its attraction for me. I found, on the last two occasions, the present front-of-house staff to be dour and unhelpful, and the prices seem to now be escalating, due, maybe, to the lack of local competition. The last visit had a log fire, for sure - but from the distinct chill inside the place, only just lit at 12 noon? Sadly, I shall now seek an alternative venue for my meetings.

Mainly because the landlady was so welcoming. A HAPPY PLACE! So sick of pretentious themed gastro pubs in our area. We often venture out to find a real 'Sussex' pub. Great for people with disabilities as they have ramps etc. We arrived early at 12.30am without prior booking and found a lovely roaring log fire and were kindly seated next to it. My partner chose the liver and bacon which was superb (loads of crispy bacon!) and I chose the Sunday beef roast. The Beef was lean and tasty, the yorkshire pud was homemade and sublime. The side dish of veg was cooked to perfection and the red cabbage in red wine... I could have eaten a mountain of! But WORD TO WISE.. If you turn up later than 1pm ...best BOOK! or do not come on here and WHINGE that you could not get a seat! Fabulous! I wish we lived nearer. Thank you XXX

What stikes you when you walk in is that the local regulars are so relaxed and at home that they must often be taking advantage of the hospitality. The food is good pub grub. The chef takes great pride in his food and is often to be seen in person checking that the diners are enjoying their food.Be warned that the Sunday roasts are populay so you may want to book a table.

We visited for the £5 pensioners lunch available only on thursdays and had chicken and leek pie which was notable for having no leek and was tasteless. The crumble for dessert was quite good. The pub needs to be modernised with more car parking. We will not return..

I would describe this is as good pub grub. The menu is quite old fashioned and it does not compare to some of the more forward thinking pubs and restaurants in the surrounding villages. That being said we all had a very nice traditional Sunday roast. Other main courses on the menu included fish & chips, scampi & chips, and sausage & mash. We did not get offered any specials and we did not spot a specials board. The pub is the last in the village of Cowfold just outside Horsham. I hope it survives, but a little more ambition with the menu is needed to attract more than local diners.Staff are very friendly and service was efficient. Prices are about right and the venue had enough diners to create a warm and family atmosphere.

This is a Pub/Restaurant. Good food and good service. The Sunday Roast is one of the best you will get in a pub with a good selection meat choices and all the trimmings. Served piping hot as well, which can sometimes be a problem with pub roasts. Family friendly. Good basic pub food menu with specials on a board.

Driven passed this pub at least 30 times on way to Gatwick over the years but never stopped. Visited on Thursday 26th September at 1:30pm. Reasonable sized car park with lots of spaces. Pub has oak beams which gives it a real traditional vibe. Didn’t book a table but was able to be seated straight away. Good choice on the menu. We had ciabatta baguettes (one halumi one sausage/onion) washed down with a Prosecco and a beer. Service good and baguettes only £9 each. View out the back of the pub over the South Downs is stunning! Worth knowing that last food orders are 2pm for lunch. Would definitely return.

Free entry to explore the marvellous gardens at Leonardslee when booking the Ultimate experience. A thorough wine tasting, brilliantly conducted by 'Simba', a true credit to his profession as a sommelier. Fabulous wines and that Sabre moment when the cork is 'popped', my friend did this with such distinction. An excellent, delicious Afternoon Tea followed, nothing waste much of a problem, photo opportunity, carrot cake a welcome extra but 'Simba' created the icing on the cake. Fantastic experience.

We've visited the Boars Head a few times recently and it has been consistently excellent. Today we both had the beef bourguignon, it was delicious. A generous portion of beautifully tender beef with mash made for a great meal, dessert was an impossibility on this occasion. The welcome and service has been impeccable on every visit as well The management are clearly working hard to achieve and maintain a high standard in every aspect of what they do. We ate mid-afternoon today (Saturday) without booking but I'd suggest that booking is essential for lunch and evening meals at the weekends. We have also had the Sunday lunch on a couple of occasions and that has been to the same standard.

Every time I order the quality is always consistent. Particularly recommend the cookie doughs. Why go to a sloppy chain when you can support a fantastic independent!
