The Happy Haddock in Isle of Wight

Congratulations on the smallest portion of chips on the Island, served in a bag so the vinegar drips out the bottom, so many better chippies on the Island. Won’t be back.

Food is great and cooked to order. Pre ordering means no wait but waiting for fresh, decent fish and chips is not a problem. Been back many times and will continue to use both Sandown and Shanklin shops.

Outstanding F&C, large portions, crispy tasty batter & fantastic fish. Very busy when we attended but well worth the 10 minute wait.

Helpful staff, great quality food and very reasonable. Would recommend.

The food was very disappointing.

Me, mum and my sister visited Sandown for the day and fancied some fish and chips. I goggle a few take away restaurants and this one seemed quite good! We ordered cod and chips and we must say that we loved it! The cod was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside! Yum! It definitely filled up our rumbling tummies! :) However, when we sat down and ate there, it felt quite awkward as being new on the island and did not realise that this restaurant gets very very busy. - There were only two tables and a few chairs and it felt uneasy with people watching you eat as they came in but that soon wore off as we got chatting and tucked into the delicious food! Seeing as we ate in and it was a restaurant, we were expecting the fish and chips to be served on the plate and have metal knife and forks on display at the counter but instead we ate from the paper bag with a wooden fork. It wasn't easy to eat to be honest. Happy to see that there were toilets in the restaurant and they were clean! Apart from all that, we will still come back in the future whenever we visit sandown again! But maybe next time we will bring our own metal knife, forks and plates! Haha!

Having eaten cod and chips all over the country I found the cod was very dry and not even fresh,the batter wasn't great at all very disappointing overall!!!!

We visited the sandown one last week whilst on holiday. I definitely would not recommend it. We walked in at 5.15pm and were told they weren’t taking any orders for 5 minutes whilst they caught up on the four orders they already had. We finally got served after waiting 10 minutes. When I ordered I asked for the gluten free options that they advertise on their website….they had to check first with the cook that they could do gluten free that evening as they only had one frier for it, not quite sure why they advertise as gluten free then if it’s not an every time occurrence for them? Thankfully they could do it however, we’d of been stuck if they couldn’t…I’d of also thought that was false advertising? Anyway, after waiting another 40 minutes for 5 meals we finally got served and were able to eat, once we fought our way to trying to find chairs to sit and eat (there’s an extremely big lack of chairs which is weird for an eat in or takeaway place). We were told the wait was due to us ordering gluten free, it was quite clear it was just because they were under prepared. People before us had to wait for their haddock because “it hadn’t been taken out of the freezer.” I would never go back to this place and we visit quite often. We ate at a restaurant a few times in the same week and received our meals each time a lot faster and nicer than here. The food once it arrived was ok, the pie my husband ordered was rock hard so I wouldn’t recommend that meal.

Pretty tasty food....love the logo...fish with arms ! brilliant stuff...haha. They forgot to salt and vinegar both of our salt and vinegars. 0/2 salt and vinegars...was a little disappointed but the chips were good though so that redeems it somewhat. Chipshop curry sauce has always been a mystery as to what the ingredients are....so what the hell is an IRISH curry sauce? My dad said it was basically normal curry sauce but with a KICK...I see how it is happy haddock...keep your curry secrets. Overall a bit of a wait but we were a family of 4 at 7 o'clock on a Friday so all things considered it wasn't outrageous 🐟🐟🐟🍟

Visiting an elderly friend, decided to go for some fish and chips , so glad we did , the fish was cooked beautifully, the establishment was clean and very welcoming, will definitely be returning.

Went on an August Friday night. Was quite busy, but staff worked through orders as quickly as possible as everything was being cooked to order so came up hot and fresh . If your vegetarian there is a menue pinned up at start of counter, includes bean fritter and mushy pea fritter which was delicious. All nine of my party enjoyed their dishes very much.

An ok fish and chips (4*) but very grumpy service (1*) near end of shift! Were also unwilling to honour Gluten Free offer which was a shame.

Visited Happy Haddock with my family and friends. I really liked you were able to pre-order and pick up at your preferred time. The meals were really nice and enjoyed by everyone including the children. The portions were ample. Would definently visit again.

We have visited Happy Haddock many times with family and friends, every time everything has been excellent. The meals were really tasty, great size portions, happy children and happy parents. Looking forward to our next one!

I popped in with family for lunch and I couldn’t recommend more. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable, tables and food areas are kept clean and food is cooked to order so is fresh and hot. All round fantastic food and service.

The food is lovely and you get loads for your money.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 My girlfriend and I had a fantastic takeaway meal at Happy Haddock Sandown last night! I ordered the cod and chips, while my girlfriend went for the cheeseburger and chips. The food was cooked fresh, and I have to say, it was probably the best piece of fish I've ever had! My girlfriend loved her cheeseburger too. It's refreshing to see a traditional fish and chip shop still going strong. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Happy Haddock to anyone looking for delicious, classic fare. Five stars all the way

Lovely fish and chips and a stones throw from the beach where you can walk and eat them.

Good sized portion, and much cheaper than my local chippy in Ryde... but, when I got back to the car, I realised that I was missing a portion of chips, so had to go back. Also, the chips were not really that hot.

Have to say I go on feed back... and was disappointed... fish was overcooked (fried looked like he simply did not want to be there) and the chips were runty. Not a great experience overall.

Sadly won’t be going back should be named unhappy haddock chips are black and don’t taste fresh considering the time you have to wait the buns are more like rock cakes only soft after adding the dried out chips but the warmth managed to soften the inside of the buns a definite no no

Great food, just don't dine in. They do NOT offer simple condiments, no ketchup or tarter sauce here. They will charge you for them though, individual packets 😂.

Normally get small chips every time and get perfect amount but the last time I ordered it was only 75% of what I normally get so I do not recommend and the curry sauce is horrible

After several visits I have come to the conclusion that if you are desperate for a portion of chips and this is the only chip shop in the area that is open treat yourself to a Chinese instead and save yourself massive disappointment from Happy Haddock’s terrible chips (over cooked in old tasting oil, and so dry you needs beer to help it down. Hopefully the alcohol will help you forget the experience)

Ordered 2 fish and chips at 17:51, the food was given to us at 18:18, very nearly 30 minutes. Certainly not fast food and whilst not bad, certainly not worth the wait. I have been served faster in a restaurant. Plastered all over the windows is 'under new management'. I think another change is necessary.

Literally one of the worst fish and chip shops I’ve been too Food is just bad! chips are burnt and have a funny taste the place itself smells like cheesy feet and looks dirty I wouldn’t even eat the fish. Staff look miserable the cook is literally throwing the food around with no real care. I would avoid this place notice says under new management so probably using the last persons reviews. Trust me avoid this place

I got a medium portion of chips and 2 saveloys, the chips were like "lunchtime warmups, with plenty of black ones, it was actually quite a small portion, thankfully in the end. Used to be a good place to go, but I guess there's no competition locally now

Maybe we got our chips on a bad day. But wow they were overly cooked and at £3 for a small bag of about 40 chips left us both with an aftertaste for the rest of the day. It baffles me how hard it is to find good chips nowadays from chip shops.

This is definitely the go-to place for fresh & crispy fish and chips! Chicken burger was also good!

Avoid all costs absolutely shocking waist of money time food absolutely disgusting food not enough not cooked properly taste cold like left overs mostly rotten chips , gravy like water, onion rings like old ones , kids meals are a joke barley any in bag , curry sauce like water , for the cost to some ppl this is there last treat or homeless in bnb we was looking forward to this not first chip shop gone down hill only newport seems to do proper chips won't be returning over priced

Nice chippy. Best to pre order as always a long wait for food as its cooked to order. They should stock more than 2pies tho. Soo frustrating when we all like the same pie but they never have more than 2 on offer!

We went to the Happy Haddock to get fish and chips for the whole family for our last night on the Isle of Wight. We were told the whole order would take 20 minutes, which was fine. Told we could put salt and vinegar on as it was wrapped up, since some of the kids didn't want it. When we were called over the whole lot had already been packaged, we had to pay £1.80 extra for vinegar to take away with us, and were assured it was all there. Drove back to our holiday accommodation, and one adults meal and one kids meal were missing. We tried calling, the phone rang and rang and then said 'no-one can answer your call and you cannot leave a message', then hung up on us. Due to the time taken to prepare the order, we were unable to drive back and complain/rectify the issue because they would have been closed when we got there. It is a shame because the food, for the people who got their meals, was nice. But sadly the service was not. Very very disappointed 😞

Although the food was great, however I was shocked to listen to the manager at the Sandown branch talk about gluten free, saying it was a fad and even told us that the shanklin branch don’t follow gluten free safety as they don’t change the oil. He had a pure lack of respect for people who are gluten free saying that we were mostly making it up. Shocking behaviour from a manager. People who require gluten free have serious health issues, some are anaphylactic and others have reactions are intolerant to it. To hear a manger speak in the way he did was discussing, disrespectful and unsafe.

Alright fish and chips, cod had the skin on, plenty of seating. Not cheap anymore

Really nice fish and chips. The only I thing I would advise is place your order before hand at peak times. I waited half an hour and was queueing outside the shop. There were plenty more in the queue after me as well. Once I did get served they were really quick getting my order ready and it was accurate. Highly recommended

We are on holiday and visited the Sandown store yesterday lunchtime. We ordered a mixture of items including 2 x gluten free cod and chips. We were delighted with the food, service and care taken with the gluten free items. Firstly the food tasted delicious. It was all cooked to order and was piping hot. The gluten free batter was crisp and the fish fresh. The chips were chunky and had a great colour. We had regular size portions which was more that enough for us. The staff were friendly and attentive and service was prompt. With 7 hungry mouths to feed, we appreciated this. In terms of the gluten free menu. We were impressed. It is available every day and is cooked in a dedicated separate fryer. We were impressed that they could offer a large range of items in the gluten free menu. Finally, the staff packages the gluten free items separately, carefully labelling the bags to avoid any mix ups. All in all, we would definitely recommend The Happy Haddock at Sandown. It’s close to the beach and tastes great. Many thanks.

Chip portions were a bit smaller than i was expecting but food was tasty

Very good chips value for money

Went in 10 minutes before closing and says freshly cooked to order but chips were old and so was the fish. Cod had ok flavour but had dried out and wasn't fresh. Will try again at a different time.

Ideal as a take away, food great, but eat in is a bit basic. Close to a nice beach.

Wish I could leave a minus. Ordered a 4oz burger, and my husband ordered cod and chips. What I waited for for 35 minutes wasn't a burger, it was a burger butty! No onion or lettuce or tomato. Even though I saw a few orders before we were served had them. My husbands fish was so greasy you could have fried a few more fish with, and the chips were brown, looked liked they were scraped from the bottom of the skip. Surly service!!! At least the seagulls enjoyed it.

Had thirty hungry school kids on a residential trip. They knocked up chips for all at short notice which gave us some leave and quiet on the seafront for half an hour. All happy, thanks.

Staff are not friendly. Specially the chap doing the cooking. Telephone orders are a joke. They just don’t answer the phone. Online orders are pointless as they never keep to their time. Fish is good.

A fantastic experience. Great food and great service. I had Cod Chips and Irish Curry sauce and the portion size was fantastic, even for a large chap like myself. My wife had GLUTEN FREE chips, pineapple fritters and baked beans and loved every mouthful. Highly recommended 👌

Good fish and chips, good menu for coeliacs with a range of gluten free options. One of the best fish and chips I've had for a while,batter nice and crispy which makes a change from many other places.

Sorry to say but better not as good as usual . Sandown Happy Haddock just a little below the shanklin shop for service, cleanliness, and the batter on fish.

Our first time in this new branch of the Happy Haddock so we were a little worried that the very high standards of the Shanklin branch would be hard to match. We're pleased to report that those standards have been replicated in the Sandown branch. We enjoyed an excellent lunch freshly cooked to order by friendly, helpful, knowledgeable staff. We're so happy that we now have two favourite Fish & Chip shops on the Isle of Wight. Highly recommended.

Really great value fish and chip shop in Sandown. Staff are friendly and efficient and portion sizes are quite good. Make sure you ask for salt and vinegar though as they don't ask you! Softdrinks also good value.
