I've visited The Steamer many times over the years, owned as it is by the same family as other great IOW pubs The Spyglass, The Dairyman's Daughter and The Bargean's Rest. (All also recommended.) This time we stopped in for a family meal, gathering seven of us around a spacious table with a view over the beach. Ordering at the bar was simple and there was plenty on the menu, including lots of gluten free options for my wife. The food came quickly and was excellent. The pub itself has a well decorated nautical theme and is very well presented. It's somewhere that's always worth a visit - although parking can be a challenge at busy times, when you may also have to wait to be seated.

Really impressed with the food here. I had the nachos with chilli and it was delicious and a generous helping. Burgers were a popular choice among our party and all spoke very positively. Also good for kids as they have colouring for them. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Great meal.

We only popped in for a drink and something to eat so did not see the rooms. The service was friendly and efficient, didn't wait very long for our food, very generous portions, we didn't manage to eat it all, but the lasagne , which i had, was delicious, my friend had the fish pie which she said was fabulous, and my vegetarian friend had the halloumi cheese light bite option, which again was very nice, but had far too much onion. It was all very well presented.

Had dinner their and it was good portions, however I ordered large fish and chips when it came I got his little brother,asked waitress if this was the large cod she said yes,at the chippy further along Shanklin front my fish would have struggled to compete with their children's portion,disappointed with my dinner wife and daughters were fine,if you want a decent sized fish and chips I would try another restaurant

This restaurant is absolutely amazing, food is really good quality, excellent portions, it has every drink you could want and beautiful views of the sea. Ate there tonight and the wait staff were incredible. the girl seating customers was so polite and lovely. didn't manage to get her name but she was so organised and kind to everyone she spoke to, very impressed with her customer service. Her and the others who served us were very polite and made our restaurant experience one of the best we have had. would definitely recommend and would love to visit again !!!! 😊

For a cheap , filling lunch or dinner with fantastic beachfront views this is probably the place to come to. Add in friendly service and a good selection of drinks. Then you have an ideal venue.

We visited The Steamer Inn situated on the Esplanade in Shanklin while holidaying on the Isle of Wight. You don't need to book, but you may have to wait a little at busier times. It's has lots of sea related memorabilia on the walls and celling throughout the building with a very inviting feel to it. You get the choice of eating in or out on the sea view veranda. They have a good choice of starters, mains, desserts and drinks. We had for starters Loaded Potato Wedges, Salt & Pepper Squid & Crispy Deep Fried Whitebait. For mains was Battered Cod with Chips and a bowl of Mussels and for desert was Banoffee Boat. Even though it was a Saturday evening and very busy, the service and food was exceptional. It's well worth a visit if your ever on the Isle of Wight.

This was recommended by a friend who lives on the island, very nice place and extremely popular with queues although was seated within 5 minutes. The food was good and plentiful

Had a amazing meal here this weekend. I have quite a lot of allergies including gluten and onion and struggle to eat anywhere. I asked at the bar when ordering and they went to make sure I what I could have and to check ingredients. Then they ensured my allergies where noted. I had a brilliant meal and I felt safe eating.

Went for two meals while there for the scooter rally top class food and drinks and very friendly staff shame the bar wasn't open a bit later would highly recommend 👍

Food was expensive, but expected that as the location by beach ,the food was ok ,bar staff need to smile 😃 a bit more as a bit grumpy 😠

Beautiful setting. Only issue we had staying there for three nights was first morning we didn’t have any hot water, however they actually promptly and got their engineer in and had it sorted by the afternoon, they kept us up to date about this as well which was great customer service. Room needs a little updating but was still suitable and the mattress was lovely! Definitely be staying here again. Their portion sizes on the food were great as well! Fresh ingredients delivered every morning.

Lovely pub on the seafront, meals were tasty and full some ,staff friendly and helpful.

Love cafe / restaurant with seafront views. Great Italian coffee and not to miss decor . A calming location for food and drinks . Parking outside is possible if you’re early enough. Or parking at the top of the cliff and a quick ride in the famous nearby lift .recommend to all

We enjoyed a lovely meal at The Steamer this week. The staff were friendly and the service was very good. The menu is varied and well priced, and our meals were delicious.

I just called asking if they take reservations for bookings (tables to eat in) received a very rude reply “I wouldn’t know” we don’t take bookings, you just turn up and if you get a table, you get a table. Really not the politest way to answer a potential customer

Popped in as was having a day on the beach having ventured to the IOW and looked right up my street as a lover of fresh fish. An authentic looking fish restaurant with a menu that offered enough non-fishy numbers to cater to all, this looked to be ticking all the boxes as a beautiful place overlooking the beach to eat. I ordered the seafood platter and it didn't disappoint. Calamari, smoked salmon, fresh prawns and smoked Mackerel... accompanied by a generous 2 (fresh and crunchy) baguettes and even a decent side salad!!.... I couldn't fault any of it. Fresh, a good portion and presented with care this was a genuine delight. The kids macaroni cheese was obviously home cooked, delicious (I tried it) h and clearly cooked with multiple cheeses and supplied in a good portion.... again couldnt fault it!!! To round it off my wife had a Nicoise salad with Mackerel and the portion was again huge, fresh and tasty!!! I genuinely couldn't find fault with any of it and looking at other people's orders going by it all looked amazing!!! Final mention must go to the waiting staff whom were friendly, and greeted you with a smile and served everything politely with care!!! This place genuinely knows how to cook and serve the food you want to eat and I'd eat here again in a heartbeat!!!

We visited last year and again this year and the food, drinks, service and views are brilliant. Staff was very quick to serve and all round we love coming to the Steamer Inn.

Great location on the sea front,went here on an evening and during the day food was great service very fast and friendly and the decor of the steamer inn was really nice will be returning next year when on the island again

Lovely seafront view, just a shame the service was awful. Was spoken down to by the server just because they got the order wrong and I was brought the wrong food and I queried it. The food was also very mediocre. Very bad vibes

Food quality and portion size excellent as ever.

We ate at The Steamer for most nights of our week long stay in IOW and every meal was of very good quality, and I certainly worked my way round the menu! I can highly recommend the gammon.There is also a very good and varied selection of ales and lagers(I worked my way round these too). What really sealed the deal for us is that it is totally dog friendly, inside and out, but you can't beat sitting outside with a cold pint of Shipyard watching the blue sea and all that goes with it. Don't visit the IOW without visiting The Steamer.

Lovely venue with great views. Took the dog and they catered well for her. Doggy friendly. We just had a snack. Hubby said his cheesy chips were the best ever and I enjoyed cheesy garlic rustic baguette while doggo had a pork and leek sausage. All washed down with a bottle of rose perfectly chilled. Beautiful seafront mariners pub restaurant and guest rooms. The food is fab and offers Gluten free options. The staff work flat out as it gets extremely busy and its first come first serve for a table. No reservations accepted unless you are staying there. Fully recommend.

My husband, son and daughter in law stayed for a long weekend and we all very much enjoyed ourselves. The breakfasts were delicious. We had two evening meals and both were well presented. We found the staff very attentive and as we were staying there they were able to reserve a table for us which was handy as very busy. The rooms were clean and comfortable with an amazing shower. Both rooms had balconies which looked over the promenade and the sea so could watch the boats. Will definitely be back. Thank you Steamer.

We were in Shanklin and decided to go for a spot of lunch at The Steamer - attractive location on the sea front. You can either order by the App or at the bar. We found that we were unable to connect to the App, so ordered the old fashioned way with Mrs Moose going to the bar. Our drinks were pretty standard, a pint of Somersby for me and a coke for Mrs Moose. The food arrived shortly after. Mrs Moose went for the chilli, while I went for the gammon steak. The chilli was tasty and enjoyed by Mrs Moose - her only comment was that the mince was ground more than expected. My gammon was fine - nothing special, but hit the spot and the portion was well sized. We did return here later in the day, sitting out in the sunshine overlooking the seafront - very relaxing.

We visited after looking on line. Our dog archie was made most welcome. Service was quick and attentive . Food very good. Trout was absolutely lovely. Huge choice large portions! Desserts sound great but we had no room ! We are on the island for a week We will be back..

Very nice sea Front pub offering great food and good selection of Ales, Lagers and Scrumpy Cider. The menu here is good and varied and very competively priced, very generous portions and served nice and hot. Very nicely decorated and kept tidy and clean even during busy periods, great sea facing frontage, some in the open and some covered. Good inside seating for those wetter days, very friendly staff.

A really lovely find on the esplanade. You could order from either the bar or the app which is a nice option and the food came in quick time. Didn’t come at a peak time so we were able to pick our own seats. Good choice of vege options alongside some pub classics. Very good!

Stopped off here for breakfast straight after leaving IoW festival. The breakfast was quality. One of the best sausages I had for a long time. Good coffee and friendly staff!

Recently had holiday to Isle of Wight and visited the pub for food and drink with the family great value and taste even better the homemade chocolate fudge cake was banging.

Came in for a quiet birthday meal. The team on duty were friendly and helpful. The food was amazing and cooked to perfection. We will be back. Thank you for a great evening.

A really great find! We were looking for something quick but substantial to eat before a last chance visit to The Chine. This was exactly what we needed and even offered a vegan section on the menu! We enjoyed traditional fish and chips for my boyfriend, and the Louisiana burger for me - both were very delicious and enjoyed with views of the sea!

Visited this pub yesterday initially just for a drink. The pub is in a good location with lovely views. Inside, the pub is pleasant and staff were friendly (having read other comments about staff attitude, but couldn't fault them on our visit). The menu looked nice if a little bit pricier than would usually pay, but decided to eat and very pleased we did. The cod and chips (large serving with peas and salad) was excellent and the chilli-con-carne got the thumbs up. Nice pub, would definitely visit again.

Had lunch which was okay, alitte dirty, kept getting flies near our food which for me personally is a know, lovely staff.

Visited this place today, great view of the sea and food was lovely but every single member of staff rude, un welcoming, could not crack a smile. I would love to visit again but I wouldn’t due to the staff. It felt like they were doing us a favour being there

Went here with my family. Ordered 5 breakfasts and drinks, on previous occasions toast has been included, however on this occasion it wasn't. I appreciate the toast wasn't mentioned on the menu but assumed that it was included as we have had it before. The assistant did not try to upsell toast when we ordered, which would have alerted us that toast is now an extra.

EXTREMELY RUDE STAFF! We have been loyal customers for the past 30 years, always looking forward to a trip to the Steamer Inn on our visit to the island, however unfortunately we will not be visiting again. My Father went to the bar to order two more drinks whilst eating outside. He was rudely informed by a young, unprofessional member of staff stating "you have to join the queue" and nothing else. Over the past 30 years of coming to the Steamer Inn, there has always been one queue for food and the bar area to order drinks. I also do not know of any other pub whereby you can’t go up to the bar to order a drink. He instead decided to come back a little bit later when his first drink was finished and on this occasion there was no queue at all. He was met by another member of staff and asked her a simple question as to why a customer can’t just go up to the bar to order a drink, especially when in the summer months the queue would be much longer. She went on to (in a very monotone expression) that “it has been like this since COVID” and again with no professionalism or politeness. As he then moved to the bar area waiting for his drink and was served by the first member of staff on the earlier occurrence, he tried to engage in conversation just to understand why the service has changed to a system that doesn’t exactly work, the second member of staff rudely interrupted stating “If you don’t like it, you can go next door”. Taken aback by her rudeness, lack of professionalism and attitude, this caused much frustration to my Father, as it would to anyone. I am extremely disappointed that this once lovely establishment now has a team who clearly indicate that they do not wish to be there. I even attended the Steamer Inn myself on bank holiday Monday and felt that the atmosphere and overall vibe from the member of staff was bland and inhospitable. I have also read many reviews stating the same thing. After so many years of lovely memories, I can promise that we will never come to the Steamer Inn again and, will in fact, “go next door”. I highly advise that in preparation for the summer months, you may want to re-think your staffing standards.

They have not mentioned anywhere the time for last order. Though we were seated in restaurant for almost an hour with drinks n starters, they refused to take our mains order at 20:40 as we were 10 mins late. They were absolutely unapologetic and rude about it. Manager was very rude. We had to go without food for the night. Maybe they should mention on their menu card or on the display board outside the time for their last order so that people don't have to go to bed hungry. Very disappointed 😞

Wonderful time here again! This time Great, Great Aunt Iris went for the Free Range Egg sandwich with crisps and salad and I had the Prawn in Creole mayo baguette with chips and salad and a lovely glass of sauv blanc! Staff as attentive as ever, sun shining and opposite the lovely Sandy Sandown beach. Plenty of parking and a slope up the side for the elderly, pushchairs and wheelchair users. Toilets are on the slope entrance inside with no steps. Love this place!!!!!

The location of the steamer and is what makes this place absolutely stunning without side seating just opposite the beach. I didn't personally go to the bar but my friend fed back to me and said the staff were more interested in talking between themselves and serving. The ale had gone off I've had that many times and it has never tasted like that I ended up leaving it. We both had the fish and chips and that was nice however a little pricey but I guess you're paying for the location we waited about 10 minutes for the food to come out which was as expected they weren't even but they weren't dead.

Lovely place, fantastic Staff and gorgeous food. I had scampi and it was superb. Wife had mussels and really enjoyed them. We sat outside on the terrace. Beautiful views. Staff very attentive. Very enjoyable.

Brilliant food, my daughter was delighted to find gluten-free on the menu, helpful and friendly staff, nothing was too much trouble. The food was hot and fresh, and very reasonably priced. There are lovely views out across the sea, and the beach is just across the road. Would definitely come here to eat again.

Relaxing place for a drink and meal.

We spotted this place as we were walking along the beach on a rainy Sunday. It was busy but they were able to give us a table for 5 and the dog inside. Staff were friendly and food was great. Lots of people were eating the Sunday roasts, which looked delicious but we couldn’t resist some of the specials like mussels and frites. The seafood chowder was also delicious and such a generous portion. Would visit again if in the area. Lots of veggie options and had gluten free available too.

Visiting IOW this week and went to the Steamer for dinner this evening after recommendation. The food was absolutely delicious, I'm coeliac and they cater well for GF. The service was very quick and the prices were very reasonable. Definitely one to visit. Also a lovely location on the seafront.

Didn't stay over but the food in the restaurant was really good and reasonably priced. Dog friendly too.

Bland and disappointing. Fish had no flavour. Staff looked bored to tears. Ambience was poor. Very overpriced. Prices clearly based on the seaview rather than the food itself.

Clearly the smartest restaurant in this area, very good food, friendly and welcoming service. I'd definitely come back.

Great food especially Sunday lunch

I first visited this restaurant in 2004 with friends, took my husband back two years later & have been back many times since. This time though, it was disappointing. My meal (curry) was average & the staff were very unfriendly.
