The Hand and Racquet in Merton

It was busy and all the things you'd have expected from a night out in Wimbledon. However the kind nature of those behind the bar was excellent. Definitely a pub I will return to.

£7 for a lager and where ever you sit you can smell the toilet ,out priced me so never again. Staff were ok Was going to eat but the toilet smell dreadful.

I live local in a large housing complex and The Hand & Racket is my local which me and friends use regularly. We all agree that we really enjoy the welcom and efficiency of the great polite staff who will do their best to give you the service anybody would wish for . Mick is the manager there, and he is a good boss and the staff (To many to mention by name) work as a great team. The food is excellent and theres always something on the menu that will take your fancy. In addition to this , the promotion spells when they do like 2 for 1 are absolutely a winner and Green King change them periodically, Its a must. Then if you go on the live music nights the atmosphere is great fun. So , if you and friends are looking for a pub in Wimbledon , give it a try you will see what I mean . I would also like to take this oppertunity to THANK ALL the staff for always working hard and not only for their excellent service but friendship Ive got with the team ,, Well done you guys .. No doubt I will see you soon .. Came to Wimbledon a few months ago for the first time in many years and stopped here for a rest & a wine before heading home. The pub was clean and welcoming and the staff very friendly and quick to serve. The wine we ordered was reasonably priced and was of good quality. Whilst we didn’t order anything to eat, looking at the menu, there is a good choice and again the prices seem reasonable. There happened to be a gentleman in there who was very intoxicated, barely functioning and was clearly in need of help. Whom I assume to be a manager came and I was so impressed at how he dealt with the situation. He treated the man with kindness, concern, respect and patience. He managed to contact a person from the mans phone and ensured he was ok and helped him to be on his way safely. I wouldn’t hesitate to pop in again if I was in the area

Returned to the Hand after 15 years. Wow I will be back. Friendly staff, lovely pub. Nicole behind the bar was so lovely and helpful. Nothing was too much. She went above and beyond to welcome us. Service like this is very rare today. Worth a visit and say hi to the staff. Thank you

Look. I ain't an online person normally (hate face creep, stalk book etc.) That being said i'm one of several regulars in Wimbledon that pops into Hand and Racqet. The pub itself needs no face lift, however, Nick, Lee and the staff have always made it a lovely spot. Led by Nick, and Lee, very courteous and respectful staff... Very engaging and welcoming pub and I would thoroughly welcome anyone to pop in for a tipple :) There is also a weekly darts tournament on a Monday, organised by Lee. Only £3 entry. No hassle, nor pressure. Great fun and good prize to the winner. Another top notch reason to visit. In summary, great fun, great people, and most importantly , great pub.

Amazing. We went out for dinner, heard music from the Hand and Racquet and decided to look at their menu. We could see that it had such a good atmosphere we wanted to go in and didn't really care about the menu in the night. It was brilliant. The singer was an entertainer as well, I'd definitely recommend going when Matt Sutton is listing. The bar staff were friendly and smiley so welcoming. The food was great - we had burgers. A wonderful experience thank you all.

Lovely pub with not bad prices. Always visit here when staying in Wimbledon, always a great atmosphere with friendly efficient staff. Can't wait for our next vist.

Visited early New Year’s Day whilst staff were removing festive decorations/no problems at all with midday staff. A few hours later a couple of new staff took issues with me and guests over the fact they couldn’t serve cocktails even though all menus stated they could. Instead of removing menus they were rude and very cold and rude to me and guests about not being able to serve cocktails because they were not trained. I asked how is this possible if they had all the menus still displayed on all the tables and a full rack of spirits and mixers on full display behind the bar. Instead of apologising they were very rude and hostile like I and my group were not paying guests and we were a problem to them and their shift. Disgusting attitude to guests and an absolute embarrassment to a venue we have visited for more than a decade. Hope the senior management dismiss the the staff and address the issue as we have always enjoyed visiting this venue , but felt absolutely disgusted with the attitude and treatment on this visit from the staff on duty !!!! Will not be visiting again with the same staff on duty period -absolutely nil customer service acumen.

Came here on a Tuesday evening hoping for a decent beer after I had visited Wimbledon and was let down by 2 other pubs close by. One had an after work staff member shouting the odds and talking like she was a gangster and the second pub was showing the football but was not so bad. Left there and ended up in this pub, had a friendly greeting from James behind the bar and marta who was also a staff member. Plenty of choice of beers, ended up with the clwb tropica which is my favourite beer. At £6.10 it may sound expensive but it was good value for a craft beer considering I had paid £6 for a pint at each of the previous pubs and they were general standard beers. I have paid a lot more in central London. Beer Is kept very good, fresh taste, no complaints. Food menu looks great, will definitely come back and try some food. The music is a good selection and not so loud you can't hear your mate when chatting on a night out. My gf is disabled and they have a disabled toilet and also the entry to the pub is flat, ground level with no steps. Inside the disabled toilet is everything you would need at wheelchair height and also a sanitary bin which a lot of places do not have. Looking forward to coming back here soon. Terrible management - avoid. Beers were completely flat. When I went to get it replaced, the manager tried to tell me there was nothing wrong with it. Then I ordered food but they forgot to mention the kitchen was closed (couldn't get the food). When asking for a refund, they did not know how to do it and I had to wait 15 minutes at the bar whilst they figured it out. At the end, they couldn't figure it out and gave me cash. Should have given me the rest of the drinks as an apology gesture. Will not be returning.

Fantastic pub in a busy area but with a welcoming locals feel. Great selection of drinks, well kept beers and good food. Most notably the service is superb - the staff are very friendly and extremely quick and efficient, always look forward to popping in with friends or for a quick drink after work

So I booked a table about an hour and a half before attending just to make sure that we would have a table, as I was with my family and young daughter. We turned up and a disinterested member of staff told us that he wouldn’t have had the booking as it was made not long ago… even though it’s online? Anyway we are told that we could grab a table if we could find one. (Gee thanks)That immediately made us feel unwelcome and annoyed as we had had a booking accepted online. Anyway we got a table, and ordered our meal from the menu. To be told that a lot of what we wanted wasn’t available. We persevered and actually had a very tasty dinner. The pie was delicious, and so was the chicken burger. The pub itself had a cosy ambience, but it was just such a shame that we had the initial disinterested brush off. And that so much of what we ordered wasn’t available. Maybe it was a off day, but we left feeling a bit disappointed.

Wonderful catch up with friends to celebrate Christmas. Really great pub, staff were fantastic, lovely personal service and food was superb.

There was a lovely war and friendly atmosphere. All the staff where friendly and dealt with our request and needs quickly and Efficiently. The food was divine and wait times were not bad at all, we were a bit weary with it being a green king. But they went above and beyond and we would go as far to say it is one of the best overall pubs in Wimbledon.

Service was quick and friendly. Atmosphere was good. Very impressed with how the staff made the effort with an elderly gentleman who was on his own.

As soon as you walk in you are stunned by how beautiful it looks with all the Christmas decorations! The food and drinks are very reasonably priced considering you are in Wimbledon. It still has a very pub feel without feeling outdated. Would be a great meeting place for any occasion. The pub is cosy and the staff all provide exceptional and friendly customer service always. The place is run by an organised manager, Marta who ensures your beverage needs are met in a timely manner and with a smile. In addition the place, staff and clientele are down to earth and the atmosphere is friendly.Marta runs a tight ship (efficient and serve with a smile.Food is excellent and arrives with no delays and specific needs are good. Brunch is very good value though interestingly few people take it up.

Ordered and did not realise it was Nachos for sharing. After a bite my son left his chips and I had to fight him off my nachos. Freshly cooked, crispy and melt in the mouth. Otherwise the rest of family enjoyed the menu.

Nice place to drink or eat. I used to not like this place but I got swayed by the food. White bait, bbq platter was the way to my heart. Personable non robotic staff hell aswell. A bit pricey which stops me visiting as much as I would want but still good.

Visited Friday evening and the bar was lively, good atmosphere, and the staff welcoming and efficient. The food wasn’t bad but just poor value. Over 6 of us ate there and all agreed that the burgers in particular were overpriced for for what was average standard food. The accompaniments were what looked and tasted like oven fries, and that was it for £12. Won’t eat there again. And the IPA was flat!

Catch up and late lunch with a friend. Great place, close to the station. Able to order some food quite late in the afternoon. General pub style food menu, nice selection. Reasonable prices too. Great drink specials.

Experienced the Hand & Racquet as part of a large group on a pub crawl thru Wimbledon, culminating in an Indian at the end of the evening. Others sampled included, Crooked Billet, Dog & Fox, Hand in hand, Rose & Crown and Prince of Wales. Overall not a bad experience. No complaints and the staff were polite.

One of the better GK pubs I've been to in recent times. Great atmosphere and the bar snack (beer food) selection is as good as anywhere you'll find - those Spicy halloumi bites in particular!

The atmosphere of the place was good, service timely, food was better than equivalent places we have been to, and whilst costing more than you might expect to pay, was overall worth it, as there were no disappointments

The food might be slightly pricey for what it is but this is a really pleasant pub, and unsurprisingly popular given it's relaxed atmosphere and comfortable set up.

Been here a few times over the years came here on Saturday busy pub London prices, got served quickly and managed to find a few seats overall it was nice, music through speakers.

I went for a lunch on Saturday and we had the prime steak burger, which comes with chips. It was absolutely delicious and I would thoroughly recommend it.

We come here for lunch when we have a special work occasion and the food has always been excellent and good value. I particularly like the scotch eggs with a side of chips.

My husband and I were just passing this place today in Wimbledon (opposite Elys) and popped in for a couple of cocktails. Imagine our delight when we found out it was happy hour between 4pm and 6pm. Two cocktails for £6.95 and very nice they were too. We had to sample several to make sure they were all equally as tasty. Very friendly and professional bar staff. We will definitely be coming back here.

This pub is such a nice place to be, especially on the last Thursday of the month when they have live music. The food is very nice too, I would recommend the Mac & cheese with pulled pork.

Ever since it opened, I've loved the vibe of this place.Chilled. For a real ale bar that are normally sleepy and full of old men (me) - this is a happening place. The staff usually know their products, lots of rare ales on sale and there are lots of places to sit (or you can be a bar fly like me).Straight out the station, turn right. This is a must for your first watering hole in Wimbledon.

Went here Sunday lunchtime with the family. It is a lovely place with a homely atmosphere. The staff were gerat and the food tasty, with a good selection. Would highly recommend.

We have visited twice now for the Sunday carvery, and highly recommend it. The meat is well cooked and good quality. The veg is fresh with great roast potatoes. Friendly staff and great beer!

I have lunch here every few weeks. The food is generally good, sometimes very good. Staff are friendly and helpful, and the overall atmosphere is pleasant. Unfortunately just as I get used to a new menu, it's changed ... still, there are a number of standard pubby items (e.g. sausage and mash, steak) that seem constant. Music can be a bit intrusive, but staff usually respond to a request to turn it down. Worth looking in if you're in Wimbledon.

We went in here again, as we liked it last time. The staff are lovely, the chips are devine and the drinks reasonably priced - even the cocktails. The atmosphere is very nice, not a pub, not a restaurant, sort of in between. My only complaint was the awful background music they played, nothing recognisable and just a bit too loud so it makes having a conversation in a busy bar very difficult. However we will return sometime.

Went there Chtistmas Eve and the atmosphere and food was okay. My wife had Scampi and chips and I had fish and chips and I have had better food.

A group of us tried the hand and racquet for a Sunday roast! We went later in the day so they ran out of pork portions unfortunately. The general meal was ok, I wouldn't say the best I've had. The Yorkshire pudding was completely flat! Also the beef was very fatty. As I said it was ok but I probably wouldn't come back for a roast. Even more so I had to go find a waiter of waiting to get our own menus and ask what the Sunday roast specials were

Whenever people come over on a Sunday for a roast, this is where I take them! They also have a great bar and awesome bar staff. Had a really good rum recommendation from one of the guys behind the bar. The bonus is it's just across the road from the Department store so it's the perfect place for post shopping refuelling!

4 of us went in for a drink and something to eat at about 8.55 pm after seeing a film. We had passed two other bars that were full but this bar was about half full with several free tablesWe sat at a table looked at the menus while one of us bought a bottle of wine at the bar. Having poured our 4 glasses one of the staff came up and said if we were hoping for food the kitchen had now closed. It was not yet 9pm. We said the reason we had come in to eat but she was apologetic but repeated the kitchen was closed. So we had to quickly down the rather expensive bottle of wine we had bought and go elsewhere. Very disappointing

Plenty of cosy corners to chat to friends, while enjoying a drink and some food. Clean and welcoming.

Good location and spacious and a good place to have a drink.The service is often a little slow, but good wine and beer prices and often specials to ease the strain on the pocket.On the few occasions I've eaten there, the food lacks imagination with lots of deep fried stuff that is very oily. The menu could benefit from some fresh, innovative salads and maybe a good pate!

This lovely place is great for a couple of afternoon cool ones to wind down especially between 4 - 7 as they run a happy hour. The pub is tastefully decorated and very welcoming. Beers on tap are well kept with friendly staff it truly is an excellent place to visit. Now they do have a menu but I'm sorry I didn't try it out!

My friend and I stopped here on the walk up to Wimbledon for a quick refreshment. We really liked the vibe and atmosphere, staff were friendly and helpful, we commented that we could do with somewhere like this back home! Drinks were generally typical of London prices and did the job.

We were looking for a pub, but found this friendly bar. Its a little different, not a cafe, not a bar, not a pub, but verging on a restaurant. We found the staff very friendly, and it was happy hour so good deals. We snacked on some french fries. All in all, a lovely venue, great prices and we WILL come here again.

Came with some work colleagues on a Friday night - reserved a table in advance. Good atmosphere, clean surroundings, bogof cocktails and the best bit - the food. Wanted a fish finger sandwich but that finished at 5pm, the barman suggested an alternative of sharing fish platter, as I don't like whitebait they substituted extra scampi and we also had the coleslaw - all delicious and plenty for two. Will return

This is generally a relaxed pub with decent beers near Wimbledon town centre. It's smaller thank similar nearby places and tends to be a bit quieter - which is a bonus. The staff are nice and friendly, but the deputy manageress was so unpleasant to us - for no reason whatsoever - that we have resolved not to use this place to meet in future. When we mentioned it to the barman on duty, he sighed and told us that many people had complained about her disagreeable attitude to normal, decent customers. Shame, but there you go

Popped in looking for a quick lunch near the train station and we were pleasantly surprised. The decor is crisp and a skylight warms up the space. Bar staff and servers were friendly, got a smile with our greetings. Good selection of draft beers and reasonably priced wines by the glass, especially for London. Had the chicken-fried chicken and it was crisp, nicely seasoned and not at all greasy. The accompanying coleslaw was delicious with just the right balance of creaminess and acidity. The rosemary salted fries were oustanding!

I have been to the Hand and Racquet quite a few times and have always enjoyed it. The décor is inviting and homely. The pleasant, relaxed atmosphere is complimented by the helpful and friendly staff. There is a good selection of beers, spirits, cocktails and wine as well as teas and coffees, while the menu offers a variety of dishes and specials.

I suggested this pub as a meeting place as it was almost next to the station and I was pleased I did. As has been said by others, it has obviously had a recent facelift and looks very smart and modern inside but still with the feel of a "pub with food" rather than a "restaurant with beer". One guide had mentioned a large number of TV screens around the single room but they were cunningly disguised as pictures and adverts until required for sports events! We ordered beers and coffees and sat at a high table by the window in this old Boots shops (which has also been a Hogshead pub before now) and planned our afternoon. The rugby would be shown later but as we were moving on it would not affect us but it looked as though the place would get very busy then (many tables being reserved). Large coffees were fine and not too expensive (there are so many coffee shops around these days that pubs have to compete at a fair price). It's a Greene King pub with a couple of their beers on draught and two guest ales from the local Wimbledon Brewery - so not bad overall (our beers were fine - taste and temperature-wise). We would use this pub again for drinks but I can't comment on the food side of things. Very handy for trains; taxis and buses and the shops.

This pub has had a total make over since I last visited. It's attempting to be a bit more of a cafe pub than the drinking pub it wa. AtAtAtmosphere and decor makes it more if a couples and female friendly place. Food is ok but a bit standard ding cooking. Prices not cheap but not the worst.

Had once been a regular as worked nearby. Not been here for 2 years since last refurbishment Found that refurbished again actually better, more homely. However the wine prices have gone up dramatically. A large glass of house red costs a whopping £6.75. It seems they have now joined the ranks of the nearby Alex and the extremely deafening All Bar One. A pity as it had once been good value for money. I can't answer for the food. Cheapest place in Wimbledon for a glass of wine now appears to be the massive Wetherspoons.

Poor hospitality and unfriendly staff. Kicked off our table by the bar man as "someone called to reserve this particular table". We'd been happily sat there eating and drinking for nearly two hours and would have carried on. There was no sign on the table when we arrived. We were told we could move elsewhere in the pub, no thanks, there are plenty other decent, and I have to say friendlier, pubs in Wimbledon.

The atmosphere in this pub is always great, not hugely crowded and the staff are SO NICE! I run a social club in the area and we always do our Wimbledon Socials there! I've adopted them as our favourite venue in Wimbledon!

We called here for lunch and I had the £9.50 meal deal which includes a main course, choice of side and drink, which includes house wine or choice of beer. I had the pulled Pork wrap with triple cooked chips and my daughter had the Chicken and Mushroom Pie which she really enjoyed. The staff were pleasant and friendly and we really enjoyed it. Also, it is very convenient to Wimbledon station.
