We stopped in for a meal in the way to the Dieppe ferry. Sadly they are “just a drinking pub” we were told but the lady behind the bar was very happy to direct us to a pub serving food. Very helpful to get us to a pub which did serve food.

Popped in after a swim at Seaford. Met with friendly people, and 6 gorgeous calm friendly dogs. Had a great quality pint of Harvey's and relaxed for a short while. The pub looks very clean, has a book lined snug and a pool table. We shall definitely pop by again.

Heading for the overnight ferry from Newhaven, we were looking for somewhere to eat. Spotted the Tripadvisor review of Tuesday Curry night at The Hampden Arms and decided to give it a go. Would highly recommend, though perhaps booking is necessary as when we arrived there was only Tikka or Madras left. We had one of each, with poppadoms, onion bhajis, naan and bombay potatoes plus a drink and a mini pud. Great value, very friendly staff and other customers. Will go back again.

The Hampden Arms Tuesday curry night was a massive hit. They accounted for all tastes from mild to spicy and all I can say is WOW! The curry was absolutely amazing, and one of the best curries I’ve had in a long long time, all home made and even had popadoms, naan bread and onion bajhis. Highly highly recommend popping in for curry night, the staff were amazing and the service was incredible. Thank you Sam for cooking and not to forget the biscoff cheesecake… delicious!!!

A proper pub, freshly decorated with an external refurbishment still underway, great ale, (Harvey's & Long Man), and a good value pizza, as the regular menu was suspended because of an event.

The food is absolutely terrible, all frozen or canned, the dishes were dirty, it was horrible, the cook should be ashamed. The toilets weren't very clean either. It's a shame, the garden is nice. But it's the worst meal we've had in the UK in a long long time !

Been going to the Hampden arms off and on for about 3 years since I moved here from Brighton I think it’s a great pub a proper pub! loads of real ales great lagers loads of different nibbles the best I’ve ever seen in a pub to be honest and great pizzas and nice surroundings pool table and darts to be played on good locals to talk to the only reason I don’t go up there every day after work or weekends so much is because it’s on top of a hill and there’s no bus’s up there ! But I love this pub and think it need the Recognition of the way it is brilliantly Run and keeps the Old tradition of old pubs ! Well done landlord and landlady. Mick 🍺

A great village pub with a good range of beers. Great beer garden. Dogs welcome. Good value food. Always a friendly atmosphere. Visited with my son for lunch yesterday. Woman serving behind bar was lovely and friendly. My only gripe is that we ordered gammon steak with egg and chips which came out presented well however the gammon was cold. I told the cook it was cold and he replied it was meant to be as they don’t reheat gammon. They cook the steaks and keep them in the fridge. I found this strange as whenever I’ve had gammon and eggs before anywhere else the gammon has always been hot. I could understand if it was ham egg and chips but this was actual gammon steak. Nevertheless we ate it and it was nice. Looking forward to going back and trying the pizza menu. This is my local pub that I need to use more often.

We had heard good things about the Hampden but we must have called on an off day. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. We ordered our food and waited patiently, and waited, and waited. Entertained only by the frequent smoke alarm activation! The meat arrived first, dished up on cold plates. Then, a few minutes later, the potatoes were served. A few minutes longer, the vegetables arrived. A few minutes longer still and the gravy was brought to the table - all 10 lumps of it. The process to serve the whole meal took just over 7 minutes. Needless to say the first servings were stone cold by the time the last instalment arrived. Won't be rushing back.

Stopped off here with my brother on a Sunday lunchtime, from the outside it looked just like a country local , it was 1.30 pm and we were the only ones in there , the place looked really grubby , we ordered 2 lagers and stood at bar . I asked the landlord where everyone was to which he replied it was still early , the place was minging and we quickly finished our drinks and left , place needs a total refurb, never again

My TripAdvisor review of the Hampden Arms, South Heighton. The Landlord, who looks like Bob Harris from The Old Grey Whistle Test, made me a pizza, even though they weren't doing food. The Landlady came round from behind the bar to hug a customer who's brother has died. One customer offered me an oddly-shaped courgette (zucchini); another admired my idiosyncratic parking and gave me the thumbs up after I explained I'd just done a 13 hour day. Good selection of ales - cracking pizza.

Should have realised anywhere with tables free on Easter Sunday at 1.30pm wasn't going to be great. This Sunday Dinner was worse than school dinners. With boiled parsnips and brocolli that could only be described as boiled to death losing all colour and nutrients. Cold indistinguishable beef and lamb and yorkshires from Auntie Bessie. Massive waste of money only managed to get the landlord down to 8 pound per meal instead of 11.95 as we refused to put ourselves though the Sarah Lee dessert.

It's not often you find an old fashioned pub where you can walk in and have raucous and funny conversations with complete strangers openly at the bar, but this seems encouraged at the Hampden. They deservedly won Sussex Pub of the Year this year.

Like the Flying Fish in Denton, this is another excellent pub. Visited in October 2015 with my brother Mike for a couple of pints after our walk in the Denton & Bishopstone area of East Sussex. Very pleasant. I had visited with my brother a couple of years earlier on an evening when the pub has live music. It was excellent! They also have a 'room at the back' for smokers and I remember having conversations with some hairy bikers.
