The Grumpy Chef in Lewes

The food and service was excellent Couldn’t fault the food, we had a number of starters to share and all main meals to end with x3 puddings! The chef wasn’t grumpy either!! 🤣

So good we went back for breakfast!

One of our favourite places for lunch or dinner. A little bit quiet on some evenings but the food and service is always superb. They're also very accommodating when you want something extra or want a minor change to one of the dishes.

Again, the best breakfast in town. Excellent food and service. Go there every weekend and love it. Well done Grumpy Chef team x

Nice looking place, varied menu, I had the Crab Linguine which must have had the bare minimum of crab in it, lots of raw garlic, not good

Absolutely lovely evening, myself husband and the dog had tonight. Food was so good. We had the humous to start it was the best homous I have ever had so creamy the portion size was fabulous. Mains we both opted for burgers and they were piping hot so fresh and every bite was a poor delight. Pudding was crème brûlée was stunning. Bearing in mind they were rushed off their feet tonight due to seaford bonfire the service was fantastic always feel so welcome this is our fourth time of visiting first for a main meal and we had a wonderful night and enjoyed everything we had. And superb value for money a wine, starter to share, main each, pudding and coffee (under £70) The staff are wonderful and so friendly nothing is too much trouble. Feel so lucky to have found this gem and will be back soon. I am terrible at remembering to take photos but shall do next time as it is always so well presented.

Amazing place, been here many times over the years and cannot recommend enough.

Very disappointed in service ordered sandwich with out salad had to go back because it came with salad bread stale so went back a second time Someone else in party ordered brown bread it came as white no explanation given until asked said run out of brown would have been nice to have been infected of this Staff on the defensive stating “ I felt it and it wasn’t All in al needless to say we won’t be going back

Really good for lunch. Very busy. Staff helpful to myself as I have allergies and also they assisted a disabled customer.It was a wait for sausage sandwich but freeshly cooked. Busy with customers who seemed to stay a while. Good menu and prices.

The food was really tasty - we had chicken burger, the sea bass, and the kids bits and pieces, and were delighted! Had to patiently wait for the food to arrive, but that’s the price of freshly made food! Highly recommend.

Food was amazing. Roberto the chef is just the right amount of grumpy with his Italian flare. Staff are polite and well presented. A must visit destination on the coast.

We went to the restaurant in the evening after a good hike. It was absolutely lovely to be there: the food was delicious, the staff were welcoming and friendly. Totally recommend the place to visit 🫶

The staff were very warm and welcoming. I ordered soup of the day which was tomato and was offered a variety of different breads to go with it. I chose granary and the bread was lovely. Sadly the soup was very thin, watery and not especially flavoursome.

The food was lovely, portions quite small but good flavours . Disappointing service, they forgot out drinks and we had to return dirty glasses The place wasn't busy at all but we still waited for about 45min for simple fish dishes.I'd go again but allow extra time!. Other reviews are very good so perhaps I was a bad day for them.

A gem of a place! We had been disappointed with some options around the area then came here and revived lol the chef knows what they're doing because everything was fresh and ingredients complimented each other. The dessert was fantastic too. 10/10 would recommend.

Excellent food and service and smoothies to die for XXX

Heerlijk gegeten voor een goede prijs! Prima pasta maar vooral geweldige burger en heerlijke krab in eigen schaal. Ook voor kinderen goede opties. Bediening was zeer vriendelijk en gastvrij. Gewoon echt goed!

Nice place, good selection of drinks and food too. We came for breakfast. I ordered French toast and my wife had eggs Benedict. We asked for white bread but got seeded brown. The French toast was disappointing. Seeded brown bread does not work well for this. Especially such a thin slice. Needs to be thick fluffy white bread. As our food was being played another customer vomited right in front of the pass as our food was waiting to be sent out. The chef still sent it instead of re making it. Yes there was a few feet between the customer and my food but if it was me cooking I would have re made the food. No compensation to the bill either. Even without the customer vomiting I would still rate this average and would spend my money else where in future.

Came here for breakfast of my last day of my holiday in seaford. Me and my friend both ordered the eggs benedict and were completely shocked when it arrived. At first glance the holindaise was solid and when i cut into it, it had formed a thick eggy film on the top which resembled an omelette. It was very off putting and made me feel very nauseous, the taste was not much better- in the sense there was no taste at all. I tried to cut around the ‘solid film’ and then discovered that my egg was completely raw inside. i also tried to cut around this only to discover that the bread was completely soggy. This goes for both mine and my friends meal so this wasn’t a one off. I didn’t send it back as we were in a rush for the train and didn’t want an hassle but i felt i needed to share my experience. Other than that their hot chocolate was nice which is why i’ve give it a star.

Brilliant staff and great food.

Lovely atmosphere and staff were great with our 1-year-old, providing high chair and plastic cutlery. Portion sizes were on the small side. Really high quality sausage and bacon, but the bread was not great and only one slice served with a full English. The smashed avocado was ok, not smashed but instead very large chunks (not quite ripe) and whole leaves of coriander which would have been nicer if chopped as a little overpowering when you got one.

Excellent menu in fact it was difficult to decide what to eat so that alone will make us return! I had toasted Goats cheese, tomato and pesto sandwich. The amount of each item was ideal and the pesto was perfect. My friend had grilled Halloumi open sandwich drizzled with honey, also delicious. We even squeezed in desserts. The choice was too tempting to resist. Creme brulee was smooth with the top a delightful crack. Warmed chocolate brownie with icecream was my friends choice. Definitely recommend booking as it gets busy at popular times.

Looked around Seaford for a decent clean cafe at a reasonable price and came across this lovely place. Immaculately clean and very well priced and well organised. Staff friendly with great food and service. Went with my husband and mother in law, enjoyed the hospitality, food and atmosphere, would definitely recommend it and visit again. Would recommend goats cheese.basil and pesto toastie! Great food at a decent price 👍🏽 best chips in Seaford. Thank you for a lovely lunch

Fantastic food by a talented chef

Second visit, first three years ago. Had a delicious lunch with a friend yesterday on our day trip to see the Seven Sisters. Certainly not 'grumpy', the staff were very friendly and welcoming. Lovely place to stop off for a bite to eat and explore the town. Thank you

Staying nearby for a break we drove into Seaford looking for a cooked breakfast and came upon this place. Very busy, they turned customers away as they were full, we felt we were lucky to get in! Ordered 2 Full breakfasts and coffee which duly arrived, tasty sausages, all perfectly cooked with mushroom, tomato, toast, bacon and beans we ordered hash brown as extra but we weren’t charged. Coffee was excellent and staff very pleasant. Would highly recommend 😊

We have visited on long weekend holidays. Place was quite busy. The breakfast we had was light in portion but delicious.

Being a vegetarian, i had a very poor experience. All the food was prepared in bad oil that reeked of non-veg. Avo toast was nice but the french toast was a horror story. The tomato on the side made me want to puke as it tasted like it was made in beef oil. Least to expect is hygiene. Very disappointing.

Excellent French toasts and flat whites this morning. Very welcoming, friendly service too. First visit. Will return.

Unexpectedly fantastic! The Grumpy Chef is my new favourite place in Seaford. We tried it for the first time this week, we needed coffee and a rest so we sat at an outside table. We weren't expecting anything special but what a pleasant surprise. The staff were amazing, friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. I'm lactose and gluten free and found they offer a selection of milk alternatives and gluten free sandwiches. My sandwich and coffee was tasty and we will be back to try the menu. Overall the most impressive thing we're the staff and ambience. An excellent experience especially compared to our usual haunt, a competitor that is still closed.

A wonderful eating establishment. On the menu is a variety of excellent Sea food, sandwiches, burgers and vegetarian dishes. Excellent service, great atmosphere and I highly recommend this restaurant.

I ordered off the menu (as I don’t eat bread). I was worried it would be very average but in fact it was wonderful. So hard to come by when you’re a veggie! My partner’s food was great too.

By far the best meal that we had in Seaford. We ate there on a Saturday night and the food was so good that we ended up having 3 courses each (having planned to have just 1) and enjoyed fantastic service. The restaurant is busy during the day but was not busy when we went for dinner on a Saturday evening in January because everyone is going to the Italian but the food here at The Grumpy Chef is much better.

Very tasteless. We had the prawns with dipping bread. The bread was sliced shop brought. A roll or baguette would have been more suitable. The black pudding and chorizo salad, had no salad in it. The crab linguine was bland, with tinned crab. If you run out of fresh. Take the dish off the menu. I paid £2.50 per small glass of diet coke. Then watched the staff member pour it from a plastic litre bottle. Probably costing just over a quid from lidl. We will not go back there.

We have been fairly regular visitors here over 3 years but sadly it seems to have lost its way in the light of competition from new local eateries. Today's offering of 'tomato soup with pesto' was so disappointing - it looked so watery it looked like dishwater and was totally bland and tastless. It was served without the pesto and upon my asking the waitress where it was she said it was 'optional' despite us having been told it was tomato soup with pesto!! The 'soup' was accompanied by a slice of brown bread cut into two and smothered in butter whether I wanted it or not! No crusty bread then to go with the 'soup' and £6.50 is just a rip off. My partner asked me not to make a fuss about this at the time so perhaps Management will take notice of an unfavourable review about the price and quality of their awful soup!! Btw my partner enjoyed her toasted sandwich for £6.50 BUT her request for some bacon with it cost us an extra £1.50 for just one small rasher!!! Hardly endearing if they want their Customers to return without being Grumpy - we will not be!!!

Great place, but please sort out your lighting electrics. Hide the cables in the walls, some of the cables look worn and the connections don't look great. Also starter portions are too small for the price.

Visited for breakfast on a Sunday morning. Arrived after 10am and luckily there were free tables. The restaurant tab were all very friendly and efficient with our orders taken in good time. I ordered the greedy grumpy full breakfast, which was great, everything well cooked and a massive slab of black pudding, fantastic bacon, decent sausage, even the tomato was cooked well, a rarity in most breakfasts! The only thing I’d improve is to make the black pudding more spicy. 🫚🌶️ Would highly recommend!

Easily one of the best breakfasts I have had in Sussex not necessarily the biggest meal on first inspection but actually just right by the time we had eaten it All. however the Ingredients were top quality and cooked really well.and to be fair very good value for money considering the quality of the food.

Delicious, quick and great service

Cute and welcoming little cafe on the high street. Went there with both little ones and my husband for lunch. We ordered a salmon sandwich, a prawn sandwich and the mushroom one. They literally came as described, two thick slices of bread, bit of butter and one slice of smoked salmon.. for £6.50. Cokes came straight out of a bottle in a small glass.. no fizz left and for £2.50. Definitely a little steep. We won’t be returning.

If the Grumpy Chef prepared such incredible food, I can only imagine the culinary delights the Happy Chef would create. To be honest, the food was simply amazing. We ordered a burger and a chicken breast, and both dishes were exceptional. The staff were also exceptionally friendly, and the ambience added to the overall enjoyment of our dining experience.

Best breakfast I've had in a long time.

We had a tasty brunch on a quiet Sunday morning. Staff were attentive and nice and the breakfast food was delicious, I had the full greedy options with really did the trick! Others had an egg royale that was also good. Coffees were good quality too.

Neither cheerful not friendly but good food. Although Marie Rose sauce in prawn sandwich about sparce.

Really nice avocado and toast, we asked the waiter and it was made vegan for us which was fab! Warning: A lot of people got turned away as it was quite busy and some tables had been reserved.
