Absolutely to be avoided. The staff appear to think that they are doing you a favour by their mere presence. Complete unwarranted arrogance on all levels. The venue is just ok. Nothing special. The staff however think that they are. You are not. Avoid.

We came to the Hall on a Barista course. We were greeted with a smile and offered drinks. As I don’t actually drink coffee I opted for a hot chocolate..WOW the Atkinson’s hot chocolate is luxurious! We are now currently stocking it where I work since discovering how great it is! The service we received was exceptional and a special mention to Harry who was incredibly professional and excelled in teaching the Barista course to staff from The Old Sawmill. I will definitely be bringing my own family here in the future. Lovely staff, great setting and 100% amazing customer service! Thank you The Hall!

I've been there a few times now. Now for me, it does not hit it, but that is just me. I know others like it and go regularly. My orders are usually incorrect, I dont know what it is, but I feel i am asking them for too much even when its only a cup of tea...The sound I struggle with, its a hall but the noise bounces. Cakes, like anywhere in cafes, cost too much. When the library do people cafe and donation for awesome cakes and brew and chill service. Its ok, but not for me.

Having been lucky enough to have been spoiled by the wonderful coffees served in Italy, France etc, as well as the great teas in the East - one often finds the general tea and coffee culture in Britain a bit drab...None of that mediocrity here at Atkinson’s, though!!! Here the people know their coffees and teas, are proud of them and know how to get the best out of them! I had been here before, on my last trip to Lancaster. So I knew what to expect, and made sure I paid a visit again. In fact I came twice in just over 24 hrs, and also visited their new café in the castle. It is an amazing experience to get not just an espresso, but information about what the coffee variety it is, where it was grown, and what subtle tastes are within that given bean. The new experience for me on the second visit was to see my coffee ‘develop’ in the syphon contraption, and learn that it was an unwashed coffee from Nicaragua, grown by the descendant of an old traditional coffee farmer, and that there are notes of lemon, plum and chocolate to be found (all that information on a little card accompanying the drink). It certainly was a much stronger brew than the colour would have promised, with a complex taste and a freshness and richness that I had not tasted in a coffee before. I also stocked up on green teas in the shop next door, and glimpsed into the back room, where the coffee roasters are. I wish I did not live so far away, I would be here a lot more often!

I've been a regular at The Hall for the past year. I go because, while the food choice is limited and the wifi intermittent, the coffee is good and I enjoy the ambience. However, unfortunately the cafe is let down by at times very rude service. The poor service is not universal, but some staff give off a very couldn't care less, curt vibe when serving at the counter. They don't bother to acknowledge, let alone get to know, regulars and they're often more busy talking to their colleagues than serving. Then, to cap things off, during my last visit a male staff member asked me to move on to accommodate a bigger party. I accept I had just finished my cup of coffee, but there were many others in the cafe in the same situation. Looking back at other Tripadvisor reviews, I see others have also experienced the same treatment. I'm not a stranger - I'm a regular - surely my loyalty deserves a bit of courtesy rather than a brusque reminder that my time's up?

We were recommended The Hall for the excellence of its coffee but we were also aiming at lunch. The sandwiches were interesting and my friend K chose a ciabatta which the server said she'd bring to the table. K sat and drank her coffee and got twitchy about her sandwich, so I went to see what had happened to it. It was getting toasted! Big surprise as there was no info displayed about the treatment of sandwiches and the server never mentioned toasting. We'd all ordered sandwiches and none of us wanted toast. K's sandwich was replaced but we felt awkward and embarassed. A simple sign on the counter would have helped. The other downside were the cold drinks - an eclectic mix of mostly sharp and sour effervesence, nothing sweet or flat like cordial or fruit juice, which both I and K wanted. I drank iced water as the weather was so hot, and K reluctantly joined me. We all had cakes which were lovely, and came from the bakery attached to the Hall - you can actually see the baker at work. We also liked the airy space and the long tables but the servers need to check the order with the customer and not make assumptions.

Benches and a distinct aroma of coffee. Coffee comes from Atkinson coffee a couple of doors a way which is worth a visit too. There are coffee machines all over the place. Apart from a choice of coffee- we had a Chemex of Nicaraguan- there are homemade sandwiches and cakes. Home baking is part of the experience. All the sandwiches seemed to have cheese in them- we are lactose intolerant! The cakes were great and the coffee was so good, we visited Atkinson and bought Chemex coffee jug , filters and coffee!A quirky place but for coffee and cake, excellent and atmospheric

I am a common costumer of this cafe and have given them much of my business. During my exam period, my colleagues and I often go to revise as usually it is a lovely place to spend time. Many other people spend long periods of time to work and so it seemed to be common knowledge that one could endure their stay in the work environment. However, after buying both food and a coffee, it had been an hour and half that we had been studying for our very important exams. At this point, we were rudely interrupted and patronised by who I am assuming to be the manager, telling us to leave the back room of bigger tables that are designed for group study spaces, may I also add that the back room was empty so we were not occupying any space. Though we may be young this is not an excuse to treat costumers in such an aggressive way. Very disappointed. I doubt I will be giving you my business again.

This appears to be THE place for serious coffee-lovers: just along the road from Atkinson's; a fantastic range of coffees and a choice of the method used to prepare your drink. And after all that, they spoil it by playing background music at such high volumes that it is difficult to have a conversation. Prices, of course, are uncomfortably high: reasonable if you choose to have a specific blend of high-quality coffee made for you in a glass filter, less so if you just pick up a bottle and even have to open it for yourself. All in all, a visit here is a treat that is likely to disappoint.

Really looked forward to coming here but frankly somewhat disappointed. The staff are lovely, cakes unusual but tasty they and know their coffee, but prices and small portions let it down - on everything, coffee included! I like a small 8oz cappuccino but I think they’re serving 6oz...! No high chairs - really anti-family. Cmon, that’s a really easy fix!? I saw 5 prams come and go whilst I was in there. I wanted to like this place, but the principle of price and family friendly holds it back for me.Would recommend Journey Social around the corner - appropriately sized coffee (if a little large if anything) and priced more appropriately.

The Hall is hands down the best place to go if you want an actual, well made coffee that isn't full of sugary flavoured syrups. The cakes and toasted sandwiches from from the on site bakery are to die for and the minimal, intentionally shabby decor is really well thought out. My only criticism is that a couple of the staff are a bit robotic and not overly friendly. Don't leave it too late in the day if you want a bite to eat as the sandwiches will run out by mid afternoon

I needed somewhere warm and welcoming where I could make myself at home and drink excellent coffee and tea while I got on with some work on my laptop. I found the perfect place! I was looking forward to trying The Hall but almost walked past as it doesn’t seem to have a sign outside. Hot drinks were good although they were brought to our table one at a time which was a bit anti social; by the time the second drink came, the first was nearly cold. I had a smoked salmon sandwich which had a delicious filling but one of the slices of bread was stale. This was also brought to the table at a separate time from my daughter’s cake - as both were already made and only needed to be out on plates, this seemed like poor organisation! The staff were polite and they were obviously working hard (the cafe was very busy) but it wasn’t a particularly nice setting and I won’t be rushing back...

The Hall is my all time favourite coffee house. This is a family run business that takes care of its customers and values the importance of customer service. The coffee is sourced from all over the world where only the best is selected and served in the cafe and sold in adjoining shop. Don’t recognise some of the negative reviews. Great coffee and food. Staff always polite and engaged. My only criticism would be its hard to get a table quite often because of table huggers with laptops sitting on one cup of coffee and water for hours on end but I suppose that could be said of many coffee shops these days. How about cutting off the internet at lunchtime so more of us could enjoy your lovely toasted sandwiches?

Former regular customer. The only positives I can think of for this place are the cakes, and the staff who are always polite and visibly hard at work. Their focus on mopping often leaves the bar area understaffed- perhaps management should reconsider their priorities. A small group of what I assume to be the owners/management staff seem to care very little about their customers, have no customer service skills, and routinely mock or disrespect patrons who wish to display flyers in full view of everyone. I cannot think of a reason to go back as the value for money is appalling- the pre-prepared sandwiches are different sizes but the price only depends on the filling. You’d be lucky to not get a tiny, overpriced toastie. My brother’s cappuccino regularly arrives at a different temperature each visit as the staff gauge the milk temperature by touch rather than using a thermometer- it can arrive lukewarm, scalding hot, or anywhere in between. Their sales practices are a health hazard- I have missed a day at work due to false advertising, as a request for skimmed milk due to intolerance with my (tiny) Americano was readily accepted- I learned the hard way that I did not receive skimmed milk and was confined to bed the next day by a bad reaction. After switching back to my usual black filter coffee I learned that they “don’t do” skimmed milk; why is this not advertised on ordering? This seems to be a business that cares very little about customer satisfaction and prioritises profit and aesthetics.

My wife and myself decided to try out this much talked about establishment for the "DimSum takeover" and I couldn't have been more disappointed. The Management seemed to have no organisational skills and with the exception of one young Asian girl who seemed to be trying to do everything, the remaining staff were stood around in small groups awaiting instruction that never came. As for what we ordered, the bottled beer was pleasant enough but in order to get any food I had to stand in a corridor in a queue for 40+ minutes, bombarded by smoke and when I finally got served what I received was vastly over priced and bland to the extent that we finished up and had to visit the local Noodle House around the corner just to feel like we had eaten something. Lancaster has some wonderful eateries and is expanding its food scene all the time. Unfortunately this is not one of them, attend at your peril

The coffee roaster atkinson adds that iconic smell over the city on a roasting day, they have been doing it for quite a few decades, and that practice definitely makes it perfect, while the coffee is sold in most pubs and restaurants across the region, The Hall next door somehow pulls it off even better, maybe they treat the beverage with the respect it deserves, and this is replicated in the end product.

The Hall is has to be my favourite place in lancaster, I visit there so often it's like my home away from home. All the staff are welcoming and friendly, the atmosphere is quite hipster and boho with cute little features from the locations previous life as the Priory Hall. The tea's and coffees here are amazing and there's so much to choose from! If you're unsure what certain drinks will taste like or what would be best for you, the staff are super friendly and help you out in any way they can. The cakes and pastries from a separate company situated in the Hall called The Bakery are insane and must to try. They do provide sandwiches too which are just as good. This cafe is a good place to meet up with friends, grab a quick drink or snack and with all the students around town there's always someone in there with their laptop open and typing away at their work. Over the weekend, the cafe opens late and (although they're also offered throughout the day) alcohol is available, sometimes they even host music nights with small bands or solo artists performing. If you ever visit lancaster The Hall is a must, even Ian McKellen visited! If it's too busy I'd recommend heading over the road to its sister The Music Room- a smaller version but just as cute.

I fairly frequent stopping place these days - after many years in Melbourne, coffee standards need to be high. The clientele tend to be a few students, but predominantly middle class Lancastrians of different persuasions, judging from the conversations. The fact that there are pushchairs and dogs there shows how difficult it must be to find other venues for either. Coffee good, up to scratch. cakes, however, are amazing and made in the attached bakery. Two things 1) there used to be a meeting room you could book for free - is it still there? i saw it 6 months ago, but now no mention. And 2) there aren't enough places to sit. Put some tables in the corridor or the room full of coffee sacks (underused), or give us some more intimate spaces rather than a long table. Shorten it by 2 perhaps and put in some singles. The high seats are bloody uncomfortable.

Let me start by saying that the coffee here is fantastic, as is the food. They obviously take great pride in their produce, and Lancaster is a better place for their presence. It's become more and more popular, and as a result it's in need of an upgrade. The last three times we've tried to visit, it's been completely packed and we've had to leave without ordering anything. On all occasions, there have been others doing the same. It's a testament to the quality of the brews on offer, but it's also rather annoying. Two causes - the seating layout is rather inefficient, and there are too many people with laptops camping out in the limited seating and using the place as their office. It's hard to knock stars off because it's too popular, but visiting this place has become a frustrating lottery.

This cafe could be really good, they have the right atmosphere and trendy decor, but fall short on some basics. Numerous visits have left us disappointed with the lack of food on offer, with pre-made sandwiches often thin on the ground. A simple request for some sugar for my husband's coffee was dealt with dismissively by the staff. I was told to go and get sugar from another table. This is not a big thing but it is an example of the unhelpful attitude of the staff in this establishment. Customer service training would really help to make this place more welcoming and pleasant.

The Hall is absolutely gorgeous inside with its decor and quirky style. This is my favourite place to come and grab a cub of Atkinson's coffee. Come here frequently with friends

After a walk into town with friends we went for coffee having never visited here before. The place was packed but we managed to gather some stools to sit at a high table then re grouped at a table when it was free.. the coffee was just to die for served beautifully and hot which I like. We shared a piece of the lemon drizzle cake simply heaven! A must for all coffee lovers and a great place to meet.

Went along to an organised event. The drinks are expensive, short measures and the manager was less than pleased to be dealing with us. Will not return and would certainly not recommend the place. Places like this are the reason the coffee chains have taken off so successfully.

We visit the hall regularly and cant fault it, apart from maybe not being able to get a table, but that just shows what a great place it is. We always have good service and great quality food and drinks.

And it is quite simply the best coffee we can find in Lancaster.Unfortunately for us, we called after eating lunch nearby and so had no room for cake - bad planning I know! Friendly staff, drinks brought to your table, quite a buzz to the place. And they do know how to make a flat white.

Great place to get down to business, fuelled by the best coffee in town and access to some interesting alternative twists on classic cakes and cookies to satisfy your sweet tooth. Really cool atmosphere and people are always super chill and really nice.

I've been to The Hall a couple of times in the daytime but this was my first evening visit. They were open late for the Jazz Festival and had a brilliant band playing. The coffee was lovely and it was the perfect environment for live music. Wish it happened every Friday!Staff were really friendly and helpful too. Thanks!

The coffee is good. The cakes are good. The other food seems overpriced. The staff and clientele are sometimes a bit too cool for school. Had a couple of coffees and a pastry this morning and they were good - better than some other places in town - but not the best I have ever had.

Improved since I was last here and a steady flow of visitors kept it practically full on a Sunday afternoon. Primarily a hot drinks and cake establishment but there's a baker's there too. The toilets have been improved too and are spotless. Pear and chocolate cake was delicious.

Enough said in the title. Simply great coffee - I can't comment on the cakes or bread but they serve the best flat white I've ever tasted. Thanks guys.

Great coffee, wonderful cake, on-site craft bakery, excellent beers, funky decor and a lively atmosphere. Did I mention the silent movies playing on the wall? Or the live music nights? Possibly the highest HQ* in Lancaster - MacBooks aplenty making use of the free WiFi. Bus stop directly outside the front door, what's to not like?* Hipster Quotient

Lovely place for coffee, beer or just to listen to music. This is one of the best places in Lancaster, It's great for relaxing during the day with a cup wonderful coffee roasted next door at the coffee shop. Or a great venue where you can see live music, I can't recommend this place enough, it's a must if you visit Lancaster.

Fabulous coffees. Food is OK as well. Quirky surroundings. The downside is that it attracts some young adults who buy just one cup of coffee and then spend some hours occupying a seat whilst writing their dissertation or browsing social media!

Best flat white I've had since I was in raglan NZ. I'd highly recommend coming here. I also had a siphon coffee that was beautiful. Just off to buy some beans from the shop next door.

Of corse my Birthday Cake tasted alright. The volunteers there were friendly towards me as I was a Choirboy of The Priory, Service of my Birthday Cake was quick but there was no tea or coffee there for my mam"Carrie Hays" or for myself on that morning in 1983.

This place is trying way to hard on the detail and not covering the basics very well. I would like coffee in a mug not a school child's water cup. Thought the barista's coffee was pretty average. There was an attempt to place a coffee shop as a premium product, artisan breads etc. which were very expensive £3.50 for a loaf? The cakes looked delicious but didn't try. The place was quite busy, so has a clear clientele, but needs focus on the basics for me.

Visiting Lancaster for the day with a group of friends, we had read about Atkinson's online and decided to give it a go. I had brought along some soya milk in case there wasn't any available during the day (I like my tea and coffee with 'milk'). Once inside there was a short wait during which I had a little look at what was available on the menu and spotted, to my genuine delight, that there was soya milk on the counter! This may seem like a small thing but it makes all the difference having a full soya latte and lots of places still don't carry soya milk, which is why I often bring my own. Anyway, Atkinson's have it and as I walked back to my friends I saw the sign that all vegan chocolate lovers secretly wish for...'Vegan chocolate cake!' One piece left on a plate in the counter! Perfect! There were two people in front of us so I was hoping that neither of them would be after 'that' cake. Happily, it was still there a minute later, and I ordered it, along with a soya latte (my favourite hot drink). The cake was delicious, rich, moist and with a lovely chocolate fudge style icing. (Please see the pic). The coffee was lovely too, served in a vintage style glass. The staff were lovely and friendly, if a little bemused at my excitement at finding cake labelled as 'vegan!'The cafe itself is simply laid out, with a long service counter on one side (you can see this in some of the other photos on here) and a range of tables from high to low. Clean rest facilities (with an ingenious toiler roll holder - see pic!) There is also a bakery, where fresh cakes and bread can be baked to order and next door a fantastic shop selling all manner of coffee, tea and chocolate(!). Part way through we noticed an old film being projected onto the wall, with subtitles!, so we could follow it for a little while as we sipped our drinks.Very happy to recommend this coffee shop. I'm hoping for more vegan cakes next time I go! :-)

On one of the many rainy days in Lancaster a small group if us decided to take shelter in this cafe and realised we'd found a little gem. The coffee and hot chocolates are delicious and the cakes looked extremely inviting. The atmosphere is very cute and rustic with locals popping in and students studying at tables. It's size doesn't fit it's popularity though with some people struggling to find a seat and having to wait until people moved or standing up at the side of small tables. The staff were all extremely friendly and welcoming, would definitely recommend nipping in here for a coffee or two.

We have visited in the past and always been reasonably happy. Today was not a good experience. The bread was stodgy for both the egg mayonnaise baguette and the rarebit. The egg was congealing and the ‘seasonal salad’ was just a mishmash of little bits! So rather expensive at £27.85 for the above plus two traybakes and a small pot of tea. Sadly highly unlikely to return.
