Superb! Haddock and chips along with pie 👌 Traditional pub but keeping up with the times. Brilliant pub and service, a rarity.

Visited for food. The beetroot, walnut and goat cheese starter was impeccable. Beautifully presented, and tasted incredible. It was a very well thought out and balanced dish. Braised lamb main was also fantastic. Soft, tender and flavourful meat, and every accompaniment landed perfectly as well. I can't wait to return.

We had a Sunday lunch at the Halfway Inn. Had high expectations based on the good reviews. Unfortunately the food wasn't great. All of our Yorkshire puddings were burnt. Portions were quite small. The crumble for dessert was very tart and runny.

Had high hopes based on their social media but ended up disappointed. Pub was busy at lunch time which was promising but car park is too small. Table was by the fire but this gave out very little heat. Back was to the window which was drafty and cold as two of the windows couldn't close properly. Was frozen and heard other people commenting to the staff on how cold it was so no point in asking to move. It was lunchtime and busy but no atmosphere and tables were close together. Had told them that we had two coeliacs at the time of booking. Menus didn't state what was gluten free and waiter wasn't sure so went to check. She still didn't seem particularly confident when she returned and hadn't written the options down. She did ask if we were coeliacs or had an intolerance which was good. Had the venison cottage pie with greens which was tasty. However there was a large amount of potato on top to get through before you found the small amount of meat and there was only a small amount of greens accompanying it. I don't like too big a meal so the size overall was fine but expensive for what I got. My husband ordered the sausages which he said were tasty but not very hot. He thought it was expensive for sausages! The pudding options for coeliacs was limited to ice cream or sorbet. Very disappointed that they couldn't even make the crumble gluten free. The menu online is a sample and when we enquired we were told the menu changed regularly based on local seasonal food so they couldn't be more specific however the menu on the day was exactly the same as online. No specials available so I don't see why they can't label their menu with gluten free etc. The booking process is online and you have to give your credit card details. You also have to confirm you are coming the day before and if you don't turn up they charge you an exorbitant amount. Very disappointed as went for a birthday meal. Will not be returning.

Very disappointed. As locals and regulars to the Halfway we have found standards have slipped over the past year judging by our Saturday experience. It’s the little details, a card on the table with out-of-date activities, staff smoking at the entrance, overcooked fish and chips (thick rock hard batter that you’ll need a hacksaw to cut through) and it’s become expensive… £22.5 for sausages or £24 for the chalk salmon (£22 at the H&G). Have been big fans of Liam and Nathan but they have taken their eye off the ball.

The Halfway is in a beautiful setting and the food is fantastic. We visited a second time this afternoon for my Dad's birthday, but unfortunately our visit was marred by a bizarre interaction with the co-owner. During our meal, a couple with a very disruptive dog entered the dining room, and it was quite clear from the looks on the faces of other diners that we were not the only party perturbed by this. We asked two members of waiting staff on separate occasions if they would speak discreetly to the couple with the dog, but these requests were ignored. Evidentially the dog owners were established regulars, for their complete lack of respect for other diners was not challenged by staff who seemed apprehensive to engage with them. Nathan, the co-owner, then approached our table and adopted an extremely confrontational stance, leaning over my Mum to assert his authority in some respect. When we mentioned the fact that we felt compelled to leave a bad review due to being ignored repeatedly, he asked us to leave, rather than engaging in any sort of reasonable discussion to solve the matter when prompted. To say we were shocked would be an understatement. Two simple requests to challenge the negligent owners of a particularly noisy and untrained pet were not met, and instead we were asked to leave in the middle of a full dining room. I invite the venue to apologise for such an embarrassing situation for diners who were trying to enjoy a Sunday lunch. We even jibed to the table next to us, who laughed and nodded in agreement, that if you offer a simple complaint, you get a free meal.

Had a fabulous meal here. Firstly the beer was super clean and fresh. Guiness and Golden Ale were perfect. We had one allergy in the family group and it was catered for without question and zero stress. All the starters not only looked beautiful but were clearly prepared with care and through. Taramasalata was smooth and not overpowering. Breads were incredible. Don’t know if they were made in house but they tasted like it. Wild mushrooms on toast and Asparagus and Buratta too were fresh and really well seasoned. Fish and chips were clearly made in really clean and fresh oil. Batter perfect. My Pork Chop held so much flavour and was seasoned to perfection. Great produce! Would absolutely return. And can’t forget the FOH team. Super helpful. All smiles. And made the visit. We were with a little one and she was looked after like an adult even during a busy service. No wonder The Halfway is always busy. What a gem.

Would not eat here again. We had an 8:30PM dinner reservation, and we were running 15 minutes late. We tried calling the restaurant 2 times to let them know and ask if it was ok to still come or if it was too late, but no one answered the phone. When we got there, the team working there that night were not friendly. We were told you must rush to get your order in, in a very rude manner, then when we had 2 questions on dishes, the waitress did not give us an answer - she just wanted us to order and did not answer on questions. Her rudeness and the lack of checking back by her and the rest of the team working there made it a bad experience. And the food was really good. We felt bad being late, and tried out best, and so we do not appreciate the restaurant treating us so rudely. As good as the food was, I would never go back here and not recommend it to anyone else - not worth the drive or time.

I came here one lunchtime craving a burger and excited for the veggie offering. We were quickly seated by the window by our very friendly server and were informed there was an issue with a printer that was causing delays. Unfortunately it took about an hour for our food to arrive. Onto the burger. Soft buns, nice charr on the patty, great texture from the pulled mushroom and tangy with cheese and peppers that were needed with the richness of the burger and mayo. I personally felt it was occasionally overpowered by the pesto mayo which was a bit heavy, and the burger could have used a bit more acidity to balance things out more. Perhaps some tomato or salad as well for freshness and crunch? We also had an issue with the burger containing a small piece of very hard non-food item which luckily I noticed before biting down too hard. I believe this is an issue with the supplier and not Smiths. It was dealt with swiftly and professionally by the staff who were absolutely excellent. Fries and accompaniments were perfect - crispy, fluffy and well flavoured. Unfortunately our visit was let down by a long wait and issues with the veggie burger but judging by the other reviews, this definitely seems like the exception rather than the norm. I did feel that the burger was smaller than expected and didn’t offer the best value for money compared to other veggie burger offerings I’ve had elsewhere. Flavour wise, everything was good but definitely room for some improvement. If I ever pass through again, I would be happy to try them again. The serving staff were polite, professional and a credit to the team.
