Fantastic food, exception service! So impressed! This is a place were they can't do enough for you,! The owners are so lovely and they have a great young chef, who has no problem with Tailoring his menu to suit everyone. Restaurant quality food at pub prices!! we have frequented this establishment on several occasions, and thus far we've never bin disappointed! The cod loin with barley broth is defiantly different but so tasty and the lamb rack was cooked to perfection!! We were lucky enough to reserve the last table on New Year's Eve! Can't wait! But we'll in before then!! Fantastic job, keep it up guys

Very dissappointed. Our friends took us out for a celebration of our God daughter's graduation on our recommendation and I was so embarrassed. We had all eaten there about a year or two ago and had enjoyed the experience very much. This time, however, the pub had been newly refurbished which had taken the charm away and there was the "death knell" of every good village pub hanging on the wall- an enormous flat screen TV showing vintage 60s and 70s pop! This killed the evening. Our village got one a few years ago and now its closed for good! .The service was atrocious. My friends had booked the table for 7.00pm so that their daughter could set off on a long drive at a reasonable hour but it took over an hour for the first course to arrive! The excuse was that there was another table of 12 and that everything was cooked from fresh. The resturant seemed quite empty and I couldnt see any large party and I would expect any resturant to cook from fresh. Short-staffed in the kitchen is more the truth. Then the man at the bar decided it was a good idea to shout out to us several times "is everything alright table number 6"- I felt like i was in a bingo hall or on a boating pond being called back to base. Two of the party were vegetarians and seemed to get very short rations for their tomato and mozzarella tart served in a bowl (why?- what's wrong with a plate?). In fact most people's main courses were in bowls. My seafood tagliatelli was the worst I've ever eaten- way too much- half the amount would have sufficed, It had a large strip of dilled smoked salmon draped over the top which was difficult to cut with the fork provided- (eventually a spoon was brought), bony whitebait which were just unpleasant, over-cooked squid and prawns all swimming in about a pint of poorly seasoned cream (which doesnt work with dill) slopped in the bottom of the enormous bowl-no finesse!. Everybody's bowl was drizzled in a balsamic swirly dressing to make it look pretty but added nothing to the meal. The portion control needs sorting with huge portions on some plates and pitiful portions on others. If you are going to serve 16 oz steaks you are unlikely to get your customers to order pudding as they will be too full. You could try offering a range of sizes. Again the puddings took ages to come. All the puddings looked OK but as I had had acres of cream in the first course I definitely didnt want the only option of cream-based puddings with cream or ice cream or heavy winter puddings in the second so I sat out. You need a couple of fruit-based options and perhaps a sorbet or a light summery mousse, fruit pie or cheese cake (which was off the menu) rather than bread and butter pudding or steamed chocolate fondant in July. There was a strawberry tart but I had expected that it too would have creme pat base so I didnt order it but it looked like it didnt - just fruit in pastry. You need to get rid of the TV,or split the pub into two with a resturant section away from the telly and bar- pub with a resturant or resturant which do you want to be? You also really need to improve/change the menu and definitely the quality of the cooking, get more staff in the kitchen and improve your customer service if you want to continue to charge these prices and get repeat custom. The charm and service has been lost at the expense of trenyisation- we wont be back.

A party of six turned up Saturday evening without a booking, and while initially it looked as though we might not be able to sit down to eat our hosts were very accommodating. A wait of no more than 30 minutes, and a table was found for us.The Half Moon has recently been refurbished very tastefully, and the ambience was very much to our liking. The food was excellent, well presented and prices were not over the top. Several of us had the seafood tagliatelle which was to die-for if you like fresh prawns, squid, smoked salmon and sprats in a creamy sauce. Service was discreet, friendly and helpful.

Vibrant country pub/restaurant, recently refurbished. Had a truly excellent seafood platter for 2, washed down with a nice sauvignon blanc. Only downside is the real ale selection which consists theakston, theakston black Bull and tetley(!). All pretty much the same taste and strength. Could really do with getting a decent craft beer like Brewdog punk ipa or such. Even a jaipur would be good. Just something with a bit of taste rather than the bland selection currently. On the whole though an excellent place and a lovely village setting. Would highly recommend and will definitely be back.

Popped in for Sunday lunch today having just seen this place on a Sunday ride out and what a wonderful surprise . The surroundings and service were second to non and the food, where do we begin? We had the pork Sunday lunch and it was absolutely delicious. Gorgeous melt in the mouth pork and crispy crackling with delightful potato and vegetable accompaniements. Crockery and cutlery were all of high class and attention to detail was ever evident. The dessert of bread and butter pudding with chocolate chips was " truly scrumptious" . Give this place a visit it was a truly pleasant surprise. We will definitely go back with family and friends in tow. Well done to the hosts a winning formula

I'd missed this place following its sale and subsequent closure for refurbishment. And what a refurbishment! The bar and dining room are beautifully decorated in a classic Farrow and Ball style and the combination of rustic dining tables and chairs, big leather sofas and coffee tables all backed by an unintrusive but attention catching music soundtrack create the perfect ambience for a relaxed dining experience. The food, service and attention to detail were excellent and the bill was a pleasant surprise. Many thanks for a perfect evening - we'll be back time and time again. Trevor & Julia Hardaker.

Our group of 4 people booked a table for 20.30 hrs, we arrived on time to be told that they were running a little behind schedule. At 21.40 our starters finally arrived. One of the party ordered the fishcakes which were served on a large plate and engulfed the 2 fishcakes as they were slightly larger than a 50p piece and approximately 1cm thick. 2 of the party ordered the moules, which as per the menu came in a red wine sauce!!. The mussels were small and inferior in quality. The 4th guest ordered the 3 scallops on black pudding, this was probably the best starter of the 4 orders. For main course one guest ordered the calves liver with pork from the menu, when it eventually arrived there was no pork included in the dish. We asked the extremely pleasant waitress why this had occurred and she replied chef decided to remove this item from the dish!!2 of the guest ordered the salmon one of which was cold and uncooked, this was returned to the kitchen for reheating. The 4th guest ordered the sea bass which was cooked to perfection.Whilst we were offered a free drink to compensate us for the late service it no way compensated us for the dreadful dining experience. In conclusion, it would appear the chef is not up to the challenge of producing good food.

The restaurant has been very nicely refurbished but the Sunday lunch was not great. Tough meat with burned yorkshires and child's portion was actually larger than adults. Pudding was a disaster with 1 being forgotten and the other two cold in the middle. They took ages to reheat and were then burned on the outside as a result. The missed pudding still didn't arrive until everyone else had nearly finished. We decided not to mention the hairs that 2 of us found in the puddings as we'd already effectively written off the course. The management's response was to slightly reduce the cost of the delayed deserts when most restaurants would without hesitation strike them completely off the bill. I also thought £6 for 2 scoops of ice cream for a 4 year old was quite steep. Ironically they've improved the decor from the previous owners but the food was definitely better when we visited a couple of years ago. I doubt we will be returning as there are much better options for Sunday lunch in the area.

I visited the Half Moon Inn on Friday 1st May with a friend. Following a recent refurbishment, the pub has recently reopened and they started serving food on Friday night. I was so pleasantly surprised and delighted by our evening that I haven't stopped smiling since! The pub is small but perfectly formed. It is a village pub that has managed to keep it's regulars happy as well as welcoming new faces. The decor is tasteful and refreshing with superb attention to detail - there has obviously been a lot of work in the planning! There are comfortable sofas in front of a cosy fire, as well as a practical banquette seating area reminiscent of a traditional hostelry. Although there is only one ladies toilet, it is clean and tidy with individual hand towels and Molton Brown soap - these small touches won't be lost on the female clientele. (I took a sneeky look in the men's too and love the fact that the owners have kept the original features while updating the facilities.) The restaurant is cosy at 38 covers, but is laid back and uncluttered with stripped pine tables and high back leather chairs. The tables are laid beautifully with quality glassware and crockery. (I have a thing for wine glasses and was pleased to find large Bordeaux glasses to accompany my red wine.) On the subject of wine, the wine list, whilst not extensive, has been well thought through and offers very good value for money. (I was thrilled to find Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc and will be returning on a sunny day to quaff it in the cute outdoor seating area, especially as it was only £32 a bottle!) I chose a delicious Barolo to accompany our food choice and it went down well with the generous portion of steak and chips ordered by my companion from the "something simple" menu. I opted for the calves liver with caramelised onions and champ from the "something special" menu and special it was! The menu, divided into "something simple", listing traditional gastro pub delights such as Pie of the Day, scampi and juicy burgers and "Something special", including sea bass mushroom rissotto, offers excellent value for money. I was spoilt for choice and impressed by the number of exciting vegetarian options. (Although there is no specific children menu, they will also serve smaller portions for "nippers".) The new managers, Mark and Caroline, couldn't do enough for us and when I commented that one of the choices in the "Assiette of desserts", a coffee creme brûlée, should be served as a stand alone dessert, Caroline offered to get the Chef to make me one. (I didn't accept as after 2 delicious courses I was replete!) In short, I would highly recommend this unique little pub, whether you are planning on a 3 course meal or just passing on your walk/cycle around the Riding. The new team are efficient and friendly and the atmosphere in the pub delightfully cosy. I am looking forward to sampling the Sunday lunch menu at the earliest opportunity!

Visited recently for the fourth time. The Half Moon is a proper pub rather than a 'gastro' pub with no real interest in non diners. The food has always been fantastic and reasonably priced. The staff are attentive and never intrusive and the management team (who are also the owners) on the ball.Unlike a lot of modern pubs this is obviously well liked by locals and there was no pressure to eat if a good and well kept beer and good company is all that is wanted. Each Christmas we try to choose somewhere new yet central to meet up with family, this year it was the Half Moon at Newton-on-Derwent.Our booking was for 13:45 and the greeting was warm and friendly though the pub was not busy with only two other parties in situ. The menu was far from extensive but adequate, as was the portion size, with the exception of the Haddock and chips and no I didn't have that! or the 10 ounce Sirloin steak which I wish I had had.I had the Liver, Sausage and Bacon casserole which comes with Buttery Mash and herb dumplings. As I do not like dumplings I asked for them to be omitted, the casserole was excellent although I would have liked a little more of it.The service was good though we were left 25 minutes before our order was taken, due to the time of our booking the atmosphere was low but the ambiance was good. I think the portions were a bit small for the price asked. none of us had starters but some had deserts which were again excellent.

There were 9 of us in our party, arriving for our annual meeting of my husband's old college friends. We have known each other since 1980! It was a very blustery night but the bar was full of early evening diners and drinkers. We were greeted warmly by the owners, Steve and Alex and ordered several pints of Theakston's and a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. As this was a Christmas meal out we had pre-ordered our food. This had been a difficult decision as we could order 3 courses from a Special menu for an inclusive price of £21.95 or mix and match from the main menu as well.My starter of Prawn Spring rolls was overflowing with tasty prawns wrapped in a light and crispy "roll". Other starters included Mushroom and Chestnut soup, smoked salmon and a black pudding stack. These were all quickly demolished by hungry farmers and their wives! Mains followed of which I had chosen Salmon en Croute. Apart from beautifully tasty and flaky fish it was spread with cream cheese and chive and then encased in crispy puff pastry, served with homemade chips and plenty of perfectly cooked, glossy seasonal vegetables including sugar snap peas, and sprouts! There was also a delicious pot of dill and butter sauce to accompany it. Others enjoyed turkey, lamb shank, fish pie and cod loin. All 9 plates were cleared with everybody commenting on how delicious their meal had been. We had a welcome short break before the very polite and well trained waitress came to take our dessert order. Another difficult choice as there was a good selection to choose from. Mincemeat crumble, Christmas pudding, Cheesecake, Chocolate Brownie or Crème Brulee to name a few! The mincemeat crumble, served with custard was delicious, just enough without being too heavy. The cheeseboard was another popular choice and was served on a slate tile with chutney and fruit. Again everything was well presented and tasty.. We had a very enjoyable evening with attentive and caring staff. The special price was very reasonable too, top notch food at an affordable price.Thank you, we will be back!

My other half had the haddock goujons. Again beautifully cooked with the batter so hot and crispy. The main course more difficult to choose. Some classic dishes and we landed on the pork belly and the fish and chips with mushy peas. A very filling evening meal which we loved and will look forward to trying again. The service was very prompt and efficient by a very pretty young waitress. The bar was tended by the owner/landlord and offered an extensive selection of draught beers and lagers along with a good range of wines and spirits. We had a flyer through the door offering a starter & main course at the Half Moon for £14. When we arrived for our booking we were shown to a dark, dark table - it had high dark wood church pews either side of the table which blocked out all of the light from the small windows behind (this was a summers evening). There was no lighting whatsoever where we were seated & it looked miserable. We asked if we were able to move and this was declined. We asked for the offer menu and was told it only ran Mon & Tues (the evening we went was Wednesday). The menu given was limited and uninspiring, we asked for the specials menu & was told it only ran Thursday onwards by a rather defensive waitress (note don't go on a Wednesday- or in our case don't go at all!)The fish pie I ordered (£12) was in a small vegetable dish and the veg was in a recepticle the size of an egg cup, although not a large eater the amount served was ungenerous to say the least. The waitress then took away my friend's unfinished drink - it was so dark she hadn't realised the glass was still full and had to bring it back. The fish & chips (£12) ordered - the fish was not properly cooked with around half a dozen chips. The very average unchilled glass of pinot grigio cost £6 (this charge is more than the award winning Blue Bicycle restaurant in York) . This pub is pertaining to be something it isn't, the staff were unhelpful and unfriendly.

On the recommendation of friends, we visited The Half Moon, Newton on Derwent with my sister in law and husband to celebrate their 47th Wedding Anniversary and were extremely disappointed. We received a warm welcome and we all ordered Thai Fish Cakes starters on the specials menu board. We were all expecting thick fish cakes (say 5cm x 20mm) with a soft consistency containing fish and spices. What we received were 4cm x 3mm deep fried fish cakes of a solid brown chewy consistency that, on asking, were told contained salmon, prawns and tuna that had been ground into a paste before deep frying. Three of our main courses were excellent, lamb steaks, sea bass and prawn stir fry but the fourth, a chicken breast with sauce on the side, was dry and stringy, (more then half of it was left). My brother in law spoke to the owner regarding the above and was met with a rude and negative response; whilst not expecting any recompense an acknowledgment and an apology would have been acceptable.

We returned to this pub after our last visit over a year ago when we weren't overly impressed. However, the owners have worked hard to create a warm welcome, a varied menu and good ambience. The food was excellently cooked and well presented, service was attentive without being intrusive and we will be back! Not the cheapest place on offer but still good value and plenty of vegetables and potatoes come with main courses and the offer of more if required. Booking recommended as it does get very busy especially Friday and Saturdays.

A small pub/restaurant in a small village a little off the beaten track but not far from the A1079 York - Hull road..Friendly owners who work to build the reputation, we were given a warm welcome, and there was an extensive choice of perfectly cooked and nicely presented dishes, and they stress as they serve the meals that if you require anything at all, eg extra veg then be sure to ask. A member of a party with a large appetite requested more rice and the response time was impressiveVery popular so be sure to bookIt was full the night we went, and there was a warm welcoming real fire - just the thing on a cold wintery night.
