Do not eat the Christmas lunch here. We made the mistake of ordering the filled Christmas Yorkshire pudding lunch for our work do at £12 a pop and it was dire. Two slices of thin industrial turkey loaf, a bit of overcooked veg and skin on boiled potatoes which were sold as roast. Yorkshire pud was underdone. We all agreed it was awful. £200 later, staff didn’t care. Don’t waste your money.....

Unfortunately I've been here twice now and feel I have to write a negative review. The food here is not even worth a 1 star. I've had both the meat and veggie platters, both are a disappointing array of very overly-deepfried samosas, onions rings, chips etc. The brie salad is awful - lumps of brie with a few bits of tomato, onion, cucumber and a mountain of packet one-type salad leaves, £8 is over-priced for this. No imagination is used creating these dishes. There is very limited vegetarian food and not one vegan dish (unless you count a portion of chips), which is very old-fashioned. Meals came out at different times to the rest of my table. Overall not a nice place to go.

Rang and booked this venue several weeks ago for a birthday party. Went into the hotel three weeks ago choose the buffet confirmed the booking was told they did not need a deposit. Arranged how the tables were to be set up etc. Rang today to book a room for the night of the party and was told that they were double booked. We could not have the room. I asked if they were going to pay my deposit for the band that I had booked no joy there. One of my guests had already booked a room for the night I have been told they will get a refund lets hope. When were they going to tell me I could not have the room the party is in two weeks. What a shambles it stinks I wouldn't mind but we sat and discussed the party with a member of staff. Good thing is we have a better venue now. Why bother to make a booking when they are not capable of seeing it through. Told today we had not paid a deposit, tried twice to leave a deposit was told it was not required. What sort of place is this a hotel or a hostel. I am not impressed when were we going to be told of the double booking on the night of the party. Nice.

Good, modern areas and large outside seating area. Good for waiting for trains or grabbing something to eat. Food is good and decent amounts but nothing extraordinary. Plenty of space around tables so you never feel enclosed too much.

Loud soulless cold migraine inducing "young professionals" hang out, where the tinny pounding muzak is so loud - even at 5 to 6 in the evening means the pseudo yuppies have to shout to make themselves heard. An ugly and characterless dive where the ugly assault on ones ears is almost criminal. The arkles beer is overpriced and unpalatable too. Avoid Avoid Avoid

When we travel, breakfast is perhaps the most important meal of the day. Breakfast at Great Western did not disappoint us in getting the the day started.

Popped in for one last drink after getting the train back from a night in Reading. There are 2 bars (well one which you can be served at from 2 sides of the place). We were the only ones in the whole place other than someone already being served on the other side of the bat. After waiting a good few minutes the waitress popped her head up and said she'd be with us in a bit. We waited. Another person came in to the other side of the bar and when she had finished serving her customer she served them next, despite us having waited nearly 10 minutes by this point. Needless to say we left and had a drink next door

I booked our works Christmas lunch party at The Great Western Hotel and received faultless service from the offset. The staff were very accommodating and friendly, even bringing their Christmas Party menu forward especially for us! They managed a large group of 50 with ease and were helpful at every stage of the booking including those that had dietary requirements, nothing was too much effort. Everyone enjoyed their food, of which the quality and quantity for the cost was very good. The menu choice wasn't massive but ideal for our requirements. The tables were decorated for the festive season AND we had a surprise talented musician (with comedy skills) to entertain us as we ate - at no extra cost! The venue looks as if it has recently undergone some redecoration and has a fresh, light, clean feel to it. Very conveniently located for those who came by train and just a five minute walk from our meeting venue. If you are looking for a venue that has great customer service and is excellent value for money I would wholeheartedly recommend them. And although I cannot comment on the hotel side, as none of our party stayed there, from my experience of the restaurant I can imagine you'd have a very pleasant stay.

The GW has recently been refurbished and redecorated, but left little of its Great western heritage (i.e. railway) behind. A good range of beers, and a good selection of reasonably priced ciabattas plus other typically English items on the lunch menu. Disabled access is through the car park and then via a rather small wheelchair lift.

We had our wedding reception here on 4th October 2014 and it was amazing. The staff couldn't have been more helpful. We booked out the entire venue for 150+ people and the GW organised the disco (at cost), assisted with the decorating and clearing and provided a wedding coordinator for the night to ensure the event ran smooothly. We arranged and paid for a 10-13 item Buffett which was all cooked and prepared freshly on the night. There was an abundance of food provided and it we all delicious! Every guest commented on the quality and choice. We were able to decorate and arrange the venue as we desired (within reason) and had a raised area for cake cutting/speeches. The dance floor was a good size and we used the two function rooms for the food area and a kids play room.We ultised the in-house technology and had our photos showing on the screens. My husband and I stayed for two nights and friends stayed in the Saturday night. The bedrooms were of adequate standard, clean and comfortable (similar to a Travelodge). We had no issues with noise and the location is great as the GW is close to the train and bus station. Breakfast was good with a full English, teas/coffees and cereal. Nothing in the way of continental but perfectly fine to start the day. We ate and drank in the GW over the two days and found their prices to be very reasonable - £20 for bottle of prosseco. The food was ok too, your average burger, jacket potato, sandwich pub menu but at good value we felt.Thank you GW you will be our number one choice for any event in the future! Kerri & Dave

Stopped by here with my partner for a quick bite. The food was over priced and of very poor quality. To top things off got a £100 parking fine in their own car part for being "slightly over the indicated bay". The manager wanted none of it and told us to deal with the parking company, even though the GW own the car park! This place is a joke, and dont even dare think of using the car park with tiny spaces and £100 fines!

Another pub where all the staff give the impression that they're doing you some big favour by taking your money for a drink. And expensive drinks at that. The layout is pretty good but I've stopped going there after countless occasions of enduring unfriendly / borderline rude staff. You're better off in the Queen's Tap (next door).

Visited the GW after receiving a voucher from a Groupon deal. The offer included an overnight stay for two with dinner and breakfast for £32. To be honest I wasn't expecting much and first impressions did little to raise my expectations: the front step was covered in debris and the facade was shrouded in scaffolding! The hotel is quite large so I was surprised to find only one, quite young lad, working. He was very friendly, and was aware of the deal, but seemed a little confused as to how to check us in and where to send us. After trying to call someone on a mobile and searching for an elusive laptop he gave up, picked a key, seemingly at random, and left the bar to show us our room. On arrival it was obvious the room hadn't been cleaned so we hovered whilst he left to check which rooms were clean and then returned with another key. We were then moved to a slightly smaller, but still generously proportioned, room. This room was spotlessly clean but obviously in need of refurbishment. Fittings are dated and the old CRT TV crackled so much it was impossible to watch anything. We were also slightly concerned that none of the windows had locks - especially concerning considering the scaffolding made the room easily accessible to anyone with ill-intent. The provided evening meal was excellent. In fact I'd go so far as to say I'd have happily paid £32 for that alone. We were allowed to choose anything from the menu and also received a complimentary glass of house wine. The menu offered lots of options to try locally sourced produce which was especially pleasing. Likewise the breakfast the following morning was very good. On the whole I was happy with my visit, staff were lovely and though the room was a little tired the downstairs area was modern and comfortable. I would definitely re-visit - if only for the food! If the rooms were refurbished I think it would be an excellent place to stay and would happily reccommend to others.
