Tasty food and very affordable. Good place for a bite and a chat. It's quite close to Napier Uni.

I have eaten in Grukha many times, and it's always an amazing experience. I love the food and the service/attention in this restaurant. The staff is readily available if you have a question or want a recommendation. I ordered the mango chicken, and it was delicious. It is like having a perfect combination of a dessert and a main dish. It's simply perfect 👌. I have never had room for dessert, but I can imagine it should be delicious.

Unfortunately, this proved to be a very disappointing experience. Having ordered two starters, two mains, sides etc we were told approx fifteen minutes after ordering that one of the starters was no longer available. Having opted not to order an alternative, the other starter arrived immediately. It was cold. The mains (tikka bhuna and tikka masala) which arrived later also proved to be disappointing. Both tasted almost identcal, and certainely not as expected. The chicken was tough and the sauce unusually thick and almost sticky. The side orders did not arrive. When we queried their absence, it appeared that the waiter did not have enough English to understand our issue. Overall, a very disappointing experience.

Just had an absolutely delicious takeaway from here. One portion of vegetable tali and also vegetable pakora. There was more than enough for 2 of us, and included poppadoms, rice, and chapati. Clean restaurant and friendly service.

An incredible homely restaurant. The service is so fast and so amazing. We’ve been here for a first date and our anniversary and have never had a bad meal!! Atmosphere is relaxed and warm. Food is the best curry I have ever had. And for brilliant value!!

Went for dinner on a Saturday night. Most important point, we were seated on the lower level, by the window and it was absolutely freezing. There is a gap under the window so we had the outside air (below freezing temps) blowing right on to us. We asked to move and were told the other tables were "colder". We put our coats to eat our starters but were struggling. We asked again we were moved one table up and a small heater above the unused door was switched on. It made no difference. We noticed then that other customers were also wearing their coats. Starters: poppadoms, spice tray and vegetable pakora were excellent. Main course of vegetable thali was good, king prawn tikka masala was so sweet it was inedible. Really disappointed. Won't be back.

Was looking for an Indian restaurant in the area & was delighted to have stumbled across this gem. The staff were very friendly & the service very prompt. I had the chana puri & the tandoori fish. Both were absolutely delicious, the spice levels were spot on. When I'm back in Edinburgh, I will definitely return

The food was delicious and our host for the evening was delightful. If you've never had a beer from Nepal, be sure to have a gurkha beer. Wonderful evening.

Went for a meal tonight , thought we would try it as close to the dominion cinema , staff were nice but felt as though we were being watched as it is so small a place . No background music so was very quiet but maybe some people like this , could be doing with a bit of a revamp if im honest , service was a bit disjointed no plates on the table but food served, given plates but no cutlery. Asked for 1 lemonade got a lemonade and a diet coke . The food was pretty bland tbh not what we are used to maybe having a bad night but i dont think id return sorry

Up for the festival and dropped in here as we enjoyed our meal a few years back. Once again the service was v good with a great menu. We enjoyed all our starters and mains .. well presented and plenty of flavour Recommended

Went here tonight for the first time in years and it's every bit as good as I remember (I'm not an Edinburgh resident). Delicately spiced Nepalese dishes full of flavour. Really need to consider their choice of external colour but the food's superb! £66 for three including drinks.

Great food. Friendly staff. Reasonable prices. Need to fix the water leak somewhere that is making a musty smell ASAP.

The best Nepalese meal we have had . Service a bit slow but more than worth the wait - great vegetarian selection . Would highly recommend. Good value for money too.

Had lunch for three today ,absolutely fantastic food and service. Original and probably the best curry I've had in years simply delicious will definitely go back .

This lady was very upset over not getting to eat her meal due to the fact the lamb was severely “tough” which wasn’t surprising after being delivered after 10 minutes of calling. After phoning and putting a complaint in it was agreed the money would be refunded. She was shouted at by the manager as is too disabled to collect the money personally and was getting the delivery cost of the refund deducted also. She has waited at the reception of the hospital she is currently in for 2.5 hours waiting for her refund and got hung up on the phone when asking when it would be returned. Staff service appalling and wouldn’t advise anyone especially patients who spend a lot of their money to the restaurant. Very rude and disgusting service and take advantage of unwell and disabled pensioners.

Had their lunchtime meal. Good quality lamb and chicken, very tasty and very filling. Opted for medium spiciness, which had a subtle heat to it. Dessert was nothing exceptional (ice cream with fruit), but after the starter and main and for the price that's no big problem.

The food and service here are outstanding. The restaurant is much loved in the neighbourhood and is a good place to go for lunch or dinner when you want to have a private conversation.

Went for set menu weekday lunch. Menu was impressive with varied choice. Had the aloo pakora, onion bhaji starters and lamb biryani. Main was a good size portion for lunch and nicely spiced.

Came for dinner and the servers were very welcoming and helpful. Food was decent, we had some dishes that were ok, some others were very good. Portion sizes are very generous. We could’ve easily had one starter between two.

A great little restaurant in Morningside on the main road ok decor may be needs an upgrade but the food is great. Wonderful spicy sheek kebab we ask for extra spicy made fresh also the chicken main course Devine and generous portion. Tarka Daal lovely consistency . The owner works in the kitchen along with several other chefs service provided by three lovely regular staff who always welcome guests with a smile. That's why I keep going back

The 8.95 momo lunch is out of this world; creamy, spicy sauce to dip in the (generous portion of) steamy, made-to-order dumplings. Washed back with a Gurkha beer, close to heaven!

This lovely unpretentious restaurant is in the heart of Morningside on the main drag. The owner is head chef along with a team of lovely chefs. Just ask if you want it spicy milder or perhaps chicken or prawns they are exceptionally accommodating. The restaurant and decor isn’t posh but tables presented clean lovely fresh laundered linen napkins with a little vase of fresh flowers and candle. I love the homemade vegetable samosas which he now cooks with extra spice and lovely thin pastry gorgeous. Main course cannot not have the targa daal fresh hot generous portion which is usually shared. The main course chicken dish number 52 if you like spice tender chicken I swear you won’t be dissapointed .the boiled rice fluffy fresh not solid stuck to the dish Wine list not overly extensive I have either muscadet or Chardonnay hoping one day they might get some reasonable Sauvignon in at a reasonable price but either of these wines if you like white dry are ok and price is not too bad . Would I recommend without question well worth a visit

Worst place ever!!! Stinking of damp! Manager was very rude loud and not very welcoming! The food was disgusting 🤮 I felt awful after it ! It was like a ready made jar ! Never eat here! The waitresses were very nice and polite I must say but the manager was very loud and kept on talking about delivering a baby she never shut up! Worst response ever!! Waste of money !

Beware do not go to this restaurant it’s disgusting not just the awful tasting food also the rude owner which was very loud and rude and when we said the food was not nice she turned round to say to the other member of staff “ they think that we will give them the found for free! “ disgusting attitude and the curry was the worse I have ever tasted in my life, tasted like a ready made jar you would get at a supermarket ( the cheapest market brand!) Don’t eat there!!!

Bought a takeaway in June and explored the menu and ordered lots of different things, and I’m so glad we did. The food was lovely and the people were friendly too. The mushroom puri was my wife’s favourite- the bread was sweet and perfect against the rich tomato based sauce. I loved the lamb swadilo which was creamy and rich with tender pieces of lamb. The keema Nan was perfect and was great to mop up the leftover sauces. Highly recommend.

I don't want to give it a bad rating as I cannot fault the food and serving staff who were attentive and lovely. I would have given 5 stars for their food and service. However, the place has a smell of damp and the toilets although clean smell like the pipes are rotted with urea leaking through. Needs totally revamped and a significant amount of money spent on the place to bring it up to a reasonable standard. The owner we presumed who was there during our visit talked loudly about her friend who vomited in her sink whilst we were eating our dinner and spoke loudly during our whole meal. Looks like it's easy to determine the root of the problem. Stick to Deliveroo with this one I wish we did!

This restaurant definitely has the potential to grow and deliver a great cuisine to life. The tables are clean, the atmosphere is calm and the food is on time. I'm giving it 3 stars because the food was okay, the portions were unbalanced and the menu has too many items to choose from. I would recommend this restaurant to reduce the menu size and perfect the meals it decides to focus on. For example, the lunch menu is a good starting point to taste their dishes without getting lost across the full menu. Overall, I think you can try this place and taste some nice local dishes but there is room for improvement.

What an incredible deal! 3-course lunch for £8. We greatly enjoyed the onion bhaji - chock full of veggies and spices - and loved the naan that came with the curry. The naan was beautifully flaky yet still soft. The curry itself could have used a little more salt (easy fix with salt on the table) but there was such a great variety of vegetables, each cooked well, in the curry. And to get a scoop of ice cream at the end was such a delight.

My 2 stars go to the waiter and the waitress; who served us very well. I used to live in Jordan Lane next door to this Gurkha restaurant and we ate there so many times because the food was simply succulent!! After my dinner tonight I'm afraid I will never ate there ever! We choose as a starter some onion bahjis and vegetable pakoras:How can the chef make them so dry and they both tasted the same; one with onions the others with peas! For main course I've picked up some tandoori King prawns with a sauce which came separately.That "tomato" sauce was so diluted, it tasted nothing like a Nepalese flavoured sauce. I was SO disappointed in that meal, as I was so looking forward to dine there like the old times. Please bring back a good chef who can cook Nepalese food the way you used to feast us for many years!!

We were looking for some late dinner....after walking around local area for a while we came past this restaurant....and very happy we did. Great friendly service and delicious food.. .highly recommend

Was excited to find a place with biryani on the menu near my accommodation and even more excited with all the good reviews. Staff was very friendly and pickles for papadum superb, but other than that food was quite bland. Portion sizes are huge, but I’d rather eat a bit less but better tasting food.

We go to Gurkha Bar and restaurants regularly as it servers very tasty food. Sometimes I do takeaways from there as well. Staffs are friendly and polite, nice venue.

The food was very authentic and delicious. The staff were friendly and just down to earth people. You can tell this is an honest and passionate family business where the owners are proud of their culture. If anyone reading wants to try Nepalise food, give this place a try, I'm sure you won't regret it if you like food with plenty of flavour and spices!

wow, this place is quite possibly edinburgh's best kept secret, went for the lunch menu- best £7.95 ive ever spent! The man serving us was single handedly doing everything all with a mile on his face, could not reccommend enough! me and my friend shared the lamb curry and chicken pakora - both delicious and generous portions, would also recommend the aloo pakora. 10/10 will be going back!!!

We absolutely loved the food. It’s such a simple and calm place and the owner/whoever attended us is so welcoming. We went for lunch. They have a set menu. We ordered momos which were so delicious and had such a unique taste. We also ordered the same for takeaway. For another dish we ordered traditional gurkha lamb curry and nan. It tasted amazing. Much different from Indian curry so for us it was a change of taste after long. My husband and I will definitely recommend this place to our friends who are traveling to Edinburgh!

It was our first time here and we loved it. It’s not the fanciest place but the food was tasty and plentiful. Our meals were all very different with different levels of spice. The service was lovely with great advice about the menu. My husband and both really enjoyed the Gurkha beer too. Immaculate table linens too which is always brave in a place that serves spicy food. The place is local to us and is now on the favourite list. Thanks for a great meal.

I’ve been there once but I really enjoyed the food and was pleased to know that all meat is halal. Staff are very friendly and food is delicious. I really enjoyed the 3 courses meal in the afternoon which is at a fantastic price of only £8. A happy customer and of course will be back.

Trying The Gurkha for a lockdown takeaway curry for the first time in many, many years, I found it generally a bit disappointing. The portion sizes were huge. I felt they could have reduced the quantity and improved the quality to hit the same price-point and would have had a happier customer.

Simple and unassuming. Light and airy. Menu limited, but ample, tasty, and very reasonable. Good service and the menu recommendations suited well. Excellent lunch. Will return to explore further when restrictions lift.

Fantastic Momo lunch for a great price. Absolutely recommend to anybody in the neighbourhood. It's easy to walk past but walk on in and you won't be disappointed!

The menu is wonderful & full of choice, even offering family/party size dishes such as roast chicken or a lamb leg. If in search of a spot to grab a delightful snack or indeed you wish to indulge the senses upon fragrant culinary aromas & flavours, this is a great wee resting spot. Portions are plentiful and sauces delectable. When next in search of a mini food coma and near morningside, do swing by. Ye shan't regret it.

Fui a la hora del almuerzo. Durante la crisis del covid. El dueño era amable y servicial y, lo más importante, la comida estaba recién preparada y estaba buenísima. La decoración es gastada, los asientos no son los más nuevos, pero esto es nepalés en el verdadero sentido de la experiencia. Honestamente, ¡la relación calidad-precio en el menú fijo y el personal amable significan que estaba feliz! Definitivamente regresaría.

Went at lunch time, staff went out their way to be helpful. Had the momo lunch and lamb curry lunch. Brilliant price, very filling and ever so tasty. Felt safe during covid too.

Quick lunch with a mate - excellent lamb dish (£5.95 including freshly baked nan) and the chef who was also front of house, was extremely welcoming and friendly. Based on this experience, I would definitely return.

There are other Nepali restaurants near Old Town but they all have nothing that is close to authentic Nepali food and are stupidly expensive. Gurkha Restaurant is miles better than them in terms of delivering Nepali taste at a reasonable price. The restaurant has good seating and the staff are super friendly. Definitely recommend and I will go there often as well!

Sí, esta fue una experiencia muy decepcionante por cuatro razones.En primer lugar, la bienvenida de la camarera era inexistente. Sin sonrisa, sin chat, sin calidez. Solo 'siéntate aquí'. Ella estaba miserable y harta, luciendo horrible.En segundo lugar, los menús adhesivos eran demasiado largos. Todos los platos enumerados seguramente no fueron necesarios. Un menú limpio de la mitad de esa longitud hubiera estado bien. Además, siempre me gusta ver si un plato es suave, mediano o caliente. Muy bien, se describieron algunos platos, pero la mayoría no. Un poco de consistencia aquí sería bueno. No profesional.En tercer lugar, mi compañero de comedor pidió agua. La sombría camarera le trajo un pequeño vaso de agua. Ella no me trajo un vaso. Ella no trajo una jarra de agua helada y dos vasos. Ella no trajo una sonrisa. La mayoría de los lugares proporcionan agua sin tener que ser solicitada. Muy pobre.Y en cuarto lugar, la comida era sosa y poco interesante. Cosas indias genéricas que obtienes en todas partes. Sin carácter, interés o singularidad. Simplemente aburrido, aburrido, aburrido.Entonces no volveremos. Una camarera que no quería estar allí, menús en mal estado, servicio de mesa podrido y comida aburrida.¡Adiós, Gurkha!

Cuatro de nosotros pedimos una comida para llevar a la hora del almuerzo para ahorrar para la noche después de asistir a un concierto que terminó bastante tarde. Pedimos 2 entrantes mixtos de pakora, 1 pollo kahari, 1 cordero kahari, 2 curry de verduras, 6 chapattis y 1 nann simple. El precio fue de 75. 00! La comida para llevar más cara de la historia. Los vegetales al curry eran terribles. Inetables Entraron en la papelera. Consistían en una lata de vegetales mixtos (un montón de zanahorias y guisantes picados) y un par de papas poco cocidas. Los de carne estaban bien. Realmente nos sentimos estafados. Nunca te lleves comida para llevar desde allí.

I wasn’t going to write this review publicly on TA instead writing to them privately on messenger and hand delivered letter. But as they didn’t have the courtesy to reply to either I am now leaving this here as a reviewWe had been quite regular customers at the Gurkha and have always recommended it to people in the area. My sister was visiting and we decided to take her. She is blind and has a guide dog. When we arrived the young waiter met us at the door he told us they didn’t allow “pets”. We explained it wasn’t a pet but a working dog that my sister needed to get around. He told us that didn’t matter and she wasn’t allowed in with itBy this stage all the diners eyes were on us which was a fairly humiliating situation to be in. We explained it was illegal to ban access to a working dog (who because of her training is exceptionally behaved )He disappeared and came back and said “five minutes for table “. No word of an apology. By this stage it was clear we would not really be welcome to stay and my sister was already feeling very uncomfortable at the situationNeedless to say we were also embarrassed for her and this does not shed The Gurkha in good light at all. They need to know (and to train their staff ) that it is illegal to deny access to a working dog. And the rudeness wasn’t great either We have never faced this in other bars or cafes or restaurants in EdinburghThoroughly disappointing

Well, while the service and the staff are wonderful, I'd say that when it comes to food ,they have a lot to more to improve. Probably a bit more interest in preparing the dishes will come a long way.

We eat here regularly now we have discovered it. Love the pristine tablecloths and napkins. Great food every time, attentive staff and reasonably priced.

Recently moved into the area and found this gem of a restaurant. Friendly attentive staff but more important excellent food. Try the Nepalese lager to accompany your curry!
