The Guide Dog in Southampton

Great little local pub, it's kind of a hidden gem for people who aren't local. It is clean and runs very well. I do not go in a lot but as pubs go one of the better ones I've ever been in.

Lovely pub! Great selection of real ales, staff friendly and helpful, and curry night on Wednesday evenings (although Ihaven't tried it). Top notch pub!

We go there on a Wednesday for the wonderful Massaman curry, check it's being cooked that night though, sells out fast. Very traditional English pub, only serves food on Wednesdays

Wonderful pub tucked away in a residential area. Great range of beers, the Goodens Gold and Dark Star APA were particularly good. Will be making the journey from Lee on Solent again to here.

A super traditional boozer located amongst 19th century working class terraces ..cosy , friendly and simply a cut above the chain run sterile cathedrals to profit ...a fast disappearing jewel of social interaction highly recommended.

Excellent local pub with a very old fashioned pub vibe. Went on a Thursday for an event and the pub were doing Thai curry. Really tasty and so fresh and clean! Great friendly service and very busy - a good sign! I think they do food once a week at least, it’s not every night.

I don't know if they serve food here. We were there for a 60th birthday in the back room. I was somewhat dubious about the location, Bevois Valley. Parking in the narrow, residential streets, with restricted parking (2 hours except for residents), is difficult but not impossible. However, once inside - how I wish I lived within walking distance as I would be in there every night! A charming, somewhat old-fashioned boozer with a specials board for ales - where else do you see that? - was a true gem. The staff were friendly, always a plus. There was a mix of customers: old, young, all enjoying a drink with nobody language or arguments.

Was looking for a pub to get blind drunk in & going by the name this is the one.

Excellent pub with a cracking range of ales. About 20 mins walk to the football ground so convenient if you want to avoid the idiots in town

Excellent Southampton pub about 20 minutes walk from St Mary's Stadium. Nine cask beers on handpump when I last visited including a porter. A few tables outside some of them covered. Not too busy before the Spurs game.

Very pleasant atmosphere when I visited yesterday - even the coffee came in cafetieres! Great barman who was working, felt right at home in the doghouse in the back room :) A+++

Wonderful local pub, which I can really respect as they often stock a lot of locally brewed beers and always seem to have a good selection. Absolutely love the back room, which was decorated a vibrant orange but looks really sweet when the fairy lights come on. Will definitely be visiting again and hopefully be able to try their Thai curries. That’s if there is a suitable vegetarian option.

Lovely little pub, first visit, has some outside space where we sat and relaxed after a 3 hour plus drive down to Southampton in some heavy traffic. Only downside we found was they only do food on a Wednesday, pitty we were there on a friday.

Good local beer well priced a bit quieter than it used to be quite friendly no cash payments may put up some off not so many real ales as used to have no larger but the place is still a good local you can pay in cash now pub still ok there is lager now

One of the worst lardlords in Southampton and worst pubs The landlord or manager Gary is one of the rudest unwelcoming and unfriendly staff members Not only does he drink on shift (saw him drink at least 3 pints) he also has horrendous hospitality towards paying customers I would recommend any other pub in Southampton and one that has a wider range of ales and beers that don’t just cater for men over 50 Go to beards and boards less than a 10 minute walk, brewdog or the hobbit if you actually want to be in a place where you aren’t judged shouted at and treated like it’s a chore that you have walked in appalling and I now understand why your loosing so much custom If there were 0 stars you would get that

This is a wonderful pub. They have an excellent selection of real ales on tap. Staff are friendly. Table service is good. Well worth a visit if you are in Southampton

A great selection of beers etc, but would be nice to have some non alcoholic choices too, theres still plenty of money to be made from these types of drinks and there are some great choices now. Please consider expanding your fridge stock!

One of the few pubs that sells Goodens Gold, one of the best ales on earth.

Proper pub no music good very reasonable prices called in before Saints game with Newcastle place was packed but rapid service because they had plenty of staff on.

This is a lovely, popular pub, chock full of delightful punters and great service. But, like a few other 'real ale' pubs round here they persist in serving almost entirely Pale ales. No, Ruby's, Amber's, Milds etc it's winter, I don't really want to drink hoppy, citrusy drinks. They all seem to think that this blind obedience to pale ale is satisfactorily offset with Porter. It isn't.

Fantastic atmosphere although the back room can get a little noisy if there is a group of enthusiastic people in there. The selection of real ales is very good and the beer is well kept. The landlord is very knowledgeable and obviously takes great pride in his beer keeping.

This is a little gem of a find! Brilliant atmosphere -very welcoming to humans as well as dogs! It is a real Ale pub and the one I had was wonderful. Give it a go and see for yourself :-)

This is quite simply the pub Southampton has been missing for 30 years. It's friendly, well run and has the finest beer in the city at reasonable if not outright cheap prices. Walk in the door and you'll remember what pubs used to be like!

The Guide Dog is the best pub in Southampton. The beers are flawless and the staff are lovely esp brilliant landlord Gary. It is the kind of local that you can wander into when you are on your own and always find someone interesting to talk to. It hosts music clubs in a little back room. And for smokers, it hss good covered outside seating. The pub does Thai Curry on Thurs nights - you have to book....

Found The Guide Dog via the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for a free late afternoon/early evening during a conference this month. It provided everything I was hoping for: quiet conviviality, beautifully-kept local ales and an owner both welcoming and knowledgeable. This place is a labour of love: the fruit of dedication, inspiration, and hard work. Thoroughly enjoyed my three hours there, and would recommend the Guide Dog to anyone.

Very nice and welcoming pub where there is no background music and conversation is at the center of everything together with the wide choice of beers. On Friday evening there is a lottery where you can win meat.
