The Galleon Fish & Chips in Conwy

Terrible service from staff who are rude and can't be bothered. The cheeseburger was dry and disgusting and the fish was decent at best! You have to buy fish for 6.75 and chips for 3.65 separately and even pay extra 20p for some cheap poor quality ketchup! This place is a massive tourist trap with poor quality overpriced food and rude service! Honestly, Conwy would be better off without this business!

Disappointed with our fish and chips, the fish portion consisted of a very small piece of cod embedded in a large slab of batter, may just have been unlucky with this visit but based on my first visit would not return again

After visiting Conwy for many years and enjoying the service provided by The Galleon. After a recent trip we we're very disappointed that they no longer offer table service in their restaurant. It's merely a seating area. You have to order your food at the takeaway and then carry it upstairs to eat at a table! You've definitely not improved the experience. We used to enjoy the service in the restaurant with friendly staff offering fish and chips (on a plate!). Pot of tea and bread and butter too. Unfortunately not anymore as The Galleon is merely a glorified chippy. What a shame something so good has turned so bad overnight. It used to be packed in there too but on our recent visit it was empty!! Surprise Surprise!!

Absolutely loved the Cod Fish & Chips. It was some of the best we've had. Flaky, moist, nice. Chips were good as well.

Poor. Service at counter & you pick up in cardboard box & bring to your table yourself. Ketchup sachets 20p each. Ordered plaice. Frozen & in breadcrumbs - not fully cooked when served - cold in middle. Avoid.

Lady front of counter polite & clear. Had the plaice - ‘cooked’ from frozen in breadcrumbs - not cooked in middle, cold, barely any fish. Chips good. Left meal & left premises never to return.

1st time visiting this chippie under the new owners. No table service anymore and just wooden cutlery. Basically self service, fish was nice but also smaller than it used to be. Shame as I used to love the Galleon.

Our experience at this restaurant was profoundly disappointing and frustrating. Despite the upper floor being entirely vacant, we were denied the opportunity to sit there with our dog, citing seemingly arbitrary restrictions and displaying zero flexibility. We were forced to accept a table downstairs, where another issue arose: despite there being an available table, we were prohibited from bringing down additional chairs to accommodate our party of four. The staff's attitude was more than unpleasant; their lack of empathy and consideration for our situation was palpable. The 20-minute wait felt like an eternity, as we observed other customers being served more promptly and courteously. We felt treated with disdain, as if our presence and needs were inconsequential. Ultimately, exhausted and disheartened by the unprofessional management and rude demeanor of the staff, we chose to leave. It's regrettable that an establishment supposed to provide hospitality and customer service opted to leave such a negative and lasting impression.

Surprised by the recent reviews, always been spot on. We called in today and what a lovely lunch. Staff were super friendly. Ordered our lunch and collected as no table service which I understand in October. Fish, chips and mushy peas, cooked fresh and absolutely fantastic. Lovely white fish with a non greasy batter. We absolutely love this place.

Ordered 2 portions fish and chips. Gone to the marina to eat it but one portion had half and broken fish in it... It was to far to go and complain. Also cans £1.75 each noticed after paying. To much. £28 total. 2 fish&chips, 2 large curry sauces 2 cans. Tasted ok. But disapointing. Open the boxes before colecting and check as you paying first there. It was bussy probably they lost it...or cat had my half

Stopped here on a trip to Conway Castle. Was super busy but the staff were accommodating and friendly. Service not the tickets and the prices aren’t cheap. 40p for sauce packs is kind of ridiculous for Jen everyone else is giving them away for free. Also no cleaning staff means the bins get overflowed and tables are constantly dirty.

Great chip shop in Conway! We enjoyed our chips, they're also vegetarian friendly frying the chips separately which is ace. Would highly recommend to any vegetarians in the area.

Me and my mum came here for lunch and the food and service was exceptional! Highly recommended!

I haven't been here for many years, it's probably had numerous owners since. It used to be quite a smart fish restaurant with cutlery, nice crockery, pots of tea and the like, on the corner of the High Street with a great view of the Castle. It still has a great view of the the Castle. Now you have to order at the cash desk, wait to be called and carry it to your table. It's presented in pressed cardboard boxes, accompanied by wooden knives and forks. Salt and vinegar are free, any other condiments are 40p a sachet. That's 8 shillings in real money! So how was the food? The chips were flabby - cooked through but with not a hint of crispness. Why? Oil temperature too low. The fish was cooked, and tasteless. The worst part was the batter. Perfect for the grease afficionado. Under the greasy outside was a layer of creamy uncooked batter. Reason? Too short a time in the oil. Good value? Cod and chips x2, a can of drink and a bottle of water was £23.65. You decide. The best part of our visit was that we were allowed to leave our suitcases downstairs. My recommendation - go anywhere else

Awful customer service. They couldn't even be bothered to make eye contact when asking what you wanted to order. All the staff looked like they didn't want to be there and certainly didn't want to be helping anyone. Rubbish

Good fish and chips, nice clean place. We dinned inside, plenty of room upstairs. Even though everthing was clean there was some pealing paint on the ceiling and the taps were not working properly in the mens toilets. Come on guys these are easy fixes.

Used to be a fabulous place to eat fish and chips . Deteriorated massively . Served in card board boxes containing unappetising meal . Also prices have rocketed . Sad decline .

Been coming here for years every time we’re in Conwy, we’ve tried visiting 3x in the past week and it’s been closed every time, we tried at 5 and 6pm and all 3 times ended up at a different chippy as it was closed. No indication of this on google maps and no reasoning why, is it fully closed temporarily? does it close really early?? So disappointed because i usually love this chippy.

Food was great but we got 2 cod, large chips and a tub of gravy for 2 people and it was over £20, quite small portions.

Ordered two fish and chips to eat in, served in a take-away tray but saves on washing up I suppose. Also had a tub of peas. I thought the fish and chips were delicious but fresh ones always are. That said they also had a great flavour as well as crispy batter and proper spud flavour to the chips. The peas were not to my liking, too sweet but my girlfriend loved them, each to their own. We had to put our waste in the bin on the way out, more McD than a proper chippy in that respect (I refuse to eat at McD on principle).

Rude staff. Stupid system for dealing with orders: we ordered our meal but at least 4 newer orders were met before ours arrived. Fish was dry (I don’t think it was cod even though that is what we asked for). Chips were OK.

Poor service, overpriced and very small portions. Give this one a miss. The menu is limited and if you ask for anything mini then you get micro portions.

A bit underwhelmed to be honest. Not big portions, chips pale and tasteless, fish batter crispy but not much fish inside. Maybe we went on a bad day, but don't think I will pop in again anytime soon.

The worst chips I've had in my life, no exaggeration. White, tasteless, undercooked, stodgy and a disgrace - they don't taste like chips, they don't even taste like potato. Bought today (23/8/23) and I am so angry and disappointed with the disgusting standard that I'm doing a review while on holiday. Clearly aimed at tourists who have no clue and who will never be back but nonetheless awful in every way. Chucked the whole lot in the bin right in front of the smallest house in Britain. Conwy you need to do better.

Chips were nice. No table service you just pay and sit down if you wish to dine in. Portion sizes were on the small side however food was nice.

Since the new owners took over a couple of years ago, there’s no doubt that things are not quite as great as they used to be under the previous owners. You can eat in but there’s no table service, you simply pick up your order in takeaway packaging and find a table to eat it at. Having said that, we did find the fish and chips very tasty - not quite as good as they used be previously but still perfectly acceptable.

Dropped in on a busy afternoon after spending the morning and early afternoon exploring Conway Castle. Wasn’t disappointed with the speed or quality of the food. Would definitely recommend. The 20p cost for a packet of sauce is a bit steep is the only criticisms.

This fish and chips is just gorgeous, we travel from Hawarden to have a walk and pick up fish and chips to eat on the front . Delicious, best chip shop ever !!!!!! The pease and curry sauce also amazing. Staff alway ls pleasant .

Terrible FROZEN fish with way too much breading. Do NOT waste your money. I took the fish back when I realized that it was not cooked and the manager wanted to argue with me. What sort of fish and chips establishment on the coast used frozen fish???

Service pretty slow this could be down to high season purchased fish and chips and a cheeseburger. cheese burger was mushy with burnt edges seemed more like a tinned hamburger. Fish was awful was thin and rubbery think this might have been the tail end.What you pay you expect good quality food this is not the case.

Charge of 15p for a small bag to take your food away in and for my purchase I would have needed 2 bags. Crazy when you dont get charged anymore to eat in. Food ok service from the young lads very good.

Got a small fish and chips: sadly the chips were really pale and not cooked enough. The fish was ok, also a bit undercooked and they put a large amount of salt on it, so it was difficult to eat. They had a sign outside saying "probably the finest fish and chips you've ever tasted" so I thought it would be really good, and it was the opposite unfortunately...

you know when you recommend a place and you're nervous about it living up to expectations... well i brought a northerner and an american here and we were all silent as we devoured the flaky fish, crispy but fluffy batter, and beautiful - and generously portioned - chips! so good! you order at the counter btw! staff were lovely!

Completely average! The chips were awful and the scampi were really average! Most of the chips went in the bin so not worth the higher price. We have had far better fish and chips inland and it's cheaper! Definitely wouldn't recommend as a place!

Sadly my experience was very disappointing. Young lad behind the counter was quite rude to the customers in front of us and obviously not enjoying his job at all. The food was very poor too sadly. All our pieces of fish were overcooked and burnt. How they had the cheek to serve this rubbish I really don't know! My husband tried to cut into his and it shattered everywhere! I didn't bother to try to eat mine and my daughters were the same, they just pushed it around in disbelief. Unfortunately, an expensive inedible experience and we won't be back. How they are still open if this is what they serve is beyond me.

One person had plaice it was like a piece of breaded cardboard and the batter on fish was not good . I think a change of cooking oil is also needed !!

We didn’t have a good experience here unfortunately. Staff were rude and unhelpful. Missed an item off our order and turned her nose up when I asked to have the fish and chips separately. Very grumpy. I also asked another lady for a cloth so I could wipe the table we were sitting at down as it was dirty and I was Clearly ignored once and the second time I asked the lady looked at me like I was the biggest inconvenience to her. Waited a little while for the food but that wasn’t too much of a problem. Food was okay- chips were a little undercooked but was just so disappointed with the service, we wont be back. Plenty of other nice chippies around with better customer service. no plates or cutlery available for dining in except for 15p for a wooden fork.

Very disappointed, we came here years ago, but moved out of the area, so we thought we would return, but how disappointed no table service take away service & the food was disappointing most went in the bin. This chip shop had a very good reputation? Want be returning.

There was no table service .you had to buy a takeaway but you could eat it in .I had fish and chips and so did my husband .my fish was half the size of my husbands it looked as though the other half fell off,it was supposed to be cod but it didn't look or taste like cod and so greasy and as for the chips it was all the bitty chips .my husband went to complain and there attitude stunk won't be going there again ,we've always gone there but it's gone down hill

Really tasty and fresh fish and chips, but we had to wait a ridiculously long time for our order (20-25 minutes before it was finally ready) and secondly, just as they were 'dishing' ours up, they were running very low on chips, so we basically got the final dregs - barely a handful each, which was really annoying. Having stood for over 20 minutes waiting, I couldn't be bothered to wait any longer so put up and shut up.

The food is delicious! Some of the best fish and chips I've had in the UK. The service was mediocre. Very unhelpful staff. An easy walk from the castle. Overall, it's definitely worth popping in to eat! Note: it was a Friday afternoon and very busy, so the service might have just been due to that. It's more of a 4.5 rating.

Average fish and chips. Lads on the counter were pretty useless. Bought two fish and chips with curry sauce and two cups of tea: £26. Then had to pay 30p for a sachet of ketchup. Piss-take. My sons fish was twice the size of mine. Worst part was having to use the tiny wooden fork to eat with. Almost impossible to do without destroying the fish. The tea came in the smallest paper cups I've ever seen, at 2.20 a pop. Total rip-off, that. All in all a bit of a waste of money. Lesson learned.Will never go back.

Lovely fish and chips! You can tell it was fresh. Great taste of fish and brilliant chips that goes with it! It was only take away service at the time but you could eat inside regardlessly. Friendly staff and very nice and clean inside. Prices in this place are very fair and for family of four we have spent something around £34 which is quite cheap if you ask me. Highly recommended! And we will definitely be back in here if we are in Conway next time 👍😁

Popped in today for a bite. Cooked fresh and was really delicious, not had chips that nice for a while. Clean restaurant and a friendly service. Will definitely pop back when we come back through.

Excellent food. Had fish and chips with my wife ,sat in with our dog. The fish tasted Excellent with hardly any grease. The staff were lovely people and I would recommend for anybody to go.

We came for fish and chips here on the 24th of September 2022, I must say the fish and chips are the finest in this part of Wales, the chips were so lovely and crispy and really soft inside and the fish tasted amazing along with the beautifully crispy batter. I highly recommend it to anybody to try this fish shop because I am sure they will not be disappointed. What a shame we don’t have them up in Bradford Yorkshire. Where I come from. Fabulous food, excellent service and the staff so wonderful helpful and friendly

Got to say that these are some of the best fish and chips we've ever had! Spent a fortune in here last week while on a week's holiday. Worth every penny! Their cod is flaky in a wonderful crispy batter, the chips are hot, crispy and dry (not the wet soggy chips some chippies offer) and the gravy is gorgeous! Can't wait to visit again soon. Thank you for great service too. The staff are just lovely and work very hard.

Was a first class chippie.but now it's a place to avoid ..they no longer have table service..you have to carry your food up the stairs yourself then go all the way down again for your drinks .. everything is served in polystyrene & drinks in paper cups .very poor wooden forks is your cutlery..you could do better going to a van..food from the previous customers all over the floor...& The food is the poorest of quality ..the batter on the fish is like very soggy paper..I'm sure this place depends on the day trippers because they would never get repeat business ..avoid

During a day trip to conwy with my daughter and her friend we decided to get some fish and chips to take down to the harbour for dinner. I asked the girls what they wanted without looking at the menu so you can imagine my shock when i was asked for £25 for 2 x fish and chips , 1 x chips and three cans of pop. I then glanced at the menu and to my amazement fish and chips was £7.90. Even at this extortionate price it didn't add up to £25 so on checking my receipt I found I had been charged for too many drinks and over a pound for a couple of sachets of ketchup. I asked for the bill to be amended as we waited but after several failed attempts of putting the money back on the card I told them to forget it. We eventually recieved our food and walked down to the harbour to sit in the sun as we ate. I passed the girls their food, they opened them immediately and both turned them to me , they had forgotten to put the fish in. I then had to walk back to the shop, leaving my own food which was going cold , so they could put the fish in with the meal. We then finally sat to eat our food. The food itself was the driest, tasteless example of fish and chips I've ever experienced, the only saving grace was the fact the portions were so small there wasn't alot to get through . Utterly disappointed and when in conwy next time will not be buying anything from this shop .

Great chips - not greasy and really tasty. Bit of a wait if you go during a busy period around lunch especially on a weekend but it is to be expected. The fish is quite expensive in my opinion - £8ish for a fish and chips is a bit steep in my opinion.

Chips were nice and plenty of meat on the fish. The peas were bland and the batter on the fish was tasteless. Overpriced and lacking in flavour. Shame as this used to be a great chippy before covid.

The business must have changed hands fairly recently. What was a lovely cafe with table service is now a fish & chip shop with space to sit down. Food and drink all served in cardboard and not the treat it used to be. Knives to cut up fish don't exist. A wooden fork is 15p. On the plus side the counter staff were friendly, but we'll find an alternative place to eat at in future.

I’m giving this a 3 star to vent, the food was great last time we had it, but, it’s never open, says it’s open online and take everyone’s orders drive into Conwy and shut! Very disappointing! You are missing a trick! It’s high season!! Always the same too! Update your god darn opening times online!!

This is not a cafe - it's a fish & chip shop, so whilst the food looks good, the staff are friendly and polite, and the seating is clean and comfortable with a superb location - avoid the coffee at all costs. You'll get a cup of cheap Nescafe in a paper cup, a plastic pot of milk and a sugar sachet. To be fair, the young man did let me add another spoon of coffee to the try and liven it up, but if you're looking for somewhere to have a coffee, go somewhere else.

Really polite staff, great customer service. Plus fantastic fish and chips. Great fish in a light batter. My only complaint is that we try to ration our number of take outs, but we are going to have to go back before the end of our holiday. A real treat.

Very disappointed had haddock it was breaded not battered and looked a frozen one deep fried they do not specify this. Also stingy portion of chips and curry sauce and the coffee was like dishwater. A Shame as it was very nice on my last visit it can't be down to covid! Will not be returning.

Travelled from Chester on a very wet Oct afternoon to visit Conwy. We were very hungry and decided to stop here at the Galleon for Fish and Chips. It’s been a long time since we have eaten that type of meal. We ate in to avoid the weather. All we can say is that the Fish and Chips were the nicest we have ever eaten. Piping hot. Good portion and the batter was so tasty. The whole experience was helped by amazing friendly staff. Well worth the journey. I wouldn’t hesitate to go there again. In fact it’s on our return list for the spring. Thanks for a lovely meal and a very positive experience.

GREAT STAFF I went there and there was a lovely ginger boy who was very charming, but it smelt of chips…. 0/10 for food 10/10 for ginger charm ;)

If I could give this half a star I would. We came to conwy for the day on the 23rd & we were really looking forward to some nice fish & chips as a treat after a long walk around and we hadn't had nothing to eat yet. Lots of people queuing outside here every time we walked past, so we thought it must be good if people are all queuing & the other chip shops were quiet. So we queued, ordered & waited for our order number to be called.... 45minutes later for a small cod, kids chips & a fish cake. We walked down to the front to find somewhere to sit, opened up the boxes & the fish cake was a tiny round breaded fish cake like you would give your kids from by birdseye. This should be advertised to tell customers this, as i've never been in a chippy that sells freezer bought fish cakes. There was nothing fresh or tasty about it at all. The fish was watery, unseasoned & tasteless & the chips tasted like the fat hadn't been changed for weeks. Both myself and my partner said it was the worst fish and chips we've ever tried and it all went in the bin. I ended up being sick after too. We also asked a couple about theirs, who also queued at the same time as us & they said they through theirs away too as it was disgusting.

One of the nicest fish and chips I've had. Service with a smile, waited for fish to be cooked and chips were delicious. Did our homework before going to Conway and the reviews were good, got to say they did not disapoint. Very good value for money and the harbour front is a 1 minute walk away with benches. Watch the seagulls, they'll drive bomb you for these tasty chips 😉

Mouthwatering local chippy with a range of daily catch (cod, haddock and salmon). Patience in the long queue pays off as me and my 3-year old enjoyed every little bit of our meal. Thank you!

What can i say? These were honestly the nicest fish and chips i have ever eaten, i was not disappointed. Me and my boyfriend are big on fish and chips and i must say there was no crumbs left afterwards. After the coming to Conwy on the sight seeing bus and going on a boat ride from the harbour it was exactly what we needed. The price was fair, however i would of happily paid more. Delicious, i would recommend this place to anyone.
