No food. Just drinks and metal. Plenty of it. Great atmosphere. Love it every time I come here.

Really great beer (beer festival weekend mind), great atmosphere, good music, great staff. Bit chilly. Also much love for cats. Fab really.

The best rock bar I've found in this city

Travelled down to Brizzol to tie up some loose ends and had two AMAZING evenings here. Staff are top banana, put up with my shit and even took me on a great night out after closing. If you don’t go here, you have issues. Thank you so much, guys!!

I've been here quite a few times now, and have enjoyed it each time. I'm often going to see some form of metal or rock at the O2 and it's always nice to have a pint or two beforehand. They have plenty of choice when it comes to drinks, all at reasonable value and all can be enjoyed to the soundtrack of metal :-). Service was good and they do their best for a quick turnaround. Yes, it's small, but it's still perfectly enjoyable. As you'd expect, Fridays and Saturdays are the busiest. I once came her in a Powerwolf t shirt and within about 10 minutes Powerwolf was playing on the speakers. Whether that was by chance or someone put it on for me I don't know, but I appreciated it either way!

I've been drinking in the grphon now for over a decade. Hands down the best metal and real ale pub in the south west. Everyone is welcome, there's never any drama, the beers good, the musics good and the people are good.

A small cool pub with friendly punters and staff. A small selection of board games are available that me and my partner enjoyed.

Had a great time here over the weekend. Staff are attentive and the atmosphere was awesome. One of the better pubs around the area I'd say. Would definitely visit here again.

Awesome metal bar great music and exceptional ever changing craft beer/real ale selection. Now includes a local Bristol line. . Upstairs is a small capacity venue which hosts lots of metal bands. There's usually a big selection of gigs on throughout the year. Staff are awesome. I love this place. It is the place to go in Bristol if you like metal music and awesome beer

Awesome heavy metal pub in the centre of Bristol. Very friendly owner who will happily talk you through the photos in the wall, that he took. Excellent range of ever changing real ales and craft beer. Fun decor and cheaper than average prices. Great music, if you like metal!

Great metal/rock pub. Visited after seeing Lacuna Coil live - would recommend for any fan of metal/rock to visit if in Bristol, regardless of reason. Excellent atmosphere, great clientele and well priced drinks.

I went here for a show - diocletian being supported by trivax. Not only was this the most insanely awesome show I've ever been to, but everything the gryphon had to offer was incredible too. The ales were delicious and well priced, the service was exceptional from the bar staff who were helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. The room upstairs was incredible, the best gig atmosphere I've ever seen with great sound to boot. Highly recommended to any metalheads in the area, and well worth the trip up for a show. I hope to return!

Cool metal themed pub, and as it is metal typical super friendly service and great selection of beer. All with proper background music 🤘...and a metal themed record store is just around the corner, so after some grate digging a good spot to get some refreshing drinks 😁

The absolute best metal boozer in the whole city. Wonderful staff, the owner is an absolute gem and the beers are super well kept and there's always something new to try! All other drinks super too, and a good variety of spirits. Music is always good too - if you like your metal and alternative then this absolute melting pot of alt cultures is right up your alley!

Love the vibe in this pub. Always welcoming, and Matt on gig entry duty was lovely and kind, even when explaining to me that the ear plugs were indeed ear plugs, and NOT rhubarb and custard sweets 😆

Saturday night - interesting place, interesting people and the BEST heavy metal dj blaring out upstairs ! This is like when you lift up a rock and find there's a whole world of woodlice, snails and toads living under there. A discovered gem that has cemented itself as one of the best rock / metal bars I have been to. Quality night - just a shame I had to eventually go home 🤘🏻🤘🏻

My favourite rock and metal pub in Bristol, music is always on point. Great selection of draught beers and spirits, plenty space for sitting, have live music venue upstairs. The bar staff is always friendly and helpful and sometimes when it’s quiet you can request a specific rock or metal band to be played which in my opinion is awesome. I have been here so many times with friends, soli, with my BF and we always meet some cool people here. The prices are like in most of Bristol pubs not too low and not too high. And the place has very stylish design and it’s a place where you can forget all the worries in life. Love the place!

Played five of my songs when I only requested one. Loved it! Not sure if they play different sub genres on different nights but it was all quite extreme thrash metal from relatively unknown bands. Not sure anyone in there other than the staff recognised a single song played there all night. Better than common pop metal but a crowd pleasure every now and again wouldn't hurt.

Absolutely love The Gryphon - it is a first stop on plenty of my nights out! The pub attracts a great crowd of people, I have had lots of pleasant conversations with people here! The pub has a cool aesthetic and the service is always quick and responsive. The only downsize of this place is the size, you end up having to have to go outside even if it's freezing.

Great selection of spirits. The bar is quite small and the interior is awkwardly designed so there is not a lot of seating options. However it has a fantastic atmosphere and is always busy with friendly people.

The best pub in Bristol 😁 the atmosphere is friendly, the beer changes weekly so there's always something new to try, the landlord is a darling, if insane 😆 It's tiny & the music is loud but it can easily become home from home

Our favourite haunt in Bristol - a wicked metal put with an atmosphere that brings together a community of metalheads and alternative people from all around Bristol. They have a great selection of drinks, all reasonably priced, and regularly host intimate gigs in their upstairs space. Highly recommend to any alternative person who either lives or is passing through Bristol 🤘

Absolutely brilliant pub if you’re a fan of heavy music. Very welcoming staff and pretty cheap drinks to be honest. Really enjoyed accidentally finding this place although it is halfway up a really big hill which is painful. Highly recommend

Gryphon is a cool place to hang out. The atmosphere and aesthetics are absolutely on point for all those who like a metal bar/pub. Good music, mood lighting and incredible decoration. Not to mention you'll always find good beer. As a huge fan of stouts, I have never not been impressed by The Gryphons range of drinks however I have no doubt they have a great pint for anyone! Not a huge amount of seating space and no beer garden but these are small complaints for a place that gets everything else so right!

Love this place! Perfect for rock/metal/alternative people but accepting of all. Some of the best live music in the city too (even though music venue capacity is just 30-40). A lot of love for this place x

This place is awesome! An actual alternative venue, handles on the pints for added stability, a good range of American whiskies, engraved gryphons on the tables, RIK MAYALL everywhere!!! It's like it was made for me!

Excellent beer choice. I had most probably the best Barley wine I have ever drank. Ukraine barrel aged 10.4. .375cl so good drank two and took two home. Music pub with real ale. Highly Recommended

This place has so much potential to be a great pub but it falls short in a pretty significant way, I'll explain: 5 of us came into the pub, waiting for another. Our plan was to have 2 pints each before heading to a gig. With only 3 other patrons in the pub the bar maid completely ignored us when we walked through the door, clearly didn't want to serve us. We asked for beer recommendations and the bar staff ignored us again, so we asked one of the customers instead. One of our group wanted a stout so asked the bar staff if any stouts were on, her response: 'there's one over there' while looking at her phone and not even turning her head. Getting the message we all proply left the pub, clearly 5 extra customers was too much for her to handle. One of us turned around and gave her the benefit of the doubt to check if a bar maid could genuinely be that rude, apparently she was settling someone's tab, which is fine, but why didn't she politely say that and say she will be with him in a minute? Instead she would rather give a customer the perverbial middle finger and tell him to work it out himself because how dare someone walk into a bar and want to know what beer is on at the time, especially when it looked like the bar maid had no other job to be doing at that moment. All five of us are in the industry including one of us who has opened and owns his own pub, some of us have been in Bristol for over 20 years. None of us have ever met anyone working behind a bar who was so rude, and I cannot imagine why anyone would knowingly hire a person who would treat their customers like that. Worst pub I've ever been to in Bristol by far, I recommend going across the road to The Sportsman. It takes you a grand total of 10 seconds and the atmosphere and staff are absolutely lovely. Gryphon needs to hire better staff.

Cool bar with reasonable prices. Found the music choices a little to repetitive after a bit (not my fav sort of metal!) so only stayed for one. Be cool to check a band out there when we visit again.

Brilliant little bar with extremely friendly staff and cracking beer on tap. Menu was varied with a good range of options boasting fresh made burgers. Was a little bit of a wait but SO worth it! Speaking as a chef: that was one hell of a burger and will definitely be back to eat again especially as the missus ordered a burger with salad instead of chips and bun and received a juicy burger on a bed of mixed leaf, tomatoes, mushroom and onion which was well seasoned and dressed. Great pub, great food, great music....can't fault anything. Updated review, as Google insisted: Still feckin awesome! Wonderful crowd and nice to unwind after work with a pint and great music

A right proper metal pub in the heart of Bristol. Great decor, good selection of stouts and porters on tap. Closed a bit too early for a proper party, but enjoyable nonetheless

A great alternative bar, hosts some good bands and themed nights. Most of the staff are friendly, but you get the odd one who seem completely uninterested in their job and barely speak to you, shame really.

I spend the odd Friday night here with mates, but I always seem to bump into old dates in there…… doesn’t stop me from going. Just don’t open the zombie 🧟‍♂️ door next to the men’s toilets…… “don’t open, dead inside” or is it “don’t dead, open inside”?

Of you long for a proper rock pub you won't be disappointed by the Gryphon. The music was great, they had tasty beers and a great atmosphere. We were there every night of our 3 day break. There was even a beer festival on one day with a bunch of good beer.

I have had the pleasure of watching and playing at this great venue. This is a Bristol metal institution. If you are from Bristol and have not played the Gryph, you haven't played Bristol

Oh my! Best pub in Bristol especially if you enjoy Ale great food and Metal. All the staff are awesome. There's always loads of gigs on and other events like Ale festivals. Its a small venue upstairs so it does get crowded at gigs but that's just fine.

High proie of beer. Thats is only one minus. Rest is a Great!! If You like good music and good beer this Pub os for You.

I took my non-metal friends here and now they finally listen to Cradle of Filth and have beards. Great place with good vibes, thanks to our Australian friend for teaching us how to use a belt too.

Had to write this on the back of reading a recent review. I am very much not the ‘core’ demographic for this pub, not meeting the ‘look of a diehard heavy metal proselytiser’. However regardless of this fact I have always been warmly welcomed when visiting. it is without doubt one of the best pubs in Bristol. The Landlord and staff are always keen to recommend one of their very well kept beers as well as being some of the most welcoming and inclusive people you could hope to run in to!!!
