I like old hotel buildings with character and this fitted perfectly overlooking the beautiful church. A little dated in the main areas (toilets could do with a redec) but that keeps with the 16th century atmosphere. The single room was modern, clean with the bed being a little too soft for my liking but I slept ok. Shower was modern although one drawback was it wasn’t a power shower and it had a somewhat weak waterflow with hot water taking some time to come through. The TV was somewhat dated but it worked ok. Room made up each day I was there (3 days) and tea/coffee/biscuits replenished. Breakfast selection was ok and I did not have any cooked offerings but could do with a little extra selection. One draw back here was the butter portions were rock hard so could not spread on toast. Short time window for dinner 7-8.30pm and a bit late for me and no dinners served Sunday either. Parking was a little tricky with space for 3 or 4 cars depending on size but on road parking 6pm-8am (free and time restricted) suited my circumstances.

We stayed for three nights B&B. There are only 6 rooms and some of these are singles, we had a double. It is a delightfully old and quaint hotel built in the 1500's or so. Our room was good, spacious bedroom and bathroom with a walk in shower. A small tv but then we did not go there to watch tv. The bed was old and "tired" but still does the job. Excellent tea / coffee making facilities in the room. Very good room service, very friendly and helpful people there. Breakfast was arguably a little limited by modern standards but had all that we wanted, cereals and cooked breakfast. We also had an evening meal there. It was very good, nice and hot and presented well, the menu was perhaps a little limited but does have something for everyone. Location is excellent, right in the main street with easy walk to anywhere in the town. There are also several good places to visit from this pleasant town easily reachable by car. The only downside to me, although it does provide guest car parking, access to this is quite restricted and a large car would struggle as access is a bit narrow. Once inside car parking is limited to just a few cars and it has a tight turning circle as otherwise it is very difficult to exit. There is however free parking in time limited bays just outside the hotel and also a three hour free limited car park almost opposite, beyond this three hour limit is another car park with no limit as although a sign says it to be private we were told this no longer applies.

I do think that charging an extra £1 for making a payment for a pint via card is rather extreme and frankly greedy. The price of a pint is the price of a pint in my eyes and strange ( what next…an extra 50 pence if you are wearing brown shoes ? ).

This is an centuries old inn on the main road through town, so plenty of exposed timbers. But the building really could do with a make-over. It not quite shabby, but it's bordering on it. However, on the plus side, the food is first-class. We stopped by for a 'quick' lunch and ended up with full plates of hot, fresh, well-prepared food. My wife had a BLT and I had bacon and brie, both in a fresh, crusty baguette. Tasted wonderful with thick rashers of bacon from the butcher's shop across the road. Can't fault the food (or the beer) and the owner was a charming lady.

Visited here for lunch one Friday, late autumn. Was a warm day so we asked if we could be placed away from radiators but apparently this was not possible, so were placed in a very over heated side room where we could luckily open a window. Took almost an hour for an un unwelcoming older waitress to take the order . I ordered a water and ice, which never arrived. The staff didn't seem to want to be there so I find myself perplexed as to why they continue to operate, when It good be a fantastic business opportunity for someone that could take pride in this establishment. The food that arrived was to a very good standard however even thought the choices available were rather outdated and limited for non meat eaters. Needs to get with the times to keep up with the industry and get return customers.

I ordered a coffee on my card which was £2.95 but when I paid cash for another cup while I was waiting for the rain to die down I was charged £3.95 for the same thing. The manager said that it was because of the handling costs of cash and it was cheaper to process on the card ( seems like a scam in my view and should at least be advertised ) .

I stayed for two nights on workplace and after buying a first pint on the bar was asked if it was okay if I paid cash instead of card. I ended up paying £4.40 for a pint on my card even though it was only £3.30 when I paid with cash later. The rooms upstairs? ? Cheap mattresses that have pointy metal springs that dig into you and stinking carpets. A wannabe Ritz hotel with how else's day centre traits

We met up with friends at this venue. What an unpleasant experience. They only had one hand pump real ale on which was Abbott ale. My wife wanted a glass of Pinot Grigio but they only had a single serve bottle of sauvignon blanc. It was served in a dirty glass. The pub smelt of cigarette smoke which I soon discovered was the smell of the manager or landlord.I certainly won't be returning.

So, this is not a chain with huge budgets to spend on creating an identical experience to that you would have in the next town. It's unique, locals drinking local beer propping up the bar. But that's what helps with creating a warm atmosphere. Yes the decor etc could do with a bit of a refurb, but a few drinks with friends and good old pub grub to boot, and you soon forget about that. Our group of 4 had prawn cocktail, whitebait and garlic prawns to start. Perfect portion size and cooked / presented well. Turkey/ cranberry baguette, scampi, lasagne and sirloin for mains. Again, met with a seal of approval from all. This is a pub that serves food. If you want a restaurant that serves the same old beer, then this may not be the place for you.

Sadly we visited the Griffin for dinner and left very disappointed. The starters were excellent!!!The mains however, nor so!!!We ordered lasagne, steak and kidney pie and 2 sirloin steaks, which were the problem. We weren't offered steak knives and had to ask as the normal knives just weren't up to the job. Over 80% of the steaks were inedible.. The owner came out with the chef and apologised. They offered to refund the price of steaks, great we thought!! Unfortunately when it came to paying they had only taken one off, when challenged the girl behind the bar tried to make excuses. She rang the manager he called her to one side, we saw them whisper and then he hid and she returned to the bar. No one came to speak to us, we asked again and was told by the girl that they had only agreed to take the one off, really not ..... So in summary the food was poor, but more over we were lied too. If you can trust a liar and have teeth sharper than a leopard then the Griffin might be worth a visit, otherwise there are plenty of other restaurants worthy of a visit before the Griffin.

I have no problem staying at "no thrills", grotty hotels when necessary. Y'know, hotels like this one with its stained, old carpet; lumpy, springy mattress; freezing cold room with no temperature control; mouldy and limescaled bathroom with its dirty toilet and a half-used bottle of old hand wash for its toiletry offerings; out-of-date cream portions for use with tea and its electronic equipment with PAT safety-test stickers three years overdue... But don't charge me EIGHTY pounds a night for it! I'd previously stayed somewhere nearby for ten pounds extra a night and it was like the royal suite at The Ritz in comparison. This "hotel" is outrageously overpriced. Pure, daylight robbery! Do whatever you can to find an extra tenner or so and stay somewhere else. It's too late for me, but there's a chance here still for you...

Stayed overnight to visit relatives in Attleborough. This is a lovely 15th century building. The pub is quite small but seems popular with locals. Prices very good both in bar and restaurant.Evening meal very nice as was breakfast. Locally sourced food and nicely cooked and very nice staff. We had one very nice and friendly lady serving evening meal and breakfast.Disappointed in our room no 5. The window was broken in bedroom and couldn't be closed as was the sash cord window in bathroom. Felt better glass and curtaining would have been more appropriate. Pillows very unpleasant and hard to sleep and had to put up with presumably electrical humming noise through the night. Nothing associated with the age of building.Sorry, but it would be great if I could have said the room was cosy, warm and welcoming.Felt it could have been a more welcoming room with some thoughtful décor. Given the age and character of the building this could be so much more appealing.

Beautifully cooked & with all the veg etc you would expect. A good portion is provided too. Puddings are also good with a nice choice of all the classic favourites. The only downside (& this is a minor point) was that the service was a touch slow, but as I said at the start it was Mother's Day & I guess busier than average. So all in all very much recommended for a great traditional meal.

Have just stayed here for one night for a family birthday party in Attleborough. This 500 year old coaching Inn has great character but with a bit of love and TLC could have so much more. The bedrooms need a complete refurbishment, they are dated, scruffy, and dusty. We had a double room and the four poster room. The bed linen was clean and the huge beds were comfortable. However the four poster room was cold on arrival and had a broken light on the ceiling (no shade), and the huge dried flower arrangement in the beautiful open fireplace was incredibly dusty. The double room had peeling paint, stained carpet and evidence of damp in the bathroom. Window latches and the toilet seat were broken, on shutting the bathroom door, plaster and cobwebs fell from the ceiling and the shaver light did not work. The coffee table had folded up paper stuffed in the base to stop it toppling over. Our welcome was non existent as the bar was full of locals watching Football and we were subjected to foul language as we entered. The barmaid shoved the keys at us and vaguely waved us up the stairs to find our own rooms and carry our own luggage. We had to sign ourselves in at the top of the stairs. There was no explanation of how to use the phones in the rooms and no offer of newspapers. Breakfast the next morning was ok but not outstanding. If you're going to use metal jugs and coffee pots at least make sure they are stain free before use otherwise they look as though they havent been washed.....china would be so much nicer. Thank goodness we were only using this place as a base to come back to after a party and were only staying one night. The pictures on the web site are very deceiving as they give give totally the wrong impression. We dont mind old and we like character but for £80 per room per night we do expect clean and fresh and good working order and a warm welcome. Would not come back unless this place had a total makeover and sadly would not be able to recommend.

Stayed for a weekend and rather nervous after some of the harsher reviews. The pile of debris in the car park didn't bode well. Entrance was through the bar which was closed and we were directed to our room by Richard. This had obviously been renovated recently and was clean, bright and comfortable apart from a stain high in the ceiling (this IS a very old building). Radiator needed bleeding so consequently room could have been warmer. Windows single glazed so we hear the kids shouting and screaming at midnight. Dinner was generous although not adventurous. We were not warned about the karaoke that started at 9pm and went on until well after midnight when sheer knackeredness brought on sleep. Breakfast was limited but of reasonable quality. Next night was in a different but of equal standard room which we had been warned about. Again, radiator needed bleeding, whilst one of the cords on the old sash windows had rotted so couldn't be fully closed. Fortunately, whilst the room was cool we didn't have to listen to the full volume angst of some drunken teen. Bathrooms only have a rather flowery liquid soap. Overpriced at £80 a night but with Snetterton circuit down the road and no other hotels/rooms available it WAS a seller's market. A colleague suffered the worn out mattress that has been mentioned by other reviewers (it's in Room 1). All the staff were friendly and helpful and no delays in being served.Getting there but a lot of details need working

We were booked in at 7pm but we were left waiting for an hour before we received our starters and no apology or explanation. I can only assume there were several tables booked in at the same time. The starters were good and one of us had the '12oz rump steak' which was excellent, the others had the 'Duck with orange sauce' , the duck again was good and well cooked but this was let down by a poor orange sauce that was much too bitter tasting. We would, however try the restaurant again but I would suggest on busy times that they had more help in the kitchen or at least informed diners if there was to be a long wait for food.

Bear in mind this hotel is over 400 years old, give these people a chance, they deserve it, we would definitely stay there again if in the area!

Great pub, tired but honest. Local beer, friendly atmosphere, and great food from local farms. Great for a few beers with friends or for home cooked food.

I am writing this as a reply to the reviewer who suggested my poor review was as a result of being a rival to the Griffen. I am not happy about this insinuation particularily as I live over 200 miles away and would find any commercial rivalry rather difficult. Since, and prior, to visiting the Griffen we have been to quite a few Bed and Breakfast establishments and have as yet to find one that charges as much for so little. This includes premises abroad. On reflection I feel I may even have 'marked up' the 'charms' of this establishment.

Can't believe some of the reviews! Totally inaccurate probably from rivals!Room was immaculate and en suite was pristine lovely crisp White towels. The pub and bar was welcoming and homely great to relax in and the restaurant food was superb.ALL the food is locally sourced, the local steak was gorgeous, breakfast was local organic poached eggs, the bread and is freshly baked....I could go onSo if you want a taste of the real local life then visit this one!

The landlord needs lessons in customer service and general manners. The decor is old and in need of refurbishment. There are far better places to either eat or stay in the area.

well what can we say !!!! my partner and i booked the Griffin for a family gathering over the bank holiday weekend, we were a bit apprehensive to say the least due to prior review. We were made to feel very welcome from the off , service from a young barmaid named Danni (lovely lass) was great, and when we finally checked in after tasting a few of their gorgeous pints of guinness the manager (Richard) cldnt of been more helpful...The room was freshly decorated and consisted of a 4 poster bed, flat screen tv and tea/coffee making facilities, the en suite was spotless, Danni also made sure there was an iron plus board in room as we had requested As we visit family and friends regularly in this part of the country we will defo stay again

Have just returned from a family gathering in Attleborough , booked in for 2 nights at The Griffin . The pub is scruffy and needs refurbishing . The landlord needs to improve his customer service skills - very poor . Our room - room 6 was small , and at the end of a dark , unlit corridor ! On the way to our room we passed 4 other rooms that seemed like they were a bit smarter and when my sister looked in , she said they had 4 poster beds and were smarter than ours . The furniture was old , cheap looking and dirty, bathrooom needed upgrading , there was no shampoo or shower gel . Bed linen was clean but the worst thing was the bed . The reason why we didn`t sleep was that there were springs sticking out of the mattress . It was laughable , if it hadn`t cost £80 a night ! We were woken the next morning by a barman throwing all the empty bottles into a big skip underneath our window , disturbing the few minutes sleep we eventually did get !The breakfast was very poor , either grapefruit OR juice OR cereal . Then bacon, egg and tomato OR poach or scrmbled eggs . My sisters poached eggs came on half a piece of toast .....as I said ....for £80 a night , it was disgusting . So much so , we checked out after 1 night and slept on my parents conservatory floor . I think the only reason the landlord gets away with such robbery is that there are so few alternatives in the area ......but do yourselves a favour ... do not stay here .

We were staying nearby and were recommended to eat here. The food was pretty good, lovely starters, on hot plates with nice fresh bread. Perfectly cooked steaks. The duck however tasted as though it was from the freezer ( old and tough and defrosted to quickly). There was also too much sauce. If it had been served seperatley it would have been ok. But it was covered in it!!We had to wait ages for our wine order. And there was only another table of 3 in the restaurant side. The rest of the pub was old and in serious need of decorating. Worn our carpets, faded curtains, holes in the wall, which had been patched up with cardboard. The lady in the bar was pleasant and helpful. But she was so busy trying to serve in the bar, take drinks orders in the restaurant. Then serve food.

We stayed here because we were watching our cousin race at Snetterton and we had a table for 12 which the Griffin reserved for us, although only one other table for four was in use in the restaurant. The bar food looked really good though (e.g. steak baguettes, good sandwiches and chips) so that may be the reason the restaurant was not full (also England were playing Ireland in the Six Nations). Starters were huge portions and reasonable at under £5 each. Our party had garlic bread, whitebait and stuffed mushrooms, all very good. The steaks were excellent value and cooked on a chargrill, the fillet was just under £14 and came with the usual chips and onion rings, also a peppercorn sauce was offered. I had duck on a blackcurrant sauce. The duck was beautifully cooked but there was way too much sauce. Mine was served with new potatoes and vegetables, very nice. The vegetarian of the group had Sheperdless pie, which she said was very nice but just too big a portion. There was a limited choice of puddings but again, they were very good and my cheese and biscuits, served with celery and apple, was delicious. Would definitely go there again!

This place had really nice staff, food looked great but as our stay was aimed at going to the Spa at centre parcs we missed due to timings. This is literally a 5 min drive to Centre parcs so great for a weekend getaway or a Nice Stay over if you're doing a long trip. I highly recommend this place.

Sunday Lunch for 5 as a last minute idea, we decided to go local. Despite living less than 10 miles from Great Hockham, I had never been to the village and a charming place it turned out to be. The food was traditional pub grub and the portions huge. Service was great and friendly and the meals fantastic. Unfortunately due to a upcoming holiday to Portugal we were all not drinking bar one of our number but we will make up for that at our next visit as there was a good choice of ale, which the locals seemed happy with! Well worth a look!

Arrived without a reservation, we were offered a choice of tables, served drinks and given a menu. The Staff were attentive and very pleasant, the food was excellent and the service faultless. Little touches like a jug of water and two glasses delivered to the table without us having to ask. Will certainly return in the near future.
