At first glance from the outside it may put “tourists” off, trust me, as a weekend tourist, go inside and have a beer or a game of pool, we were a little apprehensive first time we went in, how wrong we were and now it’s one of our favourites in Chapel, staff and locals who drink there have always made us welcome, and that includes our furry little friend too, 100% recommended

Easily the worst pub in Chapel ! Beer maybe ok if you ever get served ! Staff seem to be too busy talking between themselves! Premises needs a complete makeover ! No doubt they will not miss my custom ! I certainly will not miss going back !

The Griffin (big griff) has all the charm of a working men’s club in the late 90’s as the decor and furniture hasn’t been changed since. The lack card machine meant it was cash only, which added to the nostalgia (just a shame that all the notes are plastic now)! All in all the staff ran a tight ship, keen to uphold all data protection laws, which I can assure you is breath of fresh air for some of us. Can’t wait to go back in a couple of years and see what’s left of the flakey seats.

Bar man rudely told us the bar was closed clearly wasnt , spend your money elsewhere like we did ;go to the Trafalgar instead for nice food&drinks served by nice people been their many times really reccomend, turning away 3 customers at a time becaz their around 20 years old and wear clothes from JD isnt a good business model for the future not everyones on a one off holiday, ur turning away what would be repeating decent customers ,perhaps why this pub is now for sale (19/10/19) was definitely still open that day at that time as they served someone else this was confirmed by a regular outside who had no idea why ,after seeing us leave within a minute as we had spoken to him before entering

Genuinely welcoming, reasonable price on the drinks (pint of ale + g&t was £5.20). Clean and well stocked toilets (actually nice toilet roll!). Service great, they even hung about for us to finish our game of pool and checked at last orders if we wanted anything else! (we're terrible and it took ages). Also has a darts board :) In short, wikd pub! Check it out if you're nearby :) You will be pleased!

Decided to eat here as they advertised 2 courses for £6 which is a good offer for a Sunday as most places are about £8 for 1 course. We went in ordered our drinks and food then went to sit down. After about an hour we finally got our main course and the food was lovely and piping hot. After another 20 mins from finishing our mains we got our pudding which was OK. Now the only reason I'm knocking this place is the amount of time it took to get our food although there was only 1 lady which was serving at the bar, taking food orders, bringing food out and the pub was quite busy. So maybe a few more staff would have been better but as I say the food was lovely

Visited in June, only for a quick drink with my good lady before going to the Italian. Went back on the 18th September in the afternoon with my good lady, what a surprise, live music , great atmosphere, good beer. Went back on the 24th, just as good. If you like going out in the afternoon, give this place a try. They also do food, not tried though but by all accounts it's good.

Called in for a couple of beers on Saturday afternoon. The pub is reasonable smart inside, there's plenty of seating, both inside and out. At the time we visited there was a live band playing, the place was rocking, brilliant! Service at the bar was good, I had the hand pulled beer which was excellent. If this Saturday afernoon was anything to go by I'd certainly go back to visit.

I coming back in August. Locals all well friendly & 100% made us feel really welcome....

As with other places in Chapel St Leonards they give off a kind of locals only vibe, or maybe it's like that in low season? Either way, if you ignore it and go in you'll likely find somewhere friendly and with pretty decent food too! The Griffin is such a place. From the outside it looks like someone's house (and from what some locals told us it's only been open for a few months and was a B&B before) but inside it is quite nice, the central fire was lovely with how cold the wind made the area feel. The staff were incredibly friendly and the food we had (both of us had the home made steak and ale pie with mash and veg) was really good. Prices are very reasonable, at well under a tenner each. We hung around a bit and borrowed some darts, and only left when last orders were called (at around 9pm, but as I say it was low season and I can't say if it stays open later when it's busier.) All in all if we're back in the area The Griffin is somewhere we are highly likely to go again.
