The Griffin in Isle of Wight

The food was excellent! We all thoroughly enjoyed it. Especially the Monterey Cheese & bacon burger and the gammon!! Lovely cosy pub. Would definitely recommend!

We had Sunday lunch at the Griffin with two friends all four of us having the Sunday roast, I wouldn't say it was the best but we have had but by no means the worst we have had! We all agreed the meat (two beef and two pork) was fine but we all agreed there was a shortage of vegetables and the gravy would have been much better had it been served separately! We would like to thank Paul the manager who was understanding when we requested to be seated in a different part of the pub when it was very busy. We will be back

Great atmosphere and outstanding food. Can't rate the Griffin high enough. Passed it a couple of times and stopped in on the way home for an easy meal for the family and was more than pleasantly surprised. Returned on the Sunday for our roast of exceptional value, quality and quantity. Really attentive and approachable staff and amazing prices. Very family and dog friendly.

We visited the Griffin as a group, the team was very attentive and friendly, the food was served quickly and was good! Special mention to Dale, who made the visit very pleasant!

Wow, the sun was shining as we had a drink in the lovely beer garden. We then decided to move into the restaurant for some lunch. We ate Steak and Caramelised Onion Focaccia with fries and gravy. It was delicious and George's company made it extra special. We would definitely recommend and shall be returning possibly for The Christmas Afternoon Tea!

Friendly, helpful staff. Great atmosphere and locals very welcoming especially Dave. So welcoming we popped back for a second visit on our scooters and had lunch, food was fantastic and very promptly served.

We recently stayed in the island fir a week and visited The Griffin on 3 occasions which shows how amazing we found it The decor and atmosphere was very traditional and comfortable with the added bonus of a maze and children’s play area in the large garden that kept the children entertained All staff we met were friendly and attentive The food was amazing and we tried a number of dishes and not one of them failed us. Large portions, freshly cooked with the tastiest ingredients The value was exceptional and a 2 course children’s meal (home cooked and large) was just six pounds - can’t even get a fast food meal for that Wish we could visit more and will be first on our list when we visit the island again

What a wonderful Sunday lunch. A full plate load of perfectly cooked food, and to make it even better top ups of roast potato’s and Yorkshire puddings. Great staff that are a credit to the pub too. Just make sure you book 😁

At the risk of the place becoming so busy, 7after this review, that we may not be able to book a table for the foreseeable future, I would like to say that the Griffin at Godshill on the Isle of Wight, could possibly be the best place for Sunday lunch on the island. The triple meats roast is to dye for, it even comes with unlimited top-ups of roasties, Yorkshire puds and gravy. The service was quick and professional and the staff, engaging and friendly. Three of us, had Sandwiches of Focaccia which were very tasty. I had the fish cake salad. Which was excellent! Exceeded our expectations!!

I paid £16 for the chicken and pancetta pie which was the smallest pie I think I’ve ever seen and was more a tart than a pie. It came with a few vegetables and a jug of cheese sauce. I then had the “biscuit cheezecake” which was the thinnest slice I’ve ever seen in my life. I didn’t have any issues with the taste, but the portion sizes definitely had a lot to be desired, especially for the price. However, I enjoyed the decor and the toilets were nice.

We arrived as a 3 generation family of 5 with a doggy. Very friendly host who immediately petted the pooch. Although we were too late for the roast, the food from the menu was very good. The pup was comfortable and that made us comfortable. We had the ribs, burgers, hunters chicken.... no complaints from anywhere. No hesitation in recommending the Griffin. Great place....enjoy

Easily the best place to eat on the island! Fully dog friendly which meant we could take the pooch! Even had a doggy menu with beer, pawnstar martinis and fish and chips! Loved every second and the staff were fantastic!

The Griffin was our first stop on the IOW after a long morning of travelling, and what a great first impression. The food and drinks were delicious and well priced, and the staff were wonderfully attentive and welcoming. Very dog friendly - we got the dogs out in the carpark to stretch their legs after the ferry ride. The man behind the bar encouraged us bring them in, even after we warned him that they might take some time to settle after being in the car for a couple of hours. This didn't phase him at all - he found us a quiet corner, and then brought over plenty of dog treats, giving them a big fuss to help them relax. We will definitely stop in again if we return to the IOW.

Once again such a welcoming Pub from Staff and Landlord. Sausage and Mash superb as were the Fish and Chips. Such a great Pub!

Stopped here for dinner while staying in the area. The pub itself is very characterfull and it was nice to see all the tables were laid for dinner. We went on a Friday night and the restaurant and pub overall was very quiet with just a few diners. We opted for the three course menu which was very good value for money at £18.50 for three courses. However, the food quality was a little bit hit and miss. The food arrived extremely quickly, and as soon as the starters had been cleared, the mains arrived, which is always a little bit offputting to be served so quickly, although the food was standard of cheaper end pub food, the scampi and chips was a little bit underwhelming with the hunters chicken being a slightly better option. The fact that the food came so quickly meant that we didn’t even get to order a second drink! The two desserts were very dissappointing and not particularly flavoursome. Overall, it was a very quick and easy meal with the staff friendly and what appeared to be a resident staffy dog called George adding some character to the restaurant.

We went for the valentines deal of steak and wine. The steaks were cooked to perfection and the staff were friendly. We found out that the chef that cooked our steaks was called Connor he does an amazing blue steak.

Popped in to have some lunchtime drinks with local friends from the village. We always take our dog with us who always loves being in the pub. Myself and my husband decided to stay for dinner and try their new dishes on the menu. Hubby had Hake and scallop tagliatelle which he thoroughly enjoyed. I had the short beef rib which was also delicious. As usual staff friendly and efficient. I noticed 2 new members of staff who were chatty and welcoming. We live in the village and are very lucky to have this dog friendly, local friendly pub here. Thanks again Griffin staff.

This pub has a stunning atmosphere. Food is delicious and one of the best steaks 🥩 i’ve ever had. Lovely location in a village and staff very friendly with prompt service. Highly recommend.

We stopped for a very late lunch. All round awful. Even standard fish and chips were bad, with strange coloured batter. Chicken pies were claiming to be award winning!? They came out minutes from ordering which was worrying from the outset. Accompanying veg was cold. Chicken skewers were limp, grey chunks of chicken dowsed in sweet chilli sauce. Couldn't get out quick enough. £77 down the drain. Won't be back again.

Clean and spacious . Excellent friendly service. Dogs made welcome together with superb Vegetarian meal made this a very enjoyable evening.

Was served by kat who was lovely to talk to, quick service and the food was lovely, even got the pleasure of sitting by the warm fire!! Willl be returning :)

Came to the griffin on Sunday on the off chance, was meet by a very polite man who found us a seat. The food was lovely. The decor is lovely and a massive improvement on my last visit. I Was also met but the gorgeous George which was a lovely addition to our experience.I will be recommending the griffin to friends and family

Yesterday Sunday Dinner I went out for the first time since my husband passed away, I went with my son and daughter to get us out of the house, I ordered at the bar when we went in then offered to pay, the waitress said No it will be easier for 'us' if you come up after your main meal and order desserts then, indicating we would be having the free desserts. I thought at this point that they knew the table was pre-booked so we would take advantage of the free dessert that was on offer throughout November. After dinner I went up and ordered as told to, then after the meal I went to pay. The Manager in there, a Man who then started to Be-little me, saying why didn't you tell me at the beginning that you had pre-booked?? I said where does it say I have to tell you that? I indicated that the waitress who stood next to him had said just order after the main meal. He then started to spout out rubbish about if we did that to everybody we would be giving away 200 meals a day. Tbh I don't really care about that, I just wanted a relaxing meal. He spoke to me like a piece of rubbish, It was hard enough for us to go out, let alone have this altercation. If he hadnt got anything nice to say, I was he hadnt said anything. I was upset and started to cry, he then followed me all the way back to the table trying to apologise, seeing how upset I was. I live in Whitwell and have visited several times before not having a problem. He could have just apologised and refunded the desserts, lets hope that he learns from this and his customer service improves. I wont be visiting again. Having said that the food was great.

We where only here for some drinks with a group of friends. The bar staff where friendly , good option of drinks and bar snacks. I did notice a good range of dog treats and food on sale here as well which is good to see

After a day out, we chanced a visit without booking. The manager was instantly friendly and found us a table, advising us they were busy that evening, so the table was only available for 90 minutes. We ordered quickly with some good advice about choices for our coeliac family member. The food was absolutely top quality and for a group of eight, no errors. The service was impeccable. We asked if we could stay for the pub quiz and despite the very best efforts of the manager to accommodate us, he was fully booked. We were so impressed with the quality, we booked for the following night and two extra guests. We were made to feel so welcome and the food was impeccable again. If we had not made a booking at a different establishment prior to our holiday, we would have eaten at the Griffin, every night of our stay. We will be visiting IOW again and will DEFINITELY be visiting the Griffin again. Couldn't recommend it highly enough! Thank you and well done. X

First visit to the Griffin for many years and we seriously couldn’t fault it. The pub has been renovated and looks great. We were an hour late for our booking due to the recent flooding and various road closures. I rang and explained we were going to be late and they helpfully moved our reservation to accommodate us. Paul and his staff were all really friendly. We went for Sunday lunch, my husband had the triple roast and I had the sirloin beef and can honestly say it was the best roast dinner we've had out for ages. Our dog enjoyed a couple of treats from the dog menu and also had a few extra treats from Paul too!! We both had the sticky toffee pudding and that was lovely as well. We so very nearly cancelled with the difficulties trying to get over to Godshill due to the weather conditions and road closures that day, but both agreed it was well worth making the effort negotiating the various diversions and will definitely visit again when we’re back on the Island.

Our first visit, won't be our last! Visiting on holiday, pub walking distance from where we were staying. Sunday lunchtime, very busy.
