We visited the Greys Inn on several evenings during our short holiday stay in Embleton. Each time we received a warm welcome, the staff were very friendly and the beer was excellent. The pub is clearly popular with local residents and visitors. Good food is served, the beer selection, particularly the locally sourced real ales, is top notch and dogs are welcome too. All in all the Greys Inn is very well run pub and a great place to enjoy a relaxing evening.

At last I’ve managed to talk myself out of my addiction to the delicious bigos! So this time, with only minor regret, I had fantastic fish cakes and sweet potato fries. They were great and so was my wife’s mac and cheese. We’d started with whitebait and we finished with ice cream and apple crumble. They Greys are so consistently getting it right! It’s great to see. The dining room was satisfyingly busy. Oh and a great guest pint too – Consett Ale Works: Steeltown Bitter.

Proper old village pub. Friendly staff, good ales and very good food at reasonable prices. Dog friendly too, what more do you want? Superb beef and ale pie, with beef that had been cooked a long time to make it beautifully tender; and great fishcakes off the specials board, all at a reasonable price.

Passed this pub and decided to try it. As my wife and I ordered a drink, a local drunk guy at the bar began to be obnoxious, so we took our drinks outside. We saw the drunk guy leave, (driven home in a posh convertible) so we ordered a meal, which was not very good. The steak in the steak pie was tough and the pastry undercooked.

We read the reviews and decided to eat here one evening. We had a nice starter of scallops, but the main course was very poor - the fish was anything but fresh, the chips appeared to have been reheated several times, and even the peas were tasteless. As it was a Monday, perhaps it was the chef's day off? Oh and the real ale was flat. There are quality places to eat in Embleton but I'm afraid this isn't one of them.

We have visited this pub many times over several years and really enjoyed the ability to combine being a thriving local with handling an influx of tourists - previously meals were efficiently ordered, cooked well and quickly and as a result there was a good turnover of tables. This time despite there being a lot of staff around, wiping tables and rearranging cutlery it took an age before the order was taken, longer still for the food to arrive and when it did, was very average in quality. The beer was still very good but service behind the bar slow.

Isn't the English Countryside great. Full of pubs. And when it starts raining and you are without a coat, what better place to scamper off to. That was our fate. Walking in an area we have been dozens of times and we ended up sheltering in a pub we'd previously missed. But the Grey's will be on the list now. In fact we found a camp site not far away so the next time we are thater we can walk. 5 hand-pulled beers, all seasonally appealing. Lots of outdoor covered areas, choice of bar / restaurant and a cracking menu we struggled to pick from. That's why we need another trip. Really welcoming team. Thank you.

Another visit for us. Food was quite good for the price. I had the brie starter which was lovely but my main was a big disappointment. I had the ham and eggs which for over 8 quid was nothing more than a few slices of ham, 2 not very good eggs and some chips. That being said, the rest of the party were really happy with the food so maybe I just made a bad choice. The staff were really friendly and we all liked the informal atmosphere. In general we had a really good night with good food at reasonable price. Would go again but choose something different.

This has to be the friendliest pub I have ever been in. The landlord has struck the perfect balance between providing a genuine "local" and an excellent restaurant. The selection of local real ales was first class, the food was outstanding and excellent value but it was the atmosphere that made it a truly outstanding experience. The landlord, staff and locals were so welcoming that we felt as if we had lived in the village for years.

we were struggling to find somewhere to eat, and this was actually the closest pub to where we were staying, so we decided to give it a try. Definitely a pub for the locals which adds atmosphere, but the mgmt. didn't seem to be able to handle the amount f people wanting food. the food we had was ok. I had no complaints about my lasagne, and my wife said the lamb was lovely, but the service was poor from start to finish. my wife's lamb came out with the wrong side dishes, which on its own is a minor issue. We then ordered desserts, all of us choosing two scoops of ice cream. My wife's came out immediately, and she had to eat it whilst waiting for ours to come out, which ended up being over 5 minutes later. When ours came out, they were both the wrong flavours, but the waitress just thought we were joking with her and just laughed and walked off?!? we didn't bother chasing it down, and just ate what we had and then asked for the bill....and got someone elses! Pointed this out and got the right bill, except for a LOT of drinks on there that weren't ours. they took them off, but we were amazed at how poorly it was being run.

While driving on the Northumberland costal route we popped into the greys in Embleton for a beer and a bar meal after having a great walk on Alnmouth beach and driving to Craster to buy some kippers. There were two couples and three dogs.The. Pub was fairly busy; but they could not have made us or the dogs more welcome, water and dog biscuits available for the dogs and an open fire for them to dry off in front of . For us a good selection of cask beers I opted for Alnwick IPA a great choice. A large selection of food from mains to sarnies. I opted for a meat baguette the others opted for various Panninies and bowls of chips the chips were really good as we're the Panninies but the star of the show was my meat baguette stuffed with roast lamb, blinding! The pub has a full blown evening menus and dining room as well as a vast beer garden although it being March and very windy we stayed inside by the fire.I would recommend the pub to anyone, but especially to dog owners.

We had lunch today at Grays Inn. I ordered crab salad,my wife sausage and mash, and our two kids cheesy pasta. We got our food except that my salad was not just off but rotten! We sent it back, however the dish returned with the rotten salad trimmed and 'fresh bread' re heated and burnt. My wife's meal actually came with chips not mash as described and the chips had been re cooked several times judging by colour and taste. The total bill with drinks was £32 which was a complete waste of money. For some reason the barmaid insisted the salad had been delivered that day which was nonsense. We are not professional complainers and don't usually write reviews but felt compelled to after this experience.

This is the second time we've eaten here, and once again were not disappointed. Two things you should know:1. Don't be in a rush if you choose to eat here2. The menu is, compared to some restaurants, limited - but for a non meat eater (I eat fish), there was a great selection.Having booked for 6:30pm we arrived just in time to fight our way to the small bar tucked away in the corner of a small pub. The place was packed with people enjoying a drink or eating. We were shown through to the back room, where there are a few tables, and a nice open fire.As we were looking at the menu, a family party of 8 arrived, so we thought great we are in before them. The waitress was busy serving food in the bar, setting up the serving area etc., and we had rather a long wait to place our order. Orders duly taken, and then the food arrived for the large party, and we thought we are in for a long wait. Not so, my oven baked cod served with prawns, mussels and calamari, with four vegetables (in my opinion cooked to perfection with the right amount of crunch), and the best chips I have ever eaten! My friend had chosen the sirloin steak medium rare - once again cooked to perfection.Pudding? Sorry we were too full to eat a pudding, and were pleased we weren't tempted with a starter - but don't let that put you off, you probably have a bigger appetite than I have!Yes the dining room is small, but we hardly heard the four young children in the room at the same time. Oh and we left 7:30pm - not slow service. We are looking forward to eating there again, and suggest you try it, don't be put off by the exterior / entrance - this chef is going places.

As the food came out it looked excellent so we decided to book a table for 9 of us the following night, We were welcomed back with as warm a welcome as the previous night. Booked meal while staying at Dunsan Hill Caravan site after reading some good reports. Unfortunately didnt quite live up to our expectations. We were a party of four, three having Gammon and one Scampi. Food was of reasonable standard, tho just basic with chips and peas. We had to request drinks having sat with empty glasses for some time. We opted to go for desserts rather than starters as unsure what the size of the meals would be. Not the biggest of menus for desserts, tripple chocolate cheesecake, which was nice but a very solid topping, lemon mirangue pie which was very dry and a torte which the waiter didnt really know what was as new on the menu. All in all a pub meal, no more no less! We did find the restaurant to be very noisey, tho of course they cannot control that, maybe closing the door between the bar and the restaurant would help. Also closing the door between the restaurant and the entrance to the gents toilets, as not nice having to watch all gents checking themselves while trying to enjoy a meal!!

We stayed in a fantastic holiday cottage near the pub whilst on a walking holiday. We visited the pub twice, once as the food we nice although on the expensive side for a pub, however we felt as "tourists" we were not made welcome. The pub was busy and the staff and landlady we very rushed and abrupt with the service of our meal. We also had to wait a long time before we could order the food and eat. The attitude from the landlady seemed to be less than hospitable and as she stated they have enough local business and did not need the tourists! We put this experience down to the pub been busy, so went back another night in the week that was quieter. Still no change, the food is very nice although the attitude and atmosphere of the pub lets it down badly. Dogs are welcome at this pub but only in the front bar where you sit at small tables and takes ages to get a seat. We found the pub down the road The Cottage in Dunstan was better value for money and the food was excellent. They were even more dog friendlier as dogs were allowed anywhere in the bar and conservatory, the main restaurant was kept dog free! Unless you want to walk to a pub then that is fine otherwise go to the other pubs in the next villages, the Joiners Arms and The Cottage are brilliant for food and atmosphere.

We recently spent a week self catering in Embleton. For once the weather was beautiful which helped with the enjoyment of our holiday. Self catering? What a laugh! The food was so good in this establishment that we broke the bank and ate here every night! That being said the fair pricing of the food allowed us to do that. The menu was varied and you have to be a dedicated carnivore to finish the tasty shoulder of lamb. Some great real ales on tap here with the Alnwick IPA proving very popular. Another bonus was the fact that they allow dogs in which is great if you have a holiday cottage in the village.and don't want to leave them unattended. A spectacular beach is only a short walk away. Staff and local customers were very friendly and the pub is run in a very organised fashion. Unfortunately on the last night after finishing our main course we were asked if we had finished with our table in the bar area as someone wanted it without being offered the dessert menu which slightly irked us after spending so much money during the week but in retrospect it is testimony to the popularity of the inn and it was a Friday night and consequently busy. If we come back to Embleton we will continue to patronise this place and we recommend that you do as well.

On holiday with our young family we can only afford to eat out once in a holiday. We had looked forward to the meal we had booked in advance at the Greys Inn. Sadly disappointed in many ways. Most of the things were off the menu and we had to reorder. My daughter ordered a pasta in cheese sauce which was off the kid's menu: the sauce was lumpy and of a horribly consistency. I ordered the special sirloin steak which had a horrible after taste. The food was not particularly warm and the waitress just did not seem to understand how to take an order. Simple questions were a tad overwhelming and she had to refer to the other barmaid most of the time. It took ages to even get a steak knife and getting a decent bottle of red wine was beyond her. Very upset and disappointed at a complete waste of money. The next night we had a take away curry from M and S which was much much better quality (and obviously loads cheaper!)

Had been recommended the Grey's for its food so booked in the morning for a time suitable to us and them. Very busy when we turned up (a nice day had enticed the visitors out) and had to wait for our table. The table we were shown to was next to the door to the rear terrace (also busy) and I was constantly buffeted by staff and customers and felt the cool wind. We had both chosen the celebrated steak pie with vegetables. The pie was good (but not that good!) but the vegetables were uncooked! We actually like our veg on the al dente side, but these carrots and cauliflower were solid. We sent them back. Over half way through the pie, the veg returned. And this is the unacceptable thing - they were still uncooked! A complaint brought "no charge for the beer" to our bill, but really I should have refused to pay more than half the food cost. British reticence to really make a fuss. Instead we shall never eat there again.Worth mentioning that we holiday in Embleton most years. Relatives have holiday cottages there. My wife spent much of her childhood there and even I have known, and drunk in, The Grey's for a good 40 years.

An excellent place to eat. This seems at first to be a rather ordinary pub with a simple dining room at the back. We had to wait a little bit for our table because the dining room was so popular but when we got our food we realised why. And it was not that it as cheap as chips. The food was unelaborate but was well designed, and freshly prepared from good ingredients by a kitchen that clearly knows its business. Nice wine. Friendly and efficient staff. If you want good food in a relaxed atmosphere and are not stuffy then this is a really good place to eat.

Warkworth has a small nucleus of great places to eat, and we'd never tried Bertrams, so we went. It was a no brainer given the quality of other reviews. The only downside was that we had to get in and out early so were nearly the first people in hence little "atmosphere" but that was our agenda not the restaurant, and we were there for the food... ... which was first class. Superb hake served with a beautiful herby crab pate and dauphinoise potatoes. The flavours were immense and everything was cooked to perfection. You notice the difference with real quality and top chef standards and this delivered for me. The lemon meringue dessert was the proverbial icing on the metaphorical cake. Superb.

My cousin and I were hugely impressed by Castaways. I had been reluctant to go because about 20 years ago the original café had been taken over by a useless couple. But when I passed and looked in, I could see that its original atmosphere had been recreated by the current management. Our reception was very friendly. The café was full (always a good sign) and we were third in the queue. Our table was soon ready and we were seatedby a waitress. We were very comfortable and the atmosphere was nice. Many pleasant people there as customers happily dining and chatting. Good choice of food and drink. I had the traditional breakfast and my cousin had… I think it was avocado and egg on sourdough bread. We were both very content with our lunch. I will certainly return and bring members of my family to enjoy castaways. Nicely sited, easy car parking and great views over Seaton Sluice and the sea. Get yourself along there and have a treat!
