The Green Tree in York

It's a proper pub. Growing up in York, I can honestly say the twig (aka green tree) is a welcoming proper pub!

My family lives around Acomb and has always enjoyed The Green Tree... until our brief visit on NYE 2024. A group of us were sitting in the lounge, enjoying a pint or two before attending a family party. The first hint that something was amiss was when I noticed the 'news' channel on the TVs was 'GBNews'. We then noticed a picture of Donald Trump. Then, a gentleman appeared and started talking to us, loudly proclaiming that it's time to 'Make England Great Again', informing our group that the Scots, Welsh, and Irish don't like the English, etc. He then went on to say that Trump has it right on immigrants. He singled out a member of our group (who happens to be black), pointed at him, and referred to him numerous times as a 'coloured bloke', but said he was alright as 'he's integrated'. We felt very uncomfortable and embarrassed that our friend had been singled out, and we left quickly. It's barely believable and completely depressing that in 2025, there are still bigots like this. We will not return. And who was the racist in this review? None other than the landlord of the pub.

The Green Tree is a large community pub. There is a bar with a dart board and a separate lounge. There's a good choice of beers lager and cider including a hand pulled cost conditioned real ale Hobgoblin Ruby which was in excellent condition when I visited. The staff are very welcoming, there is outside seating and the pub is dog friendly.

Beautiful old style pub. Lounge and bar area. Only experienced the lounge so far, but it was very comfortable and very relaxed. Bar staff were lovely and helpful, and the other patrons were nice to chat to. As ever in York very dog friendly. Will be returning regularly.

Short stop to have drinks and snacks. Everywhere nice and clean, service excellent.

I’ll allocate 5 stars to this pub, a good around public house. Motivated management and staff, a place where the landlord himself takes a pleasure in keeping the pub clean. Excellent Guinness, fantastic atmosphere, comfortable and spacious inside and outside with the a joining beer garden. A real community spirit which makes any public house “a must” I spent less than a week in York, over from France visiting family and enjoyed a couple of pints midweek early lunchtime hours.

Nice pub. One of the few in the area that actually has Sky and BT Sports.

Early evening beers and a pizza. Ive only been here a handful of times but it seems quite busy and locals seem chatty. Pizza was good and not expensive either. Theakstons beer is on tap at a reasonable price too, no wonder its a bustling pub

Two bars in this pub. The one on your right is for friends hanging out and tradesman local pub, so it can be loud entertainment for someone who wishes for calmness. Therefore Green tree have another bar on the left side where it is calm. Family and dog friendly atmosphere. The locals are really respectful and helpful. Paul the landlord, done great job in general but mostly employed the right people. Very nice. Sky sports Is a bonus.

Big beer garden and large screen for showing live sport.

Only not 5 star because certain friends would say without real ale on tap couldn't be a 5 star. Who cares? Always welcomed here and have a good time (karaoke, sporting events). It's my local and it does the job well!

Enjoyable drink and lots of screens to watch all that is going on.

A nice pub,warm and a good selection of beers

A friendly local with a hard-working landlord and landlady who keep their beer lines immaculate - you can see through every lager you order with ease, served in super clean glasses. A very nice beer garden and clean toilets as well, recommended.

Enjoyed my visit to the green tree in York. I was visiting from Leeds and they have a great beer garden and good service. The weather helped, but they've a nice set up for you to enjoy.

Would like to have given ZERO star rating. Apart from the horrible smell in the lounge, the broken windows boarded up, the furnishings in need of renovation and the state of the customers it's difficult to find adequate words to describe the experience. DEFINITELY a place to avoid. The bar staff were pleasant.

If uve never seen a green tree then u need to come here blood great green tree.

Sorry its took so long to post - we were visiting my brother who lives in Acomb for xmas and part of the family went for a xmas day walk and stumbled across this pub. What an absolute treasure we found. We were greeted warmly and the atmosphere was brilliant. We ended up talking to the landlord who even offered to buy us a drink. When we are next up we will pop in again
