The Green Cafe was bringing all the autumnal vibes even though it was busy, the sausage roll and the autumnal hot chocolate was so tasty, I was so full that I had no room for a pud. I highly recommend going there for lunch after your visit to the Washington Town Hall.

We went here for a full English breakfast as tripadvisor said breakfast but ended up with a sausage baguette and yoghurt(not our idea of breakfast). We felt rushed going in as we hadn't been before so we're unsure what to order and the only menus around were the big coffee boards. I had to go back down to order food. I saw the cakes and saw a fly in the cake stand so put me off completely. After 20 minutes we were told that there was no bacon...at 9 o'clock in a morning. Settled for a sausage sandwich. It arrived and looked very nice however I wouldn't bother going for food there again.

We went to the pizza place at the back of the cafe. It’s a great atmosphere, small, cozy and busy! The pizzas we all had were great. I had a pistachio pesto mortadella pizza and it was honestly one of the nicest pizzas I’ve had in an along time and something a bit different. We also came to the main cafe for lunch. The toasties were great as were the coffees and cakes. Great to see they cater for gluten free as well with gluten free pizza bases, as well as toasties and a great selection of gluten free cakes

Popped in for a quick bite and a coffee on a Wednesday afternoon, there were 3 other tables in the cafe when we placed an order for 2 coffees and 2 toasties. Drinks came immediately, however we then waited nearly 45 minutes before we had to ask where our food was as we had both finished our coffees. Despite there being 5 staff members working, they claimed they had “lost the ticket” and not even the girl who took our order seemed to notice we were sat with an empty table for so long looking rather agitated. After sitting for an hour, we finally received our toasties (which had different ingredients in them than what we paid for) without an apology or an offer of a fresh coffee for the trouble. To top this off, the food was dry. Usually a nice cafe, however this has happened twice now. Terrible customer service compared to competitors, which is a shame as it’s a gorgeous place.

As a relative newcomer to the North East, I never cease to be surprised by the delights we discover on our travels throughout the region. Take yesterday, for example, when a family visit to the National Trust’s Old Hall in Washington not only proved a pleasant experience for all of us - thought the displayed modern art in the entrance lobby did not appeal to me in any way, shape or form - but also subsequently led to the discovery across the Green (full marks to the volunteers who buy, plant and maintain the flowers and shrubs there) of the village ‘concept store’ with its quirky handcrafted gifts, floristry services and vintage tearoom. It has to be, without any shadow of a doubt, one of our most enjoyable experiences of recent times. It’s a fascinating teashop, the locally-produced buns and cakes were heavenly and the lady proprietor was most charming and helpful. She would be a gold medal winner in any establishment. All in all, a wonderful day out. We certainly intend to return to Washington to see what The Forge restaurant (in, I believe, the same ownership as the tearoom) just a few yards away, has to offer. Just hope those home-made cakes feature in some way on the dessert menu!

Visited this morning and ordered two coffees and a ‘Festive Toastie’. I wish I hadn’t. The coffee was bitter and of poor quality and not particularly hot. The toastie though... wow. Inedible. Processed, supermarket sliced turkey. Utterly, utterly tasteless. A slice of processed cheese and a liberal (i.e. far too much) coating of what I imagine was meant to be cranberry sauce. I doubt it contained any cranberry and tasted more like raspberry jam. Barely warm. A handful of tasteless crisps which weren’t crisp. The toastie got put in the bin along with two half cups of coffee. Two hours later, I’m still feeling queasy. Dreadful. There were several folks out for a frosty morning walk, many with dogs. No water bowls for dogs. If the coffee and snacks were of good quality, this place could be making a fortune. Using the cheapest of ingredients is no way to encourage return visits. We won’t be back. Very disappointing indeed.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

For years this was the old village green library, now pleasantly brought back to life as a tea room, come florist, come bric-a-brac shop. It has been done in a shabby chic style, giving it a warm, homely appeal and unlike many such establishments, is open until 5 pm. Their coffee is excellent and they have a wide range of teas to choose from. Delicious cakes and scones are a welcome accompaniment. We also saw a rather tasty looking pie, which we must go back and try, sometime soon. An ample choice of snacks and savouries is available daily. The seating space inside, would be rather limited at busy times; given that much of the available floor space is taken up with the cornucopia of other products on offer. There are a few seats outside but it is getting to that time of year, when these become impracticable due to the weather.Whilst diversity is often a good thing, I feel it might be better to have a singlular identity. By that I mean that it would be far better to have a room full of customers eating and drinking, rather than have half of the space taken up with stuff that might only sell now and again. The Green is ideal for those living in the village, though it can be accessed by public transport. If you are travelling by car, parking space is limited. Years ago, the village was regularly frequented by many American tourists, coming to see the "Original" Washington. Sadly this is not the case these days; which is a pity, as the tea rooms and other small businesses, would have benefited greatly.

Had a hen do in the hut behind the Green. Was a lovely little place and the staff were fabulous. We had a delicious variety of wood fired pizzas made throughout the afternoon and a gorgeous buffet provided whilst drinking bubbly we took ourselves. Great fun and perfect for an intimate event. Will be back as this is a gem of a place!

We wanted food, but unfortunately, it was finished. The bar lady came to show us other places we could eat. She was so kind, we decided to stay for a drink or 3! It was quiz night and the pub was busy, but the lady said there was sausage casserole later on. When the quiz had a break, she made sure we got some casserole and it was really good. A fun evening and the locals made us feel very welcome! Highly recommended - especially on quiz night 😊

Attended a party here last night, Terrible service and drinks. The staff were miserable definitely no service with smiles in this place. I do agree with the last review, the staff need customer service training. Gin with a warm bottle of cheap lemonade for my first drink, Then I got a glass of Warm Prosecco (which I was advised by the staff that the party guests were drinking far to quick so can’t chill quick enough)🥴 Then I received a flat dreg from a different kind of Prosecco bottle which I had to send back. Then I noticed each round of the same drinks I was being charged different prices. When questioned I was told I should be lucky that I have been undercharged the previous time🥴 Good job this place is at the bottom end of the town so it was a 1 off visit, I’ll not have to visit again.

Had been to the Sunday Market at South Shields. We decided to go again to Suzies cafe for a coffee. We found a parking space and my husband went to get them I had a hot soup (vegable) and my husband had a coffee. Both really enjoyable. While were.sitting in the car.a car pulled in a disabled bay, no disabled badge.on. They didn't pay. I'm disabled and .always show my badge. Then another car pulls.up ( we were in a norma bayl as no disable.were free when we parked) along beside us, gets out dad,ma m amdchild. They too didn't pay. When we were coming out spotted two traffic wardens - hope 2 cars get a ticket.

Quick note before review. They only accept cash. I wanted to try it as it is a lovely setting and bakehouse. I went in at 10:30am and fancied some quiche off the menu. It wasn't ready (wasn't cooked). There really wasn't anything that made it a bakehouse on the day. I ended up having homemade broccoli and stilton soup and a old school corned beef toastie which was quite nice.
