Quick note before review. They only accept cash. I wanted to try it as it is a lovely setting and bakehouse. I went in at 10:30am and fancied some quiche off the menu. It wasn't ready (wasn't cooked). There really wasn't anything that made it a bakehouse on the day. I ended up having homemade broccoli and stilton soup and a old school corned beef toastie which was quite nice.

We popped into Bede's recently as we were passing through Sunderland to visit the Glass Centre. As we had a dog with us, this was a good place for one of us to grab a coffee whilst the other did the Glass Centre. Only guide/service dogs are allowed indoors but there was a table outside for dry days that would suit dog guardians. Staff were incredibly helpful and friendly and chatty. They brought water for the dog. It was so nice there that we stayed for lunch. Prices are incredibly low (for visiting southerners anyway). We included a tour of the church in our trip. A highlight of our longer visit to Northumberland and Tyne & Wear.

This is Sunderland's best kept secret. The Bede Bakehouse is in the Chapter House of the 7th Century St. Peter's Church, the place where the Venerable Bede started his studies in 680AD. We pop in at least once a week. Just a grand place to have lunch. It is mainly home cooked food and the prices are very good, main meals are between £2.75 and £3.50. There is a mixed menu, with at least one main meal, always a soup and crusty roll, various sweets and cakes and other snacks. Tea, coffee and other refreshments, but no alcohol. It is run by volunteers, who are really friendly. Just a smashing little place. You can usually get a guided tour of the church as volunteer guides are on duty most days. They have just completed a project in the grounds, laying out the shape of the original Mediaeval monastery. Only open at present on weekdays between 10.30am and 2pm, but they tell us they intend to extend the opening hours soon.

What an amazing venue! From the moment you walk into Carnival House you feel instantly at ease, it has such a warm and relaxed vibe. They have so many amazing things going on, I most recently visited for their Paint n’ Plonk night, which was fantastic! They have a well stocked bar with a great cocktail menu, and all the staff are super friendly and so welcoming. There is even a mini market/store with lots of amazing hand crafted products and unique pieces on offer. We can’t wait to come back and sample the food, which all looked unreal! I highly recommend calling into this place, whether it’s for a cuppa, a meal, or one of their many fantastic events ☺️

Family of 6 of us visited for brunch - myself and my husband with my grandparents, uncle and aunt. My Gran had booked a table ahead as she knew that this place gets busy (although it wasn't too bad at the time we arrived). Ordering food and drinks was easy enough and prices very reasonable. Good choice of food which was really tasty when it arrived. Very friendly staff.

Attended a party here last night, Terrible service and drinks. The staff were miserable definitely no service with smiles in this place. I do agree with the last review, the staff need customer service training. Gin with a warm bottle of cheap lemonade for my first drink, Then I got a glass of Warm Prosecco (which I was advised by the staff that the party guests were drinking far to quick so can’t chill quick enough)🥴 Then I received a flat dreg from a different kind of Prosecco bottle which I had to send back. Then I noticed each round of the same drinks I was being charged different prices. When questioned I was told I should be lucky that I have been undercharged the previous time🥴 Good job this place is at the bottom end of the town so it was a 1 off visit, I’ll not have to visit again.

Service not well organised, coffee is tasteless. Overpriced for its coffee quality.
