The greedy Chef in Basildon

Dreadful cheese ploughman’s completely tasteless, items dumped on the plate, missing coleslaw and an egg that seemed to have been hard boiled for a week. Breakfast wrap looked like it had been dropped and quickly redone. Never again!

This cafe use to be very good, but today we found it has really become poor. Sausages we found very cheap plus we ordered 2 poached eggs and only one came out we then had to wait while the plate was taken away to have the other egg put onto the breakfast, the breakfast was now cold 🥶. The bubble was very waterery and had no flavour the fried egg was over cooked so no runny yolk. The lady serving in the blue hair net had the customer service of 0% maybe get the old chef back and sort out your customer service

Long wait, second time been here now, you seem to have to make a day of it just to go cafe, the food took 1h16m to come out the first time, but thought try again maybe they were very busy but again a very long wait. Not worth the wait unless you have nothing else to do. Foods not great very greasy but the sausages are nice. They seem to prioritise deliveries over seat in customers.

We have just ordered a family breakfast from here to he delivered, the omelette from here were awful and like they were deep fried. We chucked them away and didn't bother. Wouldn't recommend to anyone. Too much grease. When we rang and said, the lady on the phone was rather rude.

My first time visiting and this was the best breakfast I’ve had in a long time, breakfast 2, cooked to perfection with a really nice cup of tea and a side of toast. Will be making this my new regular!

Came here late morning Sunday 8th May 22, waited over an hour for a breakfast to be served, No apology/ explanation or offer of a cup of tea on the house to make up for the delay. Whilst waiting we had the interesting experience of listening to various members of staff arguing with customers and generally being abusive. Obviously lacking any customer service skills, food very average & tables and menus need a good clean. If staff spent more time helping out in the kitchen rather than popping out for a fag customers may get their orders when expected. Would definitely not recommend at all.

Went in here on a Sunday for a quick breakfast. One hour later still waiting- no apology. Lots of people complaining and staff were just totally abusive to customers. Poached egg finally came and cooked solid. Cook came out with the food and made no effort to apologise. Do not come here unless you want a very long wait, not that great food and rude staff.

The place was almost empty but there was a half hour wait for food . I should have realised things were bad when three customers took back there Sunday roasts because they were “dreadful “ . They received a refund . The food we got was badly cooked and the burgers were greasy and partly raw very indifferent staff I would avoid in the future

Went for breakfast, really nice, sausages to die for. Could have been hotter. Inside has been refurbished but old fashioned vinyl table cloths which were dirty (take them off and put place mats) will definitely visit again, just a few issues but overall really nice

Came here as searched for cafe’s in the area & this was close to my way home, arrived 8.15am, first impression was it was very clean, which post pandemic is a rarity. Served quickly at the counter & breakfast came within 10 minutes, all in all a decent quality breakfast, nice thick toast & cooked well, minor gripe was beans could have been hotter & bubble was mainly mash & only lightly fried (prefer more green veg mixed & fried more for colour & texture) but that’s what I’m used to so personal preference. Will definitely come again next week when in the area but go for hash browns instead of the bubble. Would definitely recommend for a good quality decent priced breakfast & most importantly spotlessly clean cafe.

We were visiting the area and was recommended the cafe by a local. Just needed lunch. I ordered an egg mayo sandwich, my husband ordered a cheese and pickle, plus two coffees. My sandwich was delicious, freshly cooked egg and mayo on lovely fresh bread. Same for my husbands sandwich, plus a real cup of coffee, (not the stuff you get in the coffee shops) 👍

For the price you pay it is not worth the money. I ordered the breakfast wrap with a colleague of mine and we was both very disappointed to say the least and it was a bad start to the day. The wrap itself was cheap and the scrambled egg was grey with no flavour, the sausage was as dry as the sahara desert, the bacon was non existent, only 1 hashbrown and the thing that made the wrap edible was the flavour from the cheese. As for the milkshake I do not even want to go there. A long story short, it is just a cheap nesquick powder with milk. Overall I would not purchase from this place again.

A decent muncherie, only had cakes and coffee/tea but yeah, good cakes (coconut and jam is great!). Two cakes, two coffees for a fiver! Can't beat that plus bought some plants that were good too in the garden centre. Happy with that!

Ordered through JustEat app. Chicken came raw after waiting a while. Cled and they said go through app to sort. No apology. Very dissapointing. Needless to say nobody in our business will order from here again sadly.

The cafe was not too busy in a Saturday morning between Christmas and New Year for six of us. Once we had negotiated the breakfast menu - number 1,2 or 3 with various additional options available we ordered at the counter. Very reasonable pricing with tea and coffee included. The food was of a very good standard. Good quality sausages and bacon and the bread/toast was nice and thick, not supermarket sliced. All in all a hearty breakfast and just the job on a cold winter’s morning.

The venue was freezing, I was wearing the jacket I plan to wear on my trip next week in a Iceland and had to sip it up to the top to stay even slightly warm.The server at the counter was surly and very shouty in the kitchen area, I really didn’t, at the other end of the venue, need to hear her conversation.The food was ok, egg slightly over cooked and the sausage wasn’t that nice. Came purely off the trip advisor review, and wasn't disappointed. my girlfriend and I went for a traditional fry-up, and fount the quality to be excellent. Bacon an sausage where of a really good standard, which is my main judging point. Prompt friendly service, with a large variety of other meals inc. Stake, Pies, Roast Dinner, also with a variety of cakes and deserts.

Off the main drag but well worth the visit. Lovely freshly cooked food, cooked to order exactly how you want it. Not posh but very clean & friendly with plenty of car parking.

Steve and I have been to this cafe before for a light lunch and were impressed by the service and food provided by a small cafe. So we decided to treat our family to a traditional Christmas dinner. The table was booked for 5 Christmas meals and 1 vegetarian. We were greeted by the friendly staff who made sure that our visit to the cafe was enjoyable. The Christmas meal was very tasty, good portions and cooked to a high standard. For dessert you could have either Christmas pudding with custard/ice cream or Black forest gateau. Tea and soft drinks were available as the cafe does not have a license.

Visited for first time and food was brilliant, fresh and great value. Place was clean and staff lovely. Will defo be visiting again 👍🏼👍🏼

My husband and I took our daughter to this cafe for a spur of the moment lunch. It was cheap food, high price and run of the mill. Wouldn’t return, not cooked fresh, everything we had was precooked and kept warm.

Can’t praise this enough. Really good, friendly, professional Staff. Had Liver, Bacon, mixed Vegetables, Mash with Onion Gravy. Words cannot explain how good it was. Also, very reasonable price. Large portions.

Big portions and great value for money. Staff were as always very friendly and accommodating. They offered table service for my big group of friends to order our food and beverages. Bus route down Pound Lane is poor at one bus per hour but from the top of Pound Lane coming off the 22 or 28 bus, it will only take 10-12 minutes to walk down Pound Lane to the Café. I thoroughly enjoyed my birthday luncheon and the managers even gave me my entire order for just me on the house. We found this place by accident when hunting around for a Garden Centre on Sunday. We are glad that we did! The food and service were excellent, large portions and very friendly staff. Definitely returning for more of the same!

This is a great local cafe serving home cooked hot food to order. Comprehensive breakfast and lunch menue. I love tinned tomatoes with mushrooms and black coffee, my friend prefers the smaller breakfast which always looks delicious. We swap some of my mushrooms for a bit of sausage.

A nice little cafe with everything from breakfast to main meals and the desserts are nice too. 😋 Friendly staff.

In winter do make sure you have good warm clothing on but it is well worth the extra layers, that way you can also hide the extra pounds because you'll want to finish your whole plate! It's cafe food just what you want from a cafe no bells or whisles just clean food.

Was down in Basildon with my family and came across this cafe, so stopped of for a quick lunch, but couldn't help myself and had a breakfast, the breakfast was lovely the sausages and bacon were so good can always tell a food breakfast from the sausage and bacon and very good staff will be back when we next visit that way!!

I saw the reviews for this cafe on Tripadvisor and decided to give it a go, we went on saturday morning and both had a breakfast, it well good quality produce well cooked and excellent value for money. The staff were happy and friendly and have created a really nice atmosphere. Will definately go again.

This is the best Cafe I have ever been to. The staff are lovely and helpful and the big breakfast is a real feast and will keep you going all day.

Delicious sausage and mushroom sandwich and my friend had rib of beef with mash and peas very enjoyable and great price.

I really like this place. Warm people who make fresh breakfast on order. Traditional looking decor. Quite spacious. Decent parking space. They accept card payment (contactless as well) for more than £5 orders. Suitable for familes with children. Very affordable prices. I will come here again when I visit Basildon.

I found this Cafe on tripadvisor and it was only just down the road from me.It has loads of free parking just outside, lots of room inside.we ordered a variety of breakfasts and changed/added items no problem.the food came up in good time and all of it was cooked perfect, the eggs where lovely and the sausages are good quality too. Il be back.

The wife and myself have eaten at a lot of cafes in the Basildon area The greedy Chef has got good reviews on tripadvisor so we thought we would give it a go.The cafe is very spacious and well laid out and spotlessly cleanA good start, the menu is very comprehensive lots of choice I had the "big breakfast " and the wife had number "3" breakfast It took about 10 minutes to arrive and was well worth the wait Well presented not a sign of oil/grease anywhere eggs were nice and dippy and the sausages had a really nice flavour.A really nice breakfast reasonably priced Will make this our cafe of choice whenever we fancy a breakfast

This is one of those little places that you could easily miss. However, it is worth seeking out. The food is superb, the premises clean and the staff helpful and friendly. Good cheap grub... what more could you ask for?

came here for bite to eat on a friday about 12-30. cafe is clean and very airey. staff friendly. We ordered large breakfast that had bacon eggs, sausages hash browns, beans and it came with a drink and toast. freshly cooked and tasted great. The prices are very good for all the dishes and a good choice on the menu.

We came here a couple of months ago and were so impressed by the food and the service we decided to return. It remains the best place I have found in the local area for breakfast. This is proper home-cooked food and the rest of the menu looks really good too.

Was asked to meet a family member Jean and her partner here. Never heard of the place before but I have to say that I was pleasantly suprised! My Smoked Haddock with poached eggs was cooked to perfection. I really enjoyed it. A really friendly place with a good menu that is fairly priced.

I took my hubby and little one here after reading reviews and lived up to my expectations. A large menu of Home cooked hearty meals. Liver & bacon was beautiful, hubby had a fry up which was cooked well no grease & well presented, children's meal great to see a veg offered. friendly staff and well worth the money. A proper meal for less than the cost of a takeaway, will definitely be going back.

Been to a few cafes around basildon, and the greedy chef ticks all the boxes. Served with a smile and the food, well if i could fit more in my belly i would. Very yummy food and lovely atmosphere. RECOMMENDED CAFE!!!!

What a great little cafe! Cute pine tables, comfortable seating, not crammed on top of everyone else, clean, happy atmosphere.... and the breakfast! Wow ! Hot, delicious, very filling, and so unbelievably cheap ! Service with a smile, and plenty of change in our pocket- fabulous !!!!

Have been meaning to visit this cafe for some time and now wish I had sooner! Extensive menu at very reasonable prices and the food is of a decent quality too. All in all a recommend greasy spoon and will definitely be visiting more often.

Went back to this quirky little place on one of the coldest days only to find a cafe with heating on, full Xmas decorations, excellent Xmas dinner and still defiantly the best atmosphere. I love this place.

I was in the Garden Centre just looking around, anyway the smell of café food came across in the breeze.I'm so glad it did, I only went in for a cup of tea, but had a cheese omelette. My god was this the best omelette I've ever tasted. Light fluffy and full of cheese.Since then I have been back to several times and always pleased.Recommended.

I found this gem of a café by chance, nothing is too much trouble, no matter what you want the staff are actually pleased to help. The food is the best around. The atmosphere of this café is such a surprise because the staff are HAPPY. Totally recommend to anyone who want to treat themselves. The food is also freshly cook as you order it non of that rubber egg thing going on. Worth the time to write a review.
