Just passing through and stopped off the The Greater Good in Fovant for a bite to eat. Now I normally like a good moan, but for once I’m unable to find fault. Food quality and service at the Greater Good was exceptional. It’s worth the small detour I was in or in fact a visit in its own right.

Alex & Fritha and their Team have only been at The Greater Good since June 2022, and what a breath of fresh air! The Pub is open and buzzing and Alex' chefing is superb. The food was excellent, the same as the Service - friendly and fun a lot like the atmosphere in the pub.

We stopped here on Sat 20th Aug for some food on the of chance after visiting a nearby attraction. Although food wasn’t being served until later, we arrived between service early afternoon, Alex was happy to prepare and cook for us regardless. Our dog was made very welcome even though he knocked his bowl of water over which was provided by Alex. He explained that all food was made by himself using locally sourced produce and was very detailed about how he makes everything from scratch. I had the burger and my wife the steak both were fantastic. For desert, again all made by Alex from scratch, my wife had an orange, strawberry and chocolate cheesecake and I a sticky toffee pudding. Well these were amazing in flavour and very well presented. We learned that Alex had only taken over and been open 8 weeks or so and we’re struck by how friendly and accommodating he was by providing food when he wasn’t really serving food until 6pm. The service and food was absolutely first class, the price was excellent and the atmosphere, decor and friendless was top notch. I think Alex will get very busy as people start finding out how good this place is and will go from strength to strength. We will return in the future, thank you and good luck.

Booked only a day before travelling due to being let down by a different B&B. The pub was very attractive and well decorated and the Landlords were incredibly kind and could not be more accommodating. We stayed in 'the flat' which was very clean, well set out, bed was good (only one pillow per person - due to Covid) and the shower room was very clean and finished to a good standard. Landlord left a superb continental breakfast for us. We did not eat there as we had booked nearby but had a drink in the bar and the ale was just superb. Overall we felt that we could not have asked for more and the room was really good value for money and the owners were really genuine and did all they could to make our stay comfortable. We will be back.

Friend, who aren't local, booked this for dinner. We checked reviews and were looking forward to trying out somewhere new and local (especially as we like to support local independent restaurants). Two of us ordered the Vegetable Wellington which was Stilton and cranberry with sautéed potato's. What actually arrived was Stilton and courgettes and red pepper (not a cranberry in sight) served with a ratatouille (with new potatoes added). We were surprised at the lack of saute potatoes but decided to give it a go.We raised the issues with the waitress the change and that what we'd be served was not what was advertised. She shared that this is what they were serving! She politely asked if we'd like anything else and we requested saute potatoes. To cut a long story short.. The manager came over and apologised and said she was disappointed that we didn't enjoy our meal and that every one else had! She also offered to take these two meals of the bill. We didn't feel the apology was very gracious and then when the bill arrived only 1 meal had been removed.Sadly, both the meal advertised and the manager (owner!) attitude has sorely let this establishment down.Very dissspoiinted as all the other reviews were so good. Maybe they were all having a bad night... Who knows, but our experience was not one to rave about (sadly) and their hospitality and attitude didn't create a pleasant environment for us either!

Dinner for two tonight at this fab Inn. Welcoming staff who asked if we’d like a cosy corner table by the fire rather than the restaurant area, which we did. Food was delicious and the atmosphere was warm and relaxed. My husband plumped for ‘fish n chips’ which was very tasty. His only slight criticism was that he would’ve preferred the fish to have not been placed on top of the tartare sauce. Other than that, it was all good. We will return!

We stopped here for lunch on the way to Devon and what a lovely welcome we got! It has just started to rain so we asked if we could bring our dog in. By the time we had got him out of the car and in the pub there was a bowl of water waiting for him. They were playing 80’s music on their cd jukebox which pleased me greatly although my husband was not to keen as he isn’t a fan of the 80’s! He did however spend a very happy few minutes picking from their vast selection of cd’s once we had eaten! We both had the pork belly which was very nice. Strummer was given a plate of dog biscuits much to his delight! On the way out we took strummer to the garden for a sniff about and what a gem of a garden it was. Such a shame it wasn’t nice enough weather for us to sit in it and enjoy it!

My goats cheese pasta dish was yummy, large portion so I took the remains away. Having reserved a table for lunch we were running a little late on the day and phoned to let them know. We arrived to find the pub empty no tables laid for lunch. We were not shown to a table and therefore requested drinks at the bar. Asking for a spritzer we were offered three white wines and having decided on the French were then told they didn’t have any so I chose the New Zealand. We then asked where they would like us to sit and were told anywhere. Being then given the menus we were told that they had no chef and therefore a number of dishes were unavailable. We had. Macaroni cheese which was average with a very small salad. We then asked for the dessert menu and were told there were no deserts available. I’m not sure it would have taken a chef to produce ice cream but none was offered. We then asked for coffee. I asked for a macchiato and was not sure the waitress understood what I meant so explained exactly what it was. I was served with and ordinary cup of coffe which again was mediocre. The whole thing was extremely disappointing. We were celebrating a birthday and had been recommended. I think we should have been told when we phoned to confirm our arrival that there was no chef and it was difficult to produce food. We would have gone somewhere else and probably tried them on another occasion. Having read the reviews we wondered if we were in the right place.

Freya runs it with tireless enthusiam (I think on behalf of her parents) and is supported by the most friendly and welcoming Jessica and Beckya. Real ales are new names to me but good and inexpensive. Inventive starters, great F&C; and properly cooked steaks. Lots of spacious rooms adorned with classic dining furniture on wooden floors make it look somewhat formal but the staff soon dissipate this impression. There are a dozen or so tables outside, three on a terrace and the rest on a multi-tiered garden, suitable for younger legs than mine. It is fun to go there.

Pleased that they are now opening all day and have happy hour between 4 and 6 - £3 per pint of draught beer, lager or cider. Very friendly staff and they have a great beer garden. I’ve heard that the food is very good too!

We were visiting the area and had this place recommended by a member of bar staff in Broad Chalke. So we came with our dog (he was made to feel very welcome!)- had starters and sirloin steak and it was absolutely lovely and reasonably priced. The staff couldn’t make you feel more welcome. Would definitely visit again.

Well what can I say, you will find this restored public house on the A30 between Fovant and Compton Chamberlayne just outside of Salisbury.
